Crispy, golden and greasy — fried chicken is quite simply, magical. Taking a bite into a crackling, juicy drumstick after a long tiring day is the culinary equivalent of taking a shower on a sweltering afternoon. The best part about having fried chicken at home? You can eat as messily as you want without worrying about looking like a caveman in public.

If you’ve never had galbi-jjim before, you’re missing out. This Korean dish sees fall-off-the-bone beef short ribs braised in a rich, savoury sauce. Pairing perfectly with a bowl of steamed rice, this homely dish makes for a wholesome, fuss-free dinner.

And don’t worry, having this as a takeaway will only enhance its flavour as the meat sits longer in the delicious gravy.
Since opening their doors to the public in 2013, Jem has become one of the go-to shopping malls in the West of Singapore.

Directly connected to Jurong East MRT interchange, and home to over 240 retail and F&B outlets across six levels, Jem is an all-in-one destination that offers you everything.

There was a major revamp at Jem’s B1 food mall since March 2019 and they have since reopened with more exciting food offerings.

Whether you’re craving a cup of bubble tea, Taiwanese fried chicken, or in the mood for a legit Korean BBQ meal, here is our Jem food guide featuring 11 dining destinations in the mall.

NIPONG NAEPONG

Nipong Naepong has been satisfying the cravings of numerous Korean food enthusiasts with their take on Chinese-Korean cuisine. Known as Singapore’s first “ppong” specialty restaurant, Nipong Naepong has seamlessly fused globally inspired flavours into delicious bowls of jjamppong.

Jjamppong is a Korean noodle dish that is typically served with either spicy meat or seafood.

Those unfamiliar with the dish should start off with the top-selling Cha Ppong (S$15.80), which is touted as the traditional and original form of jjamppong that consists of a flavourful broth, jjolmyeon (Korean wheat noodles), and ingredients such as mussels, squid, prawn and quail eggs. The dish comes with the ability to choose between Level 1 and Level 2 for the spiciness of your Cha Ppong.

Other notable dishes to consider include the Spicy Keu Risotto (S$16.90) that is cooked using the restaurant’s own Keu cream sauce with assorted seafood, spinach and chili oil; the Vongole Ppong (S$17.90) with briny clams, white wine and fragrant garlic; the Tom Yum Ppong (S$15.90) with assorted seafood and the house jjolmyeon, and the Sweet Potato pizza (S$17.90), that comes with a baked tortilla base that’s topped with sweet potato puree and fluffy whipped cream.

MONGA

Founded by Taiwanese celebrity and comedian Nono, the much-anticipated Monga has finally opened its first-ever local outlet in Jem, serving up thick, fresh and juicy fried chicken cutlets!

With over 45 outlets in Taiwan, Monga’s fried chicken delivers on taste through their usage of gigantic slabs of fried chicken cutlets which are coated with interesting seasoning powder. The flavours offered in Singapore are namely The King (salt and pepper), the mildly spicy Hot Chick (chili paprika) and The Taiker (Okinawa seaweed powder) – each sold at S$6.90.

Unlike most traditional Taiwanese fried chicken, Monga uses chicken filet cutlets which are at least a minimum of 2cm thick for the retention of the meat’s juices even after it is deep-fried. In place of the typical sugar marination, Monga uses honey to marinate their chicken, which helps to tenderize the meat before it’s coated with buttermilk batter and double-fried with minimum grease.

Monga also offers three impressive tasting drinks which are the refreshing Orange Green Tea (S$4.50), Grapefruit Green Tea (S$4.50), and the fragrant Osmanthus Oolong Tea (S$3.30), to help quench your thirst after your satisfactory fried chicken snack!

In addition to the main bowls of noodle, you can also complete your meal with a side dish to share. A popular dish that would come highly recommended is the Pork Wanton in Chilli Vinaigrette (S$6.50 for 5pcs), which packs a flavourful punch.
