Editor’s Note March 2013

Steak

There are few things better than a perfectly cooked slab of juicy, tender and well seasoned steak. Food trends come and go, but steaks will always be on the menu.

March 14th is known as Steak and BJ Day. But you know what? We are going to bring it a level up by declaring March as the month of steak. Why have a day for steaks when you can celebrate it for a month?

Food lovers in Singapore have reason to rejoice. Over the last 12 months, we have seen a number of restaurants specialising in steaks – Wooloomooo, Skirt at W Hotel, and Ruth’s Chris Steak House – opening in town. We will be telling you where to go for the best steaks in town, and for those on a budget, where you can find the more affordable steak houses.

Also, we will be sharing insights on understanding the different cuts of steaks. What is the difference between ribeye and fillet mignon? Which is the best cut of steak? Look forward to our special feature. In addition, we will be sneaking into the kitchen to get tips from chefs on how to cook the perfect steak.

Join us on our journey – on instagram, twitter and facebook – as we go on a mission to find the best steaks in Singapore.

Yardbird Yakitori Bar Hong Kong

Yardbird

One of the highlights during my trip to Hong Kong last year was my meal at Yardbird, an uber-hip yakitori bar with a Manhattan-chic vibe.

Judging from the crowd, Yardbird is already one of the hottest restaurants in Hong Kong. It has that winning formula that is hard to beat: a sexy and young crowd, a great drink list – consisting of sake, shochu and wine – and very tasty grilled skewers. Its yakitori menu (HK$38 per stick) offers nose-to-tail eating of a chicken; you can find anything from thigh meat to gizzard, heart, and tail. They are well-executed and straightforward and very delicious. But what you must not miss is the signature KFC (Korean Fried Cauliflower), it is kick-ass awesome and very addictive. I would fly to Hong Kong just to eat it.

Yardbird is definitely the place to go for a drink and some light bites when you are in Hong Kong. I am thrilled to see them ranking #46 in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards 2013. Congratulations to the team!

10 Best Meals of 2012

Salad in a pot

This post is slightly late. I had wanted to share this in January, but I was so caught up with work and travelling last month that I did not have the chance to sit down and review my year of eating.

I had many exceptional meals last year, which makes it difficult to pick my ten favourite dining experiences. As I reflected back on the places that I have eaten at over the last 12 months, the meals that left an impression and came to mind were because of the company. The best meals are often not the ones at expensive and fanciful restaurants, but the ones that you share with good friends.

Here are the ten best meals that I had in 2012.

Arteastiq Tea Bone China Millenia Walk Singapore

Arteastiq Tea Bone China

Speak about Arteastiq, and its tea lounge at Mandarin Gallery instantly comes to mind. Recently, the good people behind this one-of-its-kind art jamming cum studio café have gone traditional with its new restaurant Arteastiq Tea Bone China at Millenia Walk.

The décor was effortlessly classy, bringing a sense of nostalgia without the tackiness. We were especially fascinated by the birdcages that dangled from the ceiling, an attempt to recreate the experiences of olden-day Chinese merchants who’d bird-watch while sipping pots of tea.

Shiok Maki from Koh Grill & Sushi Bar

Shiok Maki

I’ve written about Koh Grill & Sushi Bar’s before, but I thought I’d just share it again, because lately, the whole Singapore seems to be going gaga over their Shiok Maki.

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar is a small eatery that sits within Wisma’s Food Republic, and they serve honest Japanese food at affordable prices. And the one dish that makes everyone go back again and again is the Shiok Maki. It is a maki made up of avocado, unagi and aburi salmon, drenched with a supremely addictive creamy sauce that is seemingly a legit mixture of mayo and mentai, then topped with a copious amount of tobiko. Well, no one really knows the recipe, but sounds tempting already?

The Shiok Maki is hands down one of the best things I’ve ever had in life. Trust me, I am not exaggerating. This is surely one place to head to for a quick fix of Japanese food in between shopping at Orchard Road. Be prepared to queue though; an hour’s wait is the norm.
