“My all time favorite is chili crab with deep-fried mantou, what’s yours?” I asked on twitter.
Everyone replied enthusiastically, the popular choices are pepper crab, chili crab, crab bee hoon, salted egg yoke crab and butter crab. Even though I just had chili crab and double baked cheese crab at Palm Beach Seafood recently, I find myself craving for the thick, sweet-and-spicy gravy of the chili crab, with deep fried mantou of course.
While we are at the topic of crab, I realize people like to debate on which restaurant has the best crab in Singapore. Like what I always say: whichever place you like – has the best crab!
HOW TO ENTER THE PALM BEACH SEAFOOD CRAB GIVEAWAY
I totally understand how it feels to be on your end, looking at all the photos and yet cannot get to taste the food; so I’m happy to announce that Palm Beach Seafood has kindly agreed to giveaway $50 vouchers (no minimum spending required) to 4 lucky readers. If you want a chance to win, here is what to do:
1. Leave a comment on this post
Tell us what’s your favorite crab and why. I’m asking for your favorite style of cooking for the crab, it does not have to be from a particular restaurant. Just tell me what style do you like, and if you happen to like an exotic way of cooking crabs which can be anything for example, Double Baked Cheese Crab, let us know! (***updated***)
And ONE entry per person, you are encouraged to get your friends to join the contest but please play fair and do not post multiple comments under different names.
2. Use a valid & contactable email
Please use a valid & contactable email when you post the comment. I will email the winners shortly after the contest ended, remember to check your email on Monday.
3. And the Four lucky Winners . . .
The four lucky winners will be decided by a highly sophisticated method, and I reserve the right to re-pick if there’s any discrepancy or foul-play involved. I know there are folks from the States, Malaysia, Australia, and other countries reading my blog, but unfortunately this contest is only open to those currently residing in Singapore. But all of you are welcome to share your thoughts too!
The closing date for this giveaway is Sunday 28th of Feb 2359 hrs, and so you have exactly forty eight hours before it ends.
I hope you enjoy the little gift I have for everyone!
random.org never picks #1!!! so maybe i’ll try later =p
I love Chilli Crabs!
Chili Crabs are great for a person like me because I am a lover of spicy food and Chilli Crabs are perfect since it’s spicy but not too spicy at the same time. I love the sauce and I love how when you dip the mantous into it, it makes you feel so blissful.
I love Black Pepper Crabs @ Eng Seng, still road. Not too wet or too dry, and they are spicy!!!!
crab beehhon at ming kee. i dream about it……………
I love creamy crab! I’m not really a fan of spicy stuff so this one really works for me. Creamy, slightly sweet, peppery, yummy!
Woooo! I love chilli crab. Especially the mouth watering sauce.
I had my first chilli crab during my grandfather’s birthday. But now he’s gone, so everytime I have chilli crab it reminds me of him.
Also, the fried man tous is a must!
Pick me pick me!
chilli crab and mantou! because its a deadly combination!
I know I can’t win but still!
My favourite crab is a dead crab. Preferably freshly dead. And in a chilli spa. Yay!
chilli crabs were at the center of a dispute between 2 countries. That just goes to show the extent of its popularity…
and the gravy is so versatile; you can pour extras on rice or anything else tt you can think of!
I love the white pepper crab @ No Signboard!!! The taste of white pepper and spring onions with the crab makes it a gorgeous combination.
I don’t really like chilli crab but i love black pepper crab!! the gravy is awesome and it goes well with noodles and rice!! sometimes i would use the leftover sauce and heat it up to accompany rice or noodles!!
Happy Crab @ Geylang!
Each crab is served individually, slightly BBQ with a brush of black pepper sauce. Sweetness of the crab flesh is best consumed & tasted together with the served belachan, mayonnaise & wasabi sauce.
Does crab bee hoon count? I like it the soup is so sweet and nourishing!
It’s been a long time since me and my family dine at Long Beach. They used to serve kick ass Black Pepper Crab. Love the peppery taste. I wonder if it is still the same.
I simply love the Chilli Crab from Jumbo Seafood, but haven’t had a chance to try Palm Beach before… Looking at the photo, it seems to be a close fight!
Let me be one of the winners and I’ll tell you which one I prefer… LOL
butter crabs are my favourite, though i’ve only had them at mellben. the thick creamy gravy marries well with the crab meat, and we can never decide whether to order more man tou or how to get the best man tou to gravy ratio.
despite the feeling of our arteries clogging up with all that sinful cholesterol, there’s no stopping us. literally, to die for.
Crab. I love Chili Crabs at No Signboard. They are usually not so salty and is very tasty.
Does Crab cakes also count? I love crab cakes done at PS Cafe in Dempsey.
i love salted egg yolk crabs!*awesome-ness
the combination is just mind blowing n the non-stop licking of fingers. haha!

I like to indulge in yummy crabs but I dislike waiting excruciating long for them to end up in my tummy. So I select auspicious hours to visit the respective makan places.
So you see, there’s a crab for every occasion!
Hello Guys, thanks for all the comments, please keep them coming. Just in case some of you misunderstood my question: I’m asking for what’s your favorite style of cooking for crabs, and not where – it does not have to be from a particular restaurant. Just tell me what style do you like, and if you happen to like an unique way of cooking crabs which can be anything for example, Double Baked Cheese Crab, let us know!
For those who have posted, don’t worry your comments are valid. This is only a reminder for those who have not enter their entries.
I lurve chilli crabs with lotsa gravy, chock full of crab roe and eggs! Those that i can drown my mantou into.. Oh gawd… its simply divine! Miss the ones my granny used to cook….
Steamed! just plain steamed, if the crab is fresh, no bells and whistles are required, just the original sweetness of the crab meat.
I love eating crabs because it is sweet revenge for the many times I have been pinched by them.
I especially love the Chilli types!
Yes yes, I am in Australia but just wanted to share my thoughts!
Good work Brad
I love butter crab, with rich creamy gravy… it’s aromatic and the consistency is good for those who do not like the savory chilli crab.
and the gravy is good as dips for fried mantous too!
this is so exciting!!!
Chili crab, definitely! The very first crab I’ve ever eaten was done in this style, and it remains my favourite.
Fried mantous are a plus!
I’d have to go for the crab at Defu Lane – except I can’t decide between Chilli and Butter… darn. I’d skip the mantou since I don’t mind drinking the chilli sauce direct, heh heh
I absolutely love black pepper crabs!
i like salted egg crabs coz they are yummy!
i like salted egg crabs too!! hahabear, will you marry me? oh right you already did
I love the chilli crab from wu zhao pai!! So yummy ;D
i love basically any types of crab, and is constantly looking out for to try! i’ve tried steamed, chilli, black pepper, butter, salted egg, cereal, and cold crab.
but my favourite will be chilli crab (of course, it’s like the favourite of almost all singaporeans) as well as salted egg crab!
i love the salted egg crab at the serangoon ave 2 coffeeshop, it’s quite different in the sense that they fry the salted egg into strands, and then coat it onto the crab! not like the normal salted egg crabs which tend to have some sort of gravy, where you can see lumps of egg yolk!
of course chilli crab rocks too, because i especially like to eat it with the fried mantou! but sometimes it’s way too spicy for me!
so it’s salted egg crab ftw!
?? crabs from Mellben Seafood, comes in a uber creamy sauce and sprinkled w cereal
taste heavenly w deep fried mantous
yay
as abv, Jin Sha (golden sand) Crabs.
Salted egg crabs are definitely my favourite. No doubt, it’s one cholesterol-laden indulgence, but savoury yolk crumbs really make a great pair with sweet and juicy crab flesh. The umami sauce is really addictive, I’m always left greedily licking it up!
I like crab cooked with tanghoon because you get to eat the crab AND the crab-flavour-infused-tanghoon
so you get to get twice the crab flavour quantity-wise
oh yum. wish i was in singapore to try
actually all crabs are lovely…anything crabby is LOVEEE!!!
but lets go for something different…COLD CRABS!!! whooooo~ cold fresh tasting sweet meat for the kill! xD
*the coldness brings out the sweetness of the crab meat which is seriously HEAVENLY (provided of course the crabs used are f-r-e-s-h!) =D
My favourite crab is a blend of pepper and chilly, salty and sweet. This gives me a wide variety of instantaneous taste. Yummmmmm
Food Critic – ATPL
I like chilli crabs, because of the fried mantou hahah. And of course the crabs have to be handled well so that the meat doesn’t stick to the shell. On another day when I feel like eating ‘lighter’, I like beehoon crab!
Like you, my favorite is the chilli crab cos of the gooey sweet sauce. So good i pour it over my rice and eat it like that
I like the creamy butter crab from Palm Beach.
Well doused in thick creamy cheese sauce with fried bits of butter and a very soft-creamy taste/smell.
Cheese lover will love this unique mouthwatering dish.
I love butter crabs!! tantalising taste esp when fried mantous are dipped into its creamy gravy. Loves!
I love butter crabs.
It rich, creamy and yummy! although Singaporeans usually like Chili crab, but i don’t cos i can’t take spicy.
definitely has to be the salted egg crabs. hign cholesterol and all, it’s definitely worth it!
Salted Egg Crab
i totally agree, ppl put so much debate into which is the best this or that, which is the most tasty meal.. etc.. but at the end of the day, as long as all the key factors are there (fresh ingredients, great cooking style, value for money) the best place is usually what we like best and keep going back for. less debate. more eating.
i love chilli crab with extra gravy and mantous!! because it is so flavourful it explodes in my mouth. boomz.
chilli crab, with you tiao. tastes like a heart attack waiting to happen, which probably explains why i like it so much.
Salted Egg Crab~ Double enjoyment- Saltiness of the century egg and tender sweetness of crabs. *drool*
Creamy crab c/w sauce with a hint of curry leaves and chilli which will not overpowered the taste of the natural flavour of the crawling seafood. Wipe off the savoury crab and wipe off the lusious sauce with the mantou. Complete meal.
