The Midtown over at Upper Serangoon Road is fast-becoming another foodie haven with the exponential setting up of new eateries within its premises—a godsend for nearby residents and office workers.

Otoko is one of the newest additions to this Hougang enclave. This humble Japanese eatery first started out as a stall in a coffee shop at Sultan Plaza offering quality and comforting Japanese Donburi at affordable prices.

The menu at their new branch at The Midtown features a wider spread of items, like tendon as well as a mix-and-match menu for their Japanese curry rice in which diners can choose to stack on more of their preferred items. Otoko may not rank as high up as the greats but considering the affordability and the quality of the food they serve, this makes it an ideal spot to get your fix.

With the opening of Hillview Community Club, residents and those who are working near the area now have more dining options apart from restaurants and cafes at HillV2. One cafe that stood out among the rest of the casual dining spots there is Kohi-Ya.

Opened by the team behind Ninepress who also runs Kyu Coffee Bar at Prudential Tower, Kohi-Ya offers Asian cuisine that comes with a Creative twist. Think udon served with Mentaiko sauce, wagyu beef balls doused in Japanese curry and more.

Tian Kee & Co Reopens At Siglap Drive

Previously located at the old Dakota estate, Tian Kee & Co has reopened a new takeaway outlet at 46 Siglap Drive, off Frankel Avenue.

For those of you who are not familiar with Tian Kee & Co, it started as a local provision shop back in 1958 and it evolved into a bakery cafe at Dakota Crescent—one of Singapore’s oldest public housing estates. Unfortunately, the neighbourhood had to make way in late 2016 due to developments under Mountbatten’s estate renewal plans, and so did Tian Kee & Co.

 The wait is finally over, Tian Kee & Co is now back in the East of Singapore.

Noo Na Hol Dak – Oven-Baked Chicken & Beer Joint In Myeong-dong, Seoul

Strolling around the Myeong-dong district in Seoul, South Korea, you will find that Korean Fried Chicken joints are aplenty. However, one spot that was highly recommended to us was Noo Na Hol Dak. They have several outlets in Seoul but we visited the one right in the heart of Myeong-dong.

Upon stepping in, we found out for ourselves just how popular they are with both locals and tourists alike. The restaurant is spacious, making it a great place for communal gatherings and casual hangs with friends or colleagues. Beer is the beverage of choice to complement fried chicken—but of course.

The menu was pretty simple, focusing on what they do best: Korean-style chicken. Since Noo Na Hol Dak is well-known for their oven-baked chicken, we opted for the basic Crispy Baked Boneless Chicken (W16,900) and pints of Cass beer to enjoy.

Kimchi Jjigae is a staple in South Korea which we enjoy tremendously even in Singapore, so we made it a point to hunt down the best Kimchi Jjigae on our trip to Seoul.

We discovered a popular hole-in-the-wall eatery visited by locals called Gwanghwamun Jip, which is relatively near to Gyeongbokgung Palace. While the eatery lies in one of the most touristy spots in Seoul, it is tucked away from the main road and hidden from plain sight in a narrow alley.

Fans of Kimchi Jjiage have to make it a point to visit Gwanghwamun Jip! READ ON

Santap – New Muslim-Owned Cafe In Little India With Affordable Rice Bowls

Santap is a new muslim-owned cafe in Little India by the good folks from The Black Hole Group—who is behind Working Title and The Mad Sailors.

Santap, which means to eat luxuriously in Malay, offers a menu of healthy eats from sandwiches to stellar rice bowls. All of which are plated so beautifully that it would be a crime not to snap a shot of it for the ‘gram’.

Nestled within the newly opened boutique hotel, The Daulat—just a 5-minute walk from Rochor MRT station—this Muslim-owned cafe exudes a charming ambience and a cosy vibe that is just perfect for lounging about in the afternoon.
