Seminyak is every cafe-hopper’s dream, and it just got better with the addition of KYND Community in the Jalan Petitinget area.

Of smoothie bowls, cold-pressed juices, salads and coffee, KYND Community is an Australian-owned cafe that has something for you all day long and needs to be on your itinerary.

With a distinct pink and green interior and a now iconic OOTD wall that has dominated social media feeds, KYND Community prides themselves as a plant-based cafe that aims to showcase just how wonderful plants can taste. Gone are the days when vegetarian food is just boring vegetables; vegans don’t have to lead a sad life when there are more options for plant-based food.

KYND Community encourages healthy eating without compromising on taste, and we love how they say “by living a plant-based lifestyle, you are not only making a positive impact on the planet but you age slower, have way more energy and look even better naked!”

Very true.

So, what is on their menu?  We see lots of smoothie bowls on every table so that is evidently what is most popular. Indeed, their smoothies bowls didn’t disappoint. They weren’t the best we’ve tried in Seminyak but they made us feel good nonetheless. There are only two kinds—Berry Tropical and Green & Grind, both at RP73,000. We went for the former and it tasted predominantly like dragonfruit, with nuances of sweetness from the bananas and strawberries. Topped off with granola, gluten-free option is also available upon request.

There is also a wide range of beverages—from your regular latte and mocha in both hot and iced versions, plant-based milk, milkshakes, smoothies to chai lattes. The juice menu is even more impressive. A whole list of house creations awaits, and there are what they call “elixirs”—essentially shots that boost your immunity.

And if you want something more substantial to fill your tummies, KYND Community will have you covered with their range of toasts, salads, waffles and brunch fare.

We will definitely be back at KYND Community for more wholesome goodness!

There is no lack of pretty cafes in Bali but one newbie in Seminyak deserves a special mention—Coffee Cartel.

This cafe has been getting so much attention on Instagram and it is not difficult to understand why. The cafe is MADE for Instagram with its numerous photo opportunities—from OOTD corners, a huge mural to the prettiest food and drinks.

We paid a visit to this LA-inspired cafe and here’s what we loved about Coffee Cartel, Bali.

We have to, however, admit that upon stepping into the indoor dining area, we were pretty underwhelmed. The main dining area on the first level of the cafe is pretty dull; minimal efforts were taken to “beautify” the place.

The saving grace of the first level is the outdoor seats, complete with patterned floor tiles and marble tables. That’s where most of the food shots you see on Instagram were taken.

There is also a little outdoor area at the back of the cafe where a fake dining table is set up. Well, you can really sit there if you wish to but the cacti in the background are huge—if it doesn’t bother you.

On the second level of Coffee Cartel is a quaint, home-like space with couch seats and an outdoor “balcony”.

The menu is definitely one to love. Much thoughts have been put into curating a wholesome, (relatively) healthy Aussie-style selection. You can expect a whole range of fresh juices and smoothie bowls, coffee and flavoured lattes, salads and brunch mains, as well as interesting Indonesia-influenced dishes.

You have to go for the smoothie bowl. We tried the Pink Smoothie Bowl (IDR 65,000) and it was fresh and refreshing. And very photogenic; that’s what we all care about too, right?

There is also the Zucchini & Corn Fritters that is a very typical Australian-style brunch dish and Coffee Cartel did it well. Generous pieces of fritters were complemented with a side of mashed avocado and chilli salsa, all for IDR 60,000.

The Mie Goreng Crumbed Chicken Burger (IDR 75,000) may sound weird at first, but it deserves a mention too. As the name suggests, the chicken patty comes with a Mie Goreng Crumb and it is accompanied by tomato, smashed avo and sambal mayo.

And forget regular coffee, you all. Go for the Pink Beetroot Latte (IDR 35,000) or the Turmeric Latte (IDR 35,000). Sure, besides making your social media feeds pretty, these naturally-flavoured lattes are actually very light yet tasty!

Biku—known for its traditional Indonesian classics and afternoon tea—is one of our all-time favourite Indonesian restaurants in Seminyak, Bali. While the naysayers may argue that Biku is touristy and only caters to the foreigners, the food and ambience are excellent; it is a place that we always visit every time we are in Bali.

Opened throughout the day, the restaurant is also a tea lounge during the day where ladies love to gather for afternoon tea with cakes and a wide array of tea selections from China, India and Indonesia. Their lunch and dinner menus are primarily inspired by Indonesian flavours but Biku does not shy away from infusing international culinary influences either.

Set in a 150-year-old teak joglo (Javanese wooden house), Biku blends rustic style with luxury—think wooden pillars, glistening chandeliers, vintage dark reddish brown furniture and heavy drapes in red.

Lighting is dim at night and candles are placed on every table to create a lovely, romantic ambience for diners. The setting is perfect for a dinner date or even family dinner with your loved ones.

Biku makes wonderful Indonesian classics and one item you should order from the a la carte menu is their Nasi Campur A’la Biku (RP55,000/ S$5.50). The filling dish came with rice, two types of vegetables, shredded spicy chicken, spicy egg, beef rendang, satay lilit chicken, tofu and tempe.

We were addicted to the juicy shredded spicy chicken and satay lilit chicken which came with a hint of lemongrass flavour. If you are someone who can take spicy, mix all the side dishes with their homemade chilli sauce because Nasi Campur tastes best with Indonesian chilli!

Another dish that left a great impression on us was the Nasi Goreng Special (RP48,000/ S$4.80). It is an Indonesian-style fried rice and the one at Biku comes with chicken sate, krupuk and fried egg. It is a simpler dish compared to the Nasi Campur A’la Biku but we enjoyed the fragrant fried rice just the same.

Other Indonesian dishes to look forward to are Mixed Sate (RP55,000/ S$5.50), Babi Kecap (RP60,000/ S$6.60) and Mie Goreng (RP43,000/ S$4.30). For variety, Biku also offers Western mains such as burgers and sandwiches.

Walk up to Char Char Bar & Grill and the first thing you will notice is a flight of steps where guests can chill and have a drink with some finger food. This is the best place to people watch and see all the action going down at Jalan Kayu Aya, a bustling street with tourists and locals. 

Those who are there for a drink and light bites may prefer to sit on the tiered steps. The dim lighting and tight seating arrangement encourages heart-to-heart conversations with your companion.

However, we would recommend the rooftop al fresco area for diners who are there for a proper meal. The impressive Mongolian Grill serves up a range of meat (duck/ chicken/ beef/ lamb/ pork) and seafood (fish/ prawn/ crabstick) grilled on a hot plate before it is served to your table.

Pick what you fancy from the Mongolian Grill menu featuring Trio Pepper Beef (RP95,000/ S$9.50), Duck Noodle (RP75,000/ S$7.50) and Chicken Sunny Side Up (RP75,000/ S$7.50).

Fans of seafood can opt for the Fresh Seafood Omelette (RP95,000/ S$9.50). Alternatively, you can also build your own platter for RP85,000/ S$8.50—you get four varieties of meat, five types of vegetables and a sauce of your choice.

On top of that, there is also a salad bar surrounding the grill station.

Looking for something more? Char Char Bar & Grill offers mains from their House Speciality menu too. The Spicy Barramundi (RP180,000/ S$18) is a pan roasted barramundi fillet paired with sambal and drizzled over with rich clam butter sauce.

Another item we tried was their Australian Striploin (RP225,000/ S$22.50) in medium rare doneness. While we love the juicy beef steak which came with homemade caramelised red wine onion sauce, it was nothing fantastic.

At the side, you will find creamy mashed potato, steamed baby carrot and broccoli.

Other mains to try at Char Char Bar & Grill would be the Bacon King Prawn (RP190,000/ S$19), Black Forest Pork Rack (RP175,000/ S$17.50) and Char Roasted Beef (RP220,000/ S$22).

Kim Soo is a lifestyle and retail space in Seminyak, Bali.

What attracts the great throngs of visitors to Kim Soo is the remarkable range of homewares sourced across the Indonesian Archipelago and works of art that are manufactured by the brand itself.

The place will draw you in inexplicably and keep you lingering for hours as you explore the corners of the charming shop and rest your weary feet at their in-house cafe. If you are up for anything bohemian and contemporary, Kim Soo is one place to note down for your next Bali itinerary.

Visitors are welcomed by a treasure trove of homewares and interior decorations the moment they step into Kim Soo. It is a homemaker’s heaven—you can find everything from wooden carvings, ceramics, chopping boards and kitchenware to cushions and rugs.

Wander around the shop and you will find plenty of OOTD-worthy spots against the monochrome backdrop, Grecian patterned tiles, and marble tables. In fact, the place looks almost like a villa, complete with a turquoise splash pool at the back of the retail space.

When you are ready for a drink and some light bites, head to Cafe Kim Soo which is just beside the retail section. Food selection is kept simple and you can expect to see French Toast, Pumpkin and Garlic Quiches and a range of cakes as part of the menu.

Out of the few Kim Soo Handmade Cakes, we chose the Lemon Pound Cake (RP39,000/ S$3.90). The cake was light and had just the right amount of moisture without it being too dry. We could taste the zesty lemon flavours infused in the pound cake as well.

If you are looking for more options besides the Lemon Pound Cake, why not try their Choc Coconut Slice (RP20,000/ S$2), Carrot Cake (RP35,000/ S$3.50) or their signature Kim Soo Chocolate Cake (RP39,000/ S$3.90)?

EatWell is a casual eatery among the many boutiques and restaurants along Jalan Basangkasa in Seminyak, Bali. Do be warned this is a place for meat lovers only as their menu specialises in a range of quality Australian steaks, pork dishes, and burgers that start from RP100,000/ S$10.

Popular among both locals and tourists, its no-frills concept focusing on affordable, yet delicious food adheres strictly to the restaurant’s slogan—to live well is to EatWell (eat well). Yes, happiness can be that simple. 

The interior is kept fuss-free with vintage filament bulbs and long wooden tables that are great for sharing among groups. If you are escaping from the heat, head for the indoor air-conditioned dining area instead.

EatWell has a fine range of steaks and you can get the Sirloin Steak for RP100,000/ S$10. We find this a steal considering the large cut of beef steak you get with a potato side of your choice (gratin, mashed or fries). Accompanying the main dish is creamy sauteed spinach and blue cheese sauce.

To be honest, we were slightly taken aback by the dark reddish colour of our medium rare steak when it was cut in the middle but our concerns were completely unfounded. The meat was juicy and flavourful on every bite and left us wanting more.

Next up, one of our favourites at EatWell—Crispy Pork Belly (200g for RP120,000/ S$12, 100g for RP70,000/ S$7). The succulent pork belly was so crispy, we could hear them cracking in our mouths as we bite. Those who prefer it spicy can dip the pork belly into chilli mayo sauce for the fiery kick.

The EatWell Burger (RP65,000/ S$6.50) came with 200g Australian minced wagyu beef patty, fries and homemade mayo sauce. You can get that or make it even better with homemade crispy bacon (RP15,000/ S$1.50), mozzarella cheese (RP15,000/ S$1.50) and egg (RP12,000/ S$1.20).

That’s not all! You also have other meat options including EatWell Special Steak (RP140,000/ S$14), Pork Knuckle (RP240,000/ S$24) and Grilled Chicken (RP65,000/ S$6.50).

Motel Mexicola is easily the sexiest restaurant-bar you can find in Seminyak, Bali.

With its flashy and colourful interior decorations, Motel Mexicola is unabashedly loud and funky; it would be a crime to not stop by the popular Mexican joint for some drinks and OOTDs.

Siddle up to the bar for an ice-cold Bintang beer and other refreshing cocktails. If you are feeling hungry, their food menu consists of traditional Mexican food with a modern twist and diners can expect both finger food and main dishes such as quesadilla and tacos.

Motel Mexicola is a dream spot for photographers and fashionistas who are searching for the perfect backdrop for their OOTDs.

No matter where you turn to, every spot in Motel Mexicola is extremely photogenic. And more than that, take time to appreciate the colour coordination and mismatched furniture; they are works of art.

Moving onto the food, we had De Chorizo (RP80,000/ S$8) which is a quesadilla stuffed with homemade chorizo (pork sausage) and melted cheese. All quesadilla dishes at Motel Mexico are served with black beans and pico de gallo (salsa).

Looking for some finger food to complement your drinks? Motel Mexicola has a range of tacos with different flavours to choose from. We picked Camarón and Al Pastor (RP30,000/ S$3), which came with tempura prawn and chargrilled marinated pork respectively. The former was really good, with crispy prawn and tangy salsa fillings.

If you are there for some sweet treats, you have to try their Churros (RP50,000/ S$5). The Mexican doughnuts are crispy and we liked that they are not overly dry. Dip them into caramel or chocolate sauce!

Hailing from Sydney, Mrs Sippy is the hottest pool club, restaurant and bar in Seminyak, Bali right now.

Step into Mrs Sippy Bali and you would feel as though you are on another island. Known for its fantastic saltwater pools and dive tower, the modern pool club features a man-made beach, tall palm trees and comfortable day beds. Treat yourself to a tipple at the bar and satisfy your tummy with grub from their open-air kitchen.

Oh, and did we mention that the party never stops there?

With resident international DJ’s playing on a weekly basis and exciting events filling up their calendar, there is no reason why this is not one of the coolest place to be seen at. If you are feeling confident, head for their 5m diving platform and get your friend to take a Boomerang video of your dive!

Drinks such as the classic margarita, martini and wine are best enjoyed at the open bar, located beside the pools. Guests can get an alcoholic beverage for (RP120,000/ S$12), which we find rather decent for the ambiance you are getting.

Obviously, you should not miss out on lounging on these huge inflatable pool floats too. There are various designs available with the magical unicorn being the crowd favourite. These make for incredible pictures which will level up your Instagram game!

If pool floats are not your thing, why not rest on these day beds instead? Sip onto champagne or nibble on finger food while you chill the day or night away.

Those who are looking for something more substantial can try their Fish & Chips (RP110,000/ S$11). We enjoyed the crispy beer-battered skin and juicy fish meat which taste better with tartare mayo and a few drops of lemon.

Another item you may want to consider is Chicken Burger (RP100,000/ S$10). Ours came in a beautiful presentation with grilled chicken, guacamole, red cabbage, lettuce, tomato and spiced up with spicy mayo.

It is no secret that Bali is home to some of the best cafes and restaurants. While we enjoyed visiting all the cafes that we have been to on our trip to Seminyak, one place that won all our hearts in an instant is NOOK, a gorgeous local eatery overlooking breathtaking views of the paddy fields.

What we love about NOOK is that the cafe is tucked away from the bustling Seminyak area, but still within walking distance to the main street. Escape from the crowd and enjoy some traditional Indonesian delights that do not lose out to those you will find in warungs.

NOOK is busiest during the day, as visitors are able to take in beautiful views of the paddy fields and even pose for some pictures with the green pastures as their backdrops. Head over in the evening to catch a magnificent sunset during good weather.

NOOK’s Nasi Goreng Ayam (RP45,000/ S$4.50) was decent, but it paled in comparison to the signature Nasi Campur.

Nasi Campur Special (RP49,000/ S$4.90) is our favourite dish at NOOK—in fact, it is the one of the best Nasi Campur we have tried in Bali. Every side dish is so delicious and diners get a variety of mixed meat, vegetables, tempeh and egg given in bite-sized portions.

We would travel all the way to NOOK just to eat the Nasi Campur.

Another dish to try at NOOK is Ayam Betutu (RP55,000/ S$5.50). This is a traditional Balinese dish featuring steamed chicken cooked in bumbu betutu, a type of spice mix. It was full-flavoured and we enjoyed every morsel.

Bali Pork Star is unique in such a way that they deliver traditional Balinese food with a twist. Diners can expect a fusion between Indonesian cuisine and other Asian influences such as Japanese and Chinese spices. While we love the classic Indonesian dishes, we are always game to try something new.

Go to Bali Pork Star with an open mind and be prepared to be blown away by their unpretentious, yet mouth-watering food. 

Nasi Campur is THE local food to try when you are in Bali and we simply cannot get enough of it. However, when you are at  Bali Pork Star, forget everything you know about Nasi Campur and your expectations of how the dish should be like.

While Bali Pork Star’s Nasi Campur (RP48,000/ S$4.80) is different from the typical mixed rice dish with small sides, we love how diners get four kinds of savoury pork—Babi Sambal Matah, Babi Sambal Hijau, Babi Rica-rica, and Dendeng—with steamed white rice.

The Babi Sambal Matah was so good that we were considering to get an a la carte portion of it.

Bali Pork Star’s Pork Belly (RP50,000, S$5) features French-style pork belly accompanied with truffle sauce or black pepper sauce. Diners also get to choose between steamed rice, baby potatoes or french fries.

Although the ingredients used seem ordinary, the pork belly came with the right amount of fats which melted in our mouths almost instantly. It is a must-order when you are at Bali Pork Star.

Bali Pork Star is also rather known for its Pork Ribs (RP75,000/ S$7.50). Our ribs came drench in sweet and spicy sauce and we chose baby potatoes as a side. To be honest, it was decent but not something that we would come all the way here for.

We like to start our day right with a hearty breakfast, especially when we travel as a robust meal will give us enough fuel to go about during the day. Whale And Co is a fantastic place with great breakfast and excellent coffee if you are looking for a simple breakfast spot in Seminyak, Bali.

Diners can get mains at wallet-friendly prices, ranging from RP25,000 to RP60,000 (S$2.50 to S$6). Besides food, the cafe is also building a steady reputation on Indonesian artisan coffee and cold pressed juices.

Featuring colourful signages and glossy mirrors on pastel blue walls, Whale And Co boasts an energetic and cheerful atmosphere where visitors can settle in for a meal and a chat with their friends.

Avocado lovers, hands up! You have to try their Avo Smash Sandwich (RP55,000/ S$5.50) which comes with poached eggs lying atop smooth avocado and toasted bread. The addition of chopped almond crumbs gave the dish more variety in terms of both taste and texture.

For something simpler, we recommend The Good Eggs (RP35,000/ S$3.50). What you get is essentially two eggs (poached/ sunny-side-up/ scrambled eggs), buttered toast and your choice of sauteed spinach and mushroom or salad of the day.

Of course, what is breakfast without a cup of coffee? We enjoyed their Cappuccino (RP28,000/ S$2.80) which came with a slight bitter aftertaste from the espresso. Other caffeine choices at the cafe include Americano (RP23,000/ S$2.30) and Cafe Latte (RP28,000/ S$2.80).

Ultimo Italian Restaurant is a popular Italian restaurant located in the heart of Seminyak, Bali. Even if you are on a budget trip to Bali, do not be put off by its posh interior as the restaurant offers affordable pricing for its lovely ambiance and classic Italian dishes.

Most of the pastas and pizzas on the menu are priced less than RP100,000/ S$10. You can even complement the food with house pour wines starting from as low as RP25,000/ S$2.50. Drop by the place and you will see why this is one of our all-time favourite Italian restaurants in Seminyak. 

Peak hour starts during sunset at Ultimo Italian Restaurant and the place transforms into a romantic restaurant where couples can have an intimate candlelight dinner. If you are not a fan of crowds, visit them during the day when it is quieter.

For those who are wondering what gnocchi is, it is actually soft dough dumplings that is usually made from flour or potato. Ultimo Italian Restaurant’s homemade Gnocchi Di Patate Valtelina (RP70,000/ S$7) came with rich tomato sauce and sliced portabello mushrooms.

The Fettucinne Alla Carbonara (RP70,000/ S$7) is your standard carbonara pasta featuring pork bacon and cream egg sauce. While it is not the best we have tried, we find it decent for its price.

Diners have a wide range of pasta options including Penne All’ Arabiata (RP60,000/ S$6) and Lasagna Al Forno (RP70,000/ S$7).

One thing you should not miss out is their homemade wood-fired pizzas. Served warm from their kitchen, our Margherita Pizza (RP70,000/ S$7) is a thin crust pizza with crispy edges. We liked that the cheese, tomato sauce and other savoury ingredients are evenly spread out, making every slice flavourful.

You can also look forward to other traditional Italian mains such as Filleto Mignon, Tenderloin Beef (RP190,000/ S$19) and Pollo Arrosto/Roasted Chicken (RP130,000/ S$13).

It was a gloomy morning. Intermittent drizzles, dark skies and dampen spirits. But we were to rekindle our excitement to be in Bali with our first breakfast at Sisterfields Cafe.

Among the many new names to Seminyak’s dining scene, Sisterfields Cafe ranks the most popular and we knew it would be a cafe that we’d love.

Despite the rain, nothing and no one seemed bothered. The cafe was packed at 10am; the breakfast crowd was alive. Of salads, eggs, burgers and green juices, Sisterfields Cafe is the it place to be at for breakfast when in Seminyak, Bali.

The huge space is sexily lit up with tungsten lamps. Touches of white and cerulean elements are scattered throughout in the form of chairs, and salt and pepper shakers. Racks of glass bottles and plants fill the walls. The staff so exuberant, the crowd so jolly. We loved the vibe so much.

On it’s all-day menu, there are so many that enticed us. We settled for a mix of brunch food, daily salads and burgers. Coffee and juice too, of course. The food items are priced from RP40,000 onwards, and coffee lovers can begin their mornings with lattes and mochas at RP30,000. Non-coffee drinkers can opt for mixed juices at RP39,000.

Our table was filled, and the ones that left deep impressions on us include the daily salads at RP55,000 for 2 type and Pancakes with berry compote and vanilla bean ice-cream at RP60,000. There is also a whole range of egg items for you to choose from, and we loved the classic Eggs Benedict (RP60,000). Otherwise, if you need something that boasts more oomph, go for the Lobster Slides (RP150,000) and the Sisterfields Dirty Burger (RP85,000).

Think eclairs in assorted flavours like oreo and passionfruit, chocolate tarts and raspberry mousse cakes, and a very delectable banana and nutella tart with a chocolate biscuit base. Fine and exquisite, everything here is so reasonably priced between RP30,000 to RP50,000.

BIKU

A perennial favourite and evidently well-loved by the crowd, Biku is perpetually packed with loyal fans. The wait will be worth the while, because their Nasi Campur (RP45,000) is so unforgettably delicious that we make it a point to return for a meal every time we are at Seminyak. Afternoon tea sets are also available here; at RP95,000 per pax, you get a three-tier set that includes scones, quiches and sandwiches.

CASA LUNA

Casa Luna is an institution in Ubud. It first opened in 1992 and has since become a must-visit for food lovers. The menu is comprehensive and affordable. It includes breakfast items, organic salads, homemade pastas, Balinese food, bread and pastries. The coffee here is also very good as the baristas are trained by The Five Senses coffee team from Australia. Casa Luna is a good spot to chill out and relax when you are in Ubud.

CORNER HOUSE

Corner House is inviting from every angle. Standing prominently at the tip of Jalan Laksmana (Seminyak), it is a restaurant-cum-bar that boasts a vintage decor with romantic touches of long-hanging dim lights and jars of hydrangeas. Look out for their daily specials on the blackboard, else we’d say go for the Corner House Burger (RP95,000), Fish & Chips (RP85,000) and Puff Pastry Quiche (RP52,000). We really loved the quiche, by the way.

IPPOLITO COFFEE

Housed in Maca Villa, Ippolito shares the same space as Mase Restaurant – a gorgeous poolside restaurant – and it is another great coffee joint in Seminyak. Finding the café can be slightly difficult, as it is located off the main road. But trust me, it is worth the effort, especially for those of you who love off-the-track cafes.

GARDIN BISTRO

A standalone glasshouse nestled in the quieter part of Jalan Petitenget, Gardin Bistro is a stunning restaurant that took our breath away. A trail through the garden led us to the mysterious and big wooden door, and we stepped in to an elegant space that is warmed by the sun rays. Gardin is romantic and every bit sexy, and so is their menu. Slightly on the pricier side, but we trust that your date would be impressed. The main courses were sadly nothing much to hype about, but their desserts left us lingering for more.

A little country style, a little Australian, and every bit comforting. Livingstone Cafe & Bakery is among our favourite spots for breakfast in Seminyak, and it is impossible to not fall in love with the bright space. It has a bakery with fresh daily bakes, a counter of pretty cakes and pastries, and a hearty menu with classic brunch favourites. There are plenty of good restaurants along Jalan Petitenget, and one of our favourite places is Petitenget – a casual and chic French bistro. Revolver Espresso is one of the coolest coffee joints in Seminyak, Bali. If you love coffee, and enjoy cafe-hopping, you have to drop by Revolver for a cuppa when you are exploring Jalan Laksmana. One will be hard-pressed to find Revolver Espresso unless they are in the know, or stumble on it entirely by accident. SARI ORGANIK

For the quintessential Ubud experience, you got to dine the local way among the padi fields. Our lunch at Sari Organik became the most memorable one at Ubud. It is a long walk in to the diner, we’d not deny; we took 30 minutes. But we were rewarded with a closeness to the ruralness, and a wholesome meal that was prepared with fresh produce from the fields. We dined with a view of the vast padi fields, decorated with hay stacks and with dogs running around freely; it was one refreshing experience for city kids like us.

SEA CIRCUS

A bright and cheerful restaurant that serves awesome coffee and brunch, we love Sea Circus for its vibrancy and upbeat atmosphere. Most of the items on the menu are priced below RP80,000. Besides brunch, it is also a great place for evening cocktails. And they make great tacos for dinner, too!

SENIMAN COFFEE STUDIO

Seniman Coffee Studio is the place to head to when you need good coffee in Ubud. This speciality coffee joint not only sources for the best coffee beans in Indonesia, they also roast the beans in-house. The cafe also offers a simple food menu at pocket-friendly prices. With free wifi, good coffee and simple comfort food, it is a great place to hang out with friends.

SISTERFIELDS CAFE

Among the many new names to Seminyak’s dining scene, Sisterfields ranks the most popular and it is not hard to understand why. It was pouring the day we dropped by, but at 10am, the cafe was packed; nothing and no one seemed bothered by the rain. On its all-day menu, there were too many options that enticed us. Of salads, eggs, burgers and green juices, Sisterfields is the it place to be at for breakfast when in Seminyak.

THE COFFEE LIBRARY

Sitting right in the heart of Seminyak, The Coffee Library is chic and outstanding. The exterior features cascading vines and parked motorbikes, but do step in for some fresh brew and light bites. We enjoyed the Mushroom Stir Fry (RP48,000) and Steady Chicken (RP60,000). If you need your caffeine, lattes and flat whites are at RP32,000 per cup.

THE FAT TURTLE

Very new to the cafe scene in Seminyak, The Fat Turtle is fast becoming a favourite among holiday-goers with their impressive menu at even more amazing prices. We did a double take when we first saw the menu, but not kidding – Green Tea Churros (RP27,000), Red Velvet Pancakes (RP45,000) and Brekky Sandwich (RP40,000).

But what took our breath away was the Kaffir Lime Leaf Sweet Corn Fritters (RP50,000) – a beautiful dish that includes crispy bacon, tomato jam, poached eggs and avocado Hollandaise. Definitely a must-go at Seminyak, we’d say!

Barbecued pork ribs are one of my all-time favourite food. To me, the perfect BBQ pork ribs are not only fork-tender, but they must also be succulent and slightly charred on the outside. Coated with an addictive BBQ sauce, they are unbeatable!

The pork ribs from Naughty Nuri’s Warung belong to this category. I am going out on a limb to say that their pork ribs are life-changing, and they are definitely one of the best that I have ever had. The pork ribs are so good that you would lick your fingers and plate clean. Trust me, you will see BBQ pork ribs in a very different light after trying the ones from Naughty Nuri’s Warung.

Wicked ribs and brutal cocktails. Enough said. This is a place that you must not miss in Bali.

Opened by Chef Will Meyrick — who is also behind the famous Sarong Restaurant at Petitenget — MAMA San is an uber-trendy restaurant which serves Asian-inspired dishes. It is one of the most hyped about restaurants in Bali, and rightfully so.

Generally, most people are not receptive to the idea of spending so much on “fine dining” for Asian cuisine, yet at MAMA San, you do not feel that you are overpaying for street food as Meryick has managed to come up with a concept which provides the complete dining experience. It reinterprets and serves polished and modern Asian street food in an upmarket environment. Not an easy feat, that is for sure.

MAMA San has two concepts: Upstairs – a chic lounge where the cool crowd goes for drinks and food, and Downstairs – an intimate and sexy dining room.

The brick walls, the black furniture, tall pots of plants, yellow lights and a stunning painting of an ancient Chinese woman; the menu of Asian bites such as Char Sui Pork with five spiced sauce, Roasted Peking Duck with red bean sauce, and Vietnamese Grilled Minced Pork Belly – what a brilliant marriage of contrast. There are also a variety of curries and soups such as Thai Green Curry, Tom Yum Soup, Sichuan Slow Braised Short Rib Beef and Vietnamese Pho.

The dishes sound simple, but they are anything but simple as the restaurant only uses top quality local ingredients sourced from around the country.

It was an eye-opening experience to see how well-blended the modern architecture is with the conventional Asia food options.

Restauranteurs who are planning to open an Asian cuisine restaurant should take a leaf out of Meryick’s book. MAMA San is already very popular, and it deserves all the recognition. I have no doubt that the restaurant will continue to shine as one of the best restaurants in Bali.

One of the best meals that I had in Bali during my recent trip was at Merah Putih, a classy restaurant that serves traditional Indonesian cuisine for the purists, and at the same time, dedicating another column in the menu to providing options for Indonesian food with a modern interpretation.

Indonesian cuisine is a communal affair, and this is reflected in Merah Putih’s offerings of dishes in small and large plates. The dining concept is actually inspired by the local nasi padang, where you have an array of dishes to choose form – hence the small plates to share. The owner told us that he created the restaurant because whenever someone asked him where they could go for Indonesian food in a nice setting, he did not have an answer as there was not many options. So he created the answer by conceptualising and building Merah Putih where you can enjoy the classic dishes and also discover something new.

The dining space is gorgeous, with a high ceiling and solar filtered glass walls which allow light to shine in and fill the restaurant.

The menu, as mentioned, is divided into two sections – traditional and modern, and further segmented by portion – small plates and large plates. Prices range from Rp 55,000 to 90,000 (S$7 to S$11.50) for a small plate, while you can get a large plate from Rp 145,000 (S$18) – which I believe to be fair given the quality of the food and the ambience of the restaurant.

One of the traditional small plates that we had was the Jangkang (Rp 75,000/S$10) – fried soft shell crab with salted egg, chilli and leek. It was good, but nothing to write home about. What made us sit up and take notice was the Bebek Goreng Sambal Manga (Rp 80,000/S$10.40). The crispy boneless duck with mango sambal was flawless. Every bite was so good and savoured to the last morsel.

Also good was the Balinese Yellowfin Tuna (Rp 80,000/S$10.40) – with wing beans, chilli and sambal kluwak and lemon grass – from the modern small plates menu. Every chunk of the flesh was a medley of flavours, and every bite was a mixture of invigorating spices so sensational for the taste buds.

For something more substantial, go for the large plates such as the Ayam Taliwang (Rp 145,000/S$18.80), a chargrilled Lombok spring chicken, or the Ikan Bakar, a whole chargrilled Jimbaran fish with green tomato and ginger flower. The Sumatran Duck Leg (Rp 160,000/S$20.70) and the Chargrilled Angus Beef Short Rib (Rp 160,000/S$20.70) are also tempting options on the menu.

The highlight for us was the Babli Guling (Rp 170,000/S$22). Merah Putih does a modern intrepretation of the famous Balinese suckling pig. Served with long bean kalasan, and crackling by the side, it was utterly delicious.

The humble Nasi Goreng (Rp 75,000/S$10) – with baby corn, wild mushroom, local greens, egg and fried egg – was also surprisingly good.

The folks at Merah Putih Restoran have done a fantastic job at pushing the boundaries of Indonesian cuisine. Judging by the crowd during dinner, Merah Putih is already very popular even though it has only been around for a few months. It has the potential to become one of the best restaurants in Bali.
