With it being summer all-year-round, we tend to go out of the way just for some ice cream to cool down. Now you can find many ice cream parlours within residential estates, which means that these places are simply a short walk from your place and you’ll no longer have to perspire like crazy before getting your ice cream.

No matter which part of the island you live at, we’ve put together a list of ice cream shops to get your favourite treat so you can beat the Singapore heat without venturing too far from your ‘hood.

APIARY

Named after where beehives of honey bees are kept, Apiary is one place where your sweet-tooth will be satisfied. It has opened a second outlet in the heartlands of Ang Mo Kio at Jubilee Square.

Crowd favourites include the pastel-coloured Blue Milk which is a blend of creamy, sweet and salty notes, and the namesake The Apiary—honey ice cream with cacao nibs. Those hungry for more can opt for their Charcoal Waffles or Brioche to go with their ice cream.

This humble ice cream parlour in Serangoon got us all excited with homemade cookies that ooze out molten goodness, alongside a huge range of ice cream flavours that range from light and refreshing fruit sorbets to rich and creamy options.

Molten cookies are actually pretty novel and unique and you can find this kickass treat at Kooks Creamery. The cookies are crumbly on the outside; soft and chewy on the inside.

Served with a scoop of ice cream of choice, the good old combination of warm pastry and cold ice cream is one that always lifts our spirits.

This hipster ice cream joint in Lorong Ah Soo is one of the few dessert places in the neighbourhood that are opened till late. Serving up the usual fare of ice cream and waffles, the flavours vary depending on the fresh produce they can find that day. Neon lights and chill vibes, this is the place to be when those midnight ice cream cravings hit.

All Easties can relate: A typical trip to Bedok 85 Fengshan Market would most probably end at Milk & Honey Gelato for dessert. Must-try flavours include Salty Malty and of course, Milk & Honey. Feeling peckish? Go for their comprehensive sets which include waffles and drinks such as lemonade, tea or coffee. Night owls will be glad to know that this place is opened till pretty late as well.

On our visit, we got a Waffle (S$5.80) served with a regular single scoop of Hazelnut with Nutella Swirl (S$3.70), and a premium single scoop of Fleur De Cao Dark Chocolate (S$4.70).

Like most ice cream shops in Singapore, the waffles are made fresh upon order. Even as we waited for our waffle to be ready, we could smell the buttery fragrance in the air which further heightened our anticipation for our dessert.

The waffle came served with the two scoops of gelato on top and honey drizzled all over the plate. We were initially worried that all the wet factors around the waffle might end up turning it soggy quicker, but we were glad that wasn’t the case.

Despite the gelato starting to melt, the waffle remained crispy and easy to cut through. The waffle was light and fluffy, and could easily pass off as a dessert on its own. However, pairing it with the accompanying gelato is just as good as it gave this sweet treat complementing textures and taste.

Of the two flavours that we ordered, we definitely liked Hazelnut with Nutella Swirl a little more than the Fleur De Cao Dark Chocolate as the flavour bore a slightly sweeter taste on a whole, which went quite well with the waffle. The Nutella swirl bits also added an interesting texture to the gelato that we haven’t tasted anywhere else.

On the other hand, Fleur De Cao Dark Chocolate would definitely be a good flavour for fans of dark chocolate as it had a slightly bitter but all-round rich taste which left a distinct, sweet aftertaste.
