Tanjong Pagar—also known as Korea Town in Singapore—has no lack of Korean restaurants and you may be lost on where to start.

But if you are looking at an all-you-can-eat buffet option for K-BBQ, then Sin Manbok is one to go to. At S$29++per pax, you get unlimited portions of meat, two pieces of Korean fried chicken (for each diner) in your preferred flavour, a Korean stew to share, a side of tteokbokki and ramyeon, and another side of Korean pancake. Do note that the buffet option is only available during lunch.

At just S$29++ per person for lunch, you get quite a spread and despite the portions being relatively small, we were actually very stuffed from eating a bit of everything that is included in the buffet.

For the lunch buffet, you get unlimited portions of meat, two pieces of Korean fried chicken in your preferred flavour, a stew to share, a side of tteokbokki and ramyeon, and another side of Korean pancake. What did we say about being full from eating a bit of everything?

On the unlimited meat menu, there are marinated chicken, beef brisket, sliced pork belly and marinated pork short ribs.

Out of the four meat options, our favourite was the thinly sliced 2mm Pork Belly.

Each diner gets 2 pieces of Korean fried chicken and you can choose from seasoned chicken, soy chicken, fried chicken or a mixture of seasoned and soy chicken.

The restaurant will portion the stew according to the number of diners. We had the Kimchi Jjigae and it was full of flavours and very addictive.

Stir-fried tteokbokki with ramyeon.

Don Dae Bak Korean BBQ along Kreta Ayer Road offers a Korean BBQ buffet with unlimited meats, sides and steamed eggs at only S$27.90++/pax on weekdays.

What we love most about Don Dae Bak Korean BBQ is that the Korean restaurant uses charcoal grill instead of the usual gasoline grill. That sure makes a lot of difference to our meats!

This small outlet is just like any usual Korean BBQ place—round communal tables that are surrounded by kimchi and side dishes (free flow), all your sauces and chilli, and loud Korean pop songs on repeat mode. They use beef and pork belly from USA and Australia, as well as chicken that is sourced locally.

Don Dae Bak’s Korean BBQ Buffet includes:

Beef Bulogi

Beef Brisket

Pork Belly

Spicy Pork Belly

Shoulder Loin

Marinated Shoulder Loin

Marinated Chicken

Spicy Marinated Chicken

Korean sides

Steamed eggs

Other than the meats, the Korean BBQ buffet also comes with six free-flow Korean sides and unlimited steamed eggs.

The cherry on top is the pocket around the grill, where egg custard is poured and steamed egg is made. It is so simple, yet nothing short of comforting; just like the great Korean BBQ meals we’ve had in Seoul, though more often than not, steamed egg is a free dish they offer to diners.

Known for serving affordable and authentic Korean dishes, Ajumma’s Korean Restaurant has closed down its original outlet at The Cathay recently and it has officially opened its new location at Bukit Panjang Plaza on 21 Dec 2021.

Ajumma’s is a casual Korean eatery where you can get Korea homestyle cooking minus the frills (and service charge).

Most of the dishes on Ajumma’s menu are affordably priced under S$10 and they include options such as Chicken Bulgogi, Bibimbap, Spicy Ramyeon, and House-Smoked Mackerel.

The Beef Bulgogi (S$10.50) set comes with plump white rice and an assortment of small side dishes. The marinated grilled beef was juicy and savoury, best eaten with rice to balance the saltiness.

The Kimchi Ramyeon (S$8.90+) has a generous portion of noodles, meat, tofu and vegetables.

The opening of Ajumma’s Korean Restaurant at Bukit Panjang Plaza is definitely great news for those who are staying in the west of Singapore.

Jangsu Korean BBQ is a humble Korean restaurant located in Serangoon and it is run by a Korean couple. The restaurant serves affordable and super yummy food and pride themselves in using 100% aged meats that are juicy, tender and fresh. You can also expect flavourful seasoned meats that have been marinated with their secret recipe there.

Serangoon is filled with a myriad of good food and this Korean restaurant adds to the list. Here’s why you have to be sure to visit this restaurant for an authentic Korean BBQ experience!

They offer 3 different type of BBQ sets that differ in the types of meat and marinade. We had Set C (S$54) that comes with Beef Sirloin, Soy Sauce Pork Shoulder, Pork Belly and Spicy Chicken, and it also includes complimentary Steamed Eggs and choice of soup (Kimchi Soup, Soybean Soup or Tofu Soup).

The Kimchi Soup was one of the better ones we’ve had in recent times as many places tend to water down their soup too much. It was so rich in flavour, not too sour, slightly spicy, and had chunks of tofu and pork belly.

The meat were all so tender. Even when the beef was left on the grill for a longer period of time, it did not get tough nor become a jaw-breaker.

The samgyeopsal (pork belly) was just cut to the right thickness and had a good ratio of meat to fat. The pork juices were well-retained which brought out the fragrance of the meat immensely. The burst of flavours made every bite so pleasant.

Some oyster mushrooms and onions were served alongside the meat, wrap them up in a lettuce wrap to add textures for a satisfying mouthful.

We have not tasted pork shoulder so tender that it was almost soft before. However, still with a good bite to it. It had a sweet taste that lingers on your tongue but nothing too overbearing! The lady boss told us that no sugar was added in this marinade, however we think it might have been honey that was used to bring out the sweet flavours.

The Spicy Chicken had just a teeny-weeny kick of spice, suitable even for those who cannot take spice.

A special mention for their amazing banchan (side dishes) – there were braised potatoes, oyster mushrooms, kimchi, beansprouts, tofu in soy sauce, oden and a salad. We always appreciate a Korean restaurant that’s generous with their banchan.

Perfect for small group gatherings and indulgent dinners, we highly recommend you guys to check this underrated place out for an authentic Korean food fare with your friends and family!

Honey Night is a Korean bar and bistro where you can get refreshing drinks on a hot day, Korean street snacks and mains to satisfy your hunger pangs. It is conveniently located in Grandlink Square, just walking distance from Paya Lebar MRT.

Gulp down a somaek tower, bite on chewy spicy rice cakes and indulge in hearty soups, while bobbing and singing along to K-pop hits. You don’t have to fly to Korea for that ahjumma’s kimchi stew anymore because you’re in for a treat at Honey Night with their authentic tasting Korean food fare!

We had the Deep Fried Boneless Chicken (S$13 for 3pcs). It was tender and the seasoning was kept to a minimum which brought out the fragrance of the meat itself. However, the batter was a little too thick, causing some mush underneath but still crunchy on the outside.

A thinner batter that was coated more evenly would’ve been better, but the sweet and spicy sauce that came along with it tasted oh-so-good with the chicken! Have it with a piece or two of the seasoned radish and you’ll overlook the flaws of the batter.

A must-order at every Korean restaurant, the Kimchi Stew (S$12) here was pretty well done – with just the right amount of spice with robust flavours of kimchi that warms your heart, especially on a rainy day.

Flavours were 10/10, and it was as authentic as it can get. Brownie points for the generous ingredients in the soup, including tofu, glass noodles, pork belly, kimchi and onions! You know a Korean restaurant is good if they can do kimchi stews well because it is a simple dish that is hard to perfect.

The Beef Bulgogi Set Meal (S$13) is a crowd favourite! It came with a bowl of short grain rice, seaweed soup and kimchi. Can we just say that the seaweed soup was one of the best seaweed soups we’ve had because normally seaweed soup tastes bland and smells of the sea, but this was so light yet flavourful and helps to cleanse your palette.

The beef was sweet, infused with natural flavours of the onions and is a match made in heaven with short grain rice. We enjoyed it but we felt that this dish would have been perfect if the beef was slightly more tender, maybe with a fattier part and had some sweet potato noodles added in just like those you can get in Korea.

Honey Night is a hidden gem in the Paya Lebar area and the prices are slightly lower than other Korean restaurants.

The hype for Korean food never seemed to die down after the K-wave hit our shores just a few years back. Even untill today, people’s love for Korean music, culture, and of course, food continues strong.

From the same team behind many popular Japanese & Korean dining concepts in Singapore such as Chir Chir, Sora Boru, Nipong Naepong and NY Night Market, Masizzim is a Korean casual restaurant hailing all the way from South Korea that specialises in hearty and wholesome stews. If you understand Korean, you’d also realise that their name itself is a wordplay on the words ‘masi’ (delicious) and ‘jjim’ (stew).

To add a little diversity to their menu, Masizzim has rolled out a brand new lunch set menu that will be available on weekdays from 11am to 2pm (excluding public holidays) at both their 313 Somerset and Westgate outlets. Diners can look forward to an exciting lineup which includes popular Korean dishes such as bibimbap, kimchi fried rice and bulgogi!

Prices start from a very wallet-friendly S$10.90++ and each lunch set entails a main, a bowl of seaweed soup as well as two pieces of Korean pancakes.

Diners will be spoilt for choice by the 5 different mains available: Bibimbap, Kimchi Fried Rice, Spicy Meat Rice, Teriyaki Chicken and Bulgogi.

If you’re feeling a little thirsty, you can also top up an additional S$1.90++ to get yourself a cup of their refreshing Iced Lemon Tea.

YUMMY SIDES

With such hearty and rich mains, it was refreshing to have a portion of seaweed soup to go along with them. The soup was light and came with a generous amount of seaweed and tofu, making it a great palate cleanser.

The pancakes, on the other hand, had been fried to a nice crisp and we like how it wasn’t too oily. Do note that the pancake flavours are subject to change daily.

With respect to the mains, we really appreciate how Masizzim uses mixed-grain rice in all of their dishes. This makes it a great option for health-conscious diners who are looking for places that use more wholesome, heart-friendly ingredients.

BIBIMBAP

Few things are as comforting as a colourful bowl of Bibimbap (Vegetable S$10.90++, Pork or Beef S$12.90++). This wholesome Korean dish consists of a healthy array of ingredients such as mushrooms, beansprouts, spinach, yellow radish and egg that are served atop a bed of fluffy rice. Top it all off with a generous amount of spicy, tangy gochujang (red pepper paste), give it all a good mix and you’re good to go!

The bibimbap here at Masizzim is served in a piping hot hot-stone bowl which gave the entire dish a lovely smokey touch. The best part about using a hot-stone bowl is the layer of crunchy charred rice at the bottom of the bowl. This added an addictively crispy texture to the bibimbap and a nice contrasting mouthfeel to the rest of the ingredients.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

SPICY MEAT RICE

Turn up the heat with the Spicy Meat Rice that comes with either squid, beef or pork (S$12.90++ each). These are stir-fried with slivers of onions and carrots which provided the dish with a subtle sweetness that paired well with the savouriness and the umami of the proteins.

The spicy Korean red pepper sauce truly elevated the dish and we appreciate how the sauce managed to add a substantial amount of flavour to it without overpowering the other components.

TERIYAKI CHICKEN RICE

For those of you who are not all about the spice life, you can instead opt to have something milder such as their Teriyaki Chicken set (S$10.90++). The set features a simple yet substantial hot-plate piled high with chunks of outrageously tender chicken that have been fried in an addictively sweet teriyaki sauce.

Each and every mouthful was packed with a medley of flavours. From the sweetness of the teriyaki sauce to the savouriness of the chicken, this simple and homely option was definitely one of our favourites.

If you are a fan of Korean Dramas, K-POP and all things Korean, you will be familiar with the famous dak galbi chain from South Korea, Yoogane. Well-loved for their addictively spicy chicken galbi, Yoogane has earned its well-deserved reputation for serving authentic and delicious traditional Korean food.

For a limited period only, Yoogane introduces its new Samgyetang Hansik menu which features a myriad of Korean cuisine classics such as Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken Soup), Ganjang Yangnyeom Dakgangjeong (Korean Soy Sauce Fried Chicken) and Nakji Bokkeum (Stir-Fried Spicy Octopus). The new lineup of traditional Korean dishes will definitely make you feel like you’re eating right in the heart of Seoul!

Yoogane’s Samgyetang Hansik sets will be available for 2 pax (S$48++) and 4 pax (S$88++), beginning in mid-August at selected outlets, so check out what we thought of these speciality dishes before you make a trip down with your friends!

KOREAN BANCHAN & MUSHROOM GARLIC RICE

Savour 8 different kinds of traditional Korean side dishes while your mains arrive. From sweet to savoury, Yoogane has got you covered with their traditional cabbage Kimchi, Kong Ja Ban (Sweet Fermented Black Beans), Yeongeun Jorim (Braised Lotus Roots) and Kkaennip Jangajji (Pickled Perilla Leaves).

You will also have a bowl of piping-hot Mushroom and Garlic Rice and a medley of fresh vegetables and ssamjang (Korean Bean Paste Sauce) to go along with all of your dishes and banchan. Shake your rice before you dig in to mix the toppings evenly!

GANJANG YANGNYEOM DAKGANJEONG

Part of the Samgyetang Hansik set for 4 pax, this sweet-and-savoury dish is a popular midnight snack for many Koreans. Golden-brown fried chicken chunks are glazed with a sticky-sweet glaze and given a slight hint of spice from chopped chillis. They are then topped off with toasted almond slices, sesame seeds and deep-fried tteokbokki (rice cakes).

One of our favourite dishes, this dish perfectly encapsulated the best of both worlds—Sweet and savoury. The kick of spice is subtle yet lends a great amount of flavour to the crispy morsels of chicken. The crispy yet chewy rice cakes were an excellent addition, making the dish even more addictive.

SAENGSEON JEON

Yoogane’s Saengseon Jeon features silky white fish dipped in a savoury Korean pancake batter and fried till the perfect golden-brown.

The fish is so tender that it melts the moment you sink your teeth into it. Dip these special “pancakes” in a bit of ssamjang (Korean Bean Paste Sauce) to add an extra savoury kick.

NAKJI BOKKEUM

Fresh and tender octopus is fried with a myriad of vegetables and a spicy sauce to create this spicy octopus stir-fry. Though it may look menacingly red, it is not that spicy, so milder spice lovers can still enjoy this Korean cuisine staple.

We loved how the sauce was so flavourful and coated each and every ingredient such that every bite was as flavourful as the last. This saucy dish is best eaten with the Mushroom and Garlic Rice!

DAK GALBI

Yoogane’s signature and what catapulted it to fame was their dangerously addictive Dak Galbi. Cabbage, scallions, tteokbokki, and chicken are stir-fried in Yoogane’s special sweet-and-spicy marinade to create this mouth-watering Korean classic.

This needs little introduction and will definitely take your tastebuds to Seoul and back. The chicken is tender and juicy, having absorbed all the flavours of the sauce perfectly. The same goes for the chewy tteokbokki.

SAMGYETANG

Lastly, the undisputed star of Yoogane’s new Samgyetang Hansik menu has to be the Samgyetang (Korean Ginseng Chicken Soup). A whole spring chicken, stuffed with short-grained Calrose rice, is boiled in a flavourful ginseng broth. Samgyetang is an absolute must-try when in South Korea, but now you can savour this authentic staple in sunny Singapore.

The broth was ambrosial on the tastebuds. Packed with so much flavour and a mild aroma of chicken, we could not help but go back for seconds and even thirds! This is definitely one of the best Samgyetang in Singapore.

As for the chicken, just a jab from your chopsticks will separate the meat—that is how tender it is. The chicken is perfectly juicy, best eaten with a dip into salt and pepper.

Don’t forget that there is rice hidden inside the succulent chicken. Wonderfully stewed with the ginseng broth, the rice is beautifully perfumed with the light aroma of herbs. Savour it with a piece of chicken or with any of the banchan to truly enjoy this simple yet satisfying dish.

Yoogane’s Samgyetang Hansik set comes in a 2-person (S$48++) or 4-person (S$88++) portion and will be available at the following outlets:

The Korean food scene in Singapore has been on the rise over the last couple of years. This is not a surprise for many of us since Korea has been riding on the tidal wave of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, and we all love Korean products.

As Singapore’s first “ppong” specialty restaurant, the restaurant has seamlessly fused flavours inspired from around the world with impeccable flair.

THE PPONG

Dedicated to offering their diners with the most authentic flavours and food quality, Nipong Naepong ships all of their noodles, sauces and soup stocks directly from the franchise’s central kitchen in South Korea for the sake of authenticity.

CHA PPONG

Touted as the traditional and original form of jjamppong, the Cha Ppong (S$15.80) has a flavourful broth filled to the brim with jjolmyeon (Korean wheat noodles) and ingredients such as mussels, squid, prawn and quail eggs.

Cha Ppong is a crowd pleaser that offers a pleasurable spicy kick which adds further depth to the seafood broth. This is the dish for people who enjoy ramping up the heat; customers are able to choose the level of spiciness they prefer for their Cha Ppong, between level 1 and level 2 spice.

TAE PPONG

Inspired by Thailand’s Phad Thai, Tae Ppong (S$15.80) is a mildly sweet and spicy version. Wok-fried to enhance the dish, the ingredients come with a smoky aroma that raises the savoury flavours of the seafood.

Our table enjoyed the Tae Ppong for its creative take on Thai cuisine.

TOM YUM PPONG

The Tom Yum Ppong (S$14.80) a new one to the menu, and is Nipong Naepong’s take on the recognised Thai dish and comes in a cream sauce!

Cream sauce is typically heavier on the palate, but this dish carries the familiar fragrance of lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf and spice to cut through the creaminess. Tom Yum lovers will not be disappointed by this dish.

VONGOLE PPONG

Steeped in a bed of fresh seafood and spiked with white wine, the Vongole Ppong (S$16.80) will win the hearts of seafood lovers; it is served with generous portions of plump and briny clams.

Whole cloves of garlic are also used in the dish to heighten the savoury flavour profile of the Vongole Ppong.

RO PPONG-ROJE

Nipong Naepong has married the wonderful flavours of tangy tomato sauce and the richness of cream sauce in their Ro Ppong-Roje (S$17.80).

This “pink” sauce ppong will please every pasta fan; it truly has a complementary richness and freshness of both sauces to satisfy everyone. It is even topped with a substantial helping of mozzarella to make the Ppong even more lavish and incredibly mouth-watering. This was a favourite at our table.

SALAD PPONG

Presenting light and refreshing flavours for a wholesome meal, the Salad Ppong (S$15.80) is filled with a colourful variety of mixed vegetables, succulent seafood and chewy jjolmyeon covered in sweet chilli dressing!

The Salad Ppong is both sweet and savoury all at once and is even covered in a blanket of parmesan cheese; an appetising and well-rounded meal indeed.

RISOTTO

Spinning their own twist onto Italian Risottos with their signature sauces and soup stocks shipped from South Korea, Nipong Naepong keeps it classic with Arborio rice to maintain a delectable richness to the dish.

SPICY KEU RISOTTO

Drawing a mild level of heat from chilli oil that is combined with cream sauce, the Spicy Keu Risotto (S$15.80) will tantalise your tastebuds with the burst of flavours from the drool-worthy smoky aroma of the wok-fried seafood.

SOI CHICKEN RISOTTO

Providing diners with an explosion of umami flavours, the Soi Chicken Risotto (S$11.80) is a dish the children will love, especially with the pile of bonito flakes that it is topped with.

This risotto is yet another innovative Thai-influenced flavour that is presented with chunks of soy seasoned chicken and deep-fried shallots. This is also one non-seafood alternative on the menu for those who may not fancy shellfish.

PIZZA

South Korea is known for its creative take on pizzas with interesting combinations of toppings that the rest of the world would never have thought to put together! Nipong Naepong rides on this creativity while adding their own originality and flair to it.

NINAE PIZZA – SPINACH

Seamlessly marrying savoury and sweet flavours, the Ninae Pizza – Spinach (S$18.80) is topped with a large helping of fresh spinach leaves, juicy cherry tomatoes, dollops of cream cheese and just the right amount of drizzled honey. To enjoy our slice of pizza, the staff recommended that we roll it up!

We could not help but be amazed yet again by Nipong Naepong’s creativeness. The tortilla base provides a salty foundation that is complemented by the velvety texture of the cream cheese and cut by the sweetness of the honey. The vegetables also adds a layer of freshness to the palate.

NI PIZZA – SWEET POTATO

Finish your meal with the Ni Pizza – Sweet Potato (S$16.80). A favourite among customers for the velvety smooth sweet potato puree, this addictive pizza comes with a helping of homemade whipped cream to dunk your slice into before enjoying the myriad of flavours dancing in your mouth.

We were told that the best way to enjoy this pizza is to fold it like a slice of New York pizza and scoop the whipped cream up with it.

Tucked away at Kallang Wave Mall is Omoomodon, serving Halal Korean fusion rice and noodle bowls with a unique twist. Omoomodon is pronounced as ‘Omo-Omo-Don’. ‘Omo-omo’ is derived from the popular Korean slang “Oh My!”, while ‘don’ is translated to bowl in Japanese. The Korean expression in the name is used to depict pleasant surprise when their diners tuck into tasty customisable fusion bowls.

The wallet-friendly prices mean you will not have to break the bank. With the option to customise your meal exactly how you want—from your own rice bowl to a warm bowl of ramen or a delicious plate of steak—there are endless possibilities to what you can choose at Omoomodon.

We ordered the Omo Remix (S$12) and the Chasuken Ramen (S$13.50). The Omo Remix was served with Korean White Rice, Ebi Tempura, Chicken Cutlet, Pumpkin Croquette, Curry, Nori, Furikake and Onsen Tobikko.

The Chicken Cutlet was tender and did not lose its juiciness in the process of deep-frying. The Ebi Tempura was tasty and the batter for this was well-seasoned. The highlight of the three was definitely the Pumpkin Croquette; we were surprised by how creamy and mouth-watering the inside was at first bite, and it contrasted nicely with the crispy breadcrumb coating.

The egg was still oozy when we cut into it, and the short grain rice was fragrant and fluffy.

The Chasuken Ramen came in a large portion with Soy Garlic Broth, Chicken Char Siew, Onsen Tobikko, Black Fungus, and Nori. The egg for this dish was flowy as well, giving the dish a creamier flavour. The succulent Chicken Char Siew was slightly sweet from the marinade and was absolutely delicious.

The noodles were springy and complemented the star of the dish wonderfully: the Soy Garlic Broth. Incredibly flavourful without being too salty, we loved the broth so much and needless to say, we completely devoured this entire dish.

By the time we finished our meal, lunchtime came around and Omoomodon was packed with young workers awaiting a table. Clearly, this restaurant is a popular lunch destination.
