Plaza Brasserie at PARKROYAL on Beach Road wows us again in 2017 with their signature Ultimate Crab Feast. With an extensive spread of crab delights exquisitely curated by Executive Chef Ken Ang and his team, this year’s run sees new flavours (again) and will be bigger than before.

A total of seven different main crab dishes will be available in the buffet line-up. Chef Ken vows to ensure that every crab flavour that he puts on the table is of remarkable quality and stellar flavours that will please the crowd, so it is a game of quality over quantity.

Eating crabs a la carte is no fun. Limited by the portion before you, it is not unusual to find yourself wishing you had more to dig into. That’s why crab buffets are always an indulgence.

Make your way down to the Plaza Brasserie from 09 April 2017 until 28 June 2017 and feast on your favourite crabs at a reasonable price of S$68++ per adult and S$41++ per child, only available during dinner from Sundays to Wednesdays.

SALTED EGG CRAB

While it seems like Salted Egg Crab is not a difficult dish to perfect, you would be surprised that some chefs can actually screw it up—too runny or overly chunky sauces are just some common scenarios. Executive Chef Ken has perfected the richest and creamiest golden yellow sauce that coats each piece of crab perfectly.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

But trust our friend Executive Chef Ken to perfect the richest and creamiest golden yellow sauce which coats every piece of crab perfectly. We can never ever get sick of his salted egg crab, really.

It is little wonder this flavour stays in every year’s Ultimate Crab Feast run. The crowd would be displeased if Chef Ken removes this!

SAMBAL PETAI CRAB

Sambai Petai Crab is not something you see often. You have your chilli and pepper crabs but never tossed in sambal and petai beans!

The irresistible combination of robust sambal and slightly bitter petai beans is one that may not be as popular, but is surely one that the chefs at Plaza Brasserie have mastered and are confident you would love. The rich flavours sure complement the slightly sweet Sri Lankan mud crab flesh really well, and this new flavour certainly has our approval.

GINGER HUA TIOW CRAB

Hua Tiow is a Chinese cooking wine that adds so much flavour to anything that it is cooked with.

We have fresh crabs steamed with ginger and Hua Tiow wine as part of the buffet line-up. The fragrance is unparalleled and every bite is a familiar comfort of good ol’ Chinese food. Well, many Chinese dishes are cooked with similar flavours so it definitely reminds us of home. If you like something lighter, this would be perfect for you.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Chef Jackson and team are so experienced in dealing with meats that they know exactly the ideal temperatures to bring out the best flavours while retaining the meat’s juices and tenderness.

With the kind of quality we get here, it is surely bang for our buck.

When night falls, be wowed by the additional dishes such as Baked Fillet Salmon Brioche with Mushroom Ragout and Spinach & Lemon Yogurt Roast, Pork Belly and also, Roast Duck. Yes, these are on top of what hams and turkeys.

Meat feast, you say?

ALL SORTS OF WONDERFUL COOKED DISHES

The buffet line-up also has a rotation of cooked food dishes daily, and here’s what you can expect on each of those days. For lunch, you get -

Monday: Pasta in Choice of Sauce
Tuesday: Fried Hokkien Noodles
Wednesday: Risotto
Thursday: Fried Carrot Cake
Friday, Saturday & Sunday: Oyster Omelette

And for dinner, you can expect a slightly similar menu of -

Monday: Pasta in Choice of Sauces
Tuesday: Pan Fried Teriyaki Salmon
Wednesday: Risotto or Spaghetti
Thursday: Fried Carrot Cake
Friday, Saturday & Sunday: Oyster Omelette

The dishes have a well-balanced range of both local tastes and also international flavours.

We are especially excited that dishes such as Oyster Omelette and Fried Carrot Cake are being offered as they are definitely some of the most well-loved dishes by Singaporeans, and if you are hosting overseas friends, they would be a fantastic showcase of our local delights!

LOCAL FLAVOURS THAT TUG OUR HEARTSTRINGS

Christmas may sometimes mean only Western-style roasts meats and seafood offerings, but Plaza Brasserie’s buffet spread will break that tradition and also offer a variety of local-inspired dishes to feed those with strong Asian roots – think Braised Sliced Pork Belly with Star Anise, Wok Honey Chicken with Onion & Green Pepper and Steamed Whitefish with Light Soya Sauce & Spring Onion.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

When dinner comes, expect Wok-fried Prawns with Salted Egg, Spring Onion & Chilli Black Mussel with Black Bean Sauce, and Crispy Soft Shell Crabs with Curry Leaves.

As you can tell, Chef Jackson has a penchant for using local spices and flavours in his cooking and these are dishes that will be nothing short of comforting.

SPICY SICHUAN PORK KNUCKLE

Something atypical of Christmas to look out for is the Spicy Sichuan Pork Knuckle at Chinese restaurant Si Chuan Dou Hua.

This is not part of the buffet line-up, but this creation by the team at Si Chuan Dou Hua restaurant is a star. You may order it at S$68++ for a portion of this mouth-watering pork knuckle doused in fiery Sichuan chilli and peppercorn that it is seasoned and roasted with. Its perfectly crisp skin houses juicy and tender meat that is extremely satisfying.

Plaza Brasserie at PARKROYAL On Beach Road is bringing back The Ultimate Crab Feast Buffet from 8 June to 23 August 2015!

Do we hear screams and cries of excitement already? As Singaporeans, we can never get enough of crabs, can we? This annual crab buffet is totally a dream come true for all of us crab lovers.

Last year, it was such a sell-out that reservations were filled up quicker than you can spell ‘crabs’. We know many of you were disappointed, we really do. This year, the buffet will run for more than two months, and there will be lunch seatings on Sundays too.

Now, time to welcome the idea of free-flow of crabs cooked in 8 tantalizing ways, and be prepared for a taste of heaven at Plaza Brasserie at PARKROYAL On Beach Road with The Ultimate Crab Feast Buffet. Here are some of the cooking styles you can expect:

CHILLI CRAB WITH DEEP-FRIED MANTOU

Let’s jus say The Ultimate Crab Feast Buffet needs only the most befitting flavours, and chilli crab it shall be. Dubbed as the quintessential Singapore food, this local favourite will win the hearts of everyone. Together with deep-fried mantou that is also free flow, we are in heaven.

CEREAL CRAB

There may be all sorts of cooking methods for crabs, but some things are ever classic and nothing’s gonna change our love for them. Like cereal crab. Sweet, crispy cereal stir-fried with chilli padi, bringing out the sweetness of fresh crabs; very addictive, and you have been warned.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

SALTED EGG YOLK CRAB

We are not the only ones who are obsessed, right? Don’t lie if you are going to say you are not obsessed. We know you are. The chefs at Plaza Brasserie told us this was the most popular style last year, and they are definitely including this again for this year’s line-up. Yay to salted egg yolk crab! The creamy goodness will never fail us!

BLACK PEPPER CRAB

Oh, come on! Who says no to black pepper crabs?! Even Gordon Ramsay loves the Singapore-style black pepper crab, and we are pretty darn sure Plaza Brasserie’s version will impress him too.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

WHITE PEPPER CRAB

How about a change? Pepper-anything for crabs is always good, and white pepper is as good as, if not better than black pepper crab. No, really. We actually prefer this rendition because it is spicier and more robust in flavour.

CURRY CRAB

Quite unforgettable and very lethal, the curry crab is also a crowd’s favourite and the chefs are honestly so good at this. The main ingredients that go into the making of the curry crab are lemon grass, curry powder, red chilli and coconut milk. The end result? You have to try it for yourself to believe how darn delicious curry can get.

STEAMED CRAB WITH DANG GUI

Herbal broths are ever so comforting. This version with angelica herb (dang gui) has proven its popularity from last year’s buffet. While the herb has a slight bitterness, when steamed and simmered with the crab, the sweetness of the crab actually slices through the bitterness, producing a very balanced flavoured herbal broth.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

CRAB WITH HONEY ROCK SUGAR *NEW*

Introducing an all-new flavour – the Crab with Honey Rock Sugar. The chefs are very proud of this creation, and if our tummies could nod in agreement… So anyway, this version is similar to marmite crabs, but with a more delicate sweetness that does not overpower the freshness of the crab flesh. We really like it a lot and we are sure you would too!

The Ultimate Crab Feast is complemented with a delicious spread of local favourites and Asian cuisine from the gourmet capitals in our Best of Asia spread. It is most definitely value-for-money, because you get to eat your fill from all the crabs and regular buffet spread.

We are not accountable if you drool all over your keyboard while reading this. And, the seatings are limited, and the tables fill up really quickly. So make your reservations fast; you have been warned.

The Ultimate Crab Feast
8 June to 23 August 2015
Buffet Dinner (Daily), 6pm to 10:00pm
Buffet Lunch (Sunday), 12pm to 2:30pm

*All photos used in this post are for illustration purposes only.

One of the most underrated restaurants in town happens to be one that we really love for many reasons – Plaza Brasserie at PARKROYAL on Beach Road. For one, we grew up with the buffet spread that our parents have always loved, and every return brings about fond memories of the good times with our loved ones.

It may not be the sexiest place to date, but we still go back to Plaza Brasserie whenever we need a trusty option that will never fail us. The chefs are like good friends to us, and we share the same gourmet ideals and philosophies. Some days, you just need to do away with all frills and fads, and let the true essence of culinary blow you away.

We love to bring our families to Plaza Brasserie for a sense of familiarity, and celebrating Chinese New Year there sounds like an awesome idea. To rejoice in the festivity, the team at Plaza Brasserie is all ready to impress. With a determination to pamper their regulars with that coveted familiarity, the chefs are also introducing unique creations for some surprises, and it includes two lamb dishes in the Prosperity Feast. Well, it is the year of the Goat, right?

We had the privilege to have a preview of the feast, and here are some of the highlights of the Chinese New Year Buffet at Plaza Brasserie that you must not miss out on:

HAINANESE LAMB STEW WITH HERBS

Among the two lamb dishes that the chefs have come up with for Plaza Brasserie’s Prosperity Feast, the authentic Hainanese Lamb Stew with Herbs is a bowl of piping hot goodness that bubbles with flavours and textures. As Chinese, we love our soups, and there are endless possibilities as long as you have your hands on premium ingredients.

So at Plaza Brasserie, let’s go herbal. And lamb. Who would have thought that these two would go so well together? The blend of bitterness and fragrance from the herbs mixture masks the gaminess of the lamb, and the end result is a beautifully smooth soup that is best to whet your appetite and to kickstart your meal.

LAMB SIEW MAI

The Lamb Siew Mai is another standout dish. Once again, who would have thought that siew mai can be made with lamb meat? And that is precisely why we love the chefs at Plaza Brasserie. They love to reinvent familiar household dishes, without steering them too far away from their origins, yet still enough to surprise the taste buds.

Now, did we just hear ‘free flow lamb siew mai’?

BOSTON LOBSTER IN WHITE PEPPER SAUCE

Boston Lobster slathered with white pepper sauce is just about one of the best things we’ve tasted at Plaza Brasserie. We have been so hooked since, and never stopped thinking about it. Every paying adult diner will enjoy a half portion (about 250g) for dinner, and special guests who go for lunches on 19th and 20th Feb will get a half portion too.

MINI BROWN RICE BALLS WITH MINCED PORK FILLING

Not to worry if you are not a fan of lamb. Because we’ve got the highly addictive Mini Brown Rice Balls with minced pork filling. Sounds a little healthy at first, but we changed our minds when we popped the first rice ball in; the explosion of sweetness is our mouths was unbelievable and we could not stop eating. How can something so simple and unassuming taste so out of the world?!

FRUITFUL YUSHENG

Plaza Brasserie has given yusheng a twist. Instead of the usual yusheng ingredients, it has incorporated fruits – like tangerine, peach, rock melon, pineapple and green mango – to the popular Chinese New Year dish that will suit everyone in the family. Its sweet fruitiness is paired with the homemade plum sauce, and a toss would not only symbolise good luck and prosperity, but good health too!

By the way, we have affectionately nicknamed yusheng as the ‘Chinese salad’, but this version takes the cake. It is literally a pile of goodness!

EIGHT TREASURE DUCKS

A beautiful duck that comes complete with generous stuffing of chestnuts, ginko nuts and mushrooms. This may not be the most photogenic item, but it is surely a hearty dish and it is easy to eat. Yay to boneless ducks!

CHEF’S ‘LIVE’ COOKING STATION

One of the things that we always look forward to when dining at Plaza Brasserie is the Chef’s ‘live’ cooking stations. From local fare like Fried Oyster Omelette, Prawn Mee Soup, Laksa, to the Indian corner where the prata man flips your dough right before your eyes – there are lots of actions going on and all around you. The ‘live’ cooking stations rotate regularly, so there is always a surprise element, and definitely something to please.

FESTIVE SWEETS AND GOODIES

So we’ve got the pineapple tartlets, almond cookies, walnut cookies, love letters and lotus root candies. The usual suspects, of course, and what is Chinese New Year without them? All baked in-house, and we’d say to not miss out on the pineapple tartlets and almond cookies!

BEST OF ASIA BUFFET SPREAD

Plaza Brasserie is best known for its “Best of Asia” buffet lineup. There is no better time than the Chinese New Year period to treat yourself and your loved ones.

We’ve tried many turkeys for Christmas this year, but Plaza Brasserie’s rendition is hands down the best that we’ve had in Singapore. Ever since we sampled Executive Chef Jackson’s and Executive Sous Chef Ken’s tantalising roasts during For The Love of Roasts Buffet - PARKROYAL on Beach Road’s inaugural presentation of a buffet that is centered around tantalising roasts and exotic meats – we have no doubt that the duo can cook their meat really well.

So we were really excited to try their Christmas Buffet because of the various meats that are part of the Christmas lineup. The highlight is without a doubt the aforementioned traditional roast turkey, but equally good is the Hungarian Mangalica Pork – making its debut at Plaza Brasserie this year. Also, you can get two Boston Lobsters (weighing 500g each) at just S$38++ during the festive promotion every day from 12 to 31 Dec 2014.

We share with you the various meats that you cannot miss the world for, and yes, they are available for takeaways too. Oh, have you seen strawberry snowmen too? Too cute to be true, but we are all prey to such Instagram-worthy desserts, isn’t it?

Here are the reasons to celebrate Christmas at Plaza Brasserie, PARKROYAL on Beach Road! Have a very merry Christmas!

#1 THE BEST ROAST TURKEY WE’VE HAD FOR CHRISTMAS IN SINGAPORE THIS YEAR

The Traditional Roast Turkey stuffed with Sausage Meat, chestnut and mushroom is handled with complete tender loving care. The result of the chefs’ understanding of meat treatment and immaculate grasp of temperatures is an extremely moist and tender turkey, with its sweetness still retained, and juicy with every bite. And you would know that ‘moist’ and ‘tender’ are not words that are frequently apt to describe turkey. You can just imagine how our lives were changed since the first bite.

But the turkey is not the only highlight, of course. Also starring in the Plaza Brasserie’s Christmas Buffet is the Hungarian Mangalica Pork Roast.

#2 THE TO-DIE-FOR HUNGARIAN MANGALICA PORK ROAST – THE ‘KOBE BEEF’ OF PORK

The Mangalitsa pig, for the uninitiated, is one of the oldest European breeds and after nearly facing extinction; it has been making a surprising but definitely welcoming comeback in high-end restaurants. Prized for its fatty and well-marbled meat, it is the king of the pigs – the kobe beef of pork, if we must.

Plaza Brasserie will be serving the Hungarian Mangalica Pork during its Festive and Christmas Buffets in the month of December! The prized pork truly lives up to its name, and the chefs’ skills in preparation no less. You may wonder if any special seasoning went in to complement the pork, but no, it is purely the brilliant controlling of temperatures and heat, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. And voila, you’ve got a to-die-for dish that is up on the carving station. All you can eat, so you know what to do, right?

#3 GET TWO BOSTON LOBSTERS (500G EACH) AT A CRAZY PRICE OF S$38++

The lobster roll trend has hit our shores this year, and while we love lobsters, it can be quite a hit – literally – on our wallets. Most places that serve lobster rolls in Singapore are charging at least S$30 for a roll that comes with a measly 100g of lobster meat. If you want one that comes with 500g of meat, be prepared to pay at least S$45 to S$50.

What if we tell you that you can get TWO Boston lobsters (weighing 500g each) at a ridiculously unbelievable price of S$38++? We are not kidding. When you go for Plaza Brasserie’s Christmas Dinner Buffet, you can do an optional top-up for a serving of two Boston lobsters that are baked ala minute and drizzled with two sauce choices – black pepper, or onions with white pepper. S$38++ for two Boston lobsters is a steal and we still cannot get over how good a deal this is.

This promotion is available at Plaza Brasserie’s Christmas Dinner Buffet every day from 12 Dec 2014 to 1 Jan 2015.

#4 HONEY GLAZED HAM WITH PINEAPPLE AND CRANBERRY SAUCE

So we are lovers of honey glazed hams; well, what are Christmases without these porky goodness? Plaza Brasserie’s version is nothing overly greasy or fatty. It is not sickly salty too, so you won’t have to feel bad about eating that additional slice.

Dunk the thick chunk into the homemade pineapple or cranberry sauce, because happiness can be so simple.

#5 INSTAGRAM THIS – STRAWBERRY SNOWMEN

Because a photo speaks a thousand words, right? Grab your cameras, head to the dessert section, and shoot your own version. We promise it will get you so many likes.

#6 PARKROYAL ON BEACH ROAD’S FIRST EVER CHRISTMAS DAY BRUNCH AT THE BALLROOMS

This year, PARKROYAL on Beach Road will be having its first ever Christmas Day Brunch at The Ballrooms – the hotel’s latest function space. Decked with glittery chandeliers, the hall has a modern and elegant setting. The kids will get their own Kid’s Zone in the adjacent Sky Ballroom which comes with a mini kid’s buffet. In addition, there will be a cupcake decorating competition for children from 4 to 12 years old.

#7 AND MANY MORE FOR CHRISTMAS TAKEAWAYS

So we feast at both sides – at home, and in restaurants, right? Santa will approve the idea, and even more so if you do your takeaways from Plaza Brasserie (available from 12 Dec 2014 to 1 Jan 2015). Sure, takeaway options are aplenty, but we trust that one buffet session alone at Plaza Brasserie won’t suffice. How often do we get flavourful meats and awesome turkeys? Certainly not every day, and that is why we need to “stock up” for supper.

Well, the idea of watching soccer and eating Roast Mangalica Pork is brilliant, yes? The Roast Mangalica Pork Collar Butt is available at S$88 for a 1.5kg serving. And how about the best Roast Turkey (S$108/4kg) too? If you need your beef fix, then the Premium Roast Beef ($138/1kg) is for you. Some Honey Baked Ham ($78/1.5kg) too, perhaps?

And there is always room for desserts. If you want a classic log cake, you have the Chocolate/Vanilla Christmas Log Cake (S$58/1kg) that is also part of the takeaway galore.

Satisfy the carnivore in you at PARKROYAL on Beach Road from 5 September to 26 October 2014 at Plaza Brasserie’s For The Love of Roasts buffet dinner (adult S$65++, child S$39++) which features an all-you-can-eat buffet spread of premium meats. The highlights include Wagyu D-Rump Roast, 200-day Grain-fed Prime Ribs, Angus Beef Tenderloin Roast, Roast Pork Collar as well as exotic meats like Braised Kangaroo Tail, and Braised Ox Tongue… We bet you are just as excited as we are!

For The Love of Roasts is Plaza Brasserie at PARKROYAL On Beach Road’s inaugural presentation of a buffet that is centered around tantalising roasts and exotic meats, and the chefs have definitely gone all out to impress with their best offerings that will feed a king.

[ GIVEAWAY ] We are also giving away 3 pairs of weekday buffet dining vouchers to retreat to an evening of feasting at For The Love of Roasts buffet. Leave a comment below, and share this post on your Facebook timeline to win. More details on the giveaway at the end of this post.

Whenever we go for buffets, we always stay away from the roast section. Well, simply because most of the time, the roasts are over-cooked, dry and nothing near appetising at all. To be honest, we were apprehensive about Plaza Brasserie’s For The Love of Roasts. prior to stepping in. But our worries were eased, and we really could not be more pleased.

The chefs have stayed true to their cooking philosophy – all the roasts and meats are superbly cooked to medium rare. Every slab of meat is prepared to the ideal doneness, with precise control of the temperature and roasting time (chefs’ secret here), and there was not an item that disappointed. Steaks are usually best prepared medium rare, but if you cannot take the sight of red patches in your meat, the chefs will be more than happy to roast your portion till your preferred doneness; your request is their command.

The star of the show is without a doubt the Wagyu D-Rump Roast. In all honesty, we have no idea how Plaza Brasserie manages its food cost by serving wagyu beef in a buffet. While wagyu d-rump is not the most expensive nor the best well-marbled wagyu, it is undisputedly a fine piece of meat and this alone is reason enough to try the buffet. You get to eat all you can here. Yes, you get the idea that you are on your way to heaven.

Pace yourself with the Wagyu D-Rump Roast though, because you would want to save room for the 200-day Grain-fed Prime Ribs and Angus Beef Tenderloin Roast. What more can you ask for when you get such a mouth-watering selection of roast?

It is not every day that you get to try kangaroo meat in Singapore, and if you are adventurous enough, we dare you to try the Braised Kangaroo Tail which is slow cooked for five hours. And by the way, they do not come cheap too even if you can even find them at regular restaurants, so we’d say just go for it! For bone marrow lovers, you will be thrilled to know that you are in for unlimited Baked Bone Marrow for dinner, too.

Continue your feast with Roast Lamb, dry-cured Reserva Ham, Sliced Air-dried Beef, Roast Pork Collar, Kurobuta Pork Sausages and Guinness Beef & Pork Sausages. Alas! We kid you not when we said that the chefs have prepared a lot of meat.

The condiments for the roasts are equally mind-blowing. Choose from béarnaise, black pepper sauce, chilli sauce, green peppercorn sauce, horseradish, hotdog relish, mango chutney, mint jelly, mushroom sauce, mustard, plum sauce, tabasco, thyme jus, and Worcester sauce.

There are also various Chef’s ‘Live’ Cooking Stations that offer Plaza Brasserie’s signature dishes. Our favourite is the Indian food station where you can get really good roti prata – plus free shows by the Indian prata man who flips your dough right before your eyes. This time round, Plaza Brasserie is also having a Risotto Station where the chef will cook Risotto with Mushroom & Pumpkin in summer truffle oil ala minute.

Regulars to Plaza Brasserie will also know to look forward to home-cooked Asian dishes from the signature “Best of Asia” buffet. So much food, so little stomach space.

For a change of taste, head over to the dessert buffet and try Agar Agar, Durian Crepe, Durian Paste, Bubur Cha Cha, Bubur Terigu, Pulat Hitam and Tau Suan!

For The Love of Roasts (S$65++ for adult, and S$39++ for child) is available during dinner buffet (6pm – 10.30pm daily) from 5 September to 26 October 2014. ANZ, CIMB Bank, DBS, Diners Club, HSBC, Maybank, NTUC and OCBC cardholders get to enjoy 15% savings for the buffet dinner, while UOB cardholders get 15% off for the total bill.

There are days when we feel nostalgic and really crave food that connect us to our roots. They are food that rejuvenates our souls, that remind us of cultures and traditions that we grew up with, that we will never get sick of.

Yet, revelation always brings us new things and trends, and we lose sight of some of the familiarity along the way. We are then taught to appreciate and cherish, and reminisce the good things that tug at our heartstrings. It can be as simple as Braised Pig’s Trotter with Vermicelli, or a plate of celebratory Yi Bua. And these old fashion stay gold forever.

Sometimes, we are lost for words when we sink our teeth into these nostalgic flavours. But it is quite simply the best kind of feeling when we bite into our favourite food from the past – something that we loved as a child, so pure and unadulterated.

This August, let us all rekindle the good ol’ times as Plaza Brasserie at PARKROYAL on Beach Road brings back all our classic favourites from the different dialects. Celebrate with Flavours of Old Singapore, and treat yourself to what might possibly be the most heart-warming buffet.

THE STARTING POINT

Whet your appetite with starters like Stuffed You Tiao with Seafood Paste, Green Mango Salad and Asian Rojak. Cheese lovers have a cheese board to look out for, and no one says no to a free flow of Brie.

If you need your cold seafood, stuff yourself silly with Tiger Prawns and Flower Crabs. But we suggest leaving some space for some Maki and Roti Prata – yes, you have a live station and everyone loves an Indian Prata man flipping our dough before our eyes. Don’t forget your curry!

TAKE A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE

Now, this is tricky. Which to start first?

There is the Cantonese Braised Chicken Wings with Fermented Red Beancurd, and the Hokkiens will be delighted to know that Kan Chia Mee (“Rickshaw Noodles”) is available at the noodle counter on selective nights. Oh, what memories! Our parents would remember paying ten cents for a bowl of these noodles, and that was considered an occasional indulgence. Now, eat your fill as you relive childhood memories with those you hold dear to your heart.

We would love to tell you about just how much we love the Steamed Sea Bass. Plaza Brasserie dishes up a lovely rendition of what we know as comfort food – the flesh is sweet and steamed with precision to promise a full-bodied flavour.

Another dish to keep your eyes peeled on is the Stir-fried Beef with Pineapple. Rejoice, Hainanese! The fuss-free dish that is so common among this dialect group is one highlight of the buffet, and boy, was it so well-executed! Stir-fried tender beef with pineapple slices that the Hainanese frequently use in their cooking; it is almost impossible to find this classic Hainanese dish anywhere else.

What else excites you? How about some Teochew Oyster Omelette? Or a portion of Hakka Stir-fried Abacus Seeds? We are pretty sure the latter is a popular favourite among many generations. Otherwise, you have your usual local delights like Assorted Satay and Laksa – all on rotation basis.

Another Teochew mainstay is the Crystal Dumplings, with both sweet and savoury options. The sweet one comes in the form of mochi-like balls with red bean paste, while the savoury ones are dumplings with turnip filling. And they both boast a homemade clear skin that is not overly gooey and sticky, and adds a complementary texture to the generous fillings.

Many more mains to discover, but we will not spoil your surprise too much, except to tell you that you cannot go without trying the Braised Pig’s Trotters with Vermicelli.

SWEET SECRETS OF THE PAST

One good advice from us is to allocate half your stomach’s capacity for desserts and snacks, because there is a lot to stuff yourself silly with! Most of them are on rotation basis, but we promise there will be something you’d find familiar.

We really loved the Kacang Putih (Indian mixed nuts) counter, just like how it used to be when we were kids and would pester our parents for a few cents whenever we see the Kacang Putih man in our neighbourhood. As trends evolved, the existence of Kacang Putih stalls is threatened and we can hardly fix our cravings these days. So while you may think it is just nuts, think again. And we love Flavours of Old Singapore for bringing this back.

Note: the assorted nuts will be served altogether in a gunny sack, diners will scoop their individual portions into a bowl.

Remember Kueh Tutu too? Pasar malam (a popular street market that sells a variety of snacks, toys, clothes and random furniture – usually found in residential areas) trips would not be complete without a pack of this traditional Singaporean delicacy. Fluffy cake-like snack that is made of rice flour and steamed with peanut or shredded coconut filling, this is ever satisfying.

If you were a kid who frequented humble neighbourhood bakeries, you would remember pointing out to those ever pretty creamed cake slices. Simple vanilla chiffon cake lusciously covered in butter cream – exactly what our hearts need.

Also among our favourites is the Hainanese Yi Bua, a celebratory dessert that was commonly found in special occasions like weddings and baby showers. To refresh your memory, Yi Bua is a glutinous coconut rice cake. Wrapped with banana leaves, these cakes contain a decadent filling of shredded coconut, brown sugar and ground peanut. Simply divine!

There are definitely more to pick from, like the Burbur Terigu, Putu Mayam and Tang Yuan. And it is indeed one party we would love to be a part of.

Black pepper crab. Salted egg yolk crab. Curry crab. Chilli crab. Marmite crab. Crab kut teh. Wait, are we done with the list? Not quite, apparently. And you know what this means? It is time to party with crabs!

The annual crab feast at PARKROYAL on Beach Road is here again from 13 June till 27 July 2014, and it just gets better each year.

With 27 crab dishes including 14 whole crabs prepared in different styles, on top of everyone’s favourite seafood station, chefs preparing their speciality dishes ala minute, and a Best of Asia buffet spread – Plaza Brasserie presents its highly anticipated The Ultimate Crab Feast buffet dinner (adult S$65++. child S$39++). Yes, we can already feel your excitement!

We don’t know many people who would say no to free-flow of quality crabs, but we know this is one dinner you must not miss. Here are the highlights from The Ultimate Crab Feast by Plaza Brasserie at PARKROYAL on Beach Road.

We love anything salted egg yolk, so we were stoked to know that that our favourite Salted Egg Crab is one of the dishes on the menu. It was done just the way we like it – the crabs were bursting with salted egg yolk goodness, and we polished off every bit of the sauce.

Next thing we fell in love with was the Butter Crab. Creamy, rich and, well, very buttery. And very good.

A unique creation by the chefs at Plaza Brasserie, the Crab Kut Teh is cooked in a rich broth that is prepared with pork bones and bak kut teh spices. We can never say no to good soups.

We really cannot think of many things that can be better than cereal crab. Sweet flesh covered in a copious amount of crisp and sweet cereal, finished with a touch of spice from chilli padi. Plaza Brasserie’s rendition of the cereal crab comes with a hint of salted egg yolk, too.

The Marmite Crabs here are cooked with maltose, honey, chilli and tomato sauce, giving it a slightly sweet and spicy flavour.

If you love Peranakan food, you will find yourself in the good hands of the Nonya crab. Quite a change from the usual cooking styles, yes?

After trying the Curry Crab, your palate will not forget the lethal combination of curry powder, lemongrass, coconut milk and red chilli.

And your mother would tell you that the Steamed Crab with Dang Gui is good for you. Yes, eat more! It is packed with sliced Angelica Sinensis – also known as dang gui, a medicinal herb that is used for treating various ailments – and lots of wolfberries, which is one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits.

And what’s a crab buffet without Singapore’s iconic Chilli Crab? Don’t forget to dip your mantous (deep fried buns) in the addictive sauce! We also suggest using the mantous to mop up the sauces of the other crabs like salted egg yolk, butter, and marmite.

Chilli crab may be the poster boy for Singapore, but what most locals truly love is Black Pepper Crab. And what is a crab party without Black Pepper Crab? Have them here at Plaza Brasserie, and eat to your heart’s content!

Last but not the least, try the the ‘XO’ Crab. Not for the faint-hearted, though!

After you are done with one round of crabs, you are probably too stuffed to eat anything else. But it is just the start of the show. From the seafood counter, you can get a selection of the freshest seafood – expect tiger prawns, flower crabs, green mussels, scallops, spanner crabs, and snow crabs.

Move on to the appetisers. Noteworthy dishes include crab cake with mushroom and onion, crab meat ball with potato, crab meat tartlet, crab meat chawanmushi, spicy crab meat salad, and breaded crab claws. Yes, crab everything. Your tummies will be so pleased.

The buffet lineup also features various Chef’s ‘Live’ Cooking Stations which rotate every day so that regulars always have something to look forward to. You won’t want to miss the signature crepe station with durian mousse. Over at the Noodle Station, it can be anything from laksa, udon, prawn noodle, or lor mee. There will definitely be something for every palate.

For those who have been to the buffet at Plaza Brasserie, you will know that one of the highlights is the roti prata station. For the crab feast this year, the prata chef has some tricks up his sleeve. Besides the usual prata, there are also creations like potato with crabmeat, crabmeat masala, and crabmeat roti john.

The dessert buffet, with its mixture of Asian sweet treats and Western pastries, gives you the best of both worlds. For those who love their Asian desserts, go for pulut hitam, bubur cha cha, and tau suan, Continue with mini French pastries, American cheese cake, chocolate cake and you will be in seventh heaven.

We have lost count of the number of reasons why we love The Ultimate Crab Feast buffet at PARKROYAL on Beach Road, but really, if you love crabs, round up your folks and treat yourself to a good buffet here.

Fish lovers will be happy to know that Plaza Brasserie at Parkroyal on Beach Road has a fish buffet promotion: Best of Asia Buffet with the Freshest Catch from July 5 to Aug 31. The buffet is available from Mondays to Fridays for $45++/head, and it offers an amazing variety of fish on top of their usual buffet spread.

Freshest catch of the day: Promfret, Sea Bass, Baby Snapper, Sea Bream, Kee Fish, Milk Fish, Red and Black Tilapia Fishes, Song Fish, and Norwegian Salmon Fish Head.

Preparation styles: Hong Kong Cantonese, Teochew, Nyonya, Thai Lime & Chilli, Sweet & Sour, Black Bean, Indian or local curry.

It is important to note that Plaza Brasserie serves an entire fish for each order. Just to clarify further, the fish is not from the buffet counter, it will be served directly to your table.

That means to say, if you order three different types of fish: Curry Fish Head, Steamed Teochew Promfret, and Deep-Fried Sweet & Sour Kee Fish; you will be getting one (huge) fish head, and two whole fish.

It is impossible to try the different types of fish and preparation styles if there is only two people. Unlike other buffets, it is necessary for you to gather more than four to fully enjoy the fish buffet, unless you have the appetite to eat a few whole fishes by your own.

The four of us shared five different types of fish. The Deep Fried Sweet & Sour Kee Fish was my favourite among them. I am a scaredy cat when it comes to spicy food, so both the Deep Fried Nyonya Chilli Kee Fish and the Malay Curry Fish Head were too hot for me.

The Indian Curry Fish Head wasn’t too spicy and the gravy was perfect to go along with white rice. And oh, did I tell you about the Steamed Sea Bass in Hong Kong Cantonese style? It was excellent.

Beyond that, the buffet comes with a salad counter, an ala minute ‘live’ cooking station, main course section, and desserts. Some of the hot varieties include Deep-Fried Prawns with Almonds, Stir-Fried Beef with Ginger and Spring Onion, and their signature crispy soft shell crabs & Braised Sea Cucumber with Roast Pork.

At the ‘live’ cooking station, there’s laksa, roti prata, chilli crab with mantou, tempura, and an assortment of sushi and sashimi to choose from. The tempura was really good – one of the best I’ve had. The sashimi, on the other hand, wasn’t that fresh. We ended our meal on a sweet note with desserts. Plaza Brasserie has a fantastic Chocolate Truffle cake.

On its own, Plaza Brasserie’s buffet is decent for its price, but not what I would call a must-try buffet. It is a different story for the ‘Best of Asia Buffet with The Freshest Catch‘. The 2 month special feature provides enough oomph to elevate the buffet to something better, making it an extremely value for money buffet (especially for fish-lovers).

The Freshest Catch Buffet (Adult $45++, Child $27++) is available at Plaza Brasserie from July 5 to Aug 31 on weekdays dinner.
