For those of you who are not familiar with FLIPPER’S, it is a famous soufflé pancakes chain in Japan.

FLIPPER’S Singapore obtained its halal certification for the Takashimaya outlet in September last month and our Muslim friends can also enjoy their popular soufflé pancakes.

The Bugis enclave has come a long way since its earlier, sleazier days. Now, things have smartened up for the place with the many slews of hipster cafes, shopping centres and even classy new hotel establishments such as Andaz Singapore.

While the area is evolving into a shopping paradise for both locals and tourists alike, one thing still remains unchanged—the food scene here is immense. Sussing out some of the best from the old to the new, from glitzy restaurants, cosy cafes and humble hole-in-the-walls, here is our list of 50 cafes and restaurants in Bugis.

Fans of tempura rice bowls should check out Kogane Yama—the newest tendon restaurant in Singapore.

Started by the folks behind Chir Chir, Kogane Yama at Bugis Junction officially opens its doors to the public on 04 June 2017. This tempura speciality restaurant offers customisable tendon—choose your tendon toppings, base and the spiciness level.

Always wanted the chance to customise your own tendon? Kogane Yama allows you to do just that as diners can decide what ingredients go into their tendon bowl.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

First, select your tendon bowl from a range of 4 flavours – Mixed Bowl (S$15.80), Chicken Bowl (S$13.80), Prawn Bowl (S$13.80) and Vegetable Bowl (S$11.80). Thereafter, choose to enjoy your tendon bowl with either rice, udon or soba. Depending on your personal preference, have your say with the spiciness level of the sauce which will be drizzled all over the tempura.

Diners also have the option to add chawanmushi (S$2) or miso soup (S$1.50) to their meal.

Our hearts led us to the Mixed Bowl Rice Set Meal (S$17.80) which came with chawanmushi and a choice of either miso soup or green tea. The Mixed Bowl comprises of a combination of fresh ingredients which includes chicken, prawns, sweet potato, carrots and more, layered with our choice of Spicy Level 1 sauce.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Considering the generous portion of ingredients served, the Mixed Bowl Rice Set Meal (S$17.80) was definitely a value-for-money meal. Furthermore, the tempura batter coating was crisp and light and ingredients equally flavourful.

The Prawn Bowl (S$13.80) with soba was another dish we tried. With the same tempura selection sans chicken, the tempura was likewise well-executed and tasty. We also liked that the soba was light in flavour which complemented the otherwise heavier tempura taste.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Deep-fried to perfection with crisp exteriors and fluffy insides, we found ourselves having no problems devouring countless helpings of these addictive piping hot fries. Our absolute favourite is Sour Cream and Onion; what about you?

EwF is so confident of their signature Har Jeong Kai Chicken Wings (S$6.90) that they have proclaimed them to be the ‘Best Wings in the World’. For non-locals, Har Jeong Kai is a popular Singaporean dish of fried chicken wings marinated with fermented shrimp paste. The crispy, fragrant and juicy wings are served with a sambal chilli dip. We were sold upon sinking our teeth into the sizzling wings, and you have no clue how we always crave for them.

EwF’s culinary interpretations with Har Jeong Kai have extended to their burgers. You would want to hear this – the Har Jeong Kai Burger (S$8.90/ala-carte, S$11.90/meal) features a succulent prawn paste chicken leg sandwiched between two delicate handmade sesame buns, then topped with mayonnaise.

Everything With Fries is the first restaurant in Singapore to create Har Cheong Kai and it has gained a legion of fans since its first appearance in its flagship store at Holland Village and we are unabashedly one of them. Do we even need to justify?

Besides the best-selling Har Jeong Kai Burger, there are also a few other Asian-inspired burger inventions at EwF, such as the semi-spicy Tandoori Chicken Burger (S$8.90/ala-carte, S$11.90/meal) and Hainanese Pork Chop Burger (S$8.90/ala-carte, S$11.90/meal).

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The former has been a longstanding favourite among its regulars, while the latter is a relatively new dish that has been no less popular. We like that that it is topped off with a sunny side-up, because simple goodness like this always works.

If none of these unique burgers appeal to you, opt for their classic beef burgers. Those with bigger appetites should order the Double Decker (S$11.90/ala-carte, S$14.90/meal), which is essentially a juicy double patty beef burger stuffed with melting cheese and other goodness. It is worth mentioning that despite being a fast food restaurant, the buns and sauces are all handmade.

On to the sweets. We always save some space for desserts, yes?

EwF is not just a destination for burgers, or fries for that matter. Their desserts are so impressive that we dare say they are truly worth the extra calories. The highly acclaimed Nutella Tart with Ice Cream (S$8.90) – another original creation by Everything With Fries – consists of rich pure Nutella filling with Nutella glaze over an oreo biscuit crumb-based tart, still tasted as good as the ones we had in yesteryears. Yipe, we have been fans since Day One.

The Browned Butter Sugee Cake (S$6.90) is an interesting adaptation of the local brown sugar sponge cake. Light and with a surprising crisp texture on the top, the sweet slice of cake is covered with almond streusels and coated in browned butter fudge. It is a definite must-try, and we actually found ourselves caught in between this and the Nutella Tart. Can we just have the best of both worlds? You won’t judge us, right?

Last but not least, the Nutella Crepe (S$6.90) is an exclusive treat to EwF. A millefeuille-like nutella pastry with twenty alternating layers of paper-thin chocolate crepes and nutella cream filling, this is not as decadent as Nutella Tart, so if you still want your Nutella fix, this makes a great alternative.

Need more to satisfy that nutella obsession of yours? Indulge further with a cup of Hot Nutella (S$5.90/regular, S$6.90/large).

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Otherwise, we say give the Katong Jelly (S$4.50) a go! It is a concoction of pink lemonade and fresh agar-agar jelly that are made and “grated” in-house daily.

For the uninitiated, Katong Jelly is a long-lost Katong drink which disappeared from Singapore about 20 years ago. The good people at Everything With Fries wanted to bring back the nostalgic taste of Katong so they went on a quest around the neighbourhood to ask the old residents about the drink.

Advertorial

If you were at the Orchard area last weekend, you would have spotted nydc’s ‘Mini Cafe’ along the streets. To celebrate its new menu launch, the good people from the New York Dessert Cafe set up a ‘Mini Cafe’ where friends, couples and young families can have a little fun, share nydc’s joy while snapping photos and stand a chance to win attractive prizes when they participate in nydc’s Instagram Contest. Check out the photos by searching #iheartnydc on Instagram.

After snapping some photos at the ‘Mini Cafe’, 3 lucky winners joined me at nydc’s Wheelock outlet to sample some of the dishes from its new menu which now offers over 30 dessert items, 20 hot food items, four kids’ meals and 40 beverages. What makes nydc a place to return again and again is surely the variety on its menu. With so many gorgeous desserts and tantalising savoury food to choose from, there is always something for everyone.

Here are some of the highlights of nydc’s new menu.

The Small Plates are a good way to start the meal. You can either have them as snacks (to save room for desserts), or share them as appetisers. All items from this section are priced affordably under S$10.

A must-try is Mushroom Munchies (S$7.80 for 6 pieces). The ingredients – button mushrooms, ham, garlic mayonnaise and mozzarella – are simple, but they come together to make it a very satisfying appetiser. The Lolli Pork Ribs (S$9.80 for 4 pieces) is nydc’s take on pork ribs with chocolate soil. I like the pairing of savoury ribs with a sweet chocolate-y taste.

Dishes from the Big Plates section include salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas and pastas. For those who love all-day breakfast, you will be delighted to hear that nydc also serves two breakfast items for the entire day.

The star of the menu and what I would highly recommend is the Piggly Wiggly Burger (S$15.80). The burger is made up of strips of juicy and tender pulled pork coated with a very addictive BBQ sauce.

Another dish which I really enjoyed was the Good Ol’ Fish & Chips (S$15.80). The fish was deep-fried to a beautiful shade of golden brown, and it was done just right – not overly greasy or too oily. This was comfort food at its best.

We also had the Double Beef Booster (S$14.80) which came with a generous serving of pastrami; the Sloppy Joe (S$14.80), a minced beef stew burger done exactly the way a good burger should be – a messy experience with all the ingredients oozing out.

We were stuffed at this point, but there was no way we would skip desserts, especially when there are 30 sweets to choose from. We were really spoiled for choices, and there were so many desserts that we wanted to try. In the end, we went for a combination of nydc’s signature desserts, and some of the new items.

The Goldmine Cheesecake (S$6.80), a classic New York cheesecake with chocolate chunks and chocolate fudge topping, has kept the loyalty of regular diners. The Choco Bull’s Eye (S$6.80) and the Peanut Butter Crunch Time (S$6.80) are also two desserts that you must try at nydc. The former comes with an espresso chocolate ball within the dessert, and you can challenge your friends to see who would hit the “bull’s eye” first, while the latter is a heavenly combination of peanut butter pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

A meal at nydc is not complete without having their famous mudpies. Try the much-lauded Jedi Mudster (S$11.80) – a luscious pairing of double chocolate chip and macadamia nut ice cream on an oreo base with chunks of homemade cookies. If you are in a big group, order the 3-Some (S$11.80) to share. It comes with three layers of chocolate chip cookie dough, strawberry and strawberry cheesecake ice cream on graham crackers.

For guys who cannot do without their burgers, go for the dessert rendition – I Scream Burger (S$9.80). Featuring three scoops of chocolate chip, vanilla and strawberry ice cream sandwiched in a brioche bun, this is one attention-grabbing burger that even non-dessert lovers will be pleased.

The High & Mighty (S$8.80), another top-seller at nydc, consists of 24 layers of chocolate fudge and fluffy sponge. Unlike the usual chocolate cakes which are too sweet and dry, nydc’s rendition is moist with just the right touch of sweetness.

nydc started in 1995 with the flagship outlet in Holland village with the goal of providing a place where people would just let their hair down and share their joy and sorrow over good desserts and fun food. Its aim still remains true today. WIth their tagline “Celebrate Life Everyday”, nydc is more than just a dessert cafe that is known for its iconic mudpies and cheesecakes, it is a place where families and friends gather not just to celebrate special occasions, but also to enjoy precious time on normal days, life is indeed worth celebrating over good food at nydc.

Here is a good opportunity to try nydc’s new menu items as they are celebrating Singapore’s 48th birthday at nydc with a special $48 Bundle Deal which consists of 1 dessert, 1 Small Plate, 2 Big Plates and 1 Lemonade pitcher. Cheesecake lovers will be in for a treat too – nydc’s iconic cheesecakes are going for $48 (U.P. $66) this month. Promotion runs 9 to 31 August 2013.)

Man Fu Yuan at Intercontinental Hotel – one of Singapore’s top Cantonese restaurants – has undergone a refurbishment earlier this year and it has since returned with a stunning decor and a new emphasis on Chinese tea.

While I liked their dim sum, I didn’t frequent the old Man Fu Yuan because the decoration was kind of boring. Boy was I impressed when I went there for lunch recently. The restaurant now has a nice contemporary look with classy butterfly chandeliers, exquisite hand-painted wall coverings, and natural timber floors.

With new Chinese executive chef Chan Siu Kong helming the kitchen, Man Fu Yuan has a new focus on tea pairing. Some of the chef specialty dishes with premium Chinese tea include: Wok-fried Garoupa with White Peony Tea Leaf ($30 per portion), Stir-fried Scallops with Long Jin Tea Leaf ($38 per portion) and the beautiful Pork Ribs with Pu Erh Tea Leaf ($10 per piece) which you see in the photo above.

The dim sum at Man Fu Yuan is good, but the prices are slightly higher than most dim sum restaurants. Besides the typical offerings like Prawn Dumpling ($6.8), Pork Dumpling ($6.8) and Honey Glazed Pork Bun ($5.2), they also have some interesting items like the Baked Lobster with cheese ($6.8), Pan-fried Black Pepper Venison Dumping ($5.2) and Chilli Crabmeat Bun ($6.8). Most of the dim sum are priced between $5.2 to $6.8 per basket.

If you are at Man Fu Yuan for dim sum, remember to check out the custard buns ($12 for 6). They are one of the better custard buns that I’ve had. It is also one of the few Chinese restaurants in Singapore that serves the Deep-fried Glutinous Rice Dumpling traditional style, also known as Ham Sui Kok.

Among the dishes that we tried, I liked the Wok-fried Pork Ribs ($10 per piece) infused with Pu-erh tea leaf in lemon sauce. While it was a shame that the overwhelming lemon sauce completely covered the Pu-erh flavour, the fork-tender pork ribs were heavenly.

By the time we had the Stewed Noodles with Lobster ($12 per 100g lobster), our stomachs were already almost filled to the brim. Nonetheless, we slurped down the lobster noodles and ended the meal with two desserts – Cream of Pumpkin with ice cream ($8) and Chilled Mango Pudding with Pomelo Sago ($8).

Man Fu Yuan at Intercontinental Hotel is a nice place to have a quiet lunch near the town area. Prices are what you’d expect for a fine dining Cantonese restaurant. I like the new interior, so I can see myself going back for dim sum.

Bugis Junction has gone through a revamp and some of the newer (okay, maybe not that new) restaurants at Bugis Junction include: Let’s Sweet Japanese Desserts Buffet, Nanxiang Xiaolong Bao, and Nando’s. The funny thing is, I have never eaten at any of the Bugis Junction restaurants before.

Even though I always pass by the restaurants in Bugis Junction, they somehow didn’t appeal to me, and one of them is Ma Maison Restaurant. The dark entrance of the place was probably the main reason, and it took me until now to try the food there.

Ma Maison Restaurant is located on the second level of Bugis Junction (they also have another branch at the Central). Although it is a Japanese restaurant, the decoration is predominately French, and they serve Japanese rendition of European dishes.

There are five different choices for Ma Maison’s set lunches, and each comes with soup, salad, rice/bread and a drink. The options for the set lunch are the following: Set A) Japanese Western Set Lunch (changes daily), B) Japanese Western Set lunch (changes once every 3 days), C) Hamburger Steak, D) Salad Set, and E) Curry Rice Set.

We opted for Set A, and it was fried Chicken with Japanese dressing for that day. I couldn’t quite describe the taste of the dressing, it was slightly sweet, yet savoury – I felt that it didn’t go very well with the chicken.

Ma Maison is famous for its Hamburger Steak, so it goes without saying that I had to try it. With a beautiful sunny side-up sitting on top, the hamburger steak was well prepared, and the lovely brown sauce complimented the meat perfectly. Although the portion looked small, it was actually quite substantial with the additional salad, soup and rice/bread.

Ma Maison recently opened a new cafe at Parco Marina Bay which serves pastries, cakes and coffee. They are currently having a promotion for their set lunches, have a fruit tart for dessert by topping up an additional $4.80++. I wasn’t expecting much from the Mango Fruit Tart, but it turned out to be exceptionally good.

* * *

Prior to this visit, I was under the impression that Ma Maison Restaurant was quite pricey, but after glancing at the menu, most of the main courses are reasonably priced from $15-$20ish and they also have a 20% promotion off ala carte items for ladies on Monday Nights. However, if you are a big eater, you will probably need to order an extra appetiser/dessert to share as the portions at Ma Maison are small.

Ma Maison offers value for money set lunches which range from $12.9++ to $16.5++. This is the place to go for lunch if you are working in the Bugis or Clark Quay area.

// Also read about the $10.50 three course set lunches at Chef Daniel’s Kitchen.
