Little Creatures—famous brewing company based in Fremantle, Western Australia—is opening a brewpub in Singapore at Mohamed Ali Lane on 30 May 2018.

Beer lovers will be familiar with Little Creatures, which is one of the most popular brewing companies in Perth, Australia. Little Creatures Singapore will be serving beers freshly brewed on site, along with a curated food menu.

There will be six permanent beers on tap—Pale Ale, Bright Ale, Pilsner, IPA, and Rogers Beer. As for the food, there will be mostly sharing plates as well as a selection of pizzas and pastas that will complement the beers.

THE PELICAN GRILLED SEAFOOD PLATTER

A dish so visually stunning that we totally wanted it to be our phone’s wallpaper, The Pelican’s stellar Grilled Seafood Platter (S$158++) comprises a whole barramundi, baked oysters, grilled squid, whole baked lobster, grilled corn, and tomatoes.

The individual ingredients were treated simply with minimal fuss to best bring out their natural flavour profiles. The standouts for us, however, were the whole fish and the grilled squid.

Take it from us, their namesake dish is best enjoyed with a friend or two at the al fresco dining area by the river as you soak in the sights and sounds of the Marina Bay Skyline.

THE FRESHEST OYSTERS

Any oyster fanatics here? The Pelican is one place we can always trust for fresh, plump and juicy oysters. There are occasional oyster deals too, so be sure to check with the wait staff on the latest promotion.

GOOD OLD FASHIONED CRAB CAKES

Nothing overly fancy about these Old Fashioned Crab Cakes (S$24), just well-executed balls of sweet crab meat deep-fried to a gorgeous golden hue, accompanied with the housemade tartare sauce for an enhanced flavour.

CHILLI CRAB LINGUINI

The Pelican’s Chilli Crab Linguini (S$32) comes with a generous portion of jumbo crab meat and an unbeatable homemade chilli crab sauce that strongly reminds us of our national dish. The sauce is particularly tangy if you are a fan of strong flavours.

OUR ULTIMATE FAVOURITE – THE SNAPPER PIE

Warm, creamy, crusty and aromatic with subtle nuances from truffle, the Snapper Pie (S$40++) is truly a marvellous dish that also happens to be our favourite on the entire menu. Crack open the glorious puff pastry lid to unveil a beautifully cooked white snapper and tender vegetables in the creamy, truffle-infused sauce.

We’ve had it several times before during previous visits but still, this delightful dish hasn’t gone out of style. The flaky crust is buttery and simply irresistible when eaten together with the luscious sauce.

BEAUTIFUL RIBEYE STEAK

Considered one of the tastiest and most elegantly flavoured cuts of beef due to its ratio between fat and tender meat, the ribeye is our all-time favourite steak cuts and because it is our favourite, our standards as far as ribeyes are concerned are considerably high.

Thankfully, their Ribeye Steak (S$58++) did not disappoint. On the contrary, we were very impressed by how perfectly executed the steak was. Beautifully seared on the outside and perfectly pink in the middle, every mouthful was an explosion of intense beefy flavours.

As if that wasn’t heavenly enough, the steak is complemented with an umami-rich anchovy butter that boasts tremendously deep and rounded flavours.

LOBSTER LOVERS, YOUR “SURF & TURF”

To enjoy the full “Surf & Turf” experience, diners are able to top-up an additional S$58++ to enjoy a whole baked lobster, mixed salad and fries in addition to one of their steakhouse selections—choose from Ribeye Steak, NY Strip Steak, Grilled Pork T Bone or The Pelican Burger.

Without overdoing the lobster, the top layer is charred just enough to achieve a crispy crust while the lobster flesh beneath it is allowed to steam in its juices, resulting in meat that is succulent and tender.

THE BEST LOBSTER BURGER

While the appearance of The Pelican Lobster Burger (S$58++) was nothing much to brag about, it left a huge impression on us. Appealing in its flavours and textures, the unique patty—made entirely out of lobster—was succulent and full of natural sweetness.

However, the real deal here is undoubtedly the bacon. Candied and baked till crispy, the bacon adds a delightful crunch to the burger and a unique savoury-sweet aftertaste.

WHOOPIE PIE FOR THE CHOCO LOVERS

If there was any physical object or food that best epitomises the word ‘decadent’, it would be the restaurant’s highly acclaimed dessert—the Whoopie Pie (S$16++).

Essentially chocolate stuffed in between more chocolate and topped with even more chocolate, this decadent dessert is Miranda Kerr’s worst nightmare and every chocolate lover’s dream come true.

Luscious chocolate ganache is stuffed between two chocolate cakes and the entire thing is topped with flakes of—you guessed it—chocolate. Very sweet, very rich, very sinful, but very satisfying.

Freehouse is a craft beer joint situated in Telok Ayer, which is the perfect escape for some post-work drinks for those who are working in the CBD. This unsuspecting craft beer bar has up to 16 different craft beers and ciders on rotation, with prices starting from just S$9 for a 10oz pint.

During our recent visit, we tried the Heretic Chocolate Hazelnut Porter (S$12++ for 10oz) and Zeffer Cider Cherry Bomb (S$11.50++ for 10oz) which were complex yet tasty drinks we would definitely return for.

Even for the fussiest drinkers, they would certainly be able to find a craft beer to their liking here. Craft beers that we would recommend are the Insidious IPA (4.0%) and Calamity Coffee (4.4%) and both cost S$15 each and are brewed locally at Innocence Brewing.

Hustle Co is a cafe & bar at Craig Road which features 12 craft beers on tap. Although most would start their morning with a good cup of coffee, why not shake things up by having a craft beer with your breakfast instead?

When we visited, we were highly recommended to try the Flat White Stout (S$9 per half pint) which is a rich dark stout flavoured with coffee. We did not regret it one bit! It was robust and flavourful, combining two of our favourite beverages. What’s not to love?

Yakitori bars have been sprouting up a lot recently in Singapore, especially with the pairing of cocktails and Japanese meat skewers gaining immense popularity. Nestled along the cafe-strewn street of Bukit Pasoh Road lies Chikin, a new Yakitori bar that dishes out hearty meat skewers with a twist.

Opened by the owners of Sum Yi Tai, Chikin is an unassuming bar which specialises in clever cocktail infusions, comforting Japanese eats as well as Szechuan mala yakitori—the first of its kind. Combining traditional Japanese methods with mouth watering Szechuan flavours, Chikin aims to reshape the way we think and feel about Japanese yakitori forever.

The first floor features a neon-lit open concept kitchen and bar with a gorgeous marble bar top and the walls are covered in cheeky murals that encompass Japanese pop culture elements. With a mixture of hip-hop and clubby tunes playing in the background, stepping into Chikin almost feels like being in a club.

Chikin’s menu boasts a variety of Izakaya-style dishes to complete the dining experience. Among these are spicy variations of Japanese street snacks and comforting Japanese favourites and with a namesake like Chikin, it is not hard to guess that most of their skewers are going to made of chicken.

Ensuring no part of a chicken goes to waste, their selection of yakitori features several unconventional parts such as windpipe, heart and cartilage—which are surprisingly delicious if you are ballsy enough to try them.

Using Japanese methods of grilling skewers over binchotan flames, Chikin marries the art of Japanese Yakitori with mouth watering Szechuan spices in a creative effort to combine the best of two Asian disciplines.

We opted for a selection of 6 different chicken parts—the thigh meat (S$3), skin (S$3), ‘oyster’ (S$4) which is essentially the breast meat portion of the chicken, heart (S$3.50), cartilage (S$3.50) and chicken meatballs (S$4.50)

Spice lovers will most definitely fall head-over-heels with this. Their meat is pre-marinated in a mixture of Szechuan spices and just before serving, is dusted with more Szechuan spices. With varying degrees of spiciness, get your lips ready to be numbed in the midst of savouring the succulence of the grilled meat.

Our top three favourites were the chicken skin, chicken thigh and chicken heart.

The skin was incredibly crisp with a light dusting of spices to give it a slight kick. The heart may seem daunting at first, but it is actually really tasty with an interesting texture to it—tender and not off-putting at all.

Overall, this is a great place to hang out be it after work or not. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves from the great skewers, friendly staff, right down to the sexy interior (of which is perfect for selfies).

At Barnacles along Collyer Quay, you can indulge in the Marina Bay skyline whilst sipping inventive cocktails and indulging in some top-notch fare.

Kicking off this glorious feast, we had ourselves the Potato Mochi with Camembert Cheese (S$14++), Hummus with Cucumber and Crostini (S$14++) and a Parma Ham & Spinach Salad (S$18++).

A glass of Martini Rosso & tonic is the perfect match for something as heavily spiced as the hummus that consisted of warm spices like cumin and paprika. The complex herbal aroma of the Rosso further arouses the palate whereas the crisp and acidic tonic cuts through the dip nicely.

The salad comprised salty and fatty components such as parma ham, feta cheese and pine nuts which may prove a tad over the top for a salad if not for a glass of prosecco to bring it all back to the ground. The brightness and acidity help to offset some of the fat whilst still allowing the subtle sweetness from the parma ham to come through.

Special mention has to be made about the Burdock Sticks With Sour Cream (S$16++) which is not the most common vegetable around. A burdock is a root taken from the burdock plant and it tastes like a cross between an asparagus and an eggplant.

Deep-fried till crispy, it goes beautifully well with a glass of a Martini Royale, a cocktail designed in-house that contains Martini Bianco with a touch of lime juice.

CÉ LA VI

When it comes to cocktail bars in the city with breathtaking views, many would think of Cé La Vi. Think fine culinary creations, innovative cocktail concoctions as well as a stunning ambience.

As with most sparkling wines, Martini’s Prosecco is dry with high acidity; a straightforward wine that is simple and crisp with characteristics ranging from apple, thyme and apricot.

Based on its fruity, effervescent nature and mouthwatering acidity, it pairs best with something salty or extremely rich in flavours like an Salt & Szechuan Pepper Crispy Squid (S$26++) or a Cheese Board (S$35++)

The Tomato -V- pizza (S$22++) comprised a rich and tart tomato sauce, sun-dried tomatoes, chopped up basil leaves and copious amounts of mozzarella cheese. The cheese board comprised artisanal cheeses that were creamy, salty and bold in flavour. And the crispy squid was deep-fried to perfection with a subtle hint of pepper. As the saying goes, you can never go wrong pairing Italian flavours with Italian wine.

HARRY’S (ESPLANADE)

Buckle up for a delicious adventure just around the corner with Harry’s featuring delightful snacks and full-on mains as you bask in the beauty that is the Singapore river and the modern marvels surrounding it after a hard day’s work.

Fancy their Crisps Royale (S$17.90++) that comprises potato crisps, breaded calamari and baby horse mackerels. Fried food and a bright, crisp wine—nothing can ever go wrong with a pairing like that.

Ravenous individuals in need of a good feed should definitely head down to Beach Road Kitchen, an all-day-dining restaurant by JW Marriott Singapore South Beach.

Featuring a mouthwatering buffet line featuring fresh oysters shucked upon request and an exciting a la carte menu, diners will be spoilt for choice at this colossal restaurant.

Off their a la carte menu, you can enjoy items such as their Tuna Tartare (S$22++) that comes with a sourdough bread and a bed of avocado, Rucola Salad (S$29++) that has a huge ball of burrata cheese as its main centrepiece, as well as the Kaya Crépe (S$12++).

While a classic Prosecco would work marvellously with dishes like these, we propose having either the Martini Rosso or Bianco with tonic instead. Given that most of them are delicately flavoured so as to maintain the integrity of the fresh ingredients, the complex vermouth coupled with a mild bitter tonic offers a nice contrast to the sweet and savoury qualities of each component.

Rich, smooth and extremely buttery, this makes for an excellent sharing plate, with the onion jam and pickled mushrooms helping to cut through the sheer decadence of the parfait. This dish is best enjoyed with a crisp cocktail like a Martini Bianco & tonic, which works well in getting rid of the intense fattiness.

If you love pies stuffed with copious amounts of cheese and wilted vegetables, then the Spanakopita (S$20++) is a dish you should definitely get. Encased in a crispy, delicate filo pastry are rich feta cheese and nicely wilted Greek spinach. Heavy as it might seem, squeezing some lemon over it will really brighten the dish and keeps it relatively light.

Most people walk pass Operation Dagger without even knowing it! Which is such a shame given how gorgeous the interior of this Speakeasy Bar is. Navigating your way there is a bit of a challenge but well worth the hassle. The bar is filled with 6,000 hanging light bulbs and poses as a stunning backdrop for your cocktails.

Set foot into the dimly-lit restaurant and you will be greeted by a gigantic Iron Man statue. The life-size figurine was imported directly from the United States of America; and we say, it is a dream come true for all fans. We couldn’t stop staring at it, and we chose a table right beside so it felt like we were dining with Tony Stark!

72o Bistro & The Toys’ glass cabinet showcases a wide selection of Marvel limited edition figurines, including Black Widow, Captain America, Hulk, Thor and more. The restaurant owner has been collecting these figurines since 2000 and he decided to open a themed bistro to share his prized possessions with like-minded fans.

The collection is really expensive, and it is fascinating, to say the least.

There are a bunch of starters on 72o Bistro & The Toys’ menu. We suggest you get the Spicy Buffalo Wings (S$8.90 nett / five pieces) for sharing.

Each succulent chicken wing is marinated, deep-fried and tossed in spicy buffalo sauce. Carrot and cucumber sticks are served on the side with a blue cheese dip.

For something more substantial, share the 2 Amigos Pizza (S$13.90 nett) baked with bacon bits, bratwurst sausage, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.

It is worth mentioning that every item is served in an incredibly generous portion!

The Dancing Prawn Aglio Olio (S$14.80 nett) might look unassuming, but do not let its simplicity fool you. It is hands down our favourite Western dish from 72o Bistro & The Toys.

Al dente spaghetti is served with fresh and plump sautéed prawns, chilli flakes, garlic, onion, olive oil and pepper. Flavourful in every bite, and certainly very filling!

The 72o House Burger (S$15.80 nett) is a value-for-money main course that will fill you up easily. Melted cheese, chargrilled beef patty, smoked bacon bits, mushroom, romaine lettuce, cherry tomato, mayonnaise and a sunny side egg are served atop two palm-size sesame buns with a garden salad and a tin of fries on the side.

72o Bistro & The Toys’ signature dish is the chef-recommended Grass-fed Rib-eye Steak (S$24 nett). The rib-eye steak is grilled to the doneness of your choice and served with asparagus, mushrooms, potato wedges, salad and drenched in an aromatic brown sauce.

For something different, consider the 72o Curry Chicken Burger (S$12.80 nett), which resembles more of a sandwich. Fork-tender marinated chicken, Indian curry gravy, pineapple rings, romaine lettuce and onion slices are stuffed inside a ciabatta bread.

We have to admit that the North Indian delicacies served at 72o Bistro & The Toys seriously surpassed our expectations. Frankly speaking, there seems to be little or no link between North Indian cuisine and a bistro decked out in Marvel decors. But boy, we were impressed to no end.

The fragrant Butter Chicken (S$12.80 nett) is a must-order. In fact, we would gladly make a return special trip just for their Butter Chicken! Think tender boneless chicken cooked with a thick, buttered masala gravy. Needless to say, this Indian classic was the star of the meal—everyone was digging into the viscous tomato-based mixture.

While the Butter Chicken tastes good on its own, the Cheese and Garlic Naan (S$4.80 nett) and Chicken Briyani (S$11.80 nett) make great accompaniments.

The former is a delicious Indian bread baked in clay oven, whereas the latter is a traditional Indian dish comprising curried chicken and spiced rice. Can’t decide what to have? Order all. No such thing as too much good food.

By now, you are probably overwhelmed by the seemingly endless options available.

Want more sharing dishes? Then give the Chicken Suslick (S$9.80 nett / two sticks, S$17.80 nett / four sticks) a shot. These skewers consist of marinated chicken chunks, grilled capsicums and onions.

For the most bang for your buck, visit 72o Bistro & The Toys during lunchtime and dig into these scrumptious dishes at unbelievable prices—we are talking about S$8.80 nett for a set!

72o Bistro & The Toys is also ideal for after-work drinks. Marvel figurines and toys; sounds like a fab idea.

They have an awesome variety of beverages. Regardless of whether it is beer, wine, liquor or non-alcoholic drinks you are after, there is bound to be something you fancy sipping.

Ladies, do give their house-made 72o Classic Champagne (S$12 nett) a shot! This refreshing bubbly is available exclusively on Ladies Night aka Wednesdays at one-for-one. Weekend warriors should try their Watermelon Soju (S$28 nett), which is essentially an entire carved watermelon filled with soju. Note that this fruity potent drink is only available on Saturdays.

Alas, a speciality craft beer bar has opened in this hipster neighbourhood and it is called Good Luck Beerhouse. The 25-seater bar serves a variety of craft beers; some are locally brewed whilst the others are imported from the United States of America and New Zealand etc.

Open every day till midnight (except Sunday), Good Luck Beerhouse could just be your new hangout spot for Ang Moh Liang Teh!

You can choose to dine indoors or outdoors at Good Luck Beerhouse. There are currently eight craft beers on tap permanently and prices range from S$13 to S$15. These craft beers are also available in bottles.

There are two craft beers from Singapore-based brewery Innocence Brewing available here and they are namely Insidious IPA (4.0%) and Calamity Coffee (4.4%). We highly recommend these Singaporean craft beers as they are incredibly smooth and easy to drink! These local craft beers cost S$15 each.

Interestingly, Good Luck Beerhouse also serves dim sum on its menu. Who knows, perhaps the unlikely pairing of craft beer and dim sum would be the next IT gourmet combo.

Head right to the rooftop of Sofitel So Singapore and you will be greeted by a beautiful pool, surrounded by skyscrapers and office buildings in the Central Business District. Hi-So Rooftop Bar is a poolside bar in the hotel, and it is like a playground in the midst of the concrete jungle.

You can rest and relax on one of the sofa seats “cabana-style”, and sip on a tropical cocktail. Snap a few Outfit of The Day (#ootd) shots in this photogenic rooftop bar, too.

This Japanese-style bar is probably one of the quirkiest you can find in Singapore. We fell in love with the graffiti wall murals and the carefree open-air seating on the rooftop of Customs House.

The view of Kinki overlooks the Singapore skyline and you can catch an unblocked view of the iconic Marina Bay Sands.

With the bright crimson sign that is synonymous with the bar’s names, Loof has always been popular and we lost track of how many times we saw a photo of the sign on our Instagram feed.

The entire place sure is photo-worthy – from the sleek bar to the casual seating area. Although the lighting at Loof is pretty dim and uneven, a photo as such is possible with the Canon Powershot G5 X. The signature low light feature had us snapping away with ease!

#6 MISCHIEF

When Mischief took over its predecessor’s place at Esplanade, we were wondering if the restaurant-bar would garner enough crowds to sustain itself. But the brainchild of Mediacorp artistes Cynthia Koh and Michelle Chong and ex-Radio Jockey Daniel Ong is one place with really great deals on their beer and house pours.

We love Mischief for their low-hanging fairy lights and multi-coloured chairs – perfect for some portraits, or wefie moments with friends. Here’s a tip – you can hold up your food or drinks against the fairy lights for a blurred out (bokeh) effect. That will be a gorgeous photo there!

Rumpoles Bar is slightly different from the other bars on this list as it is an enclosed and cosy bar inside Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore. What makes the bar so special is the vivid graffiti on the walls and the adorable barrel tables.

Set to be a laid-back hotel bar in Southern Singapore, Aqua Luna indeed exudes remarkably chill vibes throughout the afternoon and even into the night. It also serves as a swim-up bar for in-house guests; how cool is that?

The scrumptious selection of bar food and premium cocktails will impress even the most discerning epicureans. The spanking new bar is partially encased by a glass-to-ceiling transparent windows, hence allowing one to simultaneously admire the picturesque surroundings whilst indulging in a meal.

Gone are the days where you can easily find a handcrafted cocktail under S$20. So imagine our surprise when we found out that Aqua Luna’s special cocktails and classics are all reasonably priced at S$18++ each! What a delightful steal! Each invigorating concoction is prepared with fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables, and don’t they just look gorgeous?

Signature must-tries include the Breezy Berries and Poire Basil. The former is a blend of mint, lychee liqueur, cherry bitters and Pisco, while the latter is a revitalising mix of Absolut Pear Vodka, basil, grapefruit bitters and zesty lime juice garnished with fresh pear slices.

Both cocktails are served in old-school silver metal tins and decorated with real fruits. These beverages are actually very potent and you will get the bang for your buck!

Another drink that you should try is their spiced cocktail Hot Melons (S$18++) – a brilliant Asian fusion invention inspired by the liqueur affogato.

Muddled with chilli padi, shaken with dark rum and served with a soursop sorbet, the cocktail is a unique sweet-and-spicy concoction. The spiciness have been underwhelmed by the ice-cream so you do not have to worry about having your tongue on fire!

Or you can also savour the classic margarita, martini and mojito with an additional unexpected twist of your choice. Spiced mojito or mojito infused with peach or mixed berries, what say you?

Similarly, you could have an apple or lychee martini instead of the traditional one. Last but not least, enjoy either a mango or mixed berry margarita – or stick to the good old classics. These enthralling classic tipples are priced at S$18++ each too.

Named after Aqua Luna’s location, this golden-hued cocktail creation – an infusion of Grand Marnier liqueur with flamed Rosemary, pineapple juices, white rum and dark rum – is served in a classy wine glass and a hit amongst both the ladies and gentlemen.

Aqua Luna keeps its entire menu extremely affordable. We were pleasantly surprised by how generously portioned and appetising the unassuming Battered Cauliflower (S$8++) was.

Each crispy fried batter contained an impossibly tender cauliflower and we love how it packed a punch with its hints of fragrant curry and onion. The addictive vegetarian dish is served with an irresistible cheesy béchamel dipping sauce on the side. Sinful as it may sound, we would return to Aqua Luna just for this, because diet can (sometimes) wait.

Sick of the ubiquitous truffle fries? Give their heavenly Truffle Polenta Fries (S$10++) a shot and you definitely will not regret wasting your calories on this amazing savoury treat. Well, for those who always tell us truffle fries are too mainstream for their liking, this would do the trick for you!

For the uninitiated, polenta is a type of thick cornmeal that is most commonly used in Central Europe It is consumed in other parts of the world such as South America and the Middle East, and they may be named differently and more commonly known as cornmeal.

For those who are keen to try something different, you will enjoy these delightful polenta fries that are dusted in parmesan cheese and served with a dollop of homemade truffle-infused mayonnaise dipping sauce.

Oysters fan, please join us in feasting with these freshly shucked Seasonal Oysters (1/2 doz – S$24++) served au natural with a classic mignonette. Can you imagine slurping them juicy oysters while swimming? Oh god, the life!

Those who do not fancy the exquisite oysters can still find other seafood nibbles, such as the A Pint of Prawns (S$14++) served with cocktail sauce, and A Pot of Mussels (S$18++) – blue mussels that have been cooked with Chardonnay.

Of course, the carnivores can join us in feasting on the decadent “Dirty” Steak (S$36++) which is grilled to medium-rare and charred in the wood-fired oven while sitting atop charcoal. It is served with anchovy butter and a pinch of sea salt.

How awesome does steak by the pool sound, right? We are all so used to steak in fine restaurants, and this experience at Aqua Luna sure is a fresh breath of air.

On to the flatbreads now, my friends. Essentially wood-fired pizzas served fresh from the oven, these bar snacks are actually very filling and enjoyable with some cocktails (but of course).

There are a total of five flavours to choose from – Crabmeat & Artichoke (S$24++), Margarita (S$18++), Beef & Chilli (S$20++), Tiger Prawn & Pesto (S$24++) and Chorizo & Onion (S$18++).

It is also worth mentioning that the breads have been painstakingly proofed for at least three hours, hence giving rise to a light and crispy crust. And they are made fresh daily!

When daylight wanes away and night-time takes over, Aqua Luna transforms from a tropical paradise into a dimly lit romantic bar; the latter is how we will always remember Aqua Luna to be, as when we first saw the bar in its full glory against the golden sunset.

Situated at the far end of The Oasis and across the gorgeous Capri By Fraser, Changi City is RessRoom, a six-month-old restaurant-cum-bar with an ambitious aim of catering to all food lovers.

Hot favourites include the mouthwatering French classic Duck Confit. The duck meat is slow cooked until meltingly tender and its skin pan-seared to a golden brown crisp. The poultry sits on a bed of soft mashed potatoes with orange sauce and served with a generous portion of sautéed mushrooms.

Available on tap are four variations of the classic negroni (S$18) where you will be consumed with desire to have a go at each. Do so. But if you really must choose, Classico and Copper Avenue bode extremely well with the palate; the former done the traditional way with The Botanist gin, and the latter; a twist on the Left Hand with a touch of amaretto. Believe us, it’s strong. Also, we should mention that there’s a hibiscus and chamomile gin-moscato number called the Athena’s elixir (S$24) that full of floral, herbaceous notes. Drink it.

#2 LOLLAPALOOZA

In Singapore’s burgeoning food scene, Lollapalooza is the blueprint for impeccable dining and service standards, and of course, wine. Surely you know someone (read: you) who could benefit from some exquisite champagne and wine. Sounds date worthy? It is. So bring a date, or a mate. There’s a rotating range of 20 champagnes and wines available by the glass and half bottle formats, with over 90 wines on the menu. Eliminate all thoughts of wines by the glass being total crap, because these will change your mind.

If you’re a fan of white wines, Soave Classico “La Rocca”, Pieropan (S$31.50) is simply outstanding. Elegant aromatics of honey and almond brim on the nose, before developing intense flavors of pressed flowers and vanilla.

And If you’re in the mood to celebrate, rise to the occasion with a glass of grower champagne. The Champagne Marie Demets, Tradition NV (S$26) is delicate and clean on the mid-palate, with aromas of ripe fruit that will not disappoint.

#3 STUDIO 1939 AT POTATO HEAD FOLK

You must’ve been to Potato Head Folk, or at least heard of them (and their deceptively coy “naughty fries” that will have you eating out the palm of their hand). But have you heard about their bar? If you haven’t, prepare to be enlightened. Ascend the stairs to level three. There’s where enlightenment begins—with over 40 rums.

We’re not religious, but it must be said. The Temple of Excellia (S$25) reigns in the godly (drinking) realm, penetrating one’s senses with oaky, bitter and sweet notes of dried fruit and rich honeycomb. Ascend into a higher realm with the beetroot and horseradish pickled quail eggs (S$10) and Johnny Drum private stock 9 bourbon-pickled onions (S$9)—you can’t go wrong when pickling with 15-year aged bourbons. Take the Silk Tea Route (S$24) and get Hooked On A Feeling (S$24); a bourbon, and rum-based cocktail where layering flavor complexities make an appearance in your favor.

Also, the bar opens before noon. Some people get drinks at that time.

#4 THE CUFFLINK CLUB

No novice in the bar scene is The Cufflink Club; its undeniably bold aura exhibited in its sleek New York-esque interior and achingly attractive cocktails. Start with gin-based Jiak the Ripper (SS$23) that awakens the palate with tart and fruity notes coupled with a tinge of herby bitterness, and work your way through the cocktail prowess of bartender Aaron Goodall. Like Berlusconi (SS$20); an egg-white number that employs pink grapefruit, mandarin, sour lemon and aperol bitters that will have you lapping it up in no time, and Porn Star (SS$28)—go the whole nine yards and tip in the champagne (so what if there’s already vodka in there?).

There’s also a tightly curated menu of pizzas to soak up the aforementioned liquids. It’s not much, but it’s all you’ll need. Order the NYC style (SS$18) pizza. It’s got the usual suspects of house cherry tomato sauce, mozzarella and oregano and it’s pretty darn amazing.

#5 THE LIBRARY

On the outside: a weekly password for entry that borders on being pretentious. On the inside: discreetly potent cocktails. On your inside: great pleasure. Saddle up onto a bar stool or cozy your date and yourself into one of the plush couch seats (where it’s more intimate). If this is a date situation, you’ll need a Silver Screen (S$23). Think of it whichever way you like, but this popcorn-infused bourbon-based beauty has a citrusy and spicy soft finish with its house-mix of 3D bitters; angostura, orange and Peychaud’s, that’s bound to heat things up (even if your date doesn’t).

There’s an option to take it slow and easy with a refreshing Piscotheque (S$23)—think sweet notes of pink guava and passion fruit that blossom in the mouth with a dry, savory-sweet finish. Then get the party started with a Foursome in the Jungle (S$32). You’ve seen this in a dream. Here, your dreams turn into reality (albeit a little differently) where Mina Real mezcal and spiced Rooibos rum form the basis for a good time, alongside citrus notes of pineapple and lime. Play your cards right and you’ll get to the concrete jungle where dreams are made of.

#1 ELIXIR BAR AT KUVO

Tucked away on the second level of Orchard Shopping Centre is a sleek new outpost (of a 40-seater bar) waiting to be unearthed. Japanese head bartender, Yukata Nakashima, runs the show at Kuvo, and ‘bespoke cocktails’ is the name of the game. Send your cocktail preferences his way and leave fate to abate your (alcoholic) cravings.

Adventurous drinkers, this spot will light your fire. A preposterous concoction that tastes uncannily like assam laksa arrives in the form of Auchentoshan 12 year old, garam masala and calamansi. It’s sour, savory and bittersweet with a tinge of exotic spice. Oh, and sidebar; there’s an option for a prawn noodle cocktail—who says you can drink your dinner?

If you’re leaving it to the bartender’s fancy, bespoke concoctions run along the path with concoctions like tequila-based beauty of Don Julio Blanco, Sambuca, martini rosso, Fernet Branca and Nikka-infused coffee beans that births a perfumed, bittersweet palate.

It’s safe to assume that your pre-dinner drinking is in capable hands.

#2 JIBIRU CRAFT BEER BAR

This is where you and 10 like-minded beer appreciators will go to take command of the bar, and focus on what’s important. Things with the words “ale” and “lager”. Because those are the things that they excel at here, alongside some pretty darn good yakitori to prep your stomach for a boozy night. We reckon the Hibiki set (S$36.50 for 12 skewers) will set you straight.

If you’re new to beer, opt for the tasting flights (S$18) where you’ll get a tasting portion of four of their rotating draft beers, explained to you in great detail—these guys sure know their stuff—before proceeding to drown your short-lived beer education.

Do so with Kinshachi red miso lager Nagoya (S$13.90) that’s got minimal head (if that rocks your boat), malty caramel tones, and hoppy bitterness with a mild miso twist, or Owa beer (S$13.50)—a Belgian style pale ale with robust notes of toffee, dark malt, earth and spice. There’s also a range of Hitachino beers catered for easy drinking—we’ve got our vote on the refreshingly malty Saison Du (S$12.90) and hoppy, bittersweet lager (S$13.90). Yes, lager. Like we said, we focus on what’s important.

#3 MANHATTAN BAR

This sleek, dark and sexy bar is exactly the kind of place where you’ll refuse to call it a night, which would be for the best, since your refusal will be met with a number of discreetly potent cocktails. Or you could give them a wild-card route (layman’s term: bespoke)—tell them your poison of choice, serving style and whatever preferences pop into your head, and watch them do their magic.

Things you cannot do without: a solera-aged negroni (S$25) and single-cask cocktail (S$25) from their rickhouse; which happens to be the world’s first in-hotel rickhouse—an interesting piece of information you can boast to your date. You can thank us later.

If you’re not (seated) by the bar, sink yourself deep into one of their plush couch seats and decide between an Avaition (S$23) made with Citadelle gin, or Penicillin (S$23) with Monkey Shoulder scotch—the former soft floral and herbaceous notes, the latter; a smoky upgrade of the classic whiskey sour with a twist of lemon and ginger. Those are the toughest decisions you should be making for the night.

#4 THE HORSE’S MOUTH

You’ll come here for one of two reasons: to impress someone of your knowledge of the best well-hidden bar in Singapore, or to ensure your night ends well. Maybe both. Either way, you’ll be in the good hands of head bartender, Byron Tan. But before he leads you down the path of denial (of drunkenness), pad down your stomach with the Wagyu tongue with yuzu pepper (S$12) and braised duck breast (S$12) that’s so flavorfully delicious it makes you wonder if you might have accidentally walked into a restaurant.

Employing our favorite spirit, mezcal, is the Beetroot Bonanza (S$25) that simmers beetroot concentrate with chili tincture before combining it with green Chartreuse to emanate the sweetness and smokiness of chargrilled beetroot. Another remarkable ‘all-star’ is the Gentlemen’s Tip (S$25) where the malty smokiness of Monkey Shoulder meets Carpano Antica Formula’s herbaceous fruity sweetness, blended with oloroso and amontillado to birth a beautifully complex concoction that layers sweet, bitter and citrus notes. You’ll take to this like a fat kid to cake.

#5 5 ON EMERALD HILL

Possibly the oldest cocktail bar in Singapore, 5 on Emerald Hill has been taking residence in an old Peranakan-styled shop house near the outskirts of town since the early 1990s. The two-level bar exudes an air of nostalgia that envelops you into thinking you’re in the 1990s—think oak wood paneling, worn out furniture and walls covered in black and white pictures of customers and celebrities from that era.

Cocktails here won’t burn a hole in your wallet (prices start from S$15), but its No. 5 original chili vodka just might. Signature vodkas and gin infusions are featured in their house-signature martinis like the No. 5 dry gin martini (S$15) that leaves a lingering burning sensation reminiscent of chili padi, or Bangkok martini (S$15) where lemongrass, lime juice and Grey Goose coconut cream is infused with chili to exude a taste of Thailand. While cocktails here don’t veer too far off in imagination, its nostalgic aura easily transports you back to the 1990s. Sometimes, old is gold.

Let’s just call it the Ol’ 5.
