With 5 different Japanese food concepts under one roof, Tsukiji Fish Market is quite a paradise for Japanese food lovers. They offer a wide range of Japanese cuisine at fairly affordable price points.

From hearty ramen to fresh sashimi air-flown directly from Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market twice a week, this is one Japanese restaurant in the heart of Orchard Road to love if you don’t already know.

You’d be glad to hear that Tsukiji Fish Market is set to enthral with brand new additions to their vast variety of Japanese fare that they have to offer. From 9th July 2018 until 31st August 2018, you can quote ‘ladyironchef‘ to enjoy 20% off the total bill on the à la carte menu*.

Here is what you can expect on your next visit to Tsukiji Fish Market, in accordance to the concepts that they offer.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

‘Dobin’ refers to ceramic teapot while ‘mushi’ means steam—that would give you an idea of how this light, yet flavourful teapot soup is made. The flavours were all harnessed with the premium ingredients, hence expect a soup that is simple in flavour yet very complex in layers.

The five seasonal nigiri sushi varieties we had were otoro (fatty tuna), hirame (flounder), ika (cuttlefish), buri (wild yellowtail) and torched kamasu (Japanese barracuda). Chef Kenji tickled our taste buds with the luxurious fatty tuna belly; the burst of umami flavours and ultimate freshness once again reminded us why we are such big fans of this Japanese restaurant.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Although nothing else can beat the otoro in our hearts, a close contender had to be the kamasu—which was blow-torched to form a slightly crispy skin on the surface. All it needed was a touch of the chef’s homemade shoyu sauce to make it even better!

One notable dish to look out for is Sushi Jiro’s signature Ikura and Uni Bowl. Expect a combustion of complex flavours from two highly-prized ingredients you can find in all prestigious Japanese restaurants—ikura (roe) and uni (sea urchin).

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Thanks to the generous portion of ikura, every mouthful was sensational and we were blown away by the refined texture of the rich uni. Have it with just a small dab of wasabi to enhance the natural flavours even more.

The 10-course omakase dinner gives you more reasons to indulge. Luxuriate in the expanded selection of high-quality ingredients that further elevates Sushi Jiro’s omakase repertoire. Be treated to a splendid feast showcasing seasonal fish comprising fresh sashimi and sushi.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Each course was unique with a mix of delicate and fresh flavours. Chef Kenji handles each item with care, ensuring to not overwhelm your palate nor have one particular item outshine another.

Some—like the Chutoro—were served as it is, allowing you to savour the sheer decadence that is its rich and fatty contents while others such as the Maguro and the Kamasu were either seasoned with a gentle lick of their homemade shoyu, freshly grated wasabi to better bring out its natural flavours.

Going through the painstaking process of making their own shoyu right down to grating their own wasabi, you just know that Chef Kenji is the real deal. Most, if not all of the fresh fish and seafood served here are seasonal and deliberately chosen during specific seasons where they are the most delicious.

They are specially bid for and air-flown over to Singapore 4 times a week from Tsukiji Market in Tokyo!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Our recommendation is to include a bit of everything in a single bite to fully enjoy the flavour and textural components—from the gentle popping of the ikura, the rich and bold flavours of the fatty toro, right down to the tiny hit of wasabi which provides a nice touch of heat.

And you get the absolute discount if you quote ‘ladyironchef’ upon making your reservations. Instead of S$100++ per pax, pay only S$80++ per pax for this sushi lunch set.

CHIRASHI DON

Here’s an insider tip: You probably will not be able to find the Chirashi Don among Sushi Jiro’s menu offerings but make a simple request to have it made and Chef Kenji will be more than delighted to prepare it for you. The dish comprises generous servings of thickly cut sashimi and ikura that is all neatly placed atop premium Japanese rice.

Each individual fish boasts its own unique quality, from the fatty tuna to the umami-packed uni. For individuals who adore fresh sashimi, this is the ultimate indulgence.

The Chirashi Don is available at S$38++ per bowl.

STELLAR TEMPURA

Should you find yourself craving for something fried, the Assorted Tempura (S$18++) off the a la carte menu promises to hit the spot. The dish is an assortment of ebi, fish and a variety of vegetable tempura—all of which are thinly coated in a light batter and deep-fried to crispy perfection.

S$58++ LUNCH SETS

Sushi Jiro also has several lunch sets at S$58++.

Our favourite has got to be the Gindara Teriyaki which features a fillet of grilled Silver Cod that is given a lick of Sushi Jiro’s homemade teriyaki sauce. The oily fish had a robust and deeply charred flavour which the savoury, sweet sauce complemented very well.

The lunch set is served with several slices of sashimi, tofu, pickles, chawanmushi and miso soup.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins><ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins>

Served in a martini glass, the Japanese Fruit Tomato Cocktail comprises a chilled Japanese tomato, sweet and sour jelly (Tosazu Jelly), white fish, uni and Oba leaf pesto sauce. Every mouthful was a combination of bright flavours that were nicely underscored by savoury and umami notes.

The Yude Kani (crab) features sweet flakes of handpicked crabmeat mixed with earthy Kani miso. The crabmeat is complemented with Chef’s Kasajima’s special sanbaizu sauce and a tiny dollop of yuzu foam that sits neatly above it. The citrusy qualities helped to balance out the robust flavour of the crabmeat nicely, resulting in a surprisingly refreshing starter.

The tai fish head soup was a much-needed soul booster—hot, comforting and a great palate cleanser.

The sashimi offering is a line-up of Shima-aji (Striped Jack) sashimi with Himalayan pink salt freshly grated over top, Tsubugai (whelk) sashimi and Kinmedai (snapper) Sashimi. Each sashimi item was fresh and we also appreciated the chef’s use of freshly grated wasabi instead of the conventional powdered version.

Depending on the day’s catch, look forward to the delightfully succulent Botan Ebi. Large, clear water prawns come served with a ponzu dipping sauce infused with umami-packed truffle oil. Before you lower the prawn into your mouth, you are first hit with the robust aroma of truffle, followed by the salty, citrusy profiles of the ponzu sauce.

This was easily the best item of the omakase dinner menu.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins><ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins><ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins><ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins><ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins>

If you love cod, then the Gindara Saikyo Yaki (S$48++) is sure to get you reminiscing about it for days. Miso-licked black cod is grilled and served alongside pickled ginger root. The miso added a sweet and savoury quality to the fish and its charred exterior provided a secondary depth of flavour.

Fat Cow’s Chef’s Table Omakase Dinner at Fat Cow (S$280++ per pax) comes with starter, appetiser, fish soup, crab, wagyu, seasonal sashimi, 10 pieces of nigiri sushi, Akadashi Miso Soup, Japanese omelette and Japanese fruits; what you will be paying for is fresh and seasonal produce of the highest quality.

Otherwise, you can also go for the Chef’s Table Omakase Lunch (S$120++ per pax) which consists of a starter, appetiser, 8 pieces of nigiri sushi, Akadashi Miso Soup, Japanese omelette and dessert.

Through his many travels, Chef Akira Back has acquired a multitude of culinary inspirations which he applies to the food he creates, dishing out incredible and whacky creations that intricately fuse elements from the places that he has visited, without being too overbearing on the palate.

Look forward to a bit of excitement and adventure when you dine in this signature restaurant at JW Marriott Singapore South Beach because you will not find an experience quite as exquisite as this elsewhere.

STARTER – AB PIZZA (TUNA OR MUSHROOM)

The weekend brunch menu kicks off with a starter of the highly acclaimed AB Pizza which you can have topped with either tuna or mushroom. Created by Chef Akira himself to help ease Americans into eating raw fish, this fusion of East and West is truly one of the best things you could ever put into your mouth.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The pizza comes on a thin, crisp tortilla base spread with an umami aioli, topped with thinly sliced tuna and a dash of truffle oil. Fine sprigs of micro shiso are also added to enhance the visual appeal of this dish.

Every bite fills the palate with robust umami-packed goodness, which is nicely underscored by the gentle crackling of the thin crust.

MAIN OPTION 1 – HAMACHI KAMA

Hamachi Kama refers to yellowtail (Hamachi) collar, which is the fattiest and juiciest part of the fish. It is usually grilled or broiled, allowing the fat to render so as to achieve perfectly crisp skin.

Here at Akira Back, this dish is done to the utmost perfection. The flesh is tender enough that you can easily scrape it off the cartilage with chopsticks, and the ginger balsamic dressing that comes served on the side does well to cut through the richness of the fish collar.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

This massive steak is ideal for sharing between 2 people (hence the one-time supplement of S$20) and steak lovers should know that you really get bang for your buck with this cut. It was the highlight of our brunch and it would be yours, too.

FREE-FLOW TEMPURA AND SUSHI ROLLS

The best part of this stunning brunch is the wide variety of unlimited cooked-to-order tempura and sushi rolls that come as part of the brunch menu.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Take your pick of seafood and vegetable tempura such as the classic ebi (shrimp), ika (squid), anago (conger eel), shiitake, enoki and loads more.

And if you are really out to indulge, go for the nine different varieties of sushi roll types, from the hosomaki—the humble thin rice rolls containing one singular ingredient —to the uramaki, inside-out rolls otherwise commonly known as California rolls.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

One of our favourites is the signature Godzilla Roll, which filled with unagi, and topped with sliced avocado and bits of diced strawberry. It took us a while, but we soon figured out how this unassuming dish bore a resemblance to the iconic dinosaur-like monster—think avocado as its green skin, and the strawberry signifying Godzilla’s frenzied eyes.

DESSERT OPTION 1 – AB CHEESECAKE

No brunch would be complete without rounding off with a sweet treat, but at the same time, you would not want something too heavy. Which is why, the menu has been carefully and thoughtfully planned out to include two desserts—the AB Cheesecake and the Pillow. You have a choice between both.

The AB Cheesecake is as rich as a cheesecake should be but the mild acidity from the coconut-lime sorbet and the apricot compote does well to cut through that.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The Assorted Fish Chirashi (S$16.80) is one delight you must order. This don comes with 4 different types of premium sashimi; salmon, tuna and swordfish are staples whereas the fourth sashimi is on rotation subject to the available fish of the day.

Although some may find comfort in consistency, a little surprise and unpredictability at meal time is always welcomed.

Do not be deceived by the small bowl. Our don came with 2 to 3 thick, juicy slices per type of sashimi, a generous helping of fish roe, a few slices of cucumber atop sweet sushi rice.

Although not the most affordable choice for an everyday meal, it is one we would splurge on again as the Assorted Fish Chirashi was worth every penny.

JJ.Com Fish Mart’s Tempura Shrimp with Aburi Salmon Maki (S$14.80) was the proud recipient of the SR Signatures award in 2016. This was unsurprising as the presentation and taste of the maki was nothing short of fantastic.

A thick slab of smokey melt-in-your-mouth aburi salmon is layered precisely atop the rice filled with crispy and sweet tempura shrimp. Finally, the maki is topped off with Bonito flakes and Japanese mayonnaise drizzled all over the plate.

Overall, we can certainly say that JJ.Com Fish Mart is one Japanese eatery that we will be adding to our list of favourite casual Japanese eateries and it is definitely one worth the visit.

Japanese rice bowls are all the rage and we are happy that the trend is here to stay. Besides Kuro Maguro which just opened earlier this year, we have discovered another gem in Tanjong Pagar that offers affordable donburi.

Salmon Samurai in 100AM Mall mainly features S$9.90 customisable salmon donburi sets. Of a mere 10-minute walk from Tanjong Pagar Station, the Japanese eatery’s prime location and hospitable service make it a popular dining location for those who are working in the vicinity.

Ready for this quick and affordable salmon don fix?

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Salmon Samurai goes by an efficient semi-self service concept where diners will make payment at the counter and collect their utensils before taking a seat. Once your food is ready, the wait staff will bring them to your table.

We decided to go with brown rice for our Garlic Shoyu Salmon (S$9.90). The huge serving came with generous pieces of tender salmon and an onsen egg sitting atop a bed of warm and moist brown rice.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

If brown rice is not your thing, you can also choose to have your salmon with udon or mixed salad. For more flavours in your bowl, there are also extra toppings such as avocado and ebiko.

Don’t forget to complete your meal with a Warrior Maki (S$9.90). We really enjoyed the combustion of flavours which came from the crab meat, salmon sashimi, fresh cucumber and savoury chicken floss. The creamy garlic mayo added an interesting sweet and sour note to it.

Apart from Garlic Shoyu Salmon, diners also have other choices including Salmon Sashimi with Avocado, Salmon Mentaiko, Spicy Salmon and Salmon Poke (S$9.90).

While options are rather limited, the dishes are hearty and unpretentious just the way we like it.

Do you know that there is a little Japan Town in the City Hall precinct?

CHIJMES is home to 7 great Japanese restaurants. The central area of CHIJMES sits a beautiful cathedral and surrounding it are lush flowers and greenery. Within the area, there are your Japanese restaurants and bars.

This includes popular names such as Tatsu, Gyu-Kaku and Ikkousha Ramen. The Japanese restaurants in CHIJMES focus on different things – some specialise in ramen, others in healthy Japanese dishes. You can also find a traditional sushi bar with the freshest catch of the day.

With just a minute’s walk away from City Hall MRT and many surrounding bus stops, CHIJMES is easily accessible via public transport. If you drive, parking rates are reasonable too. Here are 7 Japanese Restaurants in CHIJMES to love.

#1 ASHINO

For an authentic sushi bar experience, visit Ashino at CHIJMES. Do not let the 10-seater restaurant’s obscure location deter you!

A multi-course lunch at Ashino ranges from S$120++ to S$250++ per pax, but what you get return is aged sushi prepared by Japanese Chef Taku Ashino who previously fronted Hide Yamamoto at Marina Bay Sands.

Over here, guests get to savour “shari–sushi rice” which has been cooked in an iron kettle with air-flown Mt Fuji water. The succulent Botan Ebi – sourced from Hokkaido – has been aged for three days and the end result is an insanely delicious shrimp sushi with a subtle sweet aftertaste. The aged chutoro and grilled nodoguro were unforgettable too. Quality sashimi always enhances a sushi experience.

#2 GYU-KAKU

Gyu-Kaku is a reputable Yakiniku restaurant chain with over 600 outlets in Japan and five stores across our sunny island. The grilled meat specialty Japanese restaurant is perfect for those with a carnivorous appetite – but of course, healthy greens such as Horenso Spinach Salad (S$6++) are available too.

But we say focus on the meats.

Order the 180-gram Kagoshima Wagyu Premium Loin Steak (S$78++) – a premium well-marbled delicate Kagoshima beef that has so much fatty goodness to love.

Fancy a feast? Why not get the Gyu-Kaku Premium Set($61++ per pax, min. orders of 2 pax required) which includes Australia Wagyu Thick Tongue, Australia Wagyu Karubi, Kagoshima Wagyu Chuck Karubi, Kurobuta Belly, Kimuchi, Soup, Rice and more.

#3 IKKOUSHA RAMEN

Ikkousha Ramen resembles a very authentic Japanese ramen bar with a cosy and intimate seating, complete with counter seats. The menu is pretty extensive and there are many different ramen choices to pick from.

The most popular one is the Tonkotsu Special (S$16.50), and it is also the most value-for-money bowl here. The pork broth is very creamy and extremely flavourful, and it comes with springy thin ramen noodles, soft flavoured egg and a generous amount of pork cha-shu.

Also, try the God Fire Ramen (S$14) – which is a spicy ramen option where you can pick your preferred spice level (level 1 to 4). But be warned that even level 2 is extremely spicy!

Do not leave Tatsu until you have had their Flambé Wagyu Beef (S$168++) and Live Lobster (seasonal price).

The former is a high-quality marbled Japanese beef with intense marbling while the latter is a superbly fresh chef-recommended sweet crustacean. Both aromatic meats have been cooked till fork tender and are absolutely scrumptious.

To get more bang for one’s buck, order the Teppanyaki Course instead (from S$68++ to S$158++ per pax) where you get to indulge in a plethora of Japanese delights such as cod fish, wagyu steak, king prawn, scallop and lobster.

#6 SHIROKIYA

Shirokiya focuses mainly on healthy Japanese dishes, with many of their menu items featuring Hyaluronic Acid and Collagen. While many go for their sumptuous hot pots, they also have great lunch options that are wallet-friendly.

Each of their lunch sets come with rice, salad, miso soup and pickles as well. Our favourite ones are the Luxury Salmon and Salmon Roe Rice Bowl (S$25) and Unagi Rice in Hot Stone Bowl (S$20).

If you are a salmon lover, treat yourself to the Luxury Salmon Bowl – filled to the brim with raw salmon, lightly torched salmon, fresh salmon roe and more. Lots of salmon goodness indeed! They also have a tuna option with a huge dollop of negitoro (chopped salmon and leek).

#7 TONKATSU & SAKE BAR TONZAEMON BY MA MAISON

TONKATSU & Sake Bar Tonzaemon by Ma Maison has nailed it with their fragrant breaded deep-fried pork cutlets. Crispy on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside; these beautiful golden brown tonkatsu have successfully achieved an excellent texture thanks to the carefully aged and marinated meat used.

Lunch sets are very affordable and start from S$17.80++.

We highly recommend the Kuro Buta Katsu Set (S$31.80++) – diners can opt for either pork loin or pork fillet – which is essentially a Japanese heritage pig breed specially raised for its flavourful fatty meat. Note that every set is served with rice, tonjiru soup and pickles.

Itacho Sushi

Salmon skin sushi for S$0.40 – everyone will know Itacho Sushi because of this. And more than that, they are a favourite because of the wide variety of sushi creations at very friendly prices. When dining at Itacho, treat yourself to a selection of makis, rolls and nigiris made with fresh ingredients. They have very value-for-money lunch sets, too.

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar is a small eatery nestled a corner of Wisma’s Food Republic which serves delicious and inexpensive Japanese food. The star dish here is the legendary Shiok Maki. It is made up of avocado, unagi and aburi salmon, drenched with the most amazing cheesy sauce that is seemingly a legit mixture of mayo and mentai, and completed with a generous topping of tobiko.
This is surely one place for a quick fix of Japanese food in between shopping at Orchard Road.

Ryoshi Sushi Ikeikemaru may be a conveyer belt sushi restaurant, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that they are a medicore joint. They have surprisingly fresh sushi at pocket-friendly prices – definitely worth a try when you are craving for Japanese food.

Sushi Tei

One of the most popular casual Japanese restaurants in Singapore, Sushi Tei is where locals head to for cheap and good Japanese food. There are many popular dishes, but we love the absolutely stunning Sashimi Salad, which comes with a generous serving of sashimi; and the Golden Roll.

The Sushi Bar

The Sushi Bar at level three of Far East Plaza serves the standard dishes like sushi, sahimi, Japanese-style pastas and donburis, but if you only have room for one dish, you must try the much-lauded Salmon Aburi Sushi (S$14.50). It is really good, and the main reason why this hole-in-the-wall sushi bar is always packed with regulars.

Tomi Sushi

Tomi Sushi may not be the cheapest restaurant in this guide, but it offers a variety of set lunches which are great value for money. Let’s make this clear: Tomi Sushi is not one of those classy Japanese restaurants where you bring your partner on a date night; it is more like a neighbourhood joint where you know that the food is always good, and you are surrounded by families happily tucking in.

#02-76/77 Velocity

Wasabi Tei

Wasabi Tei used to command long queues during its heydays, but since its former Chef Peter left, business has slowed down significantly. While the food is not out-of-this-world good, there is no denying that it is very affordable – most of the bento sets are priced between S$6 to S$12.

If you need a fuss-free meal when in Orchard Road, this is a place where you can have decent Japanese food without breaking the bank. And best of all, you no longer have to queue up to get a table here.

When craving for Japanese food, one of my to-go places is Akashi Japanese Restaurant. It has reliable and pretty good Japanese food. And most importantly, a meal at Akashi is relatively affordable – if you go for their set meals. Most of the sets – served with salad/rice, soup and fruits – are priced below $20 during lunch (additional $3-4 for dinner).

The Sushi Tsuki ($16 lunch, $20 dinner), pictured above, comes with a beautiful assortment of nigiri sushi. Good value for the portion.

The Otsukuri set ($26 lunch, $29 dinner), served with an assortment of freshly-sliced sashimi, is a simple set of classic Japanese favourites for the ladies with smaller appetites.

Tenzaru Chasoba set ($15 lunch, $18 dinner) with gorgeous deep-fried tempura that is not too greasy. The chilled green tea noodle is also one of the better ones, and the tempura moriawase includes ebi, salmon and root vegetables coated with fragrant fresh batter.

The Sukiyaki ($16 lunch, $19 dinner) is also worth a try. Slices of beef and vegetable lightly cooked in a sweet and flavourful broth; so hearty, it is something that I can eat all the time.

If you are not going to Akashi for their omakase, you will still be served fresh sashimi and sushi. But, do not harbour high expectations of the ala carte items – at that price, the quality is decent, but certainly not the gastronomic level you would get when you pay at fine dining restaurants.

The sets are very decently-priced and it works out to be an enjoyable experience that is not too gruelling on the pocket. A meal at Akashi is probably slightly more expensive than your usual sushi chains, but I dare say they have much better Japanese food.

I’ve written about Koh Grill & Sushi Bar’s before, but I thought I’d just share it again, because lately, the whole Singapore seems to be going gaga over their Shiok Maki.

I’ve written about Koh Grill & Sushi Bar’s before, but I thought I’d just share it again, because lately, the whole Singapore seems to be going gaga over their Shiok Maki.

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar is a small eatery that sits within Wisma’s Food Republic, and they serve honest Japanese food at affordable prices. And the one dish that makes everyone go back again and again is the Shiok Maki. It is a maki made up of avocado, unagi and aburi salmon, drenched with a supremely addictive creamy sauce that is seemingly a legit mixture of mayo and mentai, then topped with a copious amount of tobiko. Well, no one really knows the recipe, but sounds tempting already?

The Shiok Maki is hands down one of the best things I’ve ever had in life. Trust me, I am not exaggerating. This is surely one place to head to for a quick fix of Japanese food in between shopping at Orchard Road. Be prepared to queue though; an hour’s wait is the norm.

Much has been said about Ryoshi Sushi Ikeikemaru, the sushi restaurant at the basement of Liang Court. I am going straight to the point: Whatever you have heard about Ryoshi – it is true. They serve surprisingly good and fresh sushi at very affordable prices.

I was a little apprehensive about trying it out as I thought it was just another mediocre Japanese restaurant serving sushi on conveyor belt. Thankfully, my worries turned out to be unnecessary. Ryoshi Sushi Ikeikemaru is very decent and judging from the crowd during meal times, it is already very popular.

Ryoshi charges by the plate, and prices range from $1.80 to $6.80 for different sushi. In addition, they also have a selection of ala carte dishes such as Tempura Udon ($9.60), Ebi Fried ($5.80), Chawanmushi ($3.80) and Salmon Avocado Salad ($7.60).

Don’t visit Ryoshi Sushi Ikeikemaru and expect to get quality sushi that you will get from top Japanese restaurants. But what you can expect is reasonably good sushi at pocket-friendly prices. If you are a fan of Itacho Sushi, I think you will like Ryoshi too.

There are some restaurants that we frequent because of one particular dish. For instance, I can never imagine myself going to Yan Ting without ordering the heavenly char siew sou. Or La Cantina without getting the lovely crabmeat linguine. Or Antoinette Patisserie without tasting its signature Antoinette earl gray cake. You get the idea.

One of those must-have dishes that I am going to add to my list is the Chirashi – a bowl of sushi rice topped with sashimi – from Aoki Japanese Restaurant by the Les Amis Group.

If you’ve had Aoki’s Chirashi ($35) before, I am sure you will agree with me that it is happiness in a bowl. I’d come back again and again just for this.

Given that this is a restaurant by the Les Amis Group, we had high hopes, and I’m glad to tell you that our lunch at Aoki did not disappoint – if anything, only exceeded expectations.

Besides the chirashi, we also had the Nigri Sushi Jyo-Sen ($30), a beautiful platter of seven types of sushi and one sushi roll served with salad, miso soup and dessert.

Aoki Restaurant at Shaw Centre is definitely not cheap. But I feel that the prices of set lunches are acceptable ($35-50) as it serves top quality Japanese food in a nice environment. Dinner sets are available from $40-80. And if you feel like indulging, omakase during lunch is $100, while dinner is $165.

Given that there are many mediocre Japanese restaurants that tend to overcharge, I’d gladly pay a little more to enjoy a meal at Aoki.

While some people like to dine at the bar counter (which can only accommodate 15 guests) and witness the chefs in action, I like the table seats (there are only three tables) which offers an intimate and cosy experience. Remember to specify your preference when calling to make a reservation.

Nestled in the quiet Triple One Somerset, Fukuichi Japanese Dining serves decent Japanese food at pocket-friendly prices. You can get set lunches such as Tempura Teishoku and Sashimi Teishoku from $20, while bento and dinner sets are between $25-40. I find it very reasonable for the quality and portion.

If I am meeting my friends in Orchard Road, I will definitely go to Fukuichi, it is my newest go-to place when craving for Japanese food.

I had the Sushi Teishoku ($20), which comes with a generous serving of sushi; while my dining companion ordered the Saba Shioyaki Set ($18). Both were excellent.

An assortment of sashimi goes for $38, otherwise you can get them individually: Salmon ($15), Scallop ($18), Toro ($35), Maguro ($18).

The Spider Maki ($15) – deep fried soft shell crab roll – was also delicious. If you are not a fan of soft shell crab, go for other popular choices like California Roll ($12), or Seared Salmon Roll ($20).

Also available on the menu are sushi hand rolls like the Tuna & Spring Onion Hand Roll ($12), Crab Meat Hand Roll ($3), and Eel with Cucumber Hand Roll ($6).

Fukuichi offers excellent set meals at good prices. With its stellar location, the Japanese restaurant is a hidden gem in town. I am surprised that it is not as popular as I’d have expected it to be. The restaurant definitely deserves your support.

There are many Japanese restaurants in town, but to find one that has good Japanese food at reasonable prices? That’s no mean feat. So imagine my happiness when I chanced upon Rakuzen Japanese Restaurant at Millenia Walk.

The restaurant has a comprehensive menu, with many choices in the sushi, sashimi, fried, and grilled section. Most of the items are priced below $20. For instance, you can get a yakiniku set (with rice and miso soup) for $16, and there is the option of adding sashimi to the set at $23. The prices here are almost comparable to everyone’s favourite Sushi Tei, and the best part is you don’t have to queue for a table.

Rakuzen offers a fanciful range of sashimi – from a nice platter of eight kinds of sashimi ($80) for 3-5 persons; to a chef’s special sashimi set ($40/pax) – but we opted for a simple salmon sashimi ($13 for 7 pcs).

The cranky salmon roll ($9) and California roll ($9) arrived shortly after. Both rolls were simple – the former, salmon in spicy mayonnaise roll topped with flakes and flying fish; and the latter, an avocado roll with omelette, and crabstick – nothing crazy in terms of flavour, but just done well enough to hit the spot.

Next, we had the sukiyaki-style beef set ($18), which was hearty and soulful.

If you like unagi, you should also try Razuken’s roasted eel set ($18).

All in all, the food at Rakuzen is of a good standard, and coupled with the fact that it is wallet-friendly, I would certainly go back when I want Japanese food.

It’s always nice to randomly walk into a new restaurant, order without doing any prior research, and leave as a happy customer. And we did just that at Hinoki Japanese Restaurant at China Square Central.

After our meeting at Raffles Place, Velda, Beatrice and I were initially going for Ramen at Biefu restaurant, but in the end we decided to be adventurous and try out a new place. We walked around in the area, and chanced upon Hinoki Japanese Restaurant.

It is a small space with bar seats and tables, and we like that it is very cosy. The food at Honoki Restaurant is not cheap, but for the quality, it is worth the price.

It was a bad idea to let Velda do the ordering as being the glutton she is (who am I kidding, all three of us are gluttons), she ended up over-ordering.

We shared a Sushi Platter ($95) which was enough to serve a football team. Okay, I’m just exaggerating, but it was a lot of food, and not to mention that we also had a Salmon Sashimi, Chawanmushi, Mentaiko Udon, and some side dishes.

When we ordered Chawanmushi, the staff asked if we would like to try the “special” version. We went for it, and I’m sure you can see from the picture that it was quite spectacular.

While the sushi platter was impressive, the winner was the Mentaiko Udon. Drizzled with truffle oil, and topped with Mentaiko, the Udon was smooth and every bite was oh-so-good. Like what Velda said, everything tastes better when you add truffle oil. I am not a big fan of truffle oil (I think it’s over-hyped), but I have to agree that in this case, she was right. The truffle oil lifted the Mentaiko Udon and gave it a different dimension.

Overall, our meal at Hinoki Japanese Restaurant was good. We had fresh sushi and sashimi, and the nice chefs gave us sampling dishes which were not on the menu. (I half suspected it was because I was with two gorgeous ladies, but I’m not complaining since we had good food.)

It is a good place to bring your clients for a business luncheon if you are working in the area. At night, it is perfect as a place for a quiet dinner. If you don’t want to splurge, go for the bentos – they are slightly more affordable, prices range from $32 to $38.

I’ve walked past Sugisawa Japanese restaurant many times but somehow, I’ve never noticed it. On the outside, the Japanese restaurant at Robertson Quay looks very plain, which explains why I don’t remember seeing it before.

Ju suggested going there after reading raved reviews about the food. We had lunch there last week and we left the place very satisfied. I’d definitely recommend Sugisawa Japanese restaurant for good Japanese bento sets at affordable prices.

The menu has a good selection of Japanese food ranging from affordable bento sets ($15-22), good quality sushi ($15-25), and fresh sashimi ($13-40).

We shared the Sashimi moriawase ($25) which comprises an assortment of fresh sashimi. It was excellent value for the quality of the sashimi.

I was tempted by the Yakiniku bento ($15) and Ebi Fry bento ($16), but eventually I decided to stick with the Tonkatsu bento ($15).

The tonkatsu was fairly decent, not like those that you can get from tonkatsu speciality restaurants, but still good enough for me to satisfy my craving.

The Tempura bento ($18) that Ju had took our breath away when it arrived at the table. Not only do they look good, they taste great too!

Sugisawa Japanese Restaurant at Robertson Quay has very good value for money bento sets. Like other Japanese restaurants, the bento set is inclusive of rice and miso soup. But what makes Sugisawa different from the rest is that the portions are really generous and they even come with sashimi.

One thing to note, though. The service isn’t exactly friendly, and depending on how you see things, it can be quite intimidating. That said, Sugisawa is one of my new favourite Japanese restaurants. I’m not sure about you, but there’s just something about Japanese food that makes me happy.
