HOUSEPARTY

Houseparty is a free-to-download application that allows its users to video call and play quizzes and games with each other. This brings us together online, when we can’t do it face to face. What makes this app stand out is the addition of quizzes and games you can play over a call, giving us the freedom to do more than just talk. It is one of the most popular apps on the App Store.

SKRIBBL.IO

Skribbl.io is a free multiplayer drawing and guessing game, and the largest drawing game online. In one game, there are a few rounds. In every round, someone draws their chosen word on screen, and the others in the group have to submit wild guesses as to what the drawing is to gain points. The person who gains the most points at the end of the game wins. A great way to rewind with your friends on a lazy afternoon, we think.

SKYPE

Before WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Houseparty, there was Skype. Skype is a veteran telecommunications application, specialising in video chats and voice calls. It’s also very family-friendly and has parental control features that allow their children to only add people they know, so parents need not worry.

ZOOM

Zoom was originally mostly used by business organisations to host business meetings. Nowadays, people use the app to host virtual birthday parties, or virtual classrooms for kids stuck in their homes. Their free plan allows you to host up to 100 participants, have unlimited number of meetings, and a 40-minute limit on group meetings.

Kast is a video sharing app that allows its users to host watch parties with friends. Kast allows you to host TV and movie watch parties with 100+ friends, and you’re even able to play and live stream your games by sharing your screen. This age-old activity still works like a charm — kids love building sandcastles and it is one activity that can keep them occupied for hours. Singapore is also no short of clean beaches such as Palawan Beach and East Coast Park, so having a day out at the beach building sand castles and getting a tan would be a safe and fun option this March holiday.

EXPLORING SUNGEI BULOH WETLAND RESERVE 

This hidden gem at the northwest side of Singapore is teeming with different species of animals. Singapore’s famous and futuristic Gardens by the Bay is a massive, gorgeous space that is home to the renowned Supertrees. KITE FLYING 

The beauty of kite flying is that it really shows you and your kids that hard work does pay off. After labouring over your kite and putting it together, you get to reap other benefits by watching your beautiful creations take off in the sky. LONGKANG FISHING 

People from the kampung days really knew what’s up when it came to keeping kids entertained; kampung fishing is a classic activity that the older generation did when they were kids, and this simple yet thrilling activity will with no doubt keep the children entertained for hours. The look on their faces when they successfully catch a fish is absolutely priceless!

One place in Singapore that you can bring the kids over too for some kampung fishing is ORTO. For only S$12, your child will get a plastic tank and a fishing net (returnable) to catch small fishes.

Our favourite Fresh Fruits Lab (FFL) is back at it again. They have opened a second cafe—Fresh Fruits Lab Z Edition—in Clementi just behind NUS.

The new outlet is nothing short of amazing. Just like their previous branch, they stick to the core of incorporating fruits into their menu as much as possible, being kid-friendly, and serving up absolutely delicious food at even more reasonable prices than before.

We already know what’s great at their first branch, so what is it about The Z Edition that makes it fantastic? A bouncy castle for kids during the weekends! And on top of that, there are some tweaks to the menu and here is everything we love.

From now until 30 Nov 2018, kids below 8 dine for free during weekends at Fresh Fruits Lab Z when you quote ‘ladyironchef’. Every order of a main course comes with a complimentary kid’s main (from the kids’ menu).

Calling all mommies: this is also the next brunch spot you must bring your kids to for a jolly good time!

BANGING APPETISERS

Just like before, FFL serves their signature cold-pressed juices in a small test tube for you to sample, and in an adorable beaker should you order the full-size ones (averagely S$5 per glass).

We ordered the Spam Fries (S$8) as well as the Golden Brown Chicken Wings (S$8)—both served with homemade sweet chilli sauce.

The chicken wings had a lovely crispy skin that readily soaked up sweet garlic taste of the chilli. It was well seasoned down to the bone, and juicy without being oily. The light batter coating the spam fries also had an interesting texture to it, that provided a pleasant contrast between it and the soft spam inside. Despite being deep fried, it wasn’t greasy at all.

VALUE-FOR-MONEY MAINS

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. The Classic British Fish and Chips (S$12) is our all-time favourite main at FFL.

As plain and boring as it sounds, the portion size is massive, and the fish remains firm, flaky and delicately soft, encrusted by a thin layer of white ale batter. Their homemade tartar sauce boasts a slight spice to it that made the whole dish even more enjoyable. As if the generous serving is not filling enough, it comes with a side of fruit salad and truffle fries.

Another main to try is the FFL Baked Rice (S$9). The rice is cooked in buttermilk before being baked with a layer of mozzarella cheese, and it is pleasantly cheesy without being cloying or heavy. With bacon, chicken ham and mushrooms in it, kids are bound to love this dish of baked rice for sure!

The Grilled Pork Loin (S$15) is also a chef’s recommendation. Tender, thick and juicy, each morsel was a delight in itself to eat.

Served with mashed potatoes, eggplant pesto and green zucchini, the flavours intermingled with one another to highlight and emphasize the natural sweetness of the meat. It also comes along with pesto mayo sauce and apple chutney that helped to change up the flavour profile as we ate it.

Cafes are usually not known for their steaks, but FFL’s Angus Rib Eye (S$22) is definitely worth its price. It is a genuine 250gm of Angus ribeye that’s tender and soft, with the perfect amount of chew before easily sliding down your throat.

We loved how with every chew it released more of that beef flavour we all know and love, which melded well with their brown sauce that was slightly sweeter than the typical chargrill or mushroom sauce.

We also enjoyed their Cajun Chicken (S$10), which is really a simple yet comforting roasted cajun chicken served with grilled vegetables, sweet corn and mashed potatoes.

BITE-SIZED FUN FOR THE KIDS

Just like their first branch, FFL aims to cater to the entire family. Treat your kids to deliciously adorable meals such as FFL’s Teddy The Daddy (S$8), Little Miss Koala (S$8) or Chicken Little (S$10).

Their kids’ menu is prepared with less salt, without compromising on any of the other flavours for the children to enjoy. That is, if they’re willing to cut into something so cute.

#1 A STROLL IN THE JEWISH QUARTERS

#2 ANG MO KIO HERITAGE TRAIL

The Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood is one of the best representatives of Singapore’s heartlands. Planned and developed in the 1970s, Ang Mo Kio has since grown from a collection of various kampongs into a modern town teeming with delicious hawker food, small businesses and high-rise buildings.

For those who are interested in the religious developments in the Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood, some places we’d recommend you to visit include Masjid Al-Muttaqin, the Catholic Church Of Christ The King and Gao Lin Gong Temple. #3 BALESTIER HERITAGE TRAIL

With almost 180 years of history, Balestier began its days as an area filled with sugar cane plantations, old-school shops of vanishing trades and was known to harbour a few wild tigers in the neighbouring woods. Today, it is one of Singapore’s most prized historical districts and it really is a must-visit for all Singaporeans.

Did you know that Balestier is holds the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, previously the local headquarters for Dr Sun Yat Sen, one of the key participants in the Chinese 1911 Revolution? Other sights that you need to check out include the pre-war European terrace houses between Pegu and Martaban Roads and the 142-year-old Sasanarmsi Burmese Buddhist Temple.

#4 BEDOK HERITAGE TRIAL

Lying along the East Coast of Singapore is Bedok, once a coastal town thriving with fishing villages, coconut plantations and palm trees. In the past, Orang Laut fleets would look to Tanah Merah’s cliffs as a navigation marker, and this played a role in the development of Bedok as a fishing village to the bustling town it is today.

The Bedok Heritage Trail spans across 15km and some of the more interesting places to explore in this neighbourhood include Chai Chee, Kampong Bedok and Hua Yu Wee — a seafood restaurant housed in a 1920s bungalow, reminiscent of the beachside dining scene in the past.

#6 CHINATOWN HERITAGE TRAIL

Arguably one of the hottest tourist spots in Singapore, Chinatown is one of the best areas to visit for a deeper insight into the lives of the Chinese community when they first settled in Singapore during the 1820s and how it has grown into the lively and vibrant area it is today.

There are 4 distinct sub-districts within the Chinatown heritage zone, namely Telok Ayer, Kreta Ayer, Bukit Pasoh and Tanjong Pagar. #7 GEYLANG SERAI FOOT TRAIL

Putting aside any thoughts about the popular Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar held a few months ago, most would be unaware of Geylang Serai actually encompasses a large area from Lorong 22 Geylang to Geylang Serai in the east and from Sims Avenue in the north to the south of Guillemard Road.

Bursting with plenty of historical buildings and religious places of worship, the Geylang Serai area is a quintessential example of the racial harmony that Singapore enjoys today. Some places to visit include the Khadijah Mosque and Nan Hai Fei Lai Guan Yin Monastery.

#8 IN THE STEPS OF G.D. COLEMAN

Instead of focussing on just the history of a particular area, it would be worthwhile to visit the masterpieces of G.D. Coleman, the first-known architect to Singapore.

For the uninitiated, G.D. Coleman was famous for designing many early churches in Singapore, most notably the Armenian Apostolic Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator — the oldest Christian church in Singapore. G.D. Coleman also has a street and bridge named after him in Singapore so if you’re curious as to the reason about that, be sure to check out this heritage trail!

#9 JALAN BESAR HERITAGE TRAIL

A tale of a swamp that turned into a city, Jalan Besar was once surrounded by a swampland and tidal flats which have since been reclaimed, and have had schools, shophouses, temples and churches built upon that foundation.

Bound between Jalan Besar, Kitchener Road, Serangoon Road and Petain Road, New World is a must-see. This was once a park for people from all walks of life and they were entertained by the likes of merry-go-rounds, film screenings and fashion stalls until its closure in 1987. Other places to drop by include the Central Sikh Temple and Chwee Kang Beo Temple.

#12 QUEENSTOWN HERITAGE TRAIL

Queenstown — the first satellite estate in Singapore — was established by the British in 1953 as a solution for the overcrowding situation in Chinatown. Today, Queenstown is a highly sought after neighbourhood to stay at but little do most know that it is filled with iconic landmarks and abandoned ruins that should be given more attention.

Foodies should take off to the former Thye Hong Biscuit and Confectionery Factory which was one of the oldest biscuit manufacturers in Singapore. Thereafter, walk through time at the Ridout Tea Garden — Singapore’s first Japanese-themed community garden — and pay your respects at the Yin Foh Kuan Hakka Cemetery — the last remaining Hakka cemetery in Singapore.

How many of us can say that we have spent time understanding the background of the Sikh community in Singapore? Well if you haven’t, you really should. The Sepoy Lines Trail brings you along areas such as Pearl’s Hill and Outram, places that played a vital role in the early migration of Sikhs and their establishment as a community in Singapore.

#14 TOA PAYOH HERITAGE TRAIL

A prime example of a typical Singapore town, Toa Payoh is the first town designed and developed by the Housing & Development Board which spearheaded the development of public housing in Singapore. But under all those tall buildings lies the stories of early settlers, plantations and workers whose hard work and efforts form the foundation of the town today.

Toa Payoh is also home to several heritage sites such as the Toa Payoh Dragon Playground — one of the surviving old-school playgrounds in Singapore —, the 39-year-old Chung Hwa Medical Institution and religious sites such as the Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery and Masjid Muhajirin.

#15 WORLD WAR II TRAIL

It goes without saying that one of the most defining moments in Singapore’s history would be World War II. The Second World War arrived in Singapore and Malaya on 8 December 1941 and Singapore remained under Japanese occupation until 12 September 1945.

To commemorate the efforts of those who fought during the war and the blood that was shed on our island for the peace that we enjoy today, it would be meaningful to dedicate some time to visit the various war sites in Singapore. #16 YISHUN SEMBAWANG HERITAGE TRAIL

You’d be surprised to know that Yishun and Sembawang share so much history. From gambier and pepper planting during the 1800s to rubber and pineapple plantations sprouting up all over both towns during the 1900s, both towns experienced development after the opening of the Singapore Naval Base in 1938 which brought migrants to establish their homes in Singapore.

One other unique fact that most might not know is that Sembawang is home to the very first and only natural hot spring in Singapore. Other landmarks that you should visit include the Teochew Memorial Park and Yishun Park.

Singapore’s largest mass cycling event – OCBC Cycle – is taking place this year from 17 November 2017 to 19 November 2017. Running from 11 October 2017 to 21 October 2017, Forever Young is a musical which is set in 2067 in a nursing home. This is a jukebox musical adapted by Benjamin Lee from the original European cult hit written by Erik Gedeon. The cast of Forever Young includes Hossan Leong, Karen Tan, Julian Wong and more. Do note that this show would be appropriate for those 16 years old and above.

MOONFEST 2017 PEKING OPERA CLASSIC EXCERPTS

Following his successful workshop in 2015 on the Neutral Mask and Greek Tragedy, Philippe Gaulier returns with another workshop for theatre enthusiasts – Masked Play and Moliere. #3 Experience True Serenity At The MacRitchie Tree-Top Walk

Be one with nature and experience true serenity away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

This trail, which begins at Venus Drive, takes you to the TreeTop Walk, a 250 metre-long freestanding suspension bridge between the two highest points in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. People with a fear of heights need not be afraid because the bridge is extremely safe and secure.

This is probably the fastest, easiest way to get a bird’s eye view of Singapore’s forest and wildlife. We suggest going there bright and early in the morning, so you will not have to deal with the midday heat. Just keep a look out for cheeky monkeys!

MIZUNO EKIDEN 2017

Hosted by Spacebib and RunSociety, Mizuno Ekiden is the pioneer of the full-fledged Ekiden relay race in Singapore. This August will be its third instalment, and once again it seeks to create an experience where participants will learn about Japanese values such as teamwork, performance and perseverance.

Teams of four runners (same or mixed gender) will compete in a relay race over the same race course and finish off at a Japanese-themed Matsuri Festival race village. Registration is necessary.

PUMA NIGHT RUN 2017 SINGAPORE

Held at the Seletar Aerospace Park, PUMA Night Run 2017 Singapore will take place on 26 August 2017 this year and the categories of the race comprise of 6km and 12km runs. SAFRA SINGAPORE BAY RUN & ARMY HALF MARATHON 2017

The SAFRA Singapore Bay Run & Army Half Marathon 2017 is a special 25^th edition which will commemorate 50 years of National Service whilst also celebrating the event’s Silver Jubilee. Thus, a special NS50 Team Run category has been added to the marathon lineup so that past and present Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Operationally Ready National Servicemen (ORNS) can participate in the run and bond as a team.

The most magical time of the year is near and yes, we are talking about Christmas! Who doesn’t love the season of giving and sharing? And… we are excited to share that Christmas Wonderland is back again for the third year!

Entrance to Christmas Wonderland is no longer free this year, though. #1 DOUBLE THE SIZE, DOUBLE THE FUN

The event space has expanded to twice the size in order to cater for more attractions such as carnival games and rides at Christmas Wonderland, comprising a total of 57,000 square metres of land.

Not only that, even the Snow Playground at the Ice Palace will also be doubling up in size!

#2 THE MAGNIFICENT SPALLIERA CASTEL DEL MONTE

Under the 19.7m tall Spalliera Castel del Monte is where visitors can experience periodic “snowfalls” during the daily Blizzard Times at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm. This is where you will be able to take your Instagram picture of the year with the largest Luminarie built in Southeast Asia.

Also, you should not miss out on the stunning Luminarie Sculptures of Light which are designed based on the 17th and 18th century Baroque architecture. A huge amount of effort is required to build these magnificent sculptures of light which took more than a month to complete. The sculptures are made by hand using white wood from the south of Italy.

#3 LOTS OF FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES

Head down to the Ice Palace which will include an ice skating rink (S$18 for 45 minutes), 25 metres long ice slide (S$4 per person) and a snow playground (tickets start from S$12).

In addition, a collaboration with Hi-5 this year will see the young at heart screaming with joy! Step into the Hi-5 Funtastic House where your young ones will be entertained with a bouncy castle and they can show off their best dance moves to Hi-5 songs.

Garfield Run kick starts at 4.30pm on Saturday, 12 November 2016 at The Promontory @ Marina Bay. Proceeds will go to the Cat Welfare Society – so you will be running for a good cause.

Partake in either Garfield Fun Run or compete in Garfield & Arlene Couple Run. The former route is three kilometres long while the latter route is five kilometres long.

#5 SANTA RUN FOR WISHES 2016

Santa Run For Wishes 2016 will be held on Saturday, 26 November 2016 at Gardens by the Bay East from 5pm to 10pm. This family-friendly run is suitable for those with little ones as bouncing castles and kiddy rides will be available too.

Organised by Make-A-Wish Singapore, all proceeds from registration and donations will go to granting the wishes of beneficiaries.

#6 THE ZOUK RUN

The time is up and it is official – Singapore’s best nightclub Zouk has to move. To celebrate and commemorate Zouk’s location at Jiak Kim Street for the past 25 years, Zouk is organising a 3km run from its original location at 17 Jiak Kim Street to its new home at Clarke Quay.

Registration fees start at S$42 per pax which includes a party pack and entry to the afterparty.

#1 BLACKLIGHT RUN

Held at Sentosa, Palawan Green, the three-mile glow-in-the-dark race will start at 7.15pm but participants can start checking in at 5.30pm.

The after-party starts at 8.30pm; dance to music spun by DJ Automatic from USA and throw glow powder at each other.

Sounds like fun? Littles ones below the age of five can join in the glowing fun run with every paying adult.
