Created by Genevieve Lee, runner-up of MasterChef Singapore 2018, Sourbombe Artisanal Bakery started out as a home-based business with an e-commerce website during the pandemic in 2020 and it quickly made waves with its Sourdough Bomboloni—combining sourdough and the Italian ‘bomb’ shaped doughnuts.

Sourbombe Artisanal Bakery is opening their first physical store at Park Mall with a soft launch on 3 July 2021. The official opening date will be on 8 July 2021.

Sourbombe Artisanal Bakery’s 900 sq ft store at Park Mall will have a takeaway kiosk, retail section and a production kitchen that can cater to both online and retail sales. Online pre-orders and group buys will continue for fixed boxes of 9 Sourbombes, with the option of delivery or collection in-store.

You can also choose to visit the store to pick your Sourdough Bomboloni and get some drinks including cold brew coffee, house-made kombucha and dairy-free tea lattes.

Expect a total of 9 sourbombe flavours, including 6 best-selling signatures and 3 limited edition flavours, which will be introduced quarterly based on seasonal ingredients.

The 6 signature sourbombe flavours include:

Cinnabombe (plain)
The OG Sourbombe in full sour glory, dusted with cinnamon and sugar.

Blueberry & Lemon Thyme
A fruity summer bombe of lemon cream, blueberry jam and fragrant thyme

Lavender Lime Mascarpone
Velvety mascarpone infused with aromatic lavender and bright citrus lime

Basque Burnt Cheesecake
Molten lava explosions of cream cheese and blue cheese, the ultimate umami bombe

Hojicha Caramel
Fragrant Houjicha cold-steeped in milk and sprinkled with toothsome caramel crunch

Passionfruit & Caramelised Banana
A tropical paradise of ambrosial passionfruit mixed with caramelised banana cream

The bakery also has plans to launch a new range of experimental sourdough bakes—including sourdough croissants—later this year. We cannot wait to try them soon!

ALICE BOULANGERIE

Alice Boulangerie is one cafe-cum-bakery that really left a deep impression on us. In recent times when everyone is trying to outdo one another with trends and patterns, Alice Boulangerie chose to stay classy with honest bakes – ironically, this is what we are lacking in the current climate when everyone is so caught up with fanciful and Instagrammable-everything.

Remember to save some room for desserts and pastries, because everything that comes out from Alice’s pastry team is AMAZING! You will probably need to visit Alice Boulangerie several times to try everything on the menu, but we are telling you it is very well worth the trips.

ANGELINA SINGAPORE

Originating from the capital of beautiful pastries, Paris, is Angelina. Having served legends like Coco Chanel, you know that they’re worth a visit. Singapore’s Angelina branch is a luxe tearoom serving coffee, tea and delectable pastries, located in Marina Bay Sands.

For a post-shopping treat, take a seat at Angelina to enjoy their signature Mont Blanc (S$13.50). Fluffy whipped cream and meringue is topped with sweet chestnut purée; one of the most delicate desserts you will find in Singapore.

AWFULLY CHOCOLATE

The word ‘chocolate’ has almost become synonymous with our home-grown brand – Awfully Chocolate. At least, it is so for Singaporeans. In the past few years, the brand has grown significantly with many outlets islandwide now, but one thing remains – the awesomeness of their chocolate cakes. That, we will always swear by.

BRUNETTI

Brunetti, a famous Italian Pasticceria from Australia, serves up some decadent sweet treats. They also offer options for breakfast!

The Pear and Cheese Crumble is one of our favourites – a cheesecake with poached pears, blackberry jam and a chocolate chip biscuit base. For chocolate-lovers, give their Flourless Chocolate Souffle a go. It’s a wonderful blend of dark chocolate and hazelnut bavaroise cream – super rich and delicious.

CHEF YAMASHITA

Helmed and named after the man himself, Chef Yamashita Masataka is a master in creating the most beautiful handcrafted desserts. This is one Japanese patisserie where you can indulge in cakes that will not only feed your belly but your eyes as well.

If you like a fluffier, light and airy cake, their Ichigo (meaning Strawberry in Japanese), will be right up your alley. Despite being a simple strawberry shortcake, it is one of their most popular cakes. For a more indulgent treat, try their sliced matcha roll cake. The matcha flavour is strong even with the cake and cream being so light. It’s even topped with a small ball of mochi!

CIEL PATISSERIE

Ciel Patisserie brings classic French pastry to the table but also takes inspiration from popular local flavours. With a vast array of cakes and pastry, including a gluten-free option, you will never be bored with their sweet selections.

Try their Ondeh Ondeh sliced cake – each bite is filled with the aroma of pandan and the sweet, caramelized flavour of gula Melaka. Another classic would be their Strawberry Shortcake. It is one of the best strawberry shortcakes that we’ve had in Singapore.

CREAM & CUSTARD

Cream & Custard was the patisserie that went viral on Instagram a few years back for their Watermelon Strawberry Cake and other madly instagrammable confections like their Unicorn Poop and Galaxy mirror glaze cakes.

If you haven’t tried their pretty pastries yet, we’ll definitely recommend the cake that started their hype – The Watermelon Strawberry Cake. A whole slice of fresh watermelon is sandwiched between rose-scented cream and layers of chewy almond dacquoise. It’s topped with even more fresh fruits such as strawberries, blueberries and grapes.

DULCET & STUDIO

This Japanese patisserie offers great cakes and pastries. It’s the perfect place to tuck into a sweet midday slice of chiffon (or two). We especially love their Double Cheese Chiffon Cheesecake and their Choux Puffs!

Dulcet & Studio’s cheesecake was super creamy with a slight tang, which toned down the sweetness of the cake. Their choux puffs were also chocked full of milky cream filling. They introduce new flavours of choux puffs from time to time, so expect some surprises when you visit!

FLOR PATISSERIE

You absolutely have to try Flor Patisserie’s Strawberry Souffle. Ultra light vanilla sponge is paired with airy cream filling and topped with fresh strawberries in a sweet glaze. It can be likened to eating a sweet cloud when taking a bite of this cake. One of our favourites, and it will be one of yours once you try it!

Kura offers delectable pastries at reasonable prices. Here, you can indulge in some quality cakes without breaking the bank.

You have to try their Tiramisu and their Lemon Tart. Served in an edible chocolate cup, this Tiramisu is nothing short of delicious with the rich mascarpone cream and espresso-soaked biscuit base. Their Lemon Tart was tangy, sweet and an all around pleasure to eat!

Lee’s Confectionery specializes in French pastry but they incorporate local flavours and various different textures to give your tastebuds an adventure they will never forget. Try their Puff – an earl-grey infused kaya pastry puff sandwich. We loved how the flaky puff pastry fell apart, melding together with the thick kaya.

Home to the famed Ponggol Nasi Lemak and Lola’s Cafe, Kovan is easily one of Singapore’s most underrated foodie gems. As if we needed any more reason to visit Kovan, this food haven has a new prized addition to their collection of treasured eateries.

North-east siders now have one more option when they’re hunting down a sweet fix after dinner. Meet Sweet Thoughts by M.O.D.

Taking the form of an Asian dessert cafe, Sweet Thoughts by M.O.D. is a new venture by Chef Francis Wong (previously the Chef Entrepreneur of the popular Non Entrée Desserts) has 12 years of experience in creating novelty ice cream and frozen desserts up his sleeves.

Correction on 17 Mar 2020: Chef Francis Wong, previously the Chef Entrepreneur of the popular Non Entrée Desserts, has joined Sweet Thoughts by M.O.D. However, this is not a new concept by Non Entrée Desserts.

While Non Entrée’s signature bak chor mee and nasi lemak desserts aren’t making an appearance in Sweet Thought’s menu, you can still expect the same level of craftsmanship in their creations.

Their menu features a wide selection of flavoured shaved ice and steamed puddings, some with an inventive local twist. Think delectable flavours such as Matcha and Kaya Toast. Yes, you read that right.

Their Kaya Toast Steamed Pudding (S$5.50) is topped with pandan sago, gula melaka bubbles and served with crispy toast.

As for their shaved ice selection, we couldn’t be more thrilled to see flavours such as Taro, Houjicha and the majestic Mao Shan Wang. The best part? Each flavour is thoughtfully paired with curated toppings to create the most satisfying indulgence.

Their Black Sesame Shaved Ice (S$6.90) sees a mountain of nutty shaved ice loaded with adzuki red beans, peanut muah chee and brown sugar jelly. It’s the absolute dream for sugar junkies with an Asian palate.

This dessert joint shares its space with Lim Chui, a beverage concept owned by the same people, and Tie Fun Wan, a Taiwanese-inspired cafe serving fusion rice bowls. So if you’re looking for savoury grub to fill you up first, you’ve hit the jackpot with this one.

You might want to plan a trip there soon before fans of Chef Francis Wong bombard this space.

Cafes come and go but we can tell you that this hidden gem of a bakery is currently one of the best patisseries in Singapore. Despite its tiny space, it is comfortable and smells of fresh croissants with a hint of dried roses.

Sugar Thieves, opened in December last year, is a local bakery that specializes in mousse cakes and croissants. Their desserts are not just pleasing to the eye, but taste absolutely ambrosial on your tongue too.

Tucked away in the quiet streets of Kreta Ayer is the small, cosy bakery—Sugar Thieves. They can be easily missed so keep a look out for their modern wooden-panelled exterior and white signboard. Or just try spotting their freshly baked croissants sitting near the window.

The moment you step inside, all you can smell is the buttery aroma of their croissants. They have many flavours and they do change occasionally; this includes flavours such as Houjicha (S$6.50), Hokkaido Milk (S$5.50) and even a Truffle Parmesan flavour (S$7)!

We tried the Houjicha Croissant and it did not disappoint. It was crispy, flaky and most importantly, stuffed full of light and fluffy Houjicha cream. We initially had our doubts on how strong the tea flavour would turn out to be but it exceeded expectations.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

Trying the Strawberry Watermelon Cake (S$8.90) was truly a pleasure. It was light, fluffy and refreshing. The sweetness was just right, offset by the fresh strawberries, grapes and watermelon.

Normally, sweet cream gets rather jelak after a while, but this cream was cloud-like and complimented the overall cake well. There was also a hint of rose to the cake and the perfumed taste of watermelon and rose lingered on quite a while after we had finished the cake.

Saving the prettiest for last, we had their avocado mousse cake, coined the “Avo” (S$8.90). It was a pretty petite piece that made us do a double take; it looked so much like an actual avocado! Well, they used an actual avocado peel for the base.

Taking a scoop of the creamy avocado cheesecake mousse revealed the chocolate sponge cake underneath. The addition of the “seed”—a macadamia nut praline—brought the cake to a whole new level, adding an element of savoury to it. This is the kind of cake you bring home to mama.

Sometimes, when food looks too good to be eaten, they usually don’t taste all that great but Sugar Thieves has got the best of both worlds with their bakes.

One thing to note is that although we had their cakes in-house, they have a very small space and only have limited seating options. So, it may be better to take those cakes and croissants home to enjoy.
