While we admit that burgers aren’t exactly the healthiest food choices around, nothing beats sinking your teeth into a succulent, tender burger oozing with melted cheese and stretching your mouth to the fullest in attempt to taste every single element in a mouthful.

You can never go wrong with their popular Avocado Shake (S$7.50). What makes this drink so special is the gula melaka added to the blended avocado.
The Wired Monkey is a new speciality coffee shop nestled just off Little India along Dunlop Street. Besides serving up amazing coffee, they also have some interesting food offerings that delve away from your typical cafe fare.

Their Falafel Burger comes highly recommended and their banana cake is the perfect accompaniment for your freshly brewed coffee. The Wired Monkey uses a blend of coffee from Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee, a veteran in Singapore’s coffee scene.

If you’re tired, The Wired Monkey is, without a doubt, an excellent place to get wired.

If you happen to be a fan of Middle Eastern cuisine, then the Falafel Burger (S$12) should be right up your alley.

This unconventional cafe item consists of a deep-fried patty made primarily from chickpeas and is stacked with kale, a refreshing tomato compote and tzatziki (a common Greek sauce made with yoghurt, cucumber, garlic and sometimes mint). The dish comes served with thick, crispy wedges of sweet potato fries.

No surprises here—Fresh Fruits Lab (FFL) is our favourite cafe in the East of Singapore. This has never changed since our first visit in 2015.

The themed cafe has seen a revamp recently and it is nothing short of amazing. Still keeping their core laboratory theme and incorporating fruits into their menu, FFL now boasts a colourful, pastel interior that is both whimsical and photogenic.

It has also become a kids-friendly dining outlet with a play corner for your little ones as well as a low-salt kids menu that is so reasonably priced.

How can a cafe make us fall in love so much? FFL always does it best. Here are some of our favourite dishes from its current menu. You need to bring your squad here for your next gathering!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

So you think the cafe only looks pretty?

FFL has always been consistent with their food. No effort is spared to serving only the best—from their dedicated culinary team (most of the chefs have years of experience cooking and baking in top hotels in Singapore!) to the freshness of ingredients.

The menu goes beyond a typical cafe’s standards. It has a wide range of appetisers, salads, mains, desserts, coffee and juices; basically everything that attributes to a good meal. And as its name and theme suggest, FFL incorporates fruits as much as possible into everything for that healthy and refreshing touch.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

FFL SIGNATURE FISH & CHIPS

If we had to pick only one dish to love at FFL, it would be their Signature Fish & Chips. Fish & Chips may sound boring but wait till you’ve tried FFL’s version!

For just S$19, you get a huge piece of beer-battered pacific dory fried to a golden perfection. As if the generous serving is not filling enough, it comes with a larger portion of fruits salad, a mountain of fries and homemade tartare.

This is comfort food for the soul, guys.

SOFT-SHELL CRAB PASTA

Also at S$19, this pasta is our favourite among the four choices on the menu.

Featuring a huge and crispy soft-shell crab sits atop al dente spaghetti, the Soft-Shell Crab Pasta is a slightly spicy rendition that is not for the faint-hearted. The chilli crab sauce is homemade, by the way.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

SALMON STEAK

A healthier option for the ladies (and even the kids) is the Salmon Steak (S$26). This dish is set on fire (literally) as it is served to you and the end result is a sweet piece of pink salmon that boasts a subtle smoky flavour.

It is accompanied by asparagus purée, mashed carrots, arugula and a homemade grape sauce served in a cute onion cup! That is a fair bit of greens if your skinny jeans are getting a little tight but you still need good food in your life.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

LIGHTNING CARS

The perfect dish for your boys (or girls who love cars!), the Lightning Cars (S$12) is a simple yet hearty grilled chicken that is tender and flavourful despite the fact that no salt is used in cooking.

This chicken main is served with purple sweet potato purée and mixed fruit skewers for a more balanced meal.

CREEPY-CRAWLY

Fancy something more filling for the older kids? The Creepy-Crawly (S$13) is a wholesome tortilla wrap that is jam-packed with yummy smoked duck, onion, lettuce and carrots.

There is also a side of homemade fruit yogurt—blueberry, strawberry, granola, honey yoghurt.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins><ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins>

The brioche bun provided a nice sweetness which bolded well with the savoury qualities of the meaty beef ragu. The sausage by itself was flavourful, but the beef ragu coupled with the cheese gave the dish a heightened dose of richness and texture.

The Chicken Burger (S$16) is something of a treat that even the most discerning of palates can agree with. Sandwiched between a toasted charcoal bun is a crispy chicken thigh that is given a healthy dose of their homemade buffalo wing sauce and cheddar cheese sauce as well as a refreshing cucumber slaw.

The chicken thigh had a lovely crunch and the marriage between both the spicy buffalo wing sauce and the cheddar cheese sauce was magical, to say the least. The cucumber slaw was a nice touch as well as it gave this heavy dish a refreshing lift. Crispy, spicy and savoury, this hearty burger easily trumps all other chicken burgers out there.

One thing that all foodies can agree on is that we are constantly on a see-food diet and there is no stopping us when a feast of tantalising seafood is laid before us. The joy of getting down and dirty with crabs, mussels and prawns is so appealing and should this experience come at an affordable price tag, what is there not to love?

Located on Level 3 at the new extension of Plaza Singapura, Cajun On Wheels is a Halal-certified seafood diner serving unadulterated and fresh seafood in true American fashion. This is their second outlet—after their first food truck at Pasarbella Suntec City—and you would be delighted to know that their menu at Plaza Singapura is exclusive to that outlet too.

As its name says, Cajun On Wheels is a Cajun-themed diner and you can expect all dishes on its menu to pack a punch.

A UNIQUE DINING EXPERIENCE

As our mantra goes, why settle for less when you can have more?

An unconventional dining experience awaits at Cajun On Wheels, where you can order your food from a gourmet food truck. This translates to a fuss-free dining experience that is good for both solo diners and group gatherings.

In contrast to their first outlet at Pasarbella, Cajun On Wheels at Plaza Singapura has taken things up a notch by with the addition of succulent beef burgers and platters for sharing to its menu.

And this month, this Louisana seafood restaurant will be introducing a few new seafood dishes. Excited? Yes, you should be.

Indulging in seafood is not the same if you don’t get your hands dirty in the process of ripping out fresh and juicy meat from the seafood galore before you.

POSEIDON BUCKET

You either go big or go home. Serious seafood lovers searching for big and bold flavours should begin your meal with the Poseidon Bucket (S$115) that would be good for sharing among 2 to 3 persons.

And we are pleased to tell you that the Poseidon Bucket (S$115) lived up to its hype. Comprising Sri Lanka Crab 600g, Prawns 300g, White Clams 300g, Mussels 300g, Sweet Corn, Potatoes and Chicken Spam, this is surely one value-for-money bucket that we thoroughly enjoyed.

// ]]>

A tip from us is to pour out the Poseidon Bucket onto the table before you. Not only will it be a party in your mouth, it will be visually arresting as well. We enjoyed ours with Spicy Cheesy Soil.

Did you know that Cajun On Wheels only uses live crabs in its seafood dishes so as to retain the maximum freshness of each crab? This is how you know you are getting what you paid for.

THE NAUGHTY PLATTER

The Naughty Platter (S$33.90) is another dish that is great for sharing. But if you are hungry (or naughty) enough, we trust that you could probably have the whole thing yourself.

The Naughty Platter comes with deep-fried squid, sea bass, tiger prawns and a choice of pilaf rice or aglio olio pasta.

THE INCRAWDIBLES

Now, let us present to you Cajun On Wheels’ latest addition to their menu—The Incrawdibles (S$42 for 500g, S$79 for 1kg). When we first laid eyes on the bucket, we were impressed by the sheer portion of crawfish that was served.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The Thai flavours really came through with this. It was tangy, sweet with an intense heat that kicks you at the end. The beef patty was firm and juicy and the tangy som tum salad provided an added brightness to the dish.

Despite the spiciness leaving us gasping for ice water after, we must say that this was some of the best sliders we have ever had. Period.

When prompted about good cafes to visit in Singapore, rarely does a café outside of the East or Central Singapore come to mind; and especially not one from Sembawang.

Common Chefs Café & Bakery is an exception and it will be a good enough reason for you to make a trip down to this Northern part of Singapore.

A café plus bakery, Common Chefs Café & Bakery offers a wide spread of Western dishes, drinks, delightful desserts at affordable prices. Here’s what to expect if you are taking a trip down.

The Single Cheese Burger (S$13 for beef, S$12 for chicken and S$11 for fish) features a juicy single patty packed together with freshly sliced tomatoes, cheddar cheese, mustard, mesclun salad and ketchup in a beautifully buttered brioche bun. All burgers come with fries on the side.

We thoroughly enjoyed the beef patty which was extremely tender and bursting with flavour. For an additional S$1, we upgraded the regular fries to truffle fries. While it was decent, it was not the best truffle fries we’ve tried.

As matcha lovers, we could not help but order the Matcha Latte (S$5) which was not too sweet and the notes of the matcha really came through.

Common Chefs Café & Bakery gives you the opportunity to customise your own Dessert Waffle. We decided on the charcoal waffle (S$7.50) with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream (S$3.50 for a single scoop; S$6 for a double scoop) topped with a wonderful caramel sauce.

As the salted caramel ice cream (and caramel sauce) was surprisingly sweet, we were glad that we chose the charcoal waffle as its neutral and muted taste complemented the sweets perfectly.

Fynn’s Café—conveniently located right outside Esplanade MRT Station Exit CC3—is a gorgeous new addition to South Beach Avenue. The beautiful modern all-day dining café reminded us of our good old days in Melbourne. It is worth mentioning staff members are attentive and friendly – a trait that Singapore’s hospitality industry greatly lacks.

We dropped by on a weekday afternoon and Fynn’s Café was packed with customers; expatriates and office dwellers make up the bulk of the crowd. No surprise there, since it is located just a stone’s throw away from the office building and JW Marriott Hotel.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

If you are torn between the Korean Chicken Burger and the Hanger Steak, we say go for the burger instead.

We also recommend the Bacon & Mushroom Carbonara (S$16++). Al dente penne pasta is cooked in fragrant white wine and served with aromatic mushrooms, crispy garlic flakes, streaky bacon and a sous vide egg.

It has been a while since my last visit to Relish by Wild Rocket, so I went there for lunch during a weekend, and I am happy to report that their burgers are still very good – Relish remains one of my favourite burger joints in Singapore.

The branch at myVillage at Serangoon Garden has huge glass panels which allow light to shine thorough. It is a comfortable space and I can see myself going back more often. Most of the burgers are priced between $14 – 18, which I have to say is excellent value for the quality.

The Wild Rocket Beef Burger ($14.80) is just as good as I had remember it to be. I love burgers that are highly stacked with lots of ingredients, but sometimes, all we need is a simple and good burger. Which is why I found this burger — a medium-rare beef patty sandwiched between two toasted bun, with arugula, sarawak pepper cream and sun-dried tomato relish — perfect. This is the definition of a good and no-frills burger.

With its delicious char siew soft-bone pork topped with a secret char siew sauce on a homemade foccacia, the BBQ Char Siew Open Pork Burger ($17.50) is also one of my favourites.

Other burgers on the menu include: Blue Cheese & William Pear Beef Burger ($18.50), Chicken Satay Burger ($14.60), Bacon & Cheese Beef Burger ($16.40), and a Soft Shell Chilli Crab Burger ($15.60), which was surprisingly tasty.

If you don’t feel like having burgers, there are several main courses – such as Grilled Pork Chop ($20.90), Spicy Corned Beef Spaghettini ($15.80), Green Curry Seafood Shepherd’s Pie ($17) – on the menu.

Be sure to save room for desserts. I swear by their Strawberry Cheesecake ($9) – Wild Rocket’s signature dessert – a deconstructed cheesecake which is served in a glass. It is so good that I will not go to Relish without ordering it.

The Dark Lava Chocolate Gateau ($12.80) is also worthy of a spot in my list of best chocolate lava cake in Singapore. The pandan-infused Panna Cotta ($8) with gula melaka is also an interesting option.

Jalan Besar looks set to be the next up and coming area, with hip places such as Antoinette Patisserie, Chye Seng Huat and Broadcast HQ.

Suprette, a modern restaurant which specialises in American-inspired food with a grown-up drinks list, is one of the newest addition to the area. The restaurant can be describe as being on the intimate side, the space is only big enough to accommodate slightly over twenty guests.

When we were there for dinner on a weekday night, the restaurant was almost full. We were surprised as the location was rather inaccessible. But after having a meal there, I can understand why Suprette is slowly gaining popularity. The food is delicious, hearty and unpretentious.

Like the restaurant, the menu itself is small. There is a breakfast menu (served daily from 7am to 11am, and 2.30pm on weekends) consisting of items such as Corned Beef Hash, Ricotta Pancakes and Western Omelette. For lunch and dinner, you can choose from five starters, five main courses and two desserts.

We started with the Seared Scallops ($16), which were very disappointing. Four tiny pieces atop a bunch of shaved leek… Let’s just say if I do visit Suprette again, I will steer clear from this dish.

The Crispy Pork Belly on Crostini ($14) fared slightly better. But considering that the main courses are only a few dollars more, I would probably just skip the starters and order more main courses to share.

We tried all the main courses except for the Vegetable Stack ($22), which was not available that day. I was especially enamoured of the Spicy Seafood Spaghetti ($25). The pasta was cooked right and it had generous seafood ingredients.

The Suprette Burger ($24), pictured above in the first photo, was superb. It came with a tasty beef patty topped with gruyere cheese in a nicely-toasted bun. There is the option of adding sides – such as bacon, mushroom, avocado, or foie gras – but the burger is so good on its own that you won’t need them.

Also good was the Hanger Steak & Marrow ($29). The beef was tender and flavourful. A very well-executed dish.

The Ricotta and Spinach Stuffed Chicken Breast ($23) may sound a bit less glamorous than some of the dishes above, but don’t let the name fool you. In fact, this dish surprised all of us. I am not a fan of breast meat, but Suprette’s rendition completely won me over. This was easily one of the most tender chicken breast meat I have had.

Desserts are probably not Suprette’s strength, so I would suggest going somewhere else to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Our conclusion was that despite some rather lacklustre starters, the food was very good. Suprette fits the bill when I am looking for a spot to have a good meal and some drinks with friends.

Omakase Burger at The Grandstand (formerly Turf City) has been winning lots of fans – some people even proclaimed it as the best burger in Singapore – so I had to make a trip there to see what the fuss is about.

Omakase cheeseburger ($13.90) is made up of a delicious hand-ground beef patty with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato and sauce in a nicely toasted bun. The perfect burger? Almost. Omakase’s burger was indeed very good, but it was tiny and not exactly as satisfying. That said, I have had plenty of mediocre burgers with much higher price tags, so it is still probably one of the better burgers around.

Roadhouse Restaurant (formerly Cafe Hacienda) at Dempsey Road is a modern American Diner — opened by the Prive Group — that serves hearty food in a rustic yet contemporary setting. It is one of the few restaurants in Singapore that uses Josper Grill to char-grill their meats and burger patties.

While I’d been meaning to try the food for some time now, because of a busy schedule, I only managed to visit it recently. After eating there, I have to say Roadhouse is a place where you can go for weekend brunch with your family; or a nice dinner with a group of friends.

On the menu, it has a variety of burgers: from the signature bacon marinated burger ($23); to the cajun chicken burger ($20); and the miso cod burger ($27) – there is a choice for everyone. They also have quesadillas ($13), tacos ($12), salads ($13), and main courses ($16-48).

During the weekends, roadhouse has a brunch menu (available from 9am to 4pm) with selections like pancakes, eggs benedict ($16), ultimate breakfast ($22), fluffy pancakes ($14), and cheese omelette ($16).

When asked to recommend the best burger on the menu, the staff pointed us to the bacon marinated burger ($23).

It was indeed, a fantastic burger – homemade bun, streaky bacons, caramelised onions, sauteed mushrooms, and 170g Josper-grilled wagyu patty. Utterly delicious.

They also do very good milkshakes ($12) – chocolate, vanilla, and coffee. I probably would not pay so much for a milkshake, but there’s no denying that it is one of the better milkshakes in town.

We also ordered a side of mac & cheese ($18) to share. I think it is good enough to get a spot on my upcoming best mac & cheese post.

Then, we had pancakes. It was rather different from the usual ones. If you are a fan of light and fluffy pancakes, Roadhouse’s version is probably not your type. The pancakes ($14) here are thick, dense, and cake-y.

And what’s brunch without eggs benedict? Fans of Prive Bakery Cafe will be happy to know that Roadhouse has the same good and reliable eggs benedict ($16).

You are probably thinking that we had a big group to share the food, but no, there was only two of us. Even though we had already ordered a lot of food, I couldn’t stop myself when I saw the BBQ U.S spare ribs ($26 for half rack, $40 for whole rack) on the menu.

They turned out to be pretty awesome. Fork-tender, lick-your-fingers good ribs. YUM.

We were very full after finishing all the dishes, but I must have desserts. Out of the eight items on the dessert menu, the S’more ice cream cake ($12) caught my eyes. It was not fantastic, but decent enough to end the brunch on a sweet note.

Overall, a satisfying meal though I think the brunch items could have been a little more wow. That being said, Roadhouse has one of the best burgers in town; you must make a trip down if you love burgers. The meats, cooked using Josper grill, are also very good.

Fatboy’s Burger Bar has many options on the menu, but what makes them special is that there is the option of building your own burger. Otherwise, just go for their signature Fatboy’s Bastard Burger.

There are many options on Roadhouse’s menu, but my favourite choice is the Bacon Marinated Burger ($23) – homemade bun, streaky bacons, caramelised onions, sauteed mushrooms, and 170g Josper-grilled wagyu patty. Utterly delicious.

With a price tag of $30, one would expect a lot from the Morton’s USDA Prime Burger. Does it really live up to expectations? We are happy to report that it is excellent. Juicy, tender, and flavourful, the prime burger from the bar at Morton’s Steakhouse sets a high benchmark for the other places in the market.

Relish by Wild Rocket is an upmarket burger restaurant in Singapore. Most of the burgers are priced between $14 – 18, which I have to say is excellent value for the quality. The Wild Rocket Burger - a medium-rare beef patty sandwiched between two toasted bun, with arugula, sarawak pepper cream and sun-dried tomato relish – is comfort food at its best, and something that you can eat on a regular basis.

Other burgers on the menu include: Blue Cheese & William Pear Beef Burger ($18.50), Chicken Satay Burger ($14.60), Bacon & Cheese Beef Burger ($16.40), and a Soft Shell Chilli Crab Burger ($15.60), which was surprisingly good.

&Made is a burger joint by the Delicia Group and Chef Bruno Menard, who previously helmed a 3-Michelin Star restaurant in Tokyo.

I have been to &Made several times, and while their burgers are made of good quality ingredients, they lack a certain ‘oomph’. In short, they are decent, but not life-changing.

That said, I still believe that &Made is worth a visit for two reasons. First, the location at Pacific Plaza is not only very convenient, but also relatively quiet – I can have a nice dinner without facing the crazy crowd in town. Second, the burgers, while not out-of-this-world good, are simple and comforting.

De Burg Burger (formerly known as Sunshine @ Carries Cafe) used to be located in a condominium at Farrer Drive. It recently shifted operations to a coffee shop at Ghim Moh (Updated: Bukit Merah). My hunt for the best burger in Singapore led me to De Burg after two of my friends told me that they had very good burgers here.

“OMG Brad, you need to try this. There is a new burger place in Ghim Moh, and they have the BEST BURGER in Singapore.” My friend was so excited that he forgot to mention the name and address. After calming down, he gave me more details about the new burger place, De Burg,

A new western stall in coffee shop that has good burger? I was not convinced. It sounded very Botak Jones-ish to me. But when another friend subsequently tweeted that De Burg (the name of the new burger place) has the best burger in Singapore, I reckoned that there is no harm giving it a try.

De Burg has around 13-14 burgers on the menu (choose from 100g or 200g patty) and some of them are: Crab Burger (Blue Swimmer Crab Claw Meat), Pork Burger (Grilled Aus Pork patty), Mexican Burger (Grilled Aus Beef Patty with Salsa), lamb burger with Nutella, and a beef burger with Wagyu patty.

The highlight of the burger menu is definitely the $25 De Burg Decadence. Grilled Aus wagyu patty with cheese, bacon and portobello mushroom, it is only available on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays. Again, it is the debate on how much are you willing to pay for Western food in a coffee shop.

Tomatoes have many benefits and it has become a fixture on my daily routine.

So I was happy to see that the Pork Burger ($8.45 for 100g/$12.95 for 100g) from De Burg had a slice of tomato, and lots of greens alongside the tender and juicy pork patty. A very decent burger if you do not take beef.

With a 150g of chicken thigh patty, the Chicken Burger ($8.95) had an interesting twist in the form of the salted egg yolk sauce. I guess I am biased with anything-salted-egg-yoke, but the burger was actually pretty good. It could be better if there was more sauce though.

If you are an vegetarian, De Burg’s Portobello burger (6.95) is definitely the one to go for. Otherwise, we thought that the burger was pretty run-of-the-mill; the portobello mushroom was burnt, there was nothing fanciful about the vegetarian burger. Okay maybe it is just me, but I find it hard to accept a burger without meat.

Apparently there is a vegetarian burger restaurant at Eunos, VeganBurg that serves tasty burgers without meat. I shall try that next!

There are a few variations of the beef burger on De Burg’s menu. From the default Plain Beef Burger, to Blackpepper burger, and Mexican Burger, all of them use the same Grilled Aus Beef patty with different ingredients and sauces.

We had the Hawailian Burger ($8.45 for 100g/$12.95 for 200g) which came with a Grilled Aus Beef patty, cheese and pineapple. The patty was slightly dry and on hindsight, we should have gone for the 200g patty instead. De Burg’s beef burger was good, but I wouldn’t call this the best burger in Singapore.

* * *

De Burg has pretty good burgers and most of them are priced reasonably between $8 for the 100g patty and $12 for 200g patty.

Their tag-line is “Burgers are not fast food”, and I agree that good burgers are definitely not junk food. If you are in the Buona Vista/Holland Village area, do drop by De Burg and try some of their burgers.

Note: They have since shifted to Bukit Merah, the stall at Ghim Moh Road is no longer in operation.

The best thing about having a food blog is knowing the food bloggers from the other countries. I’m always very happy whenever my overseas friends come to Singapore as it gives me the opportunity to play host and bring them around to try the best food in Singapore.

Republic of Steak is a steakhouse restaurant that serves cheap and good Western Food in Singapore. Although I have heard about it from some friends before, I didn’t manage to check it out, and it was a coincidence that we went there for dinner.

When I was in Kuala Lumpur back in November, alilfatmonkey brought me to some amazing places, so when he was in town last week, I was determined to feed him well. But he was on a tight schedule and it was a very last minute thing, so I didn’t manage to plan much. When we were heading to Standing Sushi Bar/Food For Thought at Singapore Art Museum (8Q SAM), we passed by Republic of Steak at Victoria Street and the lure of burger was too much for us to resist.

Craving 1, Common Sense 0.

Given the name Republic of Steak, it feels wrong to order anything-other-than-steak. But I was adamant to satisfy my craving for a good and juicy burger. Seeing that this was only our first stop for the night, we decided to share a Republic Burger, and it was a wise choice (see picture above) because the burger is a monster!!

When the waitress brought the burger to our table, our first reaction was: “you gotta be kidding me!”. The republic Burger is HUGE. For $12.90 nett, the set comes with a drink and one side (choose from coleslaw, broccoli, salad, baked potatoes, mashed potato, fries, potato salad, onion rings, buttered rice).

The size of the deep-fried onion floss probably made a difference to the overall image of the burger, but still, it was a 200gm beef patty topped with streaky bacon, melty cheese, crunchy lettuce and fresh tomato.

How do you eat the damn burger?

First, compressed the burger by pushing everything together. Second, make sure the napkins are ready on hand, this is going to be a messy affair. Third, use both hands to grab the burger, and try to have a bite of everything in one mouthful. If you fail, use knife and fork as a last resort, but warning: it won’t be as fun, or taste as good that way.

Republic of Steak is a pretty decent place with cheap and good western food, I will definitely go back to try the Angus steak ($19.90) and some of the other main courses like Norwegian King Salmon ($13.90), Pork Ribs ($18.90) and Breaded Chicken ($6.90).

Fatboys The Burger Bar is a burger place in Singapore that serves comfort food, burgers, milkshakes and floats. I will get to that in a while, but now I want to tell you more about what I think of burgers, in general.

Before I started this Singapore Food Blog, I thought that burgers only came from fast food restaurants. Can you believe that I spent the first two decades of my life having only them? That’s not all, I was also convinced that they were the definition of good burgers.

Learning that burgers were more than the ones from fast food restaurants had a strange impact on me, it made me think twice about everything in life. It was like learning from the beauty blogger about how much make up can do. I think it’s definitely easier to be a guy where we can just have our burgers in peace, without worrying about smudged lipstick.

Thankfully, I started to explore different food places and had my fair share of good burgers in the recent years. It was the Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen’s burger that changed my perception of how a cheap and good burger should be.

The burger that I had from Fatboys Burger Bar Upper Thomson road was a while back. It was a quick dinner before my TV interview at Mediacorp, so I didn’t want to gorge myself silly.

I shuddered at the thought of double beef patties, extra thick bacon, cheddar cheese, and a fried egg — that’s how big the Fat Basterd is! So instead of the popular Fat Basterd ($15), I went for the Wimpy burger (which is half of the former). For 11 bucks, you get a reasonable beef patty and the other ingredients, which isn’t a bad deal at all.

I’m not sure if it’s the same for you, but for my family, we hardly have soft drinks at home, unless it’s the festive holidays like Chinese new year or Christmas. Not that I’m complaining anyway, I very much prefer to have soy milk, fruit juice and milk. But when it comes to having a burger, I think nothing beats a glass of cold icy coke. Nobody can deny the fact that burger & coke are the perfect couple – they are meant to be together.

Nursing a hangover from the party last night? Have a burger for breakfast. Frustrated with work for the whole morning? The burger is the perfect choice for lunch. Feeling hungry but it’s not yet dinner time? Easy, have a burger. Hungry and tired after a busy day?

My dear, you need a burger.

* * *

I’m not saying the Fatboys Burger is fantastic, I’m just telling you that they are very decent for the price. The best burger in Singapore? Maybe, maybe not. Go try it for yourself. If I’m in the Upper Thomson or Mohamed Sultan road area, I can definitely see myself going back to Fatboys Burger Bar again to build my own burger.

I always get lost in the East. But sometimes, I think it’s a nice feeling to get lost somewhere and you will feel so much happier when you eventually find the place that you want to go.

We passed by Simpang Bedok while on our way to Foo House Cafe & Bar, and someone said that I’m a suaku (country bumpkin) as I have never been to the area before. Anyway, Foo House Cafe is located at Jalan Pari Burong, Picardy Garden off Upper Changi Road. I’m very sure that I will not go to that area unless we are driving, otherwise I will definitely get lost!

We started off with the Veal and Pork sausages from the Banger & Mash ($15.90). The mash potato had a very ‘clean’ taste, so I left that for the others while I attacked the sausages.

“Are the Magic Mushrooms ($13.80) enchanted?”

We had no idea how ‘magical’ the mushrooms were, but the grilled portobello and sauteed shrooms were great in the cream base sauce. It’s a little pricey to pay so much money just for mushrooms though, for the same price we could probably get another main dish.

The Salmon Steak ($18.90) was splashed with the excellent cream base sauce, which complimented the fish perfectly. The tinge of pink was simply irresistible, and I love how the salmon crumbled in my mouth.

The burger from Foo House is a monster! We were blown away by the sheer size of the ‘thing’. The Picardy Monster Beef Burger ($16.90 + $1 for each additional topping) cost twenty bucks after the addition of four toppings (Bacon, egg, caramelized onions and mushroom). Oh yes, I have included it in my list of Singapore’s Best Burgers.

This is a combination of greed and lust.

I preferred the Salmon Steak to the Pan Seared Seabass ($16.90), but the rest enjoyed both fishes thoroughly.

My partner had the Seafood Spaghetti ($19.90), which came with a generous serving of mussels, shrimps, and calamari. The pasta made me really happy. I know this might sound a little exaggerating, but it was like being kissed. Okay, maybe not. Nothing in this world can give you the same feeling as a kiss, but we really like the spaghetti.

We wrecked havoc on the Apple Crumble that was topped with a scoop of cold creamy ice cream. It was disappointing, and thankfully there was another dessert to keep us occupied.

Deep-Fried Mars Bar! OH MY GOD!

Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with your eyesight, you read that correctly. Deep-fried Mars Bar. How on earth did someone come up with this genius invention? Deep-fried food always taste good, and Mars bar is just Mars bar; there’s no need to say how good it is. When you put both of them together, and add another scoop of ice cream beside it — Dear whoever in charge of guilt, I have sinned.

* * *

Foo House serves big portions of Western food at reasonable pricing, if you are looking for good food in the East of Singapore, do give them a try!
