Bukit Timah spans over a very large (or rather, long) stretch of road in the west side of Singapore, and is home to a great variety of restaurants and cafes. However, it can be tricky to venture to these eateries; navigating winding roads amidst islands of neighbourhoods without a car is not the easiest mission for those unfamiliar with the area.

Despite its meandering paths and general inaccessibility to public transport users, Bukit Timah is home to a hidden enclave of great cafes including the likes of perennial crowd-favourite, Atlas Coffeehouse, as well as amazing restaurants in the vicinity such as the restaurant-cum-marketplace, Greenwood Fish Market, and classy Italian restaurant, Ristorante da Valentino.

To aid your pilgrimage into the area, here is our guide to Bukit Timah’s Restaurants & Cafes. Clear your schedules, it’s time to satisfy your tummies!

AJIYA OKONOMIYAKI RESTAURANT

Craving some okonomiyaki? Not a particularly common sight – especially when we consider one with proper seating – Ajiya is a welcomed addition to the Japanese dining scene in the area.

Perfect as a casual meal or as a family activity, you can opt to either get the staff to grill up your okonomiyaki for you, or try your hand at designing and cooking one yourself!

Fat Belly is a new speakeasy-style steakhouse in Singapore that shares the same space with its sister brand and ice cream joint, Sugarhaus, at Serene Centre. It only opens in the evening, occupying the counter seats at the back of the ice cream parlour.

This 10-seater steakhouse is helmed by chef-owner Stanley Seow, who specialises in alternative, less well-known cuts of beef such as the Flat Iron, which is essentially a cut taken from the shoulder of a cow—generally much less tender than a tenderloin or even a ribeye but let us leave it to the expert to prove us otherwise.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Some side dishes to consider are their Guanciale Mac & Cheese (S$5), Salted Thyme Mushrooms (S$5) and the surprisingly addictive, Creamed Kale (S$5).

For dessert, don’t miss out on the unusual Foie Gras Ice Cream (S$13) that comes served with candied bananas, Speculoos and roasted nuts.

Situated right next to Coronation Plaza, KARA Cafe & Dessert Bar is a new cafe and dessert bar by the team behind Sogurt. It takes over the former space of Sogurt and this is where you can enjoy a splendid array of delicious food in a warm and welcoming environment.

To top it off, you will be dining in a beautiful space decorated by tropical foliage and imaginary creatures with art by Mark Wee.

When it comes to dessert and good food, it will always be a love-hate relationship. Well #sorrynotsorry because after today, you will be adding on one more cafe on your list of cafes to visit in Singapore.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We decided to begin our meal with the Classic Grilled Cheese (S$10.50). A signature Kara cheese blend and zesty sweet pickle relish are sandwiched in sourdough, and this spectacular combination is toasted to caramelised perfection prior to serving.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Remember all those cheese-pull videos? Well, now you can achieve that in real life and this dish sure left us with a cheesy grin.

The Pork Belly Miso (S$16) was an interesting creation that we had to try. Consisting of extremely tender kakuni braised pork belly, soft egg, cucumber edamame salad, miso cream and nori atop well-cooked rice, we particularly enjoyed the topping of ramen crisps as it added a nice, crunchy texture to the dish.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

But for the price point, we did feel that the portion served was not very substantial and this is perhaps something that could be improved for a better dining experience.

We ended our meal with the Matcha Berry Homemade Mochi Waffles with Salted Speculoos Ice Cream (S$12.50).

This was indeed a heavenly pairing and we were very pleased with the elegant presentation of the dish. Furthermore, the dish was oh so tasty and satisfying, which only justified any weight gain.

New kid on the block, CATfeine, is nestled in The Hillford along Jalan Jurong Kechil. Contrary to its name, nothing about the cafe’s interior design reminds you of a cat but the idea is there—a cosy environment coupled with relaxing vibes to encourage their guests to lounge around.

Other than specialty tea and coffee, CATfeine’s also offers sweet and savoury bites in the likes of waffles, pies and cakes.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Sit by the floor-to-ceiling glass window which overlooks the busy main road or find yourself an empty table at the cafe. We liked how the tables are not cramped together, which makes it comfortable to have a private conversation with your dining partner.

If there is a must-try at CATfeine, it has to be their waffles. The beautiful presentation alone is enough to impress us and we are glad to share that the taste did not disappoint either.

Out of the few waffle choices on the menu, we decided to go for their popular Sweet Summer (S$15) which came with orange, grapefruit, fresh berries, rich lavender ice cream and crispy waffles that are made upon order.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Raspberry ripple flavoured ice cream atop a toasty and crunchy waffle. Perfect for a hot day—or any day for that matter.

The two-piece fried chicken (S$8.50) was beyond amazing. Marinated and deep-fried to perfection, the chicken was super crispy on the outside but moist and succulent on the inside. An added bonus is that it was not the slightest bit oily.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The sides that came along with it were decent but nothing much to shout about.

We also got the Super Value Meal (S$6.80) which consisted of a deep-fried boneless chicken thigh, white rice and a fried egg with a runny yolk. For what it’s worth, we think that it is a pretty good deal considering the large portion size.

The chicken was deep fried to perfection and the egg was cooked just right. However, we wish the rice could have been more aromatic and flavourful to better complement the other two components.

Waffletown was truly a breath of fresh air. A cosy eatery devoid of the hustle and bustle and pretentious aesthetics, serving comfort food at reasonable prices. We will definitely be back.

Bukit Timah Plaza is an old shopping mall with many hidden gems and our latest discovery is Boyle’s Coffee which is situated beside Rise & Grind cafe. Nothing is over-the-top at Boyle’s Coffee and the most impressive thing you will find there is probably their chic espresso machine.

If you are looking for a change from the usual gimmicky cafes, Boyle’s Coffee is an artisanal cafe where you can settle in and escape with great coffee and some light bites.

The venue boasts a refined and welcoming interior, with dark brown and orange as its primary colours. It is a great place to make like-minded friends over exceptional coffee as guests are expected to share long communal tables.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Visitors can choose to sit in the alfresco area or indoors, but do note that the bistro does not have air conditioning.

Avocado & Poached Egg (S$12.80) is the most popular brunch item on their menu and it is not hard to see why. The presentation alone is enough to win our hearts and it surely is a dream for all who are into food photography.

The poached egg was done to perfection with a ’Boomerang-worthy’, runny egg yolk that spilled out almost immediately. And we loved the generous portion of soft avocado and subtle hint of bitterness from the kale.

The Truffle Scramble Bacon Toast (S$8.80) came with soft, buttery scrambled eggs, crispy bacon sprinkled with truffle salt and toasted brioche.

There are also kid-friendly choices including Waffle Double Delight (S$7.80) and Scramble Toast (S$3.80).

Lorong Kilat is a cosy little street near Beauty World MRT Station on the new Downtown Line in Singapore. The new Downtown Line has made the whole Bukit Timah area very accessible so there is no excuse to not travel to the West for food now!

The whole stretch feels very comforting, like a quaint little neighbourhood street. But during meal hours, the place comes to life. Bars, bakeries, restaurants, cafes and more populate the area, with some very well known names such as Carpenter and Cook, Kim’s Family Restaurant and more.

Here is a Guide to Lorong Kilat’s Restaurants, Cafes & Eateries.

My Cosy Corner is a hole-in-the-wall Peranakan eatery tucked in the corner of Coronation Shopping Plaza, in Bukit Timah.

It is a place where you will feel instantly at home and the staff would occasionally have a friendly conversation with the customers.

Come here for great-tasting Peranakan dishes, local fare and Japanese bento sets.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

There are 18 unique ice cream flavours to choose from. Why not complete these luscious ice cream scoops with a Plain Waffle (S$5.50) or Handmade Choux Pastry Bun (S$3.50)?

While Island Creamery is renowned for its signature mud pies and baked Alaskas, Sugarhaus Singapore has too carved out a niche for itself with its trippy-looking taro-flavoured galaxy cakes (S$7.80 each). These gorgeous galaxy cakes are currently only available on weekends.

The taro sponge cake is layered with velvety buttercream and coated with a beautiful galaxy mirror. Don’t worry, these cakes are 100% edible and you can assure those paranoid eaters that the coating definitely isn’t paint! We know it looks like it – and that’s the novelty of it.

Ming Jia Korean Food is a Korean cuisine eatery run by a middle aged Korean lady or as the Koreans term affectionately as “ahjumma”. This no-frills Korean eatery tucked in a corner of Bukit Timah Plaza looks unassuming from the front, but the place is nothing short of lively during the afternoon lunch hour crowd.

In one look, you will know that Ming Jia Korean Food serves up authentic Korean dishes as the majority of their customers are made up of Koreans and the lady boss enjoys a conversation or two with them.

This place is perfect for students and those working nearby who are looking for an affordable lunch or dinner option.

Most Korean restaurants offer free side dishes to go along with your meals and this is also a practice at Ming Jia Korean Food too. The fresh kimchi helped to induce our appetites before we got started on our main courses and we enjoyed the fluffy egg rolls as well.

The only thing to note is that the side dishes are not free flow.

The Yung Yang Dolsut Bibimbap (S$13.90+) comes with aromatic beef slices and generous portions of vegetables and mushroom. You get a seaweed soup with every order of a Bibimbap.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Salmon Mentai is a true blue favourite amongst locals, but now, imagine having it on purple rice for a healthier alternative too. If any, this dish is so visually arresting! The salmon that is topped on the maki is generously drizzled with mentaiko sauce, then torched to a nice charred finish. Topped off with tobikko, these damned Salmon Mentai maki rolls are more addictive than you think!

The Black Beauty Kurokarei (S$16.80) is a star, and a masterpiece in its own rights. The centrepiece of a perfectly cooked shishamo is wrapped around by the same purple rice, then topped off with a mountain of tobikko.

Look out for the taste of savoury aburi mentai cheesy miso sauce for a truly mouth-watering bite; fans of fish roe and mentai should consider this as their main dish of choice.

We were definitely intrigued by the name ‘Chirashi Cupcake’ (search for #ChirashiCupcake on Instagram to see more photos). So, is it sweet or savoury? Is there actual cupcake and icing in this? To clarify, this gorgeous dish is really a beautifully plated chirashi-don, using purple rice and freshly sliced sashimi.

The rice is dressed with a nice sesame ponzu sauce and sandwiched with some denbu (pink fish flakes) for an extra oomph to the dish. We loved how, in this dish, you could taste the distinct yet subtle nutty flavour of the purple rice, which reminded us of a classic local dessert, Pulut Hitam.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

This is a great choice especially for lunch and it comes at an affordable price of only S$15.80 per bowl.

The Hotate Mentai (S$17.80) maki will be a hit among scallop lovers. It is not hard to love this roll that comes with a crowning glory of fresh scallop slices, complete with an aburi-ed mentai top. Mentai can go no wrong and this maki was an explosion of flavours in our mouths.

Deep-fried radish and wasabi-infused tobikko sits atop this maki to jazz up its look, and gives the maki rolls a distinct crunch.

The Mango Maki (S$14.80) is one lovely tropical treat to try out. Cushioned in the purple rice is a combination of prawn tempura, cucumber and mango. Sweet mangoes are used in the preparation of this item, and the maki roll is served with a dipping sauce of homemade mango dressing.

Ichigo lovers, hands up! The Strawberry/Ichigo Maki (S$14.80) is for you. On the side, you will also be given a serving of the special house-made strawberry dressing to dip your maki rolls into. The hardcore ichigo lovers have the liberty to drizzle the sauce all over, but if you are doing this, we recommend you eat it immediately before the rice gets overly soggy.

And back to the savoury options, and for you spice lovers here – Fiery Salmon (S$16.80) is kick-ass. Generously topped with spice-marinated salmon and crowning each individual maki roll, this maki roll is for those who do not prefer mentai and are after a spicier option instead. For an added crunch, it is also served with lotus chips and deep-fried radish strips.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Vegetarians are not forgotten because Kinsa Sushi has also come up with a Veggie Delight Yasai Maki (S$14.80), wholesomely stuffed with carrot and asparagus strips, and complete with fresh and creamy avocado slices.

Meanwhile, some other highlights from Kinsa Sushi’s regular ala carte menu include the ever-popular Anago sushi that is gorgeously plated with a huge and generous piece of sweet anago.

The yakiudon comes in a really generous portion, but what delighted us greatly was this gyuniku udon that was so flavourful and hearty, we couldn’t stop slurping!

And no one should leave Kinsa Sushi without trying their bestselling Wagyu Don (S$24.90), made using Grade A4 Kagoshima Wagyu with an onsen egg.

As part of our nation’s SG50 celebrations, Kinsa Sushi will be offering a S$5 rebate* for every S$50 spent (before service charge and GST), valid for dine in only for the month of August 2015.

* T&Cs for Kinsa Sushi’s SG50 vouchers

Located just at the first floor of Bukit Timah Plaza, Rise & Grind Coffee Co. occupies a cosy space with a partial alfresco dining area. Opened about three months ago, Rise & Grind Coffee Co. offers a nice and comfortable dining environment together with delicious food and different blends of coffee to choose from.

All mains at Rise & Grind Coffee Co. are well priced under S$20, and they occasional offer lunch deals at a steal. Expect Asian fusion food here, together with a good range of beverage and dessert options.

For a mere S$16, the chef at Rise & Grind will whip up this mouth-watering plate of pasta with a local Asian twist for you. Besides being perfectly al dente, each strand of pasta is coated evenly with the homemade Tom Yum sauce.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Then, there is a comprehensive menu when it comes to dinner. We promise you’ll be so spoilt for choice, but more than that, we’d love for you to spend your night with great comfort food and drinks. It is like dining at a home outside of your home.

Weekend brunches are not confined to cafes. A local eatery off the beaten track sounds lovely too, yes? Especially so when they’ve got some really impressive items. Trust us on this – you’ll be hooked to the first dish that we are going to share.

#1 STUFFED SUPER CEREAL-CRUSTED FRENCH TOAST (BRUNCH ONLY)

Nutella, Nutella and more Nutella in Little Diner‘s version of stuffed French Toast which is served during weekend brunch. At S$16.50, this is a notch above your usual French Toast. Thick brioche with a crunchy cereal crust, lavishly stuffed with everyone’s favourite hazelnut spread, topped with fried bananas and drenched with chocolate sauce. What’s a better word than ‘heavenly’?

Now, you’d be pretty darn sure you need this for your weekend.

#2 ROSARIO’S FRIED RISOTTO BALLS (LUNCH AND DINNER ONLY)

With a melty mozzarella center, tomato coulis, basil pesto and parmesan cheese, the Rosario’s Fried Risotto Balls (S$9.50) is a rustic appetiser that is good for sharing, but we’d prefer to have them to ourselves. It might sound foreign, but they are really just crispy balls with a warm filling of cheesy rice grains, tangy tomato and herbs.

For weekday set lunches, this option is also included as a starter, and it is certainly our favourite thing to order.

#3 CROQUE MADAME (BRUNCH ONLY)

Pretty much like your ham and cheese sandwich, except that Little Diner’s Croque Madame (S$14.50) – only on weekend brunch hours – is like a gigantic deconstructed version.

What seemed like a messy pile actually turned out to be a delightful surprise of toasted brioche, a thick slice of ham and lots of melted cheese, with a copious amount of truffle scented bechamel sauce. Topped with a gorgeous fried egg and some greens, the Croque Madame was wolfed down by our party within minutes.

#4 VERSION 2.0 BAKED MAC & CHEESE ROYALE

Damn, this is one hell of a Mac & Cheese! We are always lamenting about the lack of a good mac & cheese in Singapore, but no more complaints – we’ve found the best. The Version 2.0 Baked Mac & Cheese Royale (S$20.50) is a divine portion that comes with wild enoki and shimeji mushrooms, complete with truffle oil. Let’s just say the fragrance is unparalleled, and unlike most overly cheesy and sick mac & cheese, this rendition is lighter and works as a main on its own.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Not a fan of truffle? Sure. Go for the Old School Baked Mac & Cheese (S$16.50).

#5 THE XXX BACONATOR

Every man needs a badass burger. It is food for the soul! The XXX Baconator (S$21.50) is a fascinating tower of thick and juicy beef patty, melted Swiss cheese, and, behold – crispy bacon strips, espresso bacon jam and bacon aioli. Definitely not for the faint-hearted, but… the more badass the burger, the more we love it.

And by the way, Little Diner has an Empire Burger Challenge. To begin, the Empire Burger (S$50) is a massive burger that is good for 3-4 persons, unless you are incredibly hungry. And if you are, then challenge yourself to finish the Empire Burger plus fries. Do that all in twenty minutes and your burger is free!

#6 PAN ROASTED FILET OF SEA BASS

Something lighter is the Pan Roasted Filet of Sea Bass (S$25). Simple white fish that is lightly pan roasted, and served with seasonal greens and whipped potatoes. The ladies will love this.

Also available as a main in the weekday 2-course lunch sets (S$18.50++), this dish is ideal for those who do not want something overly filling lest you snooze when you get back to the office.

#7 THE “KRUSTY KRAB” BENEDICT (BRUNCH ONLY)

Want to try something different from your usual egg Benedict? Then go for The “Krusty Krab” Benedict (S$19.50) that is available on Little Diner’s weekend brunch menu. Golden crab cake pillow sits atop toasted brioche, accompanied by crispy bacon, grilled asparagus, poached egg, and two sauces – Hollandaise and a hint of chipotle aioli. You know what this means? Explosion of flavours with every bite.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#8 THE BBQ PIGWICH

The BBQ Pigwich (S$18.50) features juicy spiced pulled pork cocooned in a thin wrap with smoky BBQ sauce and fresh pickled onions. Served with a side of homemade coleslaw, this option is also available as a main course in the weekday lunch sets, and the robust flavours of the dish sure work as a perk-me-up.

#9 SMOKED DUCK BREAST SALAD

The salad lovers will enjoy the Smoked Duck Breast Salad (S$13.50). With many slices of smoked duck breast, shaved poached pears, tangy dried cranberries and honey glazed walnuts atop mixed greens, this salad is tossed in a light citrus vinaigrette. Also available as a starter for the weekday lunch sets.

#10 ALL AMERICAN BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN (LUNCH AND DINNER ONLY)

We have nothing but praises for the All American Buttermilk Fried Chicken (S$18.50). It has a preparation time of 20 minutes, but thou shalt always wait patiently for indulgent fried chicken.

Little Diner’s golden fried perfection is indeed a perfect treat for dinner, and guess what? It comes drizzled with maple syrup for more oomph! Served with handcut fries and homemade coleslaw, this is an all-time favourite that we will return to Little Diner again and again for.

Besides the set lunches deals, Little Diner also has several ongoing weekday promotions. On Tuesday, it is burger day at Little Diner. Enjoy all burgers (except the Empire Burger) at S$15++ all day. On Wednesday, one dines for free with three paying diners. On Thursday, get a jug of beer at S$19.50++, a bottle of housepour wine at S$40++, or a bottle of premium wine at S$60++

For those of you who are not familiar, Bar Bar Black Sheep comprises three specialty kitchens of Thai, Western and North Indian with a bar in a casual and laid-back coffee-shop setting. In other words, friends and families can get together to pig out on their favourite cuisine(s) and drinks in the cooler-than-your-kopitiam Bar Bar Black Sheep, and no one needs to go through the hassle of ordering from different stalls and having to dig out coins for their individual payments, given the availability of full table service and acceptance of all major credit and debit cards.

While a host of imitators have sprouted up (some of them even with animal names too), Bar Bar Black Sheep remains the original pioneer of the concept, with 4 convenient locations across the island.

That is exactly what we love. Whether we are feeling like Thai or we need our Butter Chicken fix, or we want both on the table, our cravings will always be satisfied hassle-free. And you know what? If you and your soccer pals are cannot watch matches without some booze and comfort food, then Bar Bar Black Sheep is made for you.

Pocket-friendly prices and a mind-blowing menu of more than 150 food items, here are 10 reasons to fall in love with Bar Bar Black Sheep’s flagship outlet at Cluny Court.

1. THE LARGEST AND NEWEST BAR BAR BLACK SHEEP OUTLET

The original Bukit Timah outlet at Cherry Avenue took the local food scene by storm with its casual and chill-out coffee shop vibe, followed by the equally popular Robertson Quay and Tanjong Katong outlets.

Bar Bar Black Sheep’s flagship outlet at Cluny Court, however, is the one that you should check out. Relocated from Boat Quay 1.5 years ago and spanning over 3000 sq ft, it is not only the largest shop among the four outlets, but also the only Bar Bar Black Sheep with a large air-conditioned indoor seating area. For those who prefer to sit at the outdoor alfresco deck, the cluny court outlet comes with retractable canopies, so not to worry even if it rains. Parking is also a breeze, with direct access to the carpark at Cluny Court.

2. MORE THAN 150 ITEMS ON THE MENU TO CHOOSE FROM

The team of chefs at Bar Bar Black Sheep’s specialty kitchens come from Thailand, India and renowned local European bistros, all rich in experience and present only the best.

Bar Bar Black Sheep at Cluny Court has the most comprehensive food & drinks (read point no. 6) menu among the four outlets. There are more than 150 dishes on the menu to choose from, and that’s just crazily amazing! The amazing value and variety never goes out of fashion, keeping regulars coming back for more.

The Northern Indian menu alone features 60 dishes. Besides the classic Indian dishes like Chicken Tandoori, Fish Tikka, Butter Chicken, Naan, and Briyani, there is also an impressive selection of vegetarian dishes. And please do not leave without trying the signature Butter Chicken. Read on; we’ve even dedicated a point to the legendary dish.

If you are craving for Western food, you will face the situation of having to choose from burgers, pastas, sandwiches, as well as mains like Char Grilled Chicken (S$19.90), and Beer Battered Fish & Chips (S$16.90). Yes, we know it is not easy to choose only one. On weekends (till 3pm), look forward to Egg Benedict (S$8.90) and Full English Breakfast (S$16.90). And we kid you not when we say that the Hollandaise Sauce is rather addictive!

3. BAR BAR BLACK SHEEP AT CLUNY COURT IS THE ONLY OUTLET THAT DISHES OUT LOCAL DELICACIES

Something that not many people know is that Bar Bar Black Sheep at Cluny Court also serves excellent local food – in fact, it is the only outlet where you can find popular local dishes on the menu.

While Mee Rebus (S$10.90), Sweet & Sour Pork (S$12.90), and Curry Chicken with Rice (S$10.90) are all worth trying, the standout dish for us is the Nasi Lemak (S$12.90). It combines fragrant rice, peanuts, anchovies, egg, chicken wing, and a super addictive sambal chilli. Local delight at its best, we’d say.

4. FULL TABLE SERVICE WITH NO GST & SERVICE CHARGE

While the three kitchens are independently managed, Bar Bar Black Sheep has a centralised payment system which accepts cash and credit card. You can order your food from the wait staff with full table service; pay all together, and there is no GST and service charge.

5. AFFORDABLE, WELL-PRICED COMFORT FOOD

We all want to pledge our loyalty to somewhere that dishes out consistently good food that does not break our banks. And that is Bar Bar Black Sheep – a place that we can return to again and again. Most of the dishes are priced below S$20. Huge menu that we can go every day and order different dishes and not repeat for 3 months, quality tastes and friendly prices = we love you, Bar Bar Black Sheep.

6. BAR WITH AN EXTENSIVE DRINK LIST

Cocktails, champagne, red wines, white wines, craft beers, and draught, Bar Bar Black Sheep at Cluny Court also carries the most extensive drink menu among the four outlets. Now, at these prices, bring on the booze!

7. TO-DIE-FOR BUTTER CHICKEN

Creamy and smooth paste, with generous chunks of chicken; if we could only order one dish, it would be the Butter Chicken from the North Indian kitchen. How can anything be so heavenly, and how does the taste linger in our mouths even after days is beyond us…

8. EVERYTHING FROM THE KITCHEN IS MADE FRESHLY

From the curries to the sauces, everything from the kitchens is made fresh daily. The Hollandaise Sauce on your Eggs Ben, the sambal chili from the Nasi Lemak, the garlic naan that you eat with your Butter Chicken… Don’t we all love such a dedicated kitchen?

I have written previously that Korean-style fried chicken is one of my favourite guilty indulgences, and I am always on the lookout to try new places. If you are also a fan of Korean fried chicken, add Woori Nara Korean Restaurant to your list.

I have walked past Woori Nara many times, and the reason why it took me so long to come here is because I always end up going to my favourite Kim’s Family Restaurant, which is located along the same stretch at Lorong Kilat.

Woori Nara specialises in Korean chicken, and they offer four different flavours – original, soy, garlic, and its signature ‘yum yum’ sauce – on the menu. First-timers should go for the Sampler (S$20) – a mixture of original, yum yum and soy fried chicken. I won’t say that Woori Nara has the best Korean fried chicken in Singapore, but it does a decent rendition.

Although the Korean fried chicken is the highlight, some of the dishes also deserve equal attention. You can also find classic Korean dishes such as Grilled Pork Belly (S$35), Stone Pot Bibimbap (S$17), and Seafood & Kimchi Pancake (S$15). We also thoroughly enjoyed the Grilled Mackerel (S$17). The fish was fresh, and simply prepared. The Soybean Paste Soup (S$17), on the other hand, was mediocre and slightly over-priced. We would rather go for the Ginseng Chicken Soup (S$20).

All in all, the food at Woori Nara is decent, and if you are staying in the area, this is certainly a spot where you can come for some snacks and drinks.
