Yishun – the place where most Singaporeans poke fun at for their mysterious yet somewhat hilarious happenings. However, what some don’t know is that it’s a pretty poppin’ place filled with all sorts of hidden foodie gems! Just think cheap laksa, army stew and crispy har cheong gai!

928 YISHUN LAKSA


A favourite of Singaporeans, regardless of whether they are Yishun residents, is 928 Yishun Laksa. Despite not having an actual name, many flock to this stall for their S$2.80 laksa bowls.

Silky noodles in a fragrant broth are topped off with beansprouts, egg, taupok and fishcakes. Their “hum” is optional, so let them know whether you’d like some in your laksa!

A plate of this chicken rice will have you coming back to Yishun just for their tender and succulent slices of chicken. Drenched in a savoury soy sauce and sesame oil dressing, this is one of the better chicken rice stalls in Singapore.

A plate of their S$6 chicken will be enough to share with a friend. You can order some rice and soup to go along with it! If you haven’t tried this hidden gem, time to put it on your to-eat lists!

If you’re looking to have something on the healthier side, Ah Lock’s Hakka Tofu Bowl (S$5.50) will be a great option if you’re in the Yishun area. Located in Yishun Park Hawker Centre, this bowl comes with a generous helping of veggies, tofu meatballs and tofu chunks. It’s also topped with an addictive creamy mayo sauce.

AH TAN WINGS


This stall needs no introduction. Ah Tan Wings, also located in Yishun Park Hawker Centre, serves up plates of crispy yet juicy Shrimp Paste Wings (S$5.20). A plate of this comes with rice, cucumber slices, a perfectly-fried egg and 3 golden brown Har Cheong Gai. To some, it’s truly the best Har Cheong Gai in Singapore, and we now know why they’ve said that.

The chicken is fried to perfection, yet it’s not greasy. It has a superb prawn paste flavour that goes very well with the rice and egg.

CHONG PANG NASI LEMAK


Being a little out of the way has not stopped crowds from flocking to Chong Pang Nasi Lemak. Their affordable yet extremely delicious side dishes have rightfully earned their claim to fame – especially for those fancying a late-night supper!

Our favourites have to be their fried hashbrowns, sambal sotong and their fried chicken wings!

The halal-version of the hit burger joint Fat Boys can be found in Yishun! Fat Papa’s still offers up their signature burgers such as The Elvis and their Bleu Peppercorn burgers but include delicious mains such as the Chicken Mac & Cheese and Salted Egg Crab Pasta!

This one’s for our Muslim friends who love a great juicy burger and some indulgent Western food!

Nestled amongst HDB flats in Yishun, Heng Hua Restaurant is a hidden gem which serves authentic Heng Hwa delights and a wide variety of zhi char dishes at pocket-friendly prices. You can expect to find mouth-watering Chinese food that is perfect for your family.

The one dish that you must order is the Heng Hua-Style Fried Bee Hoon (S$4.50). Not only did the vermicelli had hints of the seafood flavour from the clams, but the crunchy peanuts and seaweed also made the dish even more addictive.

LIT LIT XIN POPIAH & ICE KACHANG


Tucked away near Yishun MRT is Lit Lit Xin Popiah. For just S$1.50, you get a roll of delectable popiah! The skin of the popiah is paper-thin yet held the delicious fillings inside without any seeping of sauce. A kick from the chilli was also a welcome sensation!

We also enjoyed a bowl of Ice Kachang, sold at the same store, for S$1.70! It’s truly hard to find such affordable gems in Singapore nowadays.

Try their S$6.90 Dry Truffle Ramen for a strong kick of truffle with tender pulled pork! It’s super fragrant yet still doesn’t break the bank.
