Just like how Bangkok has its own rendition of chicken rice, they also have their own version of what we Singaporeans call roast pork noodles. The Thai’s call theirs bak mee moo dang and while it looks pretty similar to Singapore’s roast pork noodles, it has a few differences as well.

Bak mee moo dang consists of Chinese-style egg noodles that are tossed in a savoury sauce and accompanied with ingredients such as leafy greens, pork slices and dumplings. The dish also isn’t hard to find in Bangkok and you can easily get your hands on a bowl of this goodness at any market, street or mall.

While people hear more of the famous Sabx2 Wanton Mee, there are other places in Bangkok that are quite popular for their roast pork noodles too. One of them is Bamee Sawang and for our recent trip to Bangkok, we decided to try it to see how it compared to both Sabx2 Wanton Mee and Singapore’s roast pork noodles.

Bamee Sawang has a pretty extensive menu that consists mostly of noodle and pork dishes that are all very reasonably priced.

We went straight ahead and ordered ourselves a bowl of Egg Noodle With Barbequed Pork (50 baht).

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We like how the noodles were al dente and incredibly springy with a good bite to it. The sauce it was tossed in was also not too oily and overpowering and it added a nice savoury touch to the overall dish. The pork slices, on the other hand, were a tad too dry for our liking despite being thinly sliced, which was slightly disappointing.

The portion size of the dish is also pretty small so if you’re a big eater, you may need to get two bowls.

We also had a go at their Stewed Pork Leg Over Rice (40baht) which featured chunky strips of pork leg paired with white rice and doused in a rich, full-bodied gravy.

The pork leg was outrageously tender and the layer of fat on each piece of meat provided it with an additional amount of umami. We also like how the pork had been stewed long enough to soak up the juices and goodness of the gravy.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The flavourful broth and tender meat won our hearts in an instant and we found ourselves polishing off the bowl within minutes. In fact, it was so good that we would come back to JJ Green Market just to have this again!

Watch the chefs in action as they whip up your food right in front of your eyes.

#2 MUNCH ON FINGER FOOD AND LIGHT BITES

If you are not having a meal there, go for some snacks instead. It is impossible to resist the strong aroma of street food when you are walking around JJ Green Market. What we suggest for you to do is to munch on some light bites along the way as you wander around the market.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

There is nothing spectacular to shout about when it comes to Pee Aor’s simple interior design but that is precisely why we love the place. The Thai eatery focuses all its attention on whipping up excellent local dishes which are comforting and reminds us of home.

Lobster Tom Yum Goong is available in two sizes—regular (THB999/S$41.11) and large (THB1200/S$49.38). We went for the latter and it came in a giant bowl filled halfway with lobster, crabs, mussels, a large piece of salmon, fresh squid, an egg and silky rice noodles.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

On the flip side, we loved the fleshy crabs most as the meat was tender and came with a decent amount of roe. The mussels also left a deep impression on us as they were not just fresh but incredibly plump as well!

So is Pee Aor’s Lobster Tom Yum Goong Noodle worth the hype? It is not bad, but at THB999, we find it too expensive for a local Thai eatery. We’d say that it is a dish that you can consider trying once for the novelty. And if you are feeling rich.

In the City of Smiles where cafes and restaurants are aplenty, a fish market exists too and you definitely need to know about it.

Shinsen Fish Market is a seafood haven in Bangkok, and it is a new addition to Bangkok’s ever-happening food scene. Just a few months shy of its first birthday, Shinsen Fish Market is supposedly inspired by and modelled after Taipei’s Addiction Aquatic Developments.

The modern fish market in Sukhumvit is a must-visit when you next visit Bangkok. Here’s everything to love about Shinsen Fish Market.

Live aquamarine and sea creatures in tanks, fresh Japanese fruits and vegetables, wine cellar and all sorts of Japanese choya & sake, hot food stations and sushi bars, some good steaks… these are but a few highlights of Shinsen Fish Market.

The establishment seeks to provide seafood lovers one space where seafood-everything is congregated and you can find almost anything you need—live products, fresh produce, cooked dishes etc.

When at Shinsen Fish Market, you must have a taste of the freshest seafood. Grab a seat at one of the bar counters; they don’t differ much, and the menu revolves mainly around sushi, sashimi and cooked food. And what we’d highly recommend is the live seafood.

Take your pick from the many tanks—crabs, lobsters, prawns, clams…

Tell the staff your desired size/ serving size, and they will catch the seafood from the respective tanks, have them weighed (prices go by weight) and ask you for your desired cooking method.

Of course, we couldn’t leave without having a Japanese crab. Zuwai crabs were the crab of the day when we went, and we had a 800g crab (approximately S$60) steamed fresh and cut up for us. If you are going in a big group, it only means seafood party for you.

Get yourselves some akagai (ark claim), lobster, awabi (abalone) and maybe a few more crabs; we promise it would be an unforgettable meal.

Ask any Singaporean which Asian city is their favourite for shopping and most would tell you Bangkok.

For the Thais, night markets are a way of life. The congregation of local vendors is a common sight and for many natives, their livelihoods depend on these bustling night bazaars.

Artbox is a massive pop-up night market with an ever-changing location. With a focus on local products, visitors can look forward to an eclectic mix of affordable vintage fashion, quirky lifestyle products, modern home decors, Instagram-worthy snacks and whatnot.

The current venue is at Chatuchak and Artbox will be occupying the space until 30 April 2017.

ASIATIQUE THE RIVERFRONT

Asiatique The Riverfront might not be as authentic as the other localised night markets, but it is suitable for those who are after a spacious and comfortable shopping experience. The area boasts 1,500 shops and prices are evidently pricier.

This higher end night market opens till midnight daily.

CHANGCHUI

The term ‘”chui” refers to being disorganised in the Thai language but do not be deceived by its name—the huge lifestyle space is a one-stop destination for everything art related.

Think fashion apparel stalls, concept cafes, food trucks and a vintage cinema for the film buffs. There is an old aeroplane right smack in the middle of ChangChui market—yes, that is how massive that night market is.

HUA MUM NIGHT MARKET

Hua Mum Night Market is considered a hidden gem because most foreigners probably don’t know about it nor wouldn’t discover it on their own—and evidently, that is its main draw. The under-the-radar localised market is not as congested as the other popular tourist attractions and you can shop for absolutely everything i.e. handcrafted handbags, customised key rings, trendy apparel.

Patpong Night Market has made a name for itself with its sheer number of counterfeit goods. The night market is jam-packed with tourists and visitors—and you either hate it or love it.

It is important to note that the bazaar is located in the red light district, hence it isn’t necessarily the most children-friendly area.

Rot Fai Market (Srinakarin) is a dream come true for shopaholics. Caution: Do not let your wife know about this place.

There are thousands of shops here and you will not have enough time to cover all the vendors in one night. It will take stamina to strike off this attraction in your list but hey, they don’t call shopping as Singapore’s national sport for nothing! Challenge accepted?

Tealily Cafe is one of the smallest cafes in Bangkok, but it is still so popular anyway. Do you know why?

Because, Matcha. Yes, when you do your matcha drinks and desserts well, everyone will love you. That is how Tealily Cafe in Bangkok rose to fame despite its size. We made a trip down recently and realised why everyone has been flooding social media with photos of their photogenic matcha drinks and desserts.

Sitting within Thong Lor is this nondescript, inconspicuous and underrated cafe called Tealilly Cafe. It is nestled among the residential houses, and the cafe is also part of a residential home. Extra points for being homely and cosy.

Tealily Cafe is an ode to matcha, though their menu includes other popular Japanese flavours such as houjicha. But we will get to that in a while. Let’s celebrate our love for matcha first.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

Anyone else loves Dango (Japanese mochi-like sweet dumpling)? The cute sweet always gets to us, and like the Japanese, we like ours with kinako powder. Get yourself a serving of the Kinako Dango (THB145) at Tealily Cafe too!

There is a tiny merchandise corner within the cafe where you get to bring home little Japanese knick knacks, and that includes snacks such as Matcha and Houjicha Spread!
