Chye Seng Huat Hardware, opened by the folks behind Papa Palheta and Loysel’s Toy, is one of the most popular cafes/coffee places in Singapore right now.

From the outside, Chye Seng Huat Hardware looks like a run-down hardware shop – but don’t be deceived by its name and exterior, it is actually a very hip coffee bar. In addition to the coffee bar, it also features a roastery, a coffee school and a private coffee tasting room.

Many people would agree that Papa Palheta started the whole cafe/coffee trend, and what they have achieved is pretty amazing. If you are a caffeine addict, there’s really no reason not to visit Chye Seng Huat Hardware. Trust me, you’d love it there.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone!

2012 was a very fulfilling year for ladyironchef. We launched our new design (thanks to the folks from Prodd), we introduced new sections on Food, Travel, Shopping and Lifestyle, we saw budding writers through their contributions of guests posts – just to name a few. And all these wouldn’t have been possible without your continual support. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of ladyironchef’s journey in 2012 – each and every one of you. With the new year, we strive to work even harder to share all the awesomeness in life with you.

This year, ladyironchef adapts a thematic approach in delivering features on a monthly basis. They serve as better guides and references, and brings the best of promotions and highlights to you. January has been pretty happening for us, and we have been going around sampling Chinese New Year (CNY) menus from various invitations. We may have reluctantly bade farewell to turkeys and log cakes, but we can always anticipate Lo Hei. In this month, we will be talking about CNY exclusives and specials from all over Singapore. Do look out for these special posts, and get excited about family dinners and massive feasting! You know that diets can wait till festive seasons are over, right?

The Royal Mail at the iconic Ascott Raffles Place is the latest venture by restaurateur Michel Lu. It offers a modern take on classic British cuisine. The menu is compact, and the main focus is on its roast prime rib.

I am going out on a limb to say that it is easily one of the best prime ribs that I’ve had in Singapore. If you love steak, you must make a trip to The Royal Mail.

Yes, they weren’t kidding when they bestowed this name upon the place. It is The Mall, indeed. If there was only one place you could shop at when in Florence, it is undisputedly this factory outlet.

Admit it – deep down within us, we all love steals and cheap thrills. And trust me when I say you will thank me for this recommendation.

The Mall is an exclusive outlet destination for luxury goods at a fraction of its original prices. Situated at the outskirt of Florence and at an unassuming enclave in the green Tuscan hills, a day at The Mall is a promising experience. The air in the open is fresh and crisp, the boundless skies are blue and calming, the surrounding is a humble and quiet neighborhood. We spent an entire afternoon there – shopping (well, needless to say), indulging in a mid-day snack, and to simply bask in the serenity of the countryside.

Tamon Izakaya

It’s amusing to watch the rate at which restaurants in Singapore open and close, so it was partly out of curiosity that we decided to visit Tamon Izakaya (214 East Coast Road) which has survived the test of time and influx of competitors to stay in operation for 18 years.

This Japanese eatery sits no more than 30 people, but we liked that tables were spaced sufficiently far apart to allow privacy of conversation. The restaurant was fully packed on a Saturday evening despite the horrors of parking along East Coast road, but we hear that business is quiet during lunch.

Out of the Pan

Out of the Pan at the basement of Raffles City is one of those places that I’ve always walked past, but never thought of trying. I finally went there one day, and the food was surprisingly good. The Banana Spilt Waffles ($14), in particular, was outstanding and one of the best I’ve had on our little island. The Chocolate Mania Crepe ($14) and Peking Duck Crepe ($15.50) were also very good.

The good news is DBS credit/debit card holders get to enjoy 1-for-1 promotion for waffles and crepes. The offer is available all day from Sunday to Thursday (10am – 10pm).
