It is unheard of to skip their Flame Grilled Pork Jowl with Thai Dip (S$15.80) because the succulent pork slices are grilled to perfection and come with a slightly charred exterior that goes really well with the lean meat.

Another classic dish that is worthy of praises includes the Pineapple Tom Yum soup served in Husk (S$16.80). Diners get to drink it straight from a pineapple husk and we’ve got to say, this is the most aesthetically-pleasing tom yum soup we have ever seen so far! Other noteworthy dishes are the Thai Soufflé Steamed Egg (S$10.80) and Pineapple Sang Som (S$26.80).

#4 GREENWOOD FISH MARKET

The chic seafood restaurant is the ideal social gathering spot for groups of friends and is also a romantic dining destination for couples too. We always enjoy a visit to Greenwood Fish Market because of the plethora of fresh seafood that is available on their menu.

Look forward to the upcoming 6th World Oyster Festival from 1st to 31st July where you get to sample on different species of oysters (prices vary according to species of oysters) that are sourced from all over the world—Mary Points, Ostra Regal and Barron Points are just some to name. Boy, we had such a good time slurping them all up and comparing the differences in taste. Yes, each variety of oyster has their own unique identity!

Otherwise, opt for the Rock Lobster Thermidor (S$69.95) if you are up for something more premium—the luscious meat was covered in a blanket of brandy cream sauce topped with cheese before it is baked in the oven till golden brown. Another excellent option is the Hot Smoked Ocean Trout (S$35.95) which came with Portobello mushroom confit and grilled lettuce.

#5 MISKA CAFÉ

With tables that come with colourful squared tiles and an al fresco dining area, Miska Café emits cheerful and laid-back vibes that encourage you to stay on for a tipple or more.

Modern mediterranean food is what Miska Café specialises in and their menu boasts a mixture of Greek, Turkish and Middle Eastern food. Prepare yourself for some fresh produce, rich spices and exotic flavours that are uncommon on our tiny island.

We recommend the Lamb Kofta Wrap (S$22) for the hearty eaters as the wraps that are served to you are filled with generous portions of grilled marinated lamb, thinly sliced onions, romaine lettuce, tomato slices, tzatziki sauce and parsley. All wraps come with your choice of side salad or fries.

New on the menu is the Shrimp Shakshouka (S$26), which is essentially oven-baked eggs with roasted stewed tomato, fetacheese, chilli peppers, onion and a generous serving of shrimps. If not, another typical Mediterranean option is the Chicken Sanga (S$18.50) and it features breaded chicken, tomato chutney and machego cheese in between ciabatta bread.

#6 MUSEO

Museo is where the artistic community will find like-minded creative individuals; the restaurant-cum-bar also houses its own art studio so guests are able to unleash their inner Picasso potential to the fullest. All necessary supplies—including a canvas, unlimited acrylic paint and brushes—are provided.

When it comes to their food, Museo aims to reshape the way you think about fine dining. Their casual fine dining concept involves serving food in elegant glass jars which invoke some fun into the dining experience.

Some dishes to try are the Cold Pasta (S$11), Pan-Seared Hokkaido Sea Scallop (S$14), Smoked Roast Pork (S$12) and Deep-Fried Camembert Cheese (S$13) before rounding your meal with the refreshing Red Wine Poached Pear with Berry Compote (S$15) and Cream Cheese Panna Cotta with Watermelon Freeze (S$13).

Should you be looking for something more luxurious, the Buttered Glaze Lobster (S$45) that comes with lobster bisque, couscous, caviar, Chardonnay jelly and watermelon cloud will definitely be something worthy to splurge on.

#7 MYKONOS ON THE BAY

If taking the next flight out to Greece is not on your calendar anytime soon, Mykonos On The Bay is the next best alternative. Decked out in a calm oasis of blue and white interior, walking into the restaurant is as if you are walking along the coastline of Mykonos.

There is no better way to discover Greece than through its gastronomy and at Mykonos On The Bay, you can be assured that every dish is prepared with utmost precision by following traditional Greek cooking techniques.

Start your meal with the Mykonos Dip Platter (S$26) where you are treated to three types of dips to pair with homemade pita bread—namely Tzatziki (cucumber yoghurt), Taramasalata (fish roe) and Melitzanosalata (eggplant).

Other crowd favourites include Graviera Saganaki (S$15.50), Moussaka (S$27) Pita Gyros (S$27.50) and Baklava (S$15.90).

#8 SABIO BY THE SEA, TAPAS BAR & GRILL

Paying homage to Spanish cuisine, Sabio by the Sea, Tapas Bar & Grill has a culinary team that is trained to whip up impeccable Spanish tapas and grilled dishes. The charming restaurant is where working professionals head to after work for a splendid dinner and their range of alcoholic drinks.

For communal dining, the Seafood Paella (S$29) is an excellent option that will satisfy all the seafood lovers at the table. Just imagine the medley of fresh seafood atop a bed of warm, fluffy rice that has been seasoned with saffron and other spices.

If you are just looking for some light bites to go along with drinks, their Ceviche de Gambas (S$18)—essentially Tiger prawns served with corn tortilla chips—and Carpaccio de Pulpo (octopus carpaccio, S$18) are the top picks on their tapas menu.

#9 SCHMEAR

Schmear—opened by a New Yorker who wanted to share his passion for bagels—is where you can walk into the smell of freshly baked New York-style bagels and over-the-top meat platters.

Their hand-rolled NY bagels are obviously the best sellers on the menu and you can either choose to personalise your own bagel with various toppings or go for scrumptious options such as The New Yorker (S$8) and The Central Park (S$14). These bagels come with different types of cream cheese and sides such as salmon and eggs—talk about a breakfast fit for kings.

For the carnivores, Schmear’s BBQ Babyback Ribs (S$32, full size) and the House-Ground Steak Burger (S$18) will leave your tummies satisfied and happy. The former is succulent pork ribs coated with Schmear’s homemade tangy BBQ sauce and the latter is a 200g house-ground all-beef patty with caramelised onions, California cheddar cheese, BBQ sauce, lettuce and tomato, with the option to add bacon, egg, and/or guacamole ($3 each or $8 for all).

Kith Café is showcasing two affordable quality wines from sought-after indie wine makers – the 2013 Schloss Lieser Riesling and 2014 “Like Raindrops” Grenache – both of which are extremely easy to drink and great for novices.

The 2014 “Like Raindrops” Grenache (S$17++ per glass, S$87++ per bottle) is an organic red wine from the popular indie Jauma vineyards famed for their limited, quality natural wines – a good start for those who have yet to embrace the classic red’s overpowering taste. Looking for a thirst-quenching cold beverage with no alcohol content? Try Kith Café’s refreshing Mango & Mint Fruit Cooler (S$8.50++) – it is a lovely summer treat.

Museo wins the best presentation of their cocktails that taste just as good as they look, if not better. The Passionfruit Sling (S$18) and Autumn Sweater (S$20) were both winners to us, and you should have a go at it if you are into fruity cocktails.

We’ve been to Museo a couple of times and its sexy yet non-intimidating interior never fails to make us feel so relaxed. With great drinks, of course.

#6 MISKA CAFÉ

Miska Café has a beautiful alfresco seating that has one of the best views of the breathtaking marina of Quayside Isle. It is especially beautiful at night where you can have a beer with your buddies and enjoy a lively chat.

A wide array of cold bottled beer, margaritas, cocktails and specialty drinks are on the menu, and there should be something for everyone here.

#7 MYKONOS ON THE BAY

Dining at Mykonos On The Bay is like being transported to Mykonos in Greece because the owners’ attention to detail is extremely commendable. The alfresco dining is perfect by night, where you can enjoy the lovely view of Sentosa Cove, while sipping on your drinks. Their in-house concoction, the Mykonos Martini (S$16) tastes as refreshing as it looks.

If you are a big fan of Grecian or Mediterranean food, they have a wide variety that is perfect to pair up with your drinks.

#8 NOTE DE SICILIA

Note De Sicilia is not just a gelato shop. We are great fans of their amazing alcoholic creations of Prosecco with Ice-cream (S$15), cleverly named as the Prosicilia. The combination of Italy’s two greatest gourmet creations have been merged into an awesome treat; we watched in awe as a scoop of raspberry gelato was dunked into the sparkling white wine.

If you prefer sticking to conventions, you can still indulge in a glass of prosecco (S$12) or devour the gelato itself (S$10).

Quayside Fish Bar and Bistro takes immense pride in their creative liqueur concoctions. Each heavenly creation is a well-balanced tropical mixture of fresh fruits and garden-fresh herbs. Good news – these photogenic drinks taste as good as they look.

Rekorderlig fans will be thrilled to find out that Quayside Fish Bar and Bistro has integrated the Swedish cider with Brandy to create Rekorderlig Sangria (S$60++ per jug). Dig into the pretty Blue Marina (S$18++ per glass) or The Quayside Affair (S$18++). The former is made of Vodka, blue Curacao, elderflower and sprite while the latter is a Prosecco-based invention that truly represents summer with its high fruit content of blueberries, mint leaves, lime and raspberries.

#11 SABIO BY THE SEA, TAPAS BAR & GRILL

Sabio By The Sea, Tapas Bar & Grill is an authentic Spanish restaurant serving sangrias so good that you would find yourselves craving for more upon completion. Indeed, their sangrias have been honed to perfection and had us instantly teleported back to our holiday in Barcelona.

Fruits have been stewed in a wine claret base before they are mixed with carbonated water, sugar and Sabio By The Sea, Tapas Bar & Grill’s in-house specialty secret concoction. The refreshing wine-infused fruit punch is the perfect remedy for the unbearable heat and is available in red or white (S$12++ per glass, S$49++ per jug).

Happy hour promotions at &Made Burger Bistro is not a typical weekday affair – it is a joyous duration of 8 hours daily (from 12pm to 8pm). Gather your friends and celebrate the evening with a beer bucket of 5 bottles (Asahi, Corona and Spanish Apple Cider) at just S$45++. Patrons can also enjoy other attractive discounts of 1-for-1 selected wines (S$18++ per glass, S$88++ per bottle). If beer, cider and wine are not your cup of tea, opt for their mouthwatering cocktails (S$10++).

Pamper yourselves with their tasty frozen margarita (S$14++ per glass, S$38++ per jug) or stick to the classic mojito ($14++). We love the sweetened lychee version (S$14++) and those who have to shoulder the responsibility of driving can choose the virgin mocktail instead (S$8++).

MUSEO Restaurant & Bar is a great masterpiece.

If you haven’t heard, there is this enchanting restaurant that sits on the mezzanine level of Quayside Isle at Sentosa Cove, and it is known as the “Art on the Isle”. The divine combination of art and culinary take our breath away every single time, and each visit still charms us like never before.

It is like Picasso and Warhol had joined forces and blessed this space with their artistic flares. Filled with magic and astounding surprises at every corner and in every detail, MUSEO is one of the most romantic restaurants in Singapore. Its notably fine culinary execution makes the restaurant a perfect venue for dining – celebrate a special occasion here, or treat yourselves to an unforgettable night of arm jamming and regale cuisine.

Because dining at MUSEO is one sexy choice that you must not miss for the world.

First up, a little fun fact about MUSEO that we recently learned about. MUSEO is a unique restaurant with an in-house creative director who is also a talented Interior Designer, and he has channelled his love to the conceptualization of the restaurant. Evidently contemporary with elegant European touches, MUSEO is predominantly black with notes of posh glassware and sparse florals.

The all-occasion venue is a recurrent choice for events, weddings, proposals and dates. And this is no surprise. You don’t always find a restaurant in Singapore that exudes such desirability and comes with a view of the Marina to boast. By day, the restaurant is filled with sunlight and the chinaware glistens like gems; by night, the low-light setting calls for a romantic dinner for two.

Like its sister restaurant, Arteastiq, MUSEO has a dedicated area for art jamming where you can put your inspirations and artistic talents to good use. Sit down with a pot of house tea and work your thing on a canvas that you get to bring home after; yes to couple activities, and no more boring afternoons, right?

And we have to tell you how addicted we are to their signature Lychee Tea (S$11). The cold option is a longstanding favourite. With a strong infusion of the subtropical fruit, this tea quenches thirst best, and the mild sweetness lingers like a sweet dream. If you need your dose of alcohol, there are several fascinating cocktail choices.

Before having dinner, have a cocktail by the bar. The presentations of the cocktails at MUSEO have been elevated to be visually striking in keeping with its Arts themeWe tried the Passionfruit Sling (S$18) and Autumn Sweater (S$20) – the former is a tropical-flavoured concoction with whole passion fruit, cachaca, lemongrass and lime, all from Brazil; the latter is mysterious with warm notes of apricot and maple, paired with whisky, and sits with autumn leaves and crisp dried flowers.

The refreshing cocktails aside, MUSEO has also just introduced a new wine list which features wines from Australia, France, New Zealand, Spain, Italy and America.

The food menu is no less impressive. The fusion selection is appealing beyond its mere fancy creations, for you would be no less impressed than we were when the dishes are served to you. MUSEO’s chefs have insanely fantastic plating skills! Every dish is like a work of art, and simply true to the brand’s philosophy on art.

For starters, get a pot of Black Mussels & Clam (S$28) to share. They toss pretty tasty salads too. The Mezzanine platter is outstanding – for S$42, you get a delightful mix of Singapore’s local favourites with a modern touch. Or customise your own set at S$44, where you get to choose four out of eight items. Our pick is Picasso’s Blues – deep fried prawns flavoured with Lavender.

Now, the main courses. Where do we begin from? We had quite a feast and every item left an impression on us. The Two Way Lobster (S$38) is new on the menu, and MUSEO gave the most popular crustacean a twist by preparing it ala “Thermidor” style and with seafood otah stuffing.

The Truffle Mushroom Risotto & Hokkaido Sea Scallop (S$35) is also new, and it is our newfound favourite at MUSEO – plump rice cooked in parmesan cheese and fragrant truffle, together with even plumper scallops that are seared with a slight char. Brilliant!

We also tried the Squid Ink Linguine & Octopus (S$38), and while there is nothing extraordinary about the linguine, we savoured every piece of the grilled octopus that was perfectly complemented with the salty egg cream sauce. Sauteed Spinach to complete, for a varied texture and, you know, Mom says we must have our greens.

Carnivores can opt for the Sous Vide Beef Short Rib – at S$40, you get a whole smokey rib to yourself. Definitely the most value-for-money option in the new menu! Also a dish that surprised us was the Grilled U.S. Short Rib Boneless of Beef (S$40), which the ladies might prefer over the whole rib. Generous chunks of short rib carefully prepared with a beautiful shade of pink, soft and almost fork-tender, served with stalks of crunchy asparagus, lumps of sushi rice and an addictive and sweet homemade teriyaki sauce.

And no one is leaving without desserts. We know how difficult it is to pick only one when everything on the menu is so tempting, but we’d help with your dilemma. Go for the Vodka Chocolate Lava Cake (S$13). It is a true crowd-pleaser, and worry not, that amount of hard liquor ain’t enough to get you drunk. The Caramelized Banana Custard (S$15) comes sitting pretty in a waffle tulip shell, so that makes a fair option too.

Else, we can always count on the MUSEO Cheese Cake on Chocolate Soil (S$15). Served with garden berries, this reminds us of a flowerpot dessert, and we truly enjoyed the copious amount of chocolate soil!

Fans of MUSEO would be pleased to learn about their 30% off all main courses during lunch hours on weekdays. More reasons to visit the restaurant again, because the substantial discount means we can dine to our hearts’ content without having our wallets take a beating. If the regular price for the lobster is S$38, it would then be S$26.60. And the whole rib would be only S$28!

On regular times on a daily basis, there are a couple of set menus for you to indulge in as well. Have an alternative afternoon tea over snacks and tea – at S$58 for 2, cosy up with a mezzanine signatures platter and choice of two beverages from the specialty teas range, coffee or cioccolata. Go for the $65 for 2 option if you want a dessert to share too.

MUSEO’s “Luscious Dinner” is a 4-course set at S$68++ per person, and you get to customize your set with your favourites from Mezzanine, Mezzanine Premium, Entrees and Desserts menu. Available daily from 6-9pm, this makes a pretty grand choice and your date will be very impressed.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit MUSEO before, here’s a video to show you how the gorgeous the restaurant is.

And for those who are planning ahead to celebrate Christmas, MUSEO is offering its Christmas menu — 4-course set at S$79++/pax, 5-course set at S$92++/pax — from 8 to 25 Dec 2014.

There are some restaurants that one goes regularly, places that serve decent food at affordable prices. Then there are other places you go for special occasions – like a hot date, birthday celebration, or wedding anniversary.

When you are looking for somewhere to have a romantic dinner, Equinox Restaurant at Swissôtel The Stamford is one of those places that always come to mind. It has one of the best locations in Singapore, overlooking the beautiful city. But that aside, I also love that it is very versatile. You can bring your clients there for a business luncheon; hang out with your girlfriends over a leisure afternoon tea; or have a romantic date – it is a restaurant that is suitable for all occasions.

I recently sampled the new menu by Chef de Cuisine Lee Bennett, and it was a good meal. If you haven’t yet had the chance to try Equinox, give it a shot. If you have and it has been some time, it’s time to go back again.

Our amuse-bouche was a duo of lobster bisque and crab mayonnaise shooter. The lobster bisque was fantastic. If you are a fan of the smooth and creamy French soup, you must order the regular portion ($26) from the ala carte menu.

Next we had a salad ($24) – tasting of beetroot with braeburn apple, aged balsamic dressing, St. Maure goat’s cheese and toasted pine kernels. It was good, but nothing special.

The highlight of our meal was the 900g Dover Sole Meuniere. The fish was, without exaggerating, very very good. At $180 (sharing portion for two), it is not cheap. In fact, I think it is crazy to spend so much on fish. But the truth is, it was one of the best that I’ve had, and I would save up and come back for this.

We also tried the Gressingham duck breast ($70), but it did not leave a strong impression. The other main course, Rhug estate tenderloin of pork ($65) was much more interesting. It was served with scotch egg, prunes, celeriac puree, and whisky sauce. I thought that the whole combination went pretty well.

After we were done with the main courses, we had crêpes suzeïm ($34), and it came with tableside service – the server pushed a trolley out and prepared the crêpes right in front of us. It was really fun, and I would order this just for the “show”.

This was followed by a seasonal crème brûlée ($24), which after dipping our spoon into, we agreed was one of the best in town.

That’s not all. Besides the crepes and crème brûlée, Chef Lee also sent out a platter of desserts ($52 for two): pineapple carpaccio with lime, chilli syrup and coconut sorbet; Madagascar vanilla mousse with toasted sweet brioche and caramelised apple jelly; Jivara milk chocolate delice with a dark cherry sorbet; dark rum savarin with mascarpone espuma and crystallised orange; and citrus posset. While there were hits and misses, it was a wonderful way to finish on a sweet note.

A meal at Equinox is not cheap, but for the view and ambience of the place, it is definitely a place where you should go for a special occasion. If you are on a budget, I would suggest trying the 3 course set menu at $108.

For those of you who love champagne brunch, you must also check out their special Pink brunch – which is only available on the last Sunday of each month.

Perched at the top of Marina Bay Sands, KU DÉ TA has one of the best dining spots in Singapore. Contrary to popular belief, Ku De Ta is not a fine dining restaurant; it is positioned as a casual dining place where you can get a nice cocktail and order a few dishes to share with friends.

That said, a meal at Ku De Ta is not what you would consider to be ‘cheap’. One is expected to spend at least $70/pax (without drinks). The price, of course, might put off many people. But when you get to enjoy the panoramic view of Singapore’s skyline for the whole night, this is certainly a place that is worth splurging on.

The food is described as modern Asian cuisine, and before you conclude that it is ‘fusion’, let me assure you that it is nothing like what you’ve tried in other restaurants.

The menu is divided into different categories: Raw – with appetising starters like kingfish ceviche ($21), tuna tartare ($25), and aburi salmon sashimi ($22); Cold – an assortment of yummy sushi rolls and salads like California roll with yuzu mayonnaise ($20), spicy tuna roll ($19), and mizuna salad with pomelo ($13); Hot – consisting of pan fried foie gras with curry bread ($49), crispy-sticky baby squid ($16), and soya-glazed Hokkaido scallops ($32); Fish & Seafood – a small selection of the best creatures in the sea like grilled yellowfin tuna steak ($30), bamboo-roasted pacific black cod ($45), and yellow curry tempura ($24); Poultry & Meat – where you can get the finest meats like Rangers Valley Black Angus striploin ($54), honey-miso glazed roast Australian lamb sirloin ($48), and Berkshire pork belly steamed with Shaoxing wine ($36); and Desserts – a spell binding array of beautiful creations like warm chocolate cake with coconut filling ($16), mango lime pudding ($14), and whipped soy milk chocolate ($16).

As you can see, the menu is filled with intriguing flavours, and the dishes are done in a way to be shared by the entire table.

We started off with the sliced semi-fatty southern bluefin tuna ($48). Thick, fresh, and fatty slices of tuna. What’s there not to like?

Then, we continued with dishes from the Hot menu: crispy sticky baby squid ($16) and juicy ‘toh farms’ fried chicken ($23). Both of which were very addictive and we polished off easily.

Topped with tobiko, the takara roll ($25) with ohmi beef, pistachio and smoked chili was splendid.

The salmon loin roasted over charcoal ($32) was decent, but I found the soy-glaze a tad too heavy for my taste. The other main course that we shared was the cape grim 100% grass-fed red & Black Angus ribeye ($48). To be honest, I thought it was rather mediocre. I’d probably go for their signature Ohmi ribeye ($110/110g) on my next visit.

While I wasn’t blown away by the two main courses that we had, the desserts caught me by surprise. Ku De Ta has very fascinating desserts. If you just want to enjoy the view, I’d suggest coming here for a drink and dessert.

From the long list of sweets on the menu, we were recommended apple & honey ($14) and pistachio pain de genes ($16). Of the two, I was particularly impressed with the ‘apple & honey’ – which comprise fresh green apple, milk and honey cremeux, green apple granite, comb honey crumble, and green apple jelly.

The pistachio pain de genes, on the other hand, is an acquired taste. For one, it uses pineapple soup, white chocolate and curry ganache. Yes, you read that right. Pineapple soup and curry ganache.

You might probably be skeptical about it the unusual flavour combination, but personally I think it’s very unique, and you should order it to try (at least once) when you are dining at Ku De Ta.

The combination of the view and the design of the restaurant might make Ku De Ta one of Singapore’s sexiest restaurants.

Most people have the impression that I always eat at fine dining restaurants, but my friends would know that I usually prefer going to casual places that are cosy and provide good food at reasonable prices.

But sometimes if you want a very good meal, you really have to fork out top money for it. JAAN Restaurant at Swissotel is the prime example. I had one of my best meals of 2011 at JAAN. I’m going out on a limb and say that they are among the top restaurants in Singapore.

When you eat in one of those fine dining restaurants, you’re not just paying for the food. You’re also paying for everything that comes along with it: the location, the rent, the service, the plates, the view, and the ambience. JAAN has it all: central location at City Hall; highest restaurant in Singapore; breathtaking view of the city’s skyline; knowledgeable servers who do a good job between the dining room and kitchen; and most importantly, good food.

At lunch time, they have extremely good value for money set lunch: 3 course at $52 and 5 course at $82; and during dinner, there are two different choices, including the 5 course menu for $198 (with wine pairing $318), and 7 course menu for $238 (with wine pairing $418).

And of course, you can also order from the ala carte menu which has five appetisers ($46-52), five main courses ($82-118), and four desserts and cheese ($28-45).

We sat there waiting eagerly for the food to come, while having some wine. The amuse-bouche arrived on our table and I put it into my mouth without hesitation.

We were on a roll. The mushroom soup next was excellent. I took a sip, and the only word that came out of my mouth was: wow. This is coming from a guy who doesn’t fancy mushroom soup.

I didn’t want to fill my stomach with bread, but I couldn’t resist having one, okay two from the impressive selection of bread.

And then, we were served the Trumbetta Zucchini ($49) – burratina, basil, almonds and black olives. In terms of presentation, it was one of the prettiest dishes that I’ve seen.

I thought that the Saint Jacques ($49) – rosemary smoked trondheim bay scallops, reinette apple cider, boudin noir and burnet – was good, but my friend told me she had an even better one at another restaurant.

Still, it was quite a sight to behold, and there was a mini performance when the staff sent this to our table.

The star of the meal, without a doubt, is the Ravioli ($46) – organic hen egg, artichoke, melanosporum truffle and cantal. Chef Julien Royer brought the dish out, and he gave us a generous shaving of white truffles on the spot.

It was hands down the most delicious ravioli I’ve ever tasted.

The Atlantic Cod & Baby Squid ($82) – chanterelles, broad beans and smoked garlic emulsion – was equally splendid.

We couldn’t stop gushing about the food, and on top of that, the wine recommendations from the sommelier were spot on. No one that day could have eaten a better meal than us.

After our empty plates were taken away, we continued with desserts. The Choconuts ($28) – Jivara mousse, peanuts, Macadamia nut ice cream. The perfect ending for a perfect meal.

I was wrong. It wasn’t the ending, I’ve forgotten about petit four. Now we can live happily-ever-after.

It’s been a while since I’ve been surprised and won over by a meal. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been eating plenty of very well executed food but the problem with having a benchmark is that it’s getting increasingly difficult to wow me. But JAAN managed to do just that.

The presentation of the food is flawless. Chef Julien Royer and his team pay attention to every single detail and all the dishes are plated beautifully.

$200/pax (probably more because you are going to have wine) for a meal is not a small sum. I can’t afford to eat there all the time, but for a lavish meal like this, enjoyed with a amazing view of Singapore’s skyline – it was a fine way to splurge during a special occasion. JAAN is, without a doubt, one of the best restaurants in Singapore.

Customs House along the Marina Bay waterfront is one of the popular dining destinations in Singapore.

Five restaurants are housed in the converted heritage building beside The Fullerton Bay Hotel – Kinki, a funky Japanese restaurant; Sabai Fine Thai on the bay, a fine dining Thai restaurant; Nueva Cuba, a Cuban-themed restaurant and bar; Oyster Bar, a seafood bar serving oysters and champagne; and Procacci, a full-fledged Italian restaurant modelled after the style and taste of Florence.

The food at Procacci Italian restaurant is generally good, and while prices are fairly high, it is a lovely place for a romantic date.

The menu has a bit of everything, from appetisers like Calamari Fritti ($22) to Wagyu Beef Carpaccio ($25); to main courses like Mushroom Risotto ($35), Home Made Ravioli stuffed with Wagyu Beef ($35) and Black Angus Tenderloin ($49); and desserts like Italian Cheese Cake ($15) and Profiteroles ($15).

While the appetisers were tempting, I chose to skip it and go with two main courses. The Taglierini Al Granchio ($30) arrived first – it was decent, but definitely not the best crabmeat linguine that I’ve tasted.

After taking a glance at the menu, I immediately knew that I was going for the Black Angus Tenderloin ($49).

Served with mashed potato, the Black Angus Tenderloin which came with black truffle sauce was excellent. The dish managed to achieve the right balance: the steak was cooked to medium-rare perfection, the mashed potato had the right consistency, and the black truffle sauce complemented the meat nicely.

For desserts, I had a hard time trying to decide between the Panna Cotta ($15), Tiramisu ($15) and Molten Chocolate Lava Cake ($18). I went for the Molten Chocolate Lava Cake and I am happy to say it was satisfying. The cake was oozing with chocolate, and it came with a scoop of good vanilla ice cream.

While I liked Procacci Italian Restaurant at Customs House, the above-average prices meant that I probably wouldn’t suggest going there any-time soon unless my friends really want to give it a try. But if you have always wanted to eat there, the Italian restaurant is a nice place to go for a special occasion.

Il Lido Italian Dining at Sentosa Golf Club is a restaurant that has consistently been voted as one of the best restaurants in Singapore, and it is frequently praised for the quality of Italian food.

Compared to its sister restaurant, Forlino at One Fullerton, il lido Italian restaurant is slightly more casual – think of it as a semi fine dining restaurant that comes with everything you would expect from a top-notch restaurant.

With new Chef de cuisine Alessandro Delfanti taking over the helm in the kitchen, the italian restaurant has recently revamped its entire menu. It now focuses on mainly seasonal and native produce from Italy and Europe.

We entered the restaurant through a narrow walkway at the side of the Sentosa Golf Club entrance. The interior of the Italian restaurant has a dark and sexy tone, while the al fresco dining area comes with a nice sea-breeze, making it the perfect place to have a romantic dinner at night.

Like Forlino, Il Lido has thoughtfully provided beautiful stools for putting our bags. It is simple gestures as such that make a difference. We started off our meal with some bread, eagerly anticipating what the chef would come up with.

Eating is a lot more fun when you have someone who appreciates good food, loves having desserts first and has a huge appetite. My dining companion and I had two appetisers, one pasta, one risotto, two main courses and three desserts.

There are around 10 items on Il Lido’s antipasti menu and we had a hard time trying to decide on them as all of them seemed to be screaming “EAT ME”. Among them, I was attracted by the Pan-roasted Goose Liver with Figs, Vincotto Sauce and Rosemary Oil ($32), but then again, I always have, and always will love foie gras.

We were recommended the Venison Carpaccio with Roman Zucchini and Smoked Ricotta Cheese ($25). Instead of the typical beef carpaccio, Il Lido serves a Venison version and it was outstanding.

I would have ordered the classic Parma Ham with rock melon ($26), but we decided to try something different, so we had the Sea Scallops with Chanterelle Mushrooms and Blueberries ($28). Seared with tiny criss-crossing grilled marks on the surface, the scallops were meaty and very fresh. The use of blueberries gave the otherwise ordinary dish a refreshing twist and the accompany mushrooms were also very tasty.

Il Lido Italian restaurant has two types of risotto on the menu: Basil & Pecorino Cheese Risotto with Crispy Bacon ($35) and Baby Squid Risotto with Black Ink Sauce and Chili Peppers ($38). We had the latter, but I thought that it was only decent.

If I were with a larger group of people, I would have ordered the Tagliatelle with Rabbit & Marjoram Ragout ($38), but we only had two stomachs so we stuck with the Veal Agnolotti with Mushrooms and Truffle Cream ($38) – which came highly recommended.

We were told that the chef actually put a frozen veal juice cube within the ravioli to ensure the moistness and flavour. I’m sure I wouldn’t have been able to eat an entire bowl of ravioli on my own, so make sure you order this to share.

For main course, I wanted to get the Black Angus Beef Tenderloin ($58) but the manager suggested the Pan-roasted Cod with Smoked Caviar Sauce and Whipped Potatoes ($45), saying that it’s very good (although I’m quite positive that he thinks everything on the menu is good). I’m happy to say that it was excellent. The whipped potatoes, in particular, were quite interesting – you could taste the potato without the heaviness of it.

I don’t usually order chicken in a restaurant nowadays, but hey, this is a Guinea Fowl Supreme with Goose Liver and Apricot Sauce ($56) that we are talking about. It was slightly tougher than chicken, and the apricot sauce managed to bring out the flavour of the meat. However, I am not sure if I’d pay so much for a meat that has a flavour similar to chicken. The other meats on Il Lido’s menu like Suckling Pig Saddle ($58) and Wagyu Beef Cheek ($45) are more appealing to me.

That said, the Guinea fowl remains a rarity on menus in Singapore, and if you’ve never tried it before, this is a good place to start.

We were told that Il Lido’s tiramisu ($15) is probably not the best in Singapore, but we decided to go ahead and have it as my dining companion was craving for it. Only a foolish guy would stand between a girl and her craving. And true enough, the tiramisu was only decent.

Thankfully, the Molten Lava Chocolate Cake with Yogurt Ice cream ($18) was pretty good. The ubiquitous Chocolate lava cake was so pretty that I thought it would be a shame to dig a hole into it, but that feeling quickly passed and I poked it with a spoon. Molten chocolate oozed out, and slowly, it covered the entire top of the cake.

The pairing of the slightly yogurt ice cream with the chocolate cake was a good decision; the sourish yogurt cut through the sweetness of the chocolate, giving it a perfect balance.

Among the three desserts that we had, the Vanilla Crème Brûlée with Blueberries ($15) was our favourite. The inclusion of berries within the crème brûlée was a lovely surprise. Every few bites or so, you would hit a pocket of blueberries. Lovely.

In terms of the overall dining experience, Il Lido Italian restaurant at Sentosa Golf Club is easily one of the best restaurants in Singapore.

I don’t think they have the best Italian food in Singapore (my favourite is still Ristorante Da Valentino), but I do think that it is a great all-round restaurant, with the right combination of good food, ambience and service.

Regular readers know that I am a big fan of the Prive Group by restaurateur Yuan Oeij. After trying their new Josper Grill menu recently, I am convinced that Prive Restaurant at Keppel Bay is one of the best restaurants in Singapore.

The Josper grill is favoured by many well-known chefs around the world. The system has a greater heat control, and the dual function of oven and grill significantly reduces the cooking time of the meat.

There are 8 items on Prive’s Josper Grill menu, with options like seafood platter, kurobuta pork, lamb rack, ribeye and tenderloin. Naturally, prices are slightly steeper. The rack of kurobuta pork is available for $52, while the 280g Ribeye Cap is $75. The normal ala carte menu, on the other hand, is much more affordable. Prices range from $13-24 for appetisers; $24-35 for main courses; and $10-16 for desserts. Prive Restaurant also offers a 3 course set lunch during weekdays at $35.

Between the three of us, we shared 3 appetisers, 4 main course and a dessert platter. For appetisers, we started with the Grilled Watermelon Stack ($15). The sweet and juicy grilled watermelon was great, but I’m not sure if I’d pay $15 for it. I’m not a big fan of salad, but we had a pretty decent Apple, walnut & Brie Salad ($13). For me, the highlight from the appetiser menu was the Pan Seared Foie Gras ($24). Yummy goose liver with caramelised banana strudel, baby spinach and raisin brioche.

After having three appetisers and a glass of wine, we proceeded with the main courses.

To be honest, I thought that the Capellini with Sakura Ebi tasted like bee hoon – an atas $24 bee hoon. Having said that, it was done just right, and the sakura ebi added an additional dimension to a tasty plate of bee hoon.

We also had the Double Rib Lamb Rack ($58) which you see in the photo above. It was actually quite good, but I was preoccupied with the kurobuta pork and ribeye.

I was delighted to see the Rack of Kurobuta Pork ($52) on Prive’s Josper Grill menu. I love pork. The 280g corn-fed U.S Snake River Farm Kurobuta Pork (the first picture of this post) was gorgeous. I’d gladly give up a steak for this rack of kurobuta pork anytime.

“Our steak is better than CUT Steakhouse”. Yuan told us at the start of dinner.

Having heard raved reviews about the steaks at CUT Marina Bay Sands (my foodie friends boldly proclaimed that they have the best steaks in Singapore), I was a little sceptical initially.

My partner and I were left speechless when we had our first bite of the steak. It was SO GOOD – definitely one of the best steaks I’ve had. And you know what? I wouldn’t exchange this steak for any kurobuta pork.

There are four steak options on the Josper Grill menu: the premium Black Angus Tenderloin ($58), 340g Centre-cut Ribeye ($58), 280g Ribeye Cap ($75) and the humongous 450g Thick Cut Ribeye Steak ($90).

The Dessert Platter ($32) is a great way to end the meal on a sweet note. It offers 6 mini version of the ala carte desserts. Clockwise from top left: Lychee Granite, Valrhona Chocolate Mille Feuille, Cinnamon Apple Strudel, Lemon Meringue Tart, Ice Cream Profiteroles, and Sticky Date Pudding.

While you are paying fine dining prices for the experience at Prive Restaurant, the food is hardly so. It is unpretentious and uncomplicated. Prive is definitely in my list of must-go restaurants in Singapore.

When it comes to Sunday Brunch, there’s nothing better than the Pink Champagne Brunch Buffet at Equinox Restaurant. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that this is definitely one of the best brunch in Singapore.

On the last Sunday of each month, the fine dining restaurant at Swissotel the Stamford has a special Pink Champagne Brunch.

From free flow of Moet & Chandon Rose Brut and pink cocktails, to pink chocolate fountain and staff dressed in hot pink, the Pink Themed Brunch will most definitely lift your mood. Trust me, it almost feels like heaven when you are sipping champagne on the 70th level.

Anyone who has been to Equinox knows how beautiful it is. At 70th level of the Equinox Complex, it is one of the restaurants with the best view in Singapore.

I have a love-hate relationship with buffet as I tend to overeat. But it is impossible to say no to a luxurious Sunday brunch. There is an appetiser section where you can start with parma ham & rock melon, as well as an assortment of salads.

There is also a corner with shooters like cured smoked duck and chilled gazpacho.

Moving on, the Salmon showcase will definitely wow you with the varieties of gravlax, cured, smoked salmon tartar and salmon rillette. But I was distracted by the Seafood Counter on the rather magnificent ice sculpture.

All you can eat seafood: tiger prawns, mud crabs, green lip mussels, fine de clair oysters, white pearl oysters, gillardeau oysters, and slipper lobsters.

The Japanese Station is conveniently located beside the seafood area. With Sashimi (Kingfish, Tasmanian Salmon, Yellowfin Tuna, Japanese Scallops, Surf Clam and Octopus) and a selection of Sushi and Maki to choose from, it felt like a mini Japanese buffet.

Oh my god. There goes my diet plan.

Carnivore alert! The Carving & Live station offers roasted USDA beef rib eye (too dry), roasted turkey (it’s Christmas already?) and leg of lamb (excellent).

The highlight of the dessert buffet was definitely the pink chocolate fountain. The nitrogen sorbet that came with the crepes, was equally impressive.

Opera cake, raspberry chocolate gateau, maple tree financier, panna cotta, macaron, cream brulee — how did desserts steal all the lovely words?

Looking for a birthday venue to throw a pink themed party? Equinox Restaurant is definitely the perfect place!

The $148++ Pink Brunch is not cheap, but I think it is worth splurging for that special occasion. Besides the fantastic view of Singapore’s skyline and waterfront, there’s also free flow of champagne with lots of yummy food. The Pink Brunch at Equinox is very popular, please make a reservation before going.

Eating is a national hobby in Singapore. It goes without saying that we have many fantastic restaurants. When it comes to eating out, I have two preferred kinds of restaurants. The first is just about food. Service and ambience are not important so long they give me good food.

And of course, the other is all about the ambience. Everyone should spoil themselves a little by celebrating a special occasion in a romantic restaurant. You know, the kind of place where you can bring your partner for a nice date, and have a wonderful dining experience. Luckily for us, there are many romantic restaurants in Singapore with good ambience and view.

Here’s a list of Singapore’s top restaurants with the best romantic views:

Let’s dine with a view!

1-Altitude

With 360-degree sky dining view, the latest creation of the 1 Rochester Group, 1-Altitude is definitely a strong contender for the restaurant with the best view in Singapore. Looking for a place to party after work? Check out the world’s tallest al fresco rooftop bar 1-Altitude.

Equinox Restaurant

Be it the Weekday Semi Buffet Lunch ($59++), Sunday Brunch Buffet ($128++), Pink Brunch Buffet ($148++) on every last Sunday of the month, or afternoon high tea international buffet ($43++), Equinox, the highest restaurant in Singapore, is the perfect place for any special occasion. I’m in love with the restaurant.

Mandarin Court Chinese Restaurant (formerly known as Pine Court Chinese Restaurant) has undergone a revamp, with Chef Sunny Kong taking over the helm of the kitchen.

Nestled at the top of Mandarin Orchard Singapore (previously Meritus Mandarin) on the 35th level, the Chinese restaurant has a good view of the town area. It is currently one of my new favourite dim sum places in Singapore.

The weekday ala carte dim sum menu has over 20 items, with average prices between $5 to $5.7 per basket. Stand-out dishes include Steamed Pumpkin Dumpling, Crisp-fried Thousand Filo, Steamed Shark’s Fin dumpling, and Chinese Pancake with Bacon & Pork Floss. Since it was our first time to Mandarin Court Chinese Restaurant, we proceeded to order the popular (but safe) choices.

The Baked Barbecued Pork Pie ($5.7) was quite different from the ones that I’ve had before, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Anyway, they were not out-of-this-world good, but they were tasty, and that was enough.

At $12 for a basket of four, Mandarin Court’s custard buns are not cheap. I was quite hesitant to pay $3 for a bun, but the waitress convinced me that they are well worth the price.

Looks-wise, I’m very sure that this basket of custard bun would win any dim sum pageant. Taste-wise, I thought that it would be perfect if it had a stronger salted egg yolk flavour.

I thought that the Steamed Crystal Prawn Dumplings ($5.7) were average; the translucent skin was slightly torn before we had it.

Given that most places charge around $5-6 for Steamed Cheong Fun, I thought that Mandarin Court Restaurant’s rendition was overpriced at $8. The rice rolls were slightly too thick, and I would probably skip it next time.

Also on Mandarin Court’s dim sum menu, the Steamed Barbecued Pork Bun ($5.70) – sweet savoury char siew fillings within fluffy buns; Steamed Shanghainese Pork Dumpling ($5.70) – piping hot dumplings that were perfect with shredded ginger and Chinese black vinegar; and Steamed Siew Mai (5.70) – the ever reliable dim sum topped with pretty fish roe.

For those of you who want to indulge in a feast, Mandarin Court Chinese Restaurant has a new Weekend Dim Sum Brunch Buffet which comes with 120 items, at $68++/pax.

I feel that Mandarin Court Chinese Restaurant is one of the most underrated restaurants in Singapore. I’d definitely recommend coming here if you are looking for a restaurant in Orchard Road to have lunch.

* The Palm Beach Seafood Giveaway is now closed. The winners are Daniel (29), Chloe (18), HahazZ (57), Vivian (37). Thank you for participating, better luck next time! *

“My all time favorite is chili crab with deep-fried mantou, what’s yours?” I asked on twitter.

Everyone replied enthusiastically, the popular choices are pepper crab, chili crab, crab bee hoon, salted egg yoke crab and butter crab. Even though I just had chili crab and double baked cheese crab at Palm Beach Seafood recently, I find myself craving for the thick, sweet-and-spicy gravy of the chili crab, with deep fried mantou of course.

While we are at the topic of crab, I realize people like to debate on which restaurant has the best crab in Singapore. Like what I always say: whichever place you like – has the best crab!

HOW TO ENTER THE PALM BEACH SEAFOOD CRAB GIVEAWAY

I totally understand how it feels to be on your end, looking at all the photos and yet cannot get to taste the food; so I’m happy to announce that Palm Beach Seafood has kindly agreed to giveaway $50 vouchers (no minimum spending required) to 4 lucky readers. If you want a chance to win, here is what to do:

1. Leave a comment on this post

Tell us what’s your favorite crab and why. I’m asking for your favorite style of cooking for the crab, it does not have to be from a particular restaurant. Just tell me what style do you like, and if you happen to like an exotic way of cooking crabs which can be anything for example, Double Baked Cheese Crab, let us know! (***updated***)

And ONE entry per person, you are encouraged to get your friends to join the contest but please play fair and do not post multiple comments under different names.

2. Use a valid & contactable email

Please use a valid & contactable email when you post the comment. I will email the winners shortly after the contest ended, remember to check your email on Monday.

3. And the Four lucky Winners . . .

The four lucky winners will be decided by a highly sophisticated method, and I reserve the right to re-pick if there’s any discrepancy or foul-play involved. I know there are folks from the States, Malaysia, Australia, and other countries reading my blog, but unfortunately this contest is only open to those currently residing in Singapore. But all of you are welcome to share your thoughts too!

The closing date for this giveaway is Sunday 28th of Feb 2359 hrs, and so you have exactly forty eight hours before it ends.

I hope you enjoy the little gift I have for everyone!

Updated: Read my list of Valentine’s Day Restaurant: 2011 Edition for more choices, and my guide to Valentine’s Day Gifts: Food Edition.

Saint Valentine’s is a strange little thing, it comes and leaves in a hurry, but memories will always stay behind. Even though it is a day where retailers, florists and restaurateurs rejoice – I believe in Valentine’s day. The idea behind it (less the commercialise plots), is very sacred; Valentine’s is all about you and me.

Have you decided on a romantic restaurant for your Valentine’s Day Dinner?

Everyday is Valentine’s, so long we are happy together. Yes that’s true, but Valentine’s is the only day that you can walk around with big bouquet of roses without having the whole world staring at you. This is the day where you have the perfect excuse to splurge on an expensive meal without feeling guilty. This is the day where you can justify spending a bomb to get the Tiffany blue box or that Gucci wallet without any nagging feelings. This is Valentine’s day.

Many people always have problems finding a nice restaurant for Valentine’s day. The guys will have a headache on where to bring their girlfriend, wife, and mistress, while the ladies will dream of where their man will bring them to, or in a slightly unfortunate twist, planning for their ideal Valentine’s day venue.

I’m no male chauvinist, but I firmly believe that a guy should plan the surprise, and search for a suitable Valentine’s day restaurant to bring their other half, well at least for Valentine’s day.

Here is a list of romantic restaurants in Singapore to celebrate Valentine’s Day:
