If you’re still contemplating whether to pay a visit to the iconic Bukit Timah Railway Station, a meal at 1932 Story Cafe should be good enough reason to start planning your visit. 

For the uninitiated, 1932 Story Cafe is a 1930s-themed cafe which has found its home in what used to be the Railway Staff Quarters at the Bukit Timah Railway Station. Apart from dishing up some pretty decent cafe fare, diners would also get to enjoy the nostalgic decorations and train memorabilia around the cafe. Best of all, 1932 Story Cafe does not charge GST.

Being the only dining option at the Bukit Timah Railway Station, 1932 Story Cafe can experience reasonably heavy foot traffic during weekends especially when the weather is good. Thankfully for us, we visited 1932 Story Cafe on a drizzly Saturday morning so the cafe was only about 50% occupied.

1932 Story Cafe offers diners the option to dine indoors or outdoors. Those who dine outdoors will get to enjoy the greenery (and a healthy does of Vitamin D), and those who dine indoors will get to enjoy the cafe’s tasteful nostalgic decor.

When you first step into 1932 Story Cafe, you will feel as if you’ve stepped into someone’s personal museum. The selection and placement of all decoration pieces felt intentional, and we especially loved the feature of the old-school ticket station in the center of the cafe — such a statement piece.

To pass the time when waiting for your meal, you can wander to the rear of 1932 Story Cafe to have a tour of their heritage gallery. Here, you’d find plenty of train memorabilia including an old railway telephone and tickets from the former KTM railway.

Apart from the usual coffee and tea offerings, 1932 Story Cafe carries a range of specialty drinks for the adventurous such as the Charred Smoke Latte (S$6) and Rose Latte (S$6). But for those visiting with young children, you can order as per what we did — a Piccolo (S$4.50) for dad, Matcha Latte (S$5.50) for mom and a Babycino (S$2.50) for the toddler.

What is brunch without some poached eggs? We ordered 1932 Story Cafe’s rendition of the eggs benedict — the Eggs Benedict & Honey Chicken Ham with Sourdough Bread (S$15.90).

On balance, we thought that 1932 Story Cafe did a pretty good job with the dish. The sourdough bread was lightly toasted and the poached eggs had an adequately runny yolk. That said, we thought that the Hollandaise sauce was slightly underwhelming and would have preferred for the sauce to have a slightly stronger egg flavour. 

If you’re keen to sample their local delights, we would definitely recommend ordering the Sesame Ball with Ground Peanut Filling (S$3.90 for 3 pieces). The sesame balls were freshly fried and the peanut filling was rather tasty.

Waffles are one of the best things to enjoy at a cafe. At 1932 Story Cafe, you can enjoy the Belgian Waffle (S$6) which comprises 2 pieces of waffles drizzled with honey and icing sugar. Whilst there wasn’t anything outstanding about the waffles, the waffles were crispy, light and fluffy.

For those who live in Clementi, Balmoral Bakery is an old-school bakery that would be no stranger to you. With roots dating back to the mid-1960s, Balmoral Bakery is well-loved for their baked pastries and fluffy cakes.

If you’re not sure where Balmoral Bakery is, all you’ll need to do is use your sense of smell to guide you. We kid you not — that’s how amazing their bakes smell even from a distance away. Here’s what you can expect at this traditional bakery.

Balmoral Bakery is located at the edge of the rows of shops at Sunset Way Residence. However, what makes this humble bakery stand out is its brick walls and tiled flooring. Given that the logo of Balmoral Bakery bears resemblance to the Balmoral Castle in Scotland, the choice of red brick walls for the bakery’s was definitely an appropriate choice.

Although Balmoral Bakery doesn’t occupy a very large store space, customers would be impressed by the range of baked goods that they carry within the store. We were drawn in by the rows of freshly baked pastries which made a feast for the eyes.

The pastries at Balmoral Bakery are priced affordably and most are below S$2 each. Our picks were the Chicken Pie (S$1.80), Char Siew Soh (S$1.60) and the Beef Pie (S$2.50). Other options that you can choose include the Chicken Curry Puff (S$1.60), Beef Curry Puff (S$1.60) and Sausage Roll (S$1.60).

Our thoughts? We were big fans of the Chicken Pie and Beef Pie. Each pastry was filled with large chunks of meat, and the flavours were rich and slightly peppery. Best of all? The pastry crust was crispy and flaky even after keeping the pies in the fridge and reheating them the next day. That means you can order more pies and freeze them for future consumption.

As for the Char Siew Soh, whilst the pastry had a pleasing appearance, we weren’t impressed by its flavour. So if you’re visiting Balmoral Bakery for the first time, we’d recommend giving this a miss.

The Bacon & Onion Quiche (S$2.50) was a pretty decent option. The quiche was filled with a generous portion of bacon and white onions, and the saltiness of the bacon was a beautiful contrast to the sweetness of the white onions. The egg custard of the Bacon & Onion Quiche was also pretty tasty and the layer of melted cheese atop the pastry brought all the flavours together.

It would be a crime to leave a traditional bakery without ordering some of their traditional western cakes. We selected Coconut, Vanilla, Kaya Pandan, Chocolate and Coffee Chocolate, all of which were priced at S$1.80 per slice. The buttercream of each slice of cake was light and not overly sweet, and the texture of the cakes was soft and sufficiently fluffy.

Good news for fans of old-school fast food restaurant, Waffletown! It is making a comeback and it will be reopening at NEWest in West Coast.

Waffletown is currently soft-launching with a limited menu and it will officially open on 31 May 2022.

For those of you who haven’t been to Waffletown, it is a family-owned retro fast-food restaurant that has been serving American food such as burgers, fried chicken and Belgian waffles for the past forty years in Singapore.

Waffletown closed down on 18 May 2021 due to rental problems and its former premise at Balmoral Plaza was taken over by FairPrice Finest.

Other than its popular waffles, Waffletown also offers burgers, fried chicken, fries and ice cream.

Do note that some of your favourite menu items may not be available yet as Waffletown is currently only serving a limited menu.

One of Foreword Coffee Roasters’s signature drinks is the Timeless Yuan Yang (S$6.50). A ristretto shot of their Yunnan Ouyang coffee blend with an Earl Grey tea ice ball blends perfectly with milk.

The first sip brought out the bright flavour of the Earl Grey instantly and as it faded on your tastebuds, the fruity yet bitter note of the Yunnan Ouyang Coffee could be tasted. It was an excellent modern rendition of the traditional Yuan Yang.

Foreword Coffee Roasters’s next signature drink, the 70% Dark Chocolate (S$6.50), was a delight to drink. This would be perfect for those who enjoy a milkier hot chocolate drink but want that rich chocolate aroma.

Molten cookies are actually pretty novel and unique and you can find this kickass treat at Kooks Creamery. The cookies are crumbly on the outside; soft and chewy on the inside.

THE HUMBLE SCOOP

Tucked away in the basement of Katong Shopping Centre, The Humble Scoop prides themselves on locally inspired ice cream flavours. Laifabar is a noodle house that specialises in traditional wanton noodle, dumplings and roast meats. Chef-owner Royce Lee inherited the recipes by his grandmother, who used to be a hawker selling homemade taupok and wanton noodle back in the 1970s.

Known for its “Bu Jian Tian” Fatty char siew and wanton noodle, Laifabar first started and made a name for itself as a wine bar turned noodle house at Scarlet hotel in Ann Siang Hill. Then it moved to Lucky Plaza B1 Lucky Food Centre in December 2020 for a brief period before shifting to the current location at an industrial building in Bukit Batok in April 2021.

With the move to a bigger space, Laifabar has expanded their menu to include rice options to pair with their roast meats.

On Laifabar’s menu, there are four types of roast meat—char siew, roast pork, roast duck and Soya Sauce Chicken.

There is a top-up of S$2 to upgrade the Char Siew to their signature Bu Jian Tian Char Siew for mains.

Out of the three roast meats that we’ve had, the signature Bu Jian Tian Fatty Char Siew was the clear winner. It had the right proportion of fats to meat ratio and it was truly outstanding.

The difference between the Bu Jian Tian Fatty Char Siew and the leaner Char Siew is the texture of the meat. Bu Jian Tian Char Siew is fattier and a lot more tender than the normal Char Siew. Unless you are not a fan of fatty Char Siew, we definitely recommend upgrading it from the normal Char Siew to the Bu Jian Tian Char Siew.

The Roast Duck was also excellent and we enjoyed it thoroughly.

We didn’t quite like the Roast Pork as it was too fatty (not in a good way) and not as crispy we would like it to be.

Laifabar’s new outlet at Prestige Centre in Bukit Batok isn’t the most accessible location, but their excellent roast meats are worth travelling for. Otherwise, they offer islandwide delivery on Grab and you can still get their roast meats without going all the way to the west of Singapore.

Situated just a stone’s throw away from the esteemed Swee Choon Dim Sum is Johore Ye Zhi Mei Handmade Bao, which serves a wide array of tasty and affordably priced dim sum, 24 hours a day from Tuesdays to Sundays.

Besides their signature giant handmade bao, Ye Zhi Mei, that they are best known for, they also offer interesting spins on dim sum such as Bean Curd Dumpling, Salted Egg Siew Mai and Century Egg Siew Mai.

Lai Kee has 5 outlets in Singapore, and they are all traditional, old-school dim sum stalls located in nondescript coffee shops. They offer endless dim sum options, including your typical Siew Mai and Har Gow.

Though portions are relatively small, most items are affordably priced, so rest assured that you can feast on dim sum without burning a hole in your wallet at Lai Kee.

SHI WEI XIAN HONG KONG DIM SUM

Shi Wei Xian Hong Kong Dim Sum is a place where east-siders flock to for unpretentious and delectable dim sum. Their traditional handmade dim sum is priced at an average of just S$3, and this includes the classics such as the humble char siew bao, chee cheong fun and siew mai.

Oddly, they are only open on weekends and they usually sell out pretty early so be sure to head over earlier to beat the crowd!

If you ask a resident of Kovan where you should head to for excellent dim sum without burning a hole in your pocket, Yi Dian Xin Hong Kong Dim Sum is the place to go. You are very likely to find a basket of their signature Liu Sha Bao on every table because no one leaves without a taste of that buttery salted egg yolk goodness.

If you are looking for more items to share, the humble stall also has other classic dim sum dishes such as har gao, xiao long bao, char siew rice roll and siew mai.

TIONG BAHRU PAU

Offering value-for-money dim sum across a few outlets in Singapore, Tiong Bahru Pau is where you can get Cantonese-style buns and other dim sum items that range from S$0.80 to S$2 per piece.

This Dim Sum treasure place is located in the heart of the Jalan Besar neighbourhood. The unique dim sum served here is one of the reasons why customers keep coming back for more!

True to its name, every single dish here is priced at the unbelievable cost of S$1.30.

One of the cheapest dim sum places in Singapore, Kuai San Dian Xin is popular for their Custard Pau and Carrot Cake. The Custard Pau has a rich buttery filling and your teeth will literally sink into the soft skin of the pau. However, do not expect the custard to flow out of the bun like regular custard paus in the market, the filling is more solid than liquid.

However, the prices are consistent with the portion of the dishes and one can definitely eat up to seven or eight dishes alone! But considering that it will add up to only about S$10, it is still a great deal!

Known for serving affordable and authentic Korean dishes, Ajumma’s Korean Restaurant has closed down its original outlet at The Cathay recently and it has officially opened its new location at Bukit Panjang Plaza on 21 Dec 2021.

Ajumma’s is a casual Korean eatery where you can get Korea homestyle cooking minus the frills (and service charge).

Most of the dishes on Ajumma’s menu are affordably priced under S$10 and they include options such as Chicken Bulgogi, Bibimbap, Spicy Ramyeon, and House-Smoked Mackerel.

The Beef Bulgogi (S$10.50) set comes with plump white rice and an assortment of small side dishes. The marinated grilled beef was juicy and savoury, best eaten with rice to balance the saltiness.

The Kimchi Ramyeon (S$8.90+) has a generous portion of noodles, meat, tofu and vegetables.

Fast food restaurant A&W is opening its first outlet in the west of Singapore at Jurong Point in end Jan 2021.

Hot on the heels of receiving the halal certification and the opening of its outlet at Canberra Plaza, A&W will be opening its fourth outlet in Singapore.

Poulét Singapore French Roast Chicken is now officially Halal-Certified. Known for its Roast Chicken which comes in three different sauces (Diane sauce, mushroom cream sauce and cranberry sauce), Poulét is a casual dining restaurant that offers relatively decent French dishes at reasonable prices.

All Poulét outlets other than the location at Kallang Wave Mall have received their halal certification.

Out of the three sauces, we love their signature Roast Chicken with mushroom cream the most. And if it’s your first time dining at Poulét, you have to add on the side of Mash Potato.

While you may be there primarily because of their excellent roast chicken, it would be a pity to pass up on the Tiramisu, which is served in a jar. It is certainly one of the better tiramisus you can find in Singapore.

Yuba Hut is opening a new outlet in the west of Singapore. Known for its Aburi sushi rolls and Japanese rice bowls, Yuba Hut’s newest outlet will be opening at Rail Mall on 23 Oct 2020.

Established in 2014, Pantler started its original store at Telok Ayer and it is one awesome patisserie that will chase all your Monday Blues away with their gourmet creations. We especially loved their Yuzu Meringue Tart. While the yuzu creamy custard can come across overtly sour on its own, the sweetness of the meringue helped to counteract its tartness, which resulted in an all-round refreshing after-taste.

If you’re a book nerd or someone who enjoys the peace and quiet of libraries, you must have been devasted to know that libraries were not accessible to the public for quite some time. Libraries in Singapore are finally reopening in Phase 2 so we can head there for some alone time and a good book.

SOAK UP THE SUN AT THE BEACH 

It’s time to get a good dosage of vitamin D to make up for all the time you spent stuck at home. Head over to one of Singapore’s many beaches to frolic in the sand & sea, get a good tan and just laze around. Who knew that we would one day miss the sun so much!

Some beaches you can visit in Singapore’s Phase 2 include Palawan Beach, Siloso Beach and East Coast Park. You can also have a mini getaway and go island hopping at some of the few islands that surround Singapore.

WORK YOUR LEGS AND DO A WALKING TRAIL 

Stretch those stiff legs and take a nice long walk at one of Singapore’s many walking trails such as Imbiah Trails, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Southern Ridges. It’s a wholesome activity to do in Phase 2 with your partner and friends after being apart for so long!

HAVE A PICNIC AT THE PARK 

Everyone is all excited about dining out in Singapore and we can expect some pretty long queues for our favourite eateries. To skip the crowds, why not have a picnic at a park instead? Places like The Botanic Gardens, MacRitchie Reservoir and Chinese Garden are open again in Phase 2 in Singapore so you can prepare a sumptuous feast with your loved ones for a fun picnic session.

If you don’t fancy the usual attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore and Singapore Zoo, an alternative activity you can try out is mural hopping. Their methodology at Omotesando Koffee lies in two things: their signature cube-framed bar which houses their baristas as well as their precise approach to brewing coffee. 2020 has been a bad year for everyone, period. 

Most industries in Singapore have been badly hit by the pandemic, which has left many of us scrambling to save our sinking boats. The F&B sector especially has suffered and things got worse when the Circuit Breaker was put in place, restricting people from dining out and patronising these establishments.

Aside from COVID-19, many of these F&B ventures have also decided to close for other reasons such as the end of their lease. Whatever the case, we are sad to see these places go and we hope that better opportunities will come their way soon.
