Singapore is finally in Phase 2, and this means that we are given a little more freedom to go out and about. While the pandemic situation across the globe doesn’t seem to be getting better anytime soon, Phase 2 in Singapore is definitely a step closer towards normalcy.

If you’ve been indoors for too long and are stumped on what you can or cannot do in Phase 2 in Singapore, here are 8 activities that we are allowed to partake in. Do remember to practise safe distancing and good hygiene habits while you have fun with your loved ones; we don’t want to find ourselves back in another Circuit Breaker.

APPRECIATE ART AT THE ARTSCIENCE MUSEUM 

Art enthusiasts who have been surviving on online virtual tours of museums and attractions during this period will be glad to know that museums will be open in Phase 2. One of these museums is the futuristic Artscience Museum near Marina Bay Sands Singapore. A plus point that comes along with the reopening of museums in Singapore is that crowds will be relatively smaller due to safe distancing measures.

READ A BOOK AT THE LIBRARY

If you’re a book nerd or someone who enjoys the peace and quiet of libraries, you must have been devasted to know that libraries were not accessible to the public for quite some time. Libraries in Singapore are finally reopening in Phase 2 so we can head there for some alone time and a good book.

SOAK UP THE SUN AT THE BEACH 

It’s time to get a good dosage of vitamin D to make up for all the time you spent stuck at home. Head over to one of Singapore’s many beaches to frolic in the sand & sea, get a good tan and just laze around. Who knew that we would one day miss the sun so much!

Some beaches you can visit in Singapore’s Phase 2 include Palawan Beach, Siloso Beach and East Coast Park. You can also have a mini getaway and go island hopping at some of the few islands that surround Singapore.

WORK YOUR LEGS AND DO A WALKING TRAIL 

Stretch those stiff legs and take a nice long walk at one of Singapore’s many walking trails such as Imbiah Trails, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Southern Ridges. It’s a wholesome activity to do in Phase 2 with your partner and friends after being apart for so long!

HAVE A PICNIC AT THE PARK 

Everyone is all excited about dining out in Singapore and we can expect some pretty long queues for our favourite eateries. To skip the crowds, why not have a picnic at a park instead? Places like The Botanic Gardens, MacRitchie Reservoir and Chinese Garden are open again in Phase 2 in Singapore so you can prepare a sumptuous feast with your loved ones for a fun picnic session.

GO MURAL HOPPING 

If you don’t fancy the usual attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore and Singapore Zoo, an alternative activity you can try out is mural hopping. Singapore is home to a number of beautiful murals, with the more popular ones being by Yip Yew Chong. Embark on a wall crawl and discover hidden pieces of art that will let you rediscover Singapore from a different perspective in Phase 2.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH FLORA AND FAUNA AT THE FLOWER DOME IN GARDENS BY THE BAY 

Nature loves who are afraid of Singapore’s unforgiving heat can find solace in The Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay Singapore. The famous air-conditioned glass greenhouse houses a myriad of gorgeous plants and flowers for you to admire and take photos with.

Covid-19 has ruined pretty much all of our plans for 2020 as well as affected our daily lives for the worse. From cancelled overseas trips to plenty of restrictions, the pandemic has been a wet blanket and the worst way to start another decade.

However, it hasn’t completely put a permanent halt on some of the activities that we have been looking forward to. A number of events in Singapore that were scheduled to happen across 2020 have bounced back innovatively with online versions of what they had originally prepared. While it definitely won’t feel the same as physically being there, for now, it’s better than nothing.

The party doesn’t have to stop even though you can’t head out to a club! CÉ LA VI Singapore will be bringing the clubbing experience to you at home so you can still let loose and unwind while bopping to some sick beats from your bedroom. Recent DJs they’ve hosted include the renowned Fabio Neural, and they’ve even held fundraising live streams for the Italian Red Cross. You can be sure that there will be more great music to come until you can physically visit the club again.

NATIONAL DAY PARADE 2020

This year’s National Day will definitely be vastly different from what we are used to. The parade will mostly be focusing on allowing Singaporeans to celebrate our Nation’s birthday online at home instead of the usual locations like the floating platform at Marina Bay.

The theme for 2020 is ‘Together, A Stronger Singapore’. The bulk of the parade segments will be moved to heartland areas and streamed on both television and internet platforms. Traditional performances such as the Red Lions free-fall jump, state flag fly-past and mobile column will take place in various locations across our little red dot. An evening show will also be held at The Star Performing Arts Centre in Buona Vista where they will feature films and performances by Singaporeans. Of course, everything will end off with a breathtaking fireworks display across multiple sites.

While it definitely won’t feel the same as any other parade we’ve attended, we are glad that we are still able to celebrate Singapore’s birthday despite what is going on in the world. It is crucial for us to remember that at the end of the day, the only way we can overcome this adversity is to stick together as a country.

MARQUEE ONE LIVE

Another club that has moved to the online sphere is Marquee Singapore. During this period, they will be live streaming virtual parties that you can partake in at home. PINK DOT

STAR WARS VIRTUAL RUN 

Never would we have ever imagined that marathons and runs will go virtual, but 2020 has proven to us once again that such unfathomable things can actually be made possible.

This year’s annual Star Wars Run goes online for the very first time and from 15 June 2020 to 30 September 2020, you can partake in this legendary run at your nearest neighbourhood park or from your treadmill. Participants can choose between the Light Side & Dark Side and clock the distances they’ve run. Once completed, you’ll receive a commemorative Finisher Trophy. 40-kilometre runners will also be able to get a limited edition 40th-anniversary gold Darth Vader trophy. WAN QING DUMPLING FESTIVAL 

Explore ancient Chinese myths and practices during Wan Qing Dumpling Festival’s very first digital edition. Also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, the dumpling festival is celebrated by Chinese communities around the world. This year, you can do so while you stay home with a line-up of family-friendly online activities such as cooking classes, quizzes, interactive craft demonstrations and contests that will be available on their Facebook page.

From learning how to make bak zhang to watching animated storytelling sessions about rice dumplings, there is something for the whole family!

Did you know that Haw Par Villa’s name derives from the Burmese-Chinese Aw brothers’ personal names?

Boon Haw means “gentle tiger”, while Boon Par means “gentle leopard”. The Aw brothers were behind the renowned household brand Tiger Balm, and Boon Haw had created Haw Par Villa as a gift to Boon Par in 1937.

Haw Par Villa holds a piece of Singapore’s treasured past with a thousand statues and dioramas telling the tales of Chinese folklore, mythology, legends and history. It is hard to imagine that the theme park was a major local attraction during its peak in the 1970s and 1980s; particularly when Jewel Changi Airport just opened earlier this year.

Both of the attractions were created to draw in the masses. However, the stark contrast in the values of the different generations between the traditional cultural heritage site and Singapore’s latest dazzling crown jewel could not be more obvious. 

As we walked around the park, it was interesting to rediscover Chinese history and the mystical legends that our forefathers conveyed to us with wonder in their eyes. This was, after all, Boon Haw’s intention in creating the park; to teach and pass on traditional Chinese values and virtues to the following generations.

With recent efforts of revitalising the park, Haw Par Villa was closed for three months from December to February for repairs.

Several of the statues and dioramas have since received a fresh coat of paint and additional lighting improvements. The park’s operating hours have also been extended to 10pm, and entry is free. All of this is done in a bid to attract more visitors to the park in order to appeal to a new generation of tourists.

In addition, the park’s operators, Journeys, has also announced that they are working with event organisers to schedule more regular events at Haw Par Villa.

Visitors could take the daily day tour to learn more about the mystical stories behind the park’s landscape. If you’re feeling more adventurous, join the park’s weekly Twilight Tour, Journeys to Hell. The Twilight Tour takes place every Friday night from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, and you’ll even get a sneak peek at the upcoming Hell’s Museum.

The most popular attraction at the park, as most Singaporeans know, is the Ten Courts of Hell. Originating from traditional Chinese mythology, the Ten Courts of Hell depicts afterlife through exhibits that are not unlike those imagined in horrible nightmares.

Each court represents a crime that is punishable through gory means; an example of this would be the Ninth Court of Hell where one’s arms and head are chopped off by a demon due to improper conduct.

A familiar Chinese folklore and legend to many of the Chinese community in Singapore would be Journey to the West.

This classic tale in Chinese literature takes up a substantial space in the theme park, telling the story of the four main characters – Monk Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing – embarking on a journey towards the ultimate form of morality in enlightenment.

The park also presents Confucius values and virtues along with the belief of reincarnation, perhaps into an animal or human in the next life. Whether or not you are spiritually rooted, a visit to Haw Par Villa will spark an interesting debate amongst your companions on morality, beliefs in the afterlife and the topic of mythological creatures.

Our group departed Haw Par Villa with a newfound appreciation for the park’s effort in maintaining what remains of our cultural heritage in Singapore.

With signs to tell a comprehensive story behind most of the exhibits in the park, we re-educated ourselves on Chinese history, mythology and virtues. We also left realising that it was important that we grounded ourselves more in the roots of our cultural heritage and pass on its legacy.

You can purchase tickets (S$18) there for a round trip from the pier to St John’s/Lazarus Island, then to Kusu Island and back to Marina South Pier. Remember to check the ferry schedule so you can plan your trip accordingly!

Your first stop, St John’s Island, is about a 15-20 minute ferry ride away, so just sit tight and maybe take a power nap before you disembark!

ST JOHN’S ISLAND

When you arrive at St. John’s Island, you’ll be greeted by a vast expanse of beach-land and shaded pavilions hidden amongst the tall trees. It’s the perfect place to enjoy refreshing waves of the ocean, basking in the warm sun.

As you stroll along the beach, keep an eye out for some trinkets you can bring home – seashells and crab claws. We were lucky enough to find a whole crab shell with its claws still intact!

Other than beaches, surround yourself in the abundance of greenery St John’s Island has to offer. They provide much-needed shade when the sun gets too harsh. It really reminds us that it’s fine to immerse ourselves in nature for a few moments without a care in the world.

LAZARUS ISLAND

To get to Lazarus Island, all you need to do is cross a bridge once you turn left from the Ferry Terminal at St John’s Island! The link-bridge is surrounded by azure waters and plenty of places to snap a nice photo. Since it’s so quiet, the entire road on the link bridge is a picture-perfect scene for you to enjoy as well!

If you fancy a swim and somewhere to lie down and take a nap under the sun, Lazarus Island’s white sandy beaches might be right up your alley. Though the beaches are relatively smaller than those of Sentosa and Bali, the aquamarine-coloured waters are still ever-so enticing.

The sandy beaches are also a popular spot for picnics! Cook up some simple pasta salad, bring a loaf of bread and your preferred toppings, some chips and some drinks and you’re all set for a hearty meal with your friends or family!

For those who love cats and furry creatures, if you’re lucky, you may spot some island cats. They’re super friendly and seem quite used to affection from humans!

KUSU ISLAND

The last stop for the day is Kusu Island. “Kusu” means Turtle or Tortoise in Hokkien, and that’s exactly what you’ll find at the island’s temple. Tortoises are said to live extremely long lives and are extremely important to the island.

Pray at the temple located just behind the Chinese pavilions and bridges. The temple is dedicated to the God of Prosperity and the Goddess of Mercy. It is a serene and picturesque scene that highlights the importance of Chinese culture in today’s modern world that is otherwise much forgotten and overlooked.

You can also make a wish on the wishing tree there! It is believed that tying a yellow cloth around the tree grants wealth, good marriage, health and harmony! If a wish comes true, believers come back and offer thanks, occasionally untying the cloths they have bound around the tree.

While taking the ferry back to the mainland, it’s as if you’re being transported back to reality from a day-long dream you’ve just enjoyed. Let’s be thankful for the presence of such getaway spots in Singapore, reminding us that there’s more to life than just the typical rat-race.

After a long and hot day out in the farm, head over to Poison Ivy Bistro. Opened in 2005, the bistro features farm-to-table local and fusion dishes and provides air conditioning; a welcoming escape from the scorching heat outside.

A popular hangout amongst locals, we were not surprised to see the place filled with regulars on a weekday for lunchtime.

The Nasi Lemak Platter (S$12) was served to us with generous portions that enticed our senses the moment it reached our table. The fragrant rice stood out to us instantly, being beautifully coloured in a blue that is naturally derived from organic blue pea flowers.

We enjoyed pairing the sayur lodeh with the rice as it made for an aromatic combination due to the presence of coconut in both.

The Warrior’s Thali (S$14) is for those looking for something even heartier and more wholesome with the plethora of side dishes that it is served with.

Dig into the Warrior’s Fish, which is a dish of battered deep-fried fish with a tangy sweet and sour sauce. Lightly battered and non-greasy, the moringa tempura was a delight to munch on with the fresh and crisp earthy taste.

We also had the Chicken Curry (S$12) which was served with a side of oven-baked prata.

An unconventional method of preparing prata, the flatbread was crispier and flakier which complemented the chicken curry nicely.

Shrouded amongst the sleek concretes buildings and smooth cemented roads is a beautiful cluster of old and rustic houses that make up Singapore’s very last kampong.

While most of Singapore’s kampongs have given way to tall HDB flats, chic condominiums and massive shopping malls, Kampong Lorong Buangkok remains untouched by time and this little plot of land is a reminder of Singapore’s golden yesteryears.

One foot in and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a completely different country; low-rise single storey houses, old dirt roads and exposed telephone wires are surrounded by thick, lush greenery. If you’re up for a nostalgic experience, this is the perfect place to head to.

The land was originally a swamp that was later on bought over in 1956 by a traditional medicine seller, Sng Teow Koon. The land was then rented out to Malay and Chinese families to build their houses. At one point, around 40 families lived in the kampong, but as times changed and more people moved out, only about 30 families continue to reside in the premises. 

We love how everything here is much more relaxed and slow-paced as compared to the hectic hustle and bustle of the city.

There is only one main entrance to the kampong along a long, bumpy road. Look out for the sign that neatly spells out ‘Kg. Lorong Buangkok’ and you’ll know that you’re at the right place.

The one-storey houses here have evidently stood the test of time. Made of wood with zinc roofs, many of them were a little run down but yet at the same time, you have to remember that the houses here are least half a century old so that is inevitable. 

Instead of proper cement walkways, there were plenty of long, winding dirt paths connecting the various houses.

You may even chance upon a furry friend or two!

You also get to see the people who live here go about their daily activities. While walking in, we saw a sweet old lady coming back after doing her grocery shopping and we also saw a man doing some carpentry in the backyard of his home.

We love how the entire place is surrounded by such lush greenery; the beauty of Mother Nature!

We also realised that here, the electrical wires remained exposed, unlike the rest of Singapore.

All in all, it was certainly a humbling and memorable experience that we are sure to remember for a lifetime. Amongst Singapore’s fast-past city life which focuses on economic growth and keeping up with the times, it’s crucial for us to remember our past to remind ourselves of how far Singapore has come from our kampong days.

Our latest mission to up your Instagram game brought us to the Joo Chiat neighbourhood where we uncovered colourful shophouses, a vertical playground, creative murals, and architecture.

Nailing an Instagram-worthy photo can be a tricky thing but always keep an eye out for even the most unlikely of places. Remember, don’t just do this for the gram. Have fun and explore all the ways you can frame your shots because that creative challenge is a huge reason why avid photographers can keep revisiting the same ol’ place.

Find your own ways up the ante but here’s our guide to how you can start!

JOO CHIAT COMPLEX

The first thing we did was explore the Joo Chiat Complex right opposite Geylang Serai Market and Food Centre.

In an open area surrounded by outdoor retail shops and FairPrice are long panels in varying shades of green. Get in a full body portrait shot of that to capture the concept.

Another image you’d want to try is with the slanting link bridges between the complex and the carpark.

If you can get in a wider shot you’ll catch its interesting angles.

We explored deeper into the housing estate area and found a quiet resting spot with plenty of vines growing behind wooden chairs. It might be experimental but you could try framing this spot with leaves.

MURALS

If you prefer an artsy backdrop for your #ootd, most of us know about Haji Lane and Joo Chiat, so rake in the likes with a couple of these murals.

If you want to blend in with the picture, maybe try a walking shot or even get a gif of you touching the cattle.

A playful splash of art we found deeper in the residential area along Everitt Road was the Jousting Painters mural.

Pull our your brolly right here to add some humour.

VERTICAL PLAYGROUND

You have to find this blue three-storey vertical structure in Carpmael Park and indulge the kid in you. This urban pay structure is a “Wallholla” playground with ribbon-like platforms that look like they’re floating within a metal cage.

Climb through all its ins-and-outs while taking all kinds of crazy shots you need to fill your Instagram feed.

SHOPHOUSES

The Joo Chiat district is defined by its pre-war architecture and much of its charm from back when it was still a Peranakan enclave still remains. Play with the colours of its rows of two-storey shophouses and terrace houses that have been injected with some modernity from fresh tenants.

Take pictures with ornate facades that bear reliefs and motifs.

Or pose with those that exude minimalist vintage vibes.

Get your cameras ready for whimsical pop of colours that accentuate the traditional architectural style too.

WALKWAYS

As you navigate yourself through the cobweb of narrow lanes and five-foot ways, you’ll easily come by collapsible grilles that are a nostalgic throwback to our grandparents’ youth.

To us, there are no fixed must-or-don’t methods to get That Instagrammable Shot because, to quote Ansel Adams, there are no rules for good photographs. Besides, “you don’t take a photograph, you make it.” Have fun.

Shrouded amongst the glitz and glamour of Resorts World Sentosa and clean beaches is a historical gem that has been preserved since the late 19th century.

Tucked away at the westernmost end of Sentosa is Fort Siloso, Singapore’s last remaining coastal fort. Its strategic position allowed soldiers during the war to have clear views of the waters and the surrounding area so that they could shoot down anything that was a threat.

Stepping into Fort Siloso is like taking a leap back in time; a time when life was much harder and peril-filled the streets of Singapore. By delving into Singapore’s rich history, we are reminded of the dark times that our forefathers endured. We also can understand how far Singapore has come since then and most importantly, we can learn to appreciate the safe and clean environment that we enjoy now.

GET A BIRD’S-EYE VIEW FROM FROM THE FORT SILOSO SKYWALK 

In recent years, the Fort Siloso Skywalk was also built to allow visitors to have a better self-guided experience around the area. Standing at 11-storeys high, the Skywalk presents panoramic views of the western part of Sentosa.

It’s the perfect place to admire Sentosa’s surrounding scenery as well as to take some amazing photos for the gram!

MARVEL AT THE PRESERVED GUNS AND MACHINERY

What we love about Fort Siloso is their collection of preserved guns and machinery from World War II.

It is pretty fascinating to see all these massive weapons that were used for war and it also shows how far technological advancements have come since then.

LEARN MORE ABOUT SINGAPORE’S RICH HISTORY 

There are six interactive zones that serve to educate visitors on events that took place during the war as well as post and pre-war moments. There are also exhibits that tell the tales of people who lived through the Japanese Occupation to allow visitors to better understand what it personally felt like going through the war.

A lot of effort had evidently been put into making the displays as realistic as possible. For instance, there were some eerily realistic wax figures of soldiers reenacting scenes from the war period.

Old and preserved structures of the fort remain and transport one back in time. It is truly quite an experience to walk the grounds that the people from the war walked on.

FINGER FOOD THAT’S TOO GOOD TO SHARE

One thing that we really love about Oriole Coffee + Bar is how they have a number of dishes that are great for sharing. That definitely includes their extensive range of finger foods that go incredibly well with a pint of ice cold beer!

Whether you’re looking for a fried-chicken-with-beer combo or just wanting one of Oriole’s signature light bites, Har Cheong Gai (S$16++) would be your best bet. Shrimp-paste marinated chicken wings are fried to a lovely golden-brown crisp and served with a saucer of sambal belacan that is very mildly spicy.

A staple finger food that can hardly go wrong is Truffle Fries (S$14++). Liberally sprinkled with salt, truffle oil and shaved parmesan cheese, it’s one addictive bowl of crispy shoestring fries that you’re going to have to share as much as you might hate to.

Aside from finger food, Oriole Coffee + Bar’s extensive menu has a plethora of other scrumptious dishes that are great for sharing among friends. With mouthwatering options such as Philly Cheese Tenderloin Sandwich (S$22++), Cubano Meatwich (S$18++) and Triple Cheese Pizza (S$18++), you will definitely be left spoilt for choice.

HEARTY MAINS

If you can’t make up your mind, we recommend getting the Pumpkin & Feta Cheese Pizza (S$20++) which features an assortment of delicious and fresh-tasting meatless toppings such as roasted pumpkin, arugula, feta cheese, tomatoes and caramelised onion that are scattered generously atop a hand-pulled dough base that has been stretched to delicate perfection.

For something that best encompasses sweet, savoury, soft and crunchy, you can opt to have their Chicken & Waffle (S$18++). The freshly made waffle is slathered with a savoury bacon jam and arranged neatly atop, is a massive slab of crispy fried chicken as well as a fried egg. The dish comes with a side of crème Fraiche which adds a subtle tartness and creamy indulgence when eaten together with the chicken and waffle.

The Oriole Truffle Burger (S$22++), which comes with a side of fries, has a mild truffle fragrance that immediately hits you as you take your first bite. Sandwiched between fluffy brioche buns is a stack of juicy grilled grain-fed beef patty, sautéed mushrooms, caramelised onions, melted cheese, truffle aioli, and tossed greens. Although the beef patty could have had a stronger meaty flavour, the rest of the ingredients made up for it.

If you prefer something from the ocean you can always opt for the Fish Tacos (S$22++) which are essentially battered red snapper fillets and red cabbage slaw encased in a lightly toasted taco shell. The fork-tender red snapper was encrusted in a crisp, golden brown exterior that let out a satisfying crunch when we bit into it.

For heavier meats, St. Louis Pork Ribs (S$30++) is a half-slab serving of BBQ ribs with sweet potato fries and crunchy purple cabbage slaw. The pork was tender soft and we easily pulled it off the bone. The coat of sticky kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce) wasn’t too sweet and didn’t overwhelm the pork. The saucer of chilli relish it came with was a tad citrusy, lifting the heavy flavours of the ribs.

END YOUR MEAL ON A SWEET NOTE

We sang nothing but praises for their ambrosial Sticky Date Pudding (S$12++) which was the perfect way to balance out the savouriness of the other dishes. The dense pudding that lay in a pool of saccharine toffee sauce was served warm and in contrast, it was finished off with a dollop of ice cold ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery®.

This ambrosial dessert sees a dense pudding sponge, placed in the middle of a plate and surrounding it is a moat of warm, velvety toffee sauce. Indulgent, and we dare say, sinful, this dessert is finished with a huge scoop of fresh vanilla ice cream over top. The ice cream sparks a lovely contrast with the warm pudding and toffee sauce, giving you an interesting burst of sensations and flavours with each spoonful. We highly suggest that you start on the dessert once it hits the table as the warmth from the pudding makes the ice cream melt fast.

BUTTERBEER  – SAIKO BUTTER BREW (BOOTH 125)

Fancy something ice-cold to cool yourself off with? Then you should definitely get yourself a Butter Beer (S$5) from Saiko Butter Brew. Made to taste, look and feel like beer without actually containing any alcohol, the froth at the top is actually made using a butterscotch foam that is both creamy, luscious and well, buttery.

MALA POPCORN CHICKEN – SHACKMIE (BOOTH 75)

Festival grub comes in all shapes and sizes nowadays. Many of them stem from different cuisine and the one that has recently gained quite a following for its sheer versatility is fried chicken.

Over at Shackmie, be sure to try their signature Mala Popcorn Chicken (S$4) that comes coated generously with their own blend of mala powder. Punchy, numbing (just the way we like it) and tasty, this is something that we can imagine ourselves going back for.

SATAY, PUFFS AND OTHER MALAY DELIGHTS – MALAY FOOD BOOTH (LOCATED IN FRONT OF THE MAIN STAGE)

For a hit of nostalgia and the flavours of good-old Singaporean local food, be sure to stop by the Malay food booth right in front of the main stage to savour one of their many traditional Malay delights.

Backed by several years of experience cooking authentic Malay food and ultimately, with lots of heart, their satay, assorted puffs and nasi biryani come with the promise of vibrant flavours and alluring aromas.

DURIAN ICE CREAM – 211 HOUSE OF DURIAN (BOOTH 183)

Being massive fans of the iconic ‘king of fruits’, there was no way that we were going to pass up on the durian ice cream from 211 House Of Durian. A notch more flavourful (and richer) than its recent McFlurry counterpart, we highly recommend getting this if you’re looking to cool off or simply satisfy your craving for durian.

And costing S$5 for a large cone, this is something many people would often brush off, but we assure you that doing so would be a huge mistake.

NEON BUBBLE WAFFLES (BOOTH 194)

Inspired by the popular Hong Kong street food snack, ‘gai dan zai’, this stall sells innovative egg waffles that come in all shapes, colours, fillings and toppings.

We ordered for ourselves their signature Bubble Waffles (S$6) which comes filled with all sorts of sweet, diabetes-inducing delights such as Oreos, whipped cream, M&Ms and more.

CHEESEWHEEL PASTA – GIOIA (BOOTH 120)

When it comes to creamy pasta, cheese is a must—and lots of it. Over at Goia, get your hands on their Cheesewheel Pasta (S$8) that features freshly cooked pasta, mixed around directly on a cheese wheel.

Tossed and swirled until everything is properly covered in cheese, the pasta develops a rich, creamy exterior that tastes as delicious as it looks. S$8 may seem hefty but it really is worth the splurge.

LIVE MUSIC PERFORMANCES (MAIN STAGE)

In between activities, be sure to pop by the Main Stage to check out the repertoire of musical acts in store. The music line-up comprises various local talents ranging from the established musicians to the young and budding ones, so what you can expect is a vibrant mix of sounds from yesteryear and of today.

The 13.5-hectare garden was built in 1975 by renowned Taiwanese architect, Professor Yuen-Chen Yu, and it has since become one a hotspot for tourists—yet, it’s ironic that so many Singaporeans haven’t even been there before.

From the garden’s stunning bonsai collection, pavilions and pagodas, Chinese Garden is perfect for an outing if you’re ever in search of a new adventure. And while it does not boast the same glamour and majesty of Gardens by the Bay, it is still one of the most iconic parks in Singapore.

STROLL THROUGH THE BONSAI GARDEN

Open from 9am to 5pm daily, the Bonsai Garden is built in Suzhou-style and stepping into this place makes you feel as if you are transported into a traditional Chinese home from a typical Chinese period drama. Even if plants are not your thing, one can’t deny that walking through this lush space is incredibly therapeutic.

ENJOY A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE GARDEN IN THE PAGODA

Probably one of the most iconic structures in the garden, the Cloud Piercing Pagoda is a 7-storey tower with a pretty spiral staircase that leads you to the top where you can enjoy the panoramic view over Jurong Lake and the West of Singapore.

Standing at 48m tall, the majestic traditional Chinese architecture is definitely one of the perfect photo spots for you to up your Instagram game.

FEED TURTLES AT THE TURTLE MUSEUM

Kids will love the Live Turtle And Tortoise Museum–which is home to more than 200 turtles and tortoises–that holds the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of Turtle and Tortoise in the world.

For an admission fee of only S$5 for adults and S$3 for children, you can get to see over 60 species of turtles and tortoises and also get a chance to feed the calm and cute animals.

There is much to behold and be stoked about this festive season as we usher in the year of the dog this Chinese New Year. Besides the usual house visitations, reunion meals and customary receiving of ang paos (red packets), there is loads more to look forward to, especially in Chinatown.

With a variety of stalls lining up the streets of Chinatown with interesting knick-knacks to buy and festive foods to try, we can’t think of anywhere better to soak up the Lunar New Year atmosphere than at this bustling district.

Stuff yourselves silly with an array of mouth-watering new year delicacies, enjoy the brilliant lights and decorations of the stalls and shop for traditional goodies from cookies, decorative items to even costumes! This is one street bazaar you do not want to miss!

CHINESE NEW YEAR GOODIES GALORE

Walking around the bustling night market, one of the most prominent sounds you will likely hear echoing through the streets is the hot deals for peanuts, dried goods and seeds.

Sunflower or melon seeds to Chinese people are what popcorn is to moviegoers, they make a great snack and are one of the most highly consumed perishables during the Lunar New Year.

Peanuts, on the other hand, possess a more symbolic value. To the Chinese people, It symbolizes vitality, longevity, and riches which is why it is often bought and eaten during the festive season.

Chinese New Year—or any other cultural celebration for that matter—would not quite be the same without an abundance of thematic cookies.

From almond cookies, pineapple tarts and even some oddities that we have never encountered before, there is no doubt something for every household. We particularly love the range of goodies there are on display and the fact that many of the stalls here give out free samples.

Perhaps one of the most impressive things to see at the market is the massive stalls selling dried meat. These items are commonly used in Chinese cooking in a variety of different ways.

Whether it’s dried Chinese sausages you fancy, waxed duck or even a variety of cured delights, there is bound to be something to astound you.

KNICK-KNACKS AND DECORATIVE ITEMS

Here at the Chinatown Chinese New Year market, you will find no shortage of decorative items and knick-knacks to beautify your home with or even to give away as souvenirs.

We may not be the traditional sort but we were thoroughly impressed by the sheer diversity here—from Chinese calligraphy, red packets with various designs to even doggy-centric knick-knacks signifying the year of the dog.

BRILLIANT DECORATIONS

When it comes to festive decorations, Singapore is rarely known to skimp on extravagance, let alone the sheer size of its decorative displays.

This year, along New Bridge Road along the outskirts of the Chinatown district, locals and visitors alike will get to marvel at the massive dog display there. Feel free to snap a few photos or even take a selfie with it—just be sure to watch for oncoming traffic while you’re at it!

FESTIVE PLANTS

If you are someone who is intrigued by exotic botanicals, then be sure to make a stop at one of the many plant stalls. Besides the traditional tangerine plants and Pussy Willows, you will also get to see a wide range of exotic plant species that are only exclusively available during the Chinese New Year.

This year’s Chinese New Year Market over at Chinatown takes place along Pagoda Street, Smith Street, Sago Street, Temple Street and Trengganu Street.
