PETIT PAIN

Newly opened in August 2019, Petit Pain specialises in bread and pastries such as croissants, danishes and escargot rolls.

The humble bakery has a simple display counter with all their freshly-baked goods lined up neatly behind a glass case. Stepping into the space, the immediate smell of butter and bread tantalized our tastebuds, enticing us toward the golden-brown goodies.

PRODIGAL CAFE

If the name Prodigal Café seems to ring a bell, that’s because the eatery is the sister café of the now-defunct Prodigal Roasters which used to be located in the heartlands of Ang Mo Kio.

Their pancakes come in various flavours — Original, Tiramisu and Matcha. Their Original Snow Pancake ($S3.90) is soft and airy, finished with a liberal slathering of thick, milky cream. As for their beverage selection, take your pick from boba milk teas and refreshing fruit teas.

MØ CAFE

Are your legs drained from walking around Courts? Take a break at MØ Cafe, a cosy corner within the mega-store that you wouldn’t have thought much of. But trust us, their cakes are delicious and their coffee is seriously legit.

PENANG A1 CHENDOL

There are just some unbearably hot days when all you want to do is wolf down some ice — we get it. And so does Penang A1 Chendol. This hole-in-the-wall shop certainly knows how to do a mean bowl of Chendol.

Their no-frills Traditional Chendol (S$3) has got all the usual suspects of gula melaka, coconut milk, pandan jelly and kidney beans. They are pretty generous with the ingredients, ensuring a satisfying spoonful every time. If you’re in the mood for a drink instead, they do a solid D-24 Durian Smoothie (S$4.50/regular, S$5/large).

Run by the students from Temasek Polytechnic’s Culinary Academy, Sugarloaf is a training cafe that dishes out a variety of hot savouries and desserts. While you may not think much of a training cafe, you’d be very wrong in this case.

Sugarloaf’s desserts could camouflage themselves in any respectable patisserie, with their level of presentation and quality. Try for yourselves, whether it’s their Fruit Tart or Opera Cake.

What do you get when you meld Korean and Western flavours together? Two Hana knows the answer best. Apart from innovative mains, they also have an inventive dessert selection with offerings from milkshakes to ice cream.

Play it safe with their Berry Choco Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream (S$10) or go wild with their Honey Butter Sweet Potato Fries with Vanilla Ice Cream (S$8). Their ice cream range has pretty intriguing flavours as well, such as Doenjang Caramel and Honey Yucha (S$5.50/single, S$9/double).

Jiggly, airy and soft, soufflé pancakes are one of the most legendary hybrids in the history of desserts. It doesn’t matter if you can barely stand after your meal — you’ll always have space for this lightweight indulgence.

Singapore has seen many cafes serving up these cloud-soft pancakes. People just can’t seem to get enough of them. But, just when you thought you’ve seen them all, another cafe strikes again. 19 Tea, a popular chain in South Korea known for its soufflé pancakes and tea has opened at Our Tampines Hub.

Their souffle pancakes are some of the most wallet-friendly ones we’ve seen — any one of them will set you back at less than $5!

19 Tea is a dainty little cafe offering a range of soufflé pancakes and milk tea drinks. Their interior is dressed in vibrant pinks and minimalistic touches, providing customers with a youthful, bright atmosphere.

We tried the signature Soufflé Pancakes in three flavours — Original (S$3.90), Matcha (S$4.20) and Tiramisu (S$4.20).

The Original Pancake was slathered in thick, milky cream and finished with a strawberry garnish that could have been a little bigger. The pancake itself was light and airy, but the cream sauce was a little too sweet for us.

Their matcha rendition was underwhelming, with the only thing setting it apart from the Original being a sprinkle of matcha powder atop. It would have been even better if the matcha powder was incorporated into the pancake batter itself.

As for their Tiramisu Pancake, there was nothing distinctively “tiramisu” about it, apart from the cocoa powder dusting. Nevertheless, it was still pretty delicious.

Of course, we couldn’t leave without getting one of their milk teas. We ordered their Signature Milk Tea (S$5.10), a classic brown sugar boba milk tea. Sadly, it missed the mark. The milk tea was too thin and the pearls were too dense.

Overall, we can’t see ourselves making a trip to Tampines just for 19Tea. But, if you’re looking for an aesthetic backdrop for an Instagrammable photo, this is the place to hit up.
