It is no secret that Bangkok is a food and shopping paradise that is full of dirt-cheap deals, and we always make it a point to come here at least once a year to get our fill on affordable food, shopping and massages.

For those of you who are visiting Bangkok for the first time and you need some ideas for your itinerary, we recommend you pay the Pratunam area a visit. The place is chock full of endless shopping, food and even more shopping and once you’re done with all that, you can give your body a break by heading over to one of the many massage parlours that are scattered around the area.

If you want to visit Pratunam but you are absolutely clueless about what you should do there, here’s our guide to give you some ideas.

WAKE UP EARLY FOR CHEAP WHOLESALE DEALS AT PRATUNAM MORNING MARKET

You can forget about scrolling through Taobao for the next few months after visiting this gargantuan wholesale paradise. The market is filled with hundreds of vendors selling trendy pieces for dirt cheap prices. We recommend coming here with a group of friends because you can get even cheaper prices when you bulk buy!

HAVE BREAKFAST AT LUNG PRATHUNAM BOAT NOODLES

There are multiple places in Bangkok that serve up decent bowls of boat noodles but one of our absolute favourites is Lung Prathunam Boat Noodle. Here, they have 6 different broths and 8 different types of noodles to choose from. Each bowl costs a mere 30 baht and an upsized version would be 40 baht. For those of you who are in a rush, you can also do a take away for 50 baht.

GO SHOPPING AT PLATINUM FASHION MALL OR PANDTIP IT MALL

It is impossible to not have heard of Platinum Fashion Mall and this shopping paradise is home to a plethora of stalls that sell cheap and trendy clothes, accessories and shoes. With 6 floors housing over 2000 stalls, the place will keep you busy for hours! If you aren’t keen in fashion, you can also head on over to Pandtip IT Mall to check out some of the tech stuff that they have available.

GET A MASSAGE ALONG PETCHABURI SOI 15

While shopping may be fun, it can also be pretty exhausting. To ease those muscles and give yourself a break, we recommend heading over to the row of massage parlours at Petchaburi Soi 15 to treat yourself to a good session of kneading and back cracking. While all the parlours there are pretty decent, our favourite is Number One Massage!

HAVE LUNCH AT GONG TONG CAFE

Gong Tong is a charming and quirky cafe that dishes out themed homemade dishes revolving around different historical periods of Thailand. They serve up both sets and à la carte options and each and every dish here will take you to a completely different era. While the prices here are on the steeper end, we can assure you that it is well worth every cent.

PAY A VISIT TO BRAND NEW MALL ‘THE MARKET’

The shopping scene in Bangkok just keeps getting better and joining the slew of malls is The Market. Located just across the road from Central World, The Market is home to plenty of stalls like boutiques, blogshops, cafes and massage parlours. The prices here are a little on the steeper end as compared to the markets but we feel like the things sold here are of better quality.

HAVE TEA AT BOYY AND SON CAFE

Located conveniently at the recently renovated Gaysorn Village, BOYY & Son is a chic, stylish and incredibly Instagram-worthy cafe that sells coffee, tea and an interesting array of pastries. We absolutely love their croissants which are flaky, buttery and fragrant all at once!

VISIT CENTRAL WORLD SHOPPING MALL

Like we said, the shopping never ends at Pratunam! Another mall to check out is the famous Central World Shopping Mall. While it is similar to many Singapore malls and the stuff here isn’t as cheap as the markets, it’s still a great place to do some window shopping and enjoy the air-con!

HAVE DINNER AT GO-ANG PRATUNAM CHICKEN RICE

If you want to try a different variation of chicken rice aside from Singapore’s Hainanese chicken rice, we recommend that you pop by Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice. These plates of Michelin Bib Gourmand chicken rice certainly live up to its name and we can see why it’s so popular with both the locals and tourists. Brace yourself for some really long queues!

CHECK OUT PALLADIUM NIGHT MARKET

As the sun sets for the day, all the night markets come out to play. Pratunam has its own share of night markets that come alive when the sky turns dark and one of the more popular ones is Palladium Night Market. Here, you can find rows of stalls selling things like clothes, accessories and random knick-knacks.

487 Phetchaburi Road

END THE NIGHT WITH TALAD NEON NIGHT MARKET

If you still have time, you can also hop on over to Talad Neon Night Market for even more shopping and feasting. We prefer this place to Palladium Night Market as we feel that the things sold here are catered more to the youths. They also have a larger array of stalls that sell food so it’s a great supper spot!

It is no secret that Singaporeans love Bangkok for being such an affordable travel destination; who can resist cheap shopping, food and massages all conveniently situated in one place?

If you’re visiting Bangkok for the first time or you just want some new ideas to add to your itinerary, we have here a 4D3N Bangkok itinerary that you can use as a guide to plan your next Bangkok trip!

DAY 1

HAVE LUNCH AT INTER RESTAURANT AFTER CHECKING INTO YOUR HOTEL

If you’re feeling a little peckish after your flight and you want to find some hearty Thai grub to dig into, we recommend popping by Inter Restaurant at Siam. This place is one of our perennial favourites in Bangkok and they serve up unpretentious and authentic local dishes at affordable prices.

INDULGE YOURSELVES IN SOME DECADENT DESSERTS AT AFTER YOU

If you’ve been to Bangkok before, this dessert cafe should be no stranger to you by now. After You first started in 2007, and it has been synonymous with Shibuya Toasts ever since. The Shibuya Honey Toast is what After You got famous for, and fast forward many years, queues still form outside its various outlets every day for their amazing desserts. They have multiple outlets across Bangkok but the biggest and prettiest one is at Siam Square one.

SHOP TILL YOU DROP AT SIAM CENTER, SIAM PARAGON, SIAM DISCOVERY AND MBK CENTRE

The Siam area is the heart of Bangkok’s shopping district and the place is packed with popular malls such as Siam Paragon, Siam Discovery and MBK Centre. As the area is conveniently linked to a BTS station, this shopping paradise is easily accessible and not hard to locate.

While Bangkok is famous for having plenty of animal cafes, our absolute favourite out of the lot is Little Zoo Cafe. The place features all sorts of animals such as dogs, cats and birds of different breeds. To top it all off, there are also exotic animals such as an Arctic fox, Fennec foxes and a massive raccoon. Rest assured, all the animals here are tame and docile when they play with humans.

Entrance to the cafe is free, but all visitors are expected to purchase a main and drink each in order to maintain the welfare of the animals.

Located on level four of Siam Paragon in Bangkok, Nuer Koo is known for its premium beef noodles, with prices ranging from THB170 for the sirloin to a whopping THB950 for a bowl of Kobe beef noodles. The beef noodles may be pricey by Bangkok’s standard, but by its quality and taste, it is still considerably reasonable, especially when we are talking about premium beef cuts such as wagyu and Kobe.

Think fashion apparel stalls, concept cafes, food trucks and a vintage cinema for the film buffs. The creative co-working space looks more like a page from a fairy tale book than the usual boisterous Thai night markets you are used to seeing in Bangkok. Also, remember to get a picture with their iconic plane that’s right smack in the middle of the place!

For those of you who are in a rush, you can also do a take away for 50 baht.

The lofty enclosure is home to a few species of butterflies which flutter around the various rockeries, flowers and shady ferns.

Chatuchak Weekend Market is no doubt one of the most well-known markets in Bangkok and for many good reasons too—the sheer size of this outdoor market makes it impossible for you to cover the entire place in a day. Covering 27 acres of land in total, this is one of the largest markets in Bangkok and it is home to over 8,000 stalls featuring Thai street food, fashion, homeware, flowers and so much more.

If you want to pop some tags but you only have 20 dollars in your pocket, you can head on over to Camp Vintage Flea Market to go thrift shopping. Not only is this place a vintage paradise, but it is also a very artsy spot to snap some great photos for the gram. We also love how they decorate the place with repurposed planes and other air crafts to go with the vintage theme.

It is not every day that we find an peaceful oasis of quietness and indulgence in the midst of our concrete jungle, but Calla Spa – The Newest All Day Luxury Spa at Suntec City – is going to be your next favourite haunt.

This luxurious spa sits within busy shopping mall, but we’d like to think of it as an urban oasis away from the hubbubs of the city. It boasts a spanking new facility that costs some S$4.50 million in renovations.

To kickstart its opening, we have an amazing deal just for readers of ladyironchef – simply quote “Ladyironchef” upon booking and you are immediately entitled to One-for-One Calla Spa Journey + Calla Massage (more details of the promotion at the end of this post).

While our ideal spa paradise is one with mud pools and waterfalls, Calla Spa gave us a fresh perspective of how a modern spa can bring harmony to the soul. That it is a lifestyle hub means we can forget about our stress within minutes of stepping into the premise and simply sink into complete relaxation – of spa treatments, good food, movies and everything that we love.

We were told that the mineral pools at Calla Spa are filled with mineral water using a newly upgraded system combined with the latest original NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) ionisation oxidizing system. Of course, it meant that we spent quite some alone time soaking in the mineral pool.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We loved the hot and cold pools too, for the hot reinvigorates blood circulation while the cold soothes our nerves and stimulates our immune system.

Ain’t it amazing that we have such a rejuvenating option in the heart of the city, where everyone else is just engaged in a rat race and tearing their hair out from the stress at work? This is where you need to be at.

CALLA SPA BISTRO

You must be wondering about the bistro already.

It is a cosy spot in the premise with a menu that changes weekly, so that there is always something to look forward to. It includes unlimited helpings of appetisers, pizzas and pastas, drinks and desserts, as well as one serving of main course per guest.

Pay for whatever spa treatments you are going for and your admission to the spa includes meals all day long? We honestly cannot think of a better deal.

THE MENU OF LUXURIOUS SPA TREATMENTS

Calla Spa’s menu is simple but comprehensive. You have your usual pre-massage scrubs and body wraps, facials, and massages.

The menu has five different types of massages that are namely the Oriental Massage (Tui Na), Deep Tissue Massage, Aromatherapy Massage, Post Natal Massage and signature Calla Massage. And there is foot reflexology as well.

If it is your first time, try the Calla Massage – a combination of traditional finger point pressure, lymph node movement and Swedish massage techniques to eradicate toxins and impurities from the body, enhancing the qi and improving overall well-being.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The ones who have zero tolerance for pressure and pain can go for the very relaxing Aromatherapy Massage which will send you deep into slumber. For the rest of us who enjoy a kickass rub to unknot all the tension in our bodies, the Oriental Massage is one to try. Note that the pressure can be quite uncomfortable if your pain tolerance is low, but know that it is for the betterment of your wellbeing. We sure felt a lot lighter after our session.

There is a private hair salon too, where you can luxuriate with cream baths and scalp treatments.

For all who are seeking some pampering for your face, the in-house specialty Pevonia lumafirm® Lift & Glow is one facial treatment to love.

FAR INFRARED SAUNA IN COUPLE SUITE

Couple rooms are available for booking at a nominal add-on. And while you think it is just about lying beside your loved one and enjoying your massage together, you are in for more.

There is a private far infrared sauna machine that is coveted for its benefits. It comes with an online wellness program that tracks your progress on how much toxins you have sweat out, as well as an entertainment system within the cabin to keep you occupied. This on its own is well worth the add-on for the couple room!

LADYIRONCHEF X CALLA SPA PROMOTION

As mentioned, quote “Ladyironchef” upon booking to get One-for-One promotion on Calla Spa Journey (spa admission) and the body massage treatment.

g.spa is certainly no new kid in town, but it is quite possibly a hidden gem that many dismiss too quickly from its old building’s facade. We were one of those who overlooked them every time we drove past Guillemard Road, for the building looks really unpromising from the outside and we honestly did not think much.

Some time last month, we stepped in for a spa session, and we were shocked; somewhat dumbfounded, in fact! g.spa is HUGE, and this S$3.5mil development is as elaborate, if not more than most of the reputable spa places in Singapore.

And just when you think it is “just another spa house”, you might want to bring your attention to their facilities. g.spa is open for 24hours and it offers a whole range of signature treatments. That’s not all. The admission also includes unlimited helpings of food from G-café.

Readers of ladyironchef get a promotion of S$50 off your main treatments when you quote “Ladyironchef” upon booking/ checking out. More details at the end of this post.

THE FACADE

We cannot think of any less cliche phrases but to say “do not judge a book by its covers”. As much as we can be very superficial at times when it comes to aesthetics, we were totally proven wrong by g.spa’s old-looking building. But step in and you will start your spa journey with this grand entrance that is far from old-looking.

A 24,000 sq.ft spa awaits. It is huger than you think, and for the three hours that we spent in there, we got lost numerous times. The premise is dimly lit and provides sufficient privacy, and it adopts an oriental look that is no less relaxing.

Now, let’s go on with the maze.

STEAM ROOMS AND POOLS

There are designated areas for both males and females, so no one needs to feel intruded or uncomfortable.

Steam rooms are traditionally used to cause sweat because when the pores are opened, salts and toxins are removed from the body and cleansing takes place. But these days, steam rooms are also promoted as a pre-treatment relaxation, as well as relieve the body of any congestion.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The various hot and cold pools are among the hugest in Singapore’s spa history, and the males have it even better with the most stunning one – you probably would have seen photos of this pool everywhere on social media, magazines and what-have-you.

VIP ROOMS AND SEMINAR ROOMS

Want even more privacy without anyone disturbing you before and after your treatment? Book a VIP room at a nominal charge of S$30 to S$40 per hour. What’s so great about the rooms that we should totally top-up for it, right?

Because it has a large TV screen all to yourselves, a huge sofa, wifi connection, and can even double up as a meeting space! No, really. We heard the businessmen love to go for their respective spa treatments, then adjourn to a semi-formal discussion while still reaping in the post-spa benefits and comfort.

And if the VIP rooms are not huge enough for you, there is a Seminar Room that extends over 500 sq.ft and can hold up to thirty people. Spa and work do sound like a good combination after all.

RELAXATION LOUNGE

Ample seats for you to sink in to relax. Go into slumber or simply zone out pre/post treatment; your body will thank you for that quality rest.

EAT ALL DAY, ALL NIGHT

Eat your fill; we mean it. The admission includes unlimited helpings of food from G-cafe that is within the same premise, and it is most definitely one of the biggest entitlement that worked for us. It is like buffet, except that you eat round the clock now!

So you might be skeptical about their food. We were, too. And we were actually expecting typical bland and healthy spa food; boy, were we so wrong. We actually gobbled up every dish that we ordered?! The menu comprises sandwiches, Asian and Western mains, vegetarian options, and a selection of beverages that include fresh fruit juices, ginger tea (their signature and our favourite) and your regular sodas.

The menu changes weekly so that regulars will always have something to look forward to, and our picks are most definitely the curry chicken and kong-bao chicken rice.

THE TREATMENT MENU

With so many facilities to distract us, we can hardly keep our focus on the spa services itself. But while we are still exploring them ourselves, we are happy to share that their signature ‘Gateway to Vitality’ is not popular without a reason. For those who fancy strong massages, this will have the masseurs going right for your pressure points.

The series of Chinese Meridian Therapy is also recommended for those who are seeking relief to body aches. Couple treatments are available too, and they are done in the privacy of couple rooms.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

24-HOUR ADMISSIONS AND RELAXATIONS

g.spa opens round the clock, in case you missed this part. Incredible and so very convenient. And their admission system works in our favour.

You see, as long as you book yourself for a treatment here at g.spa, even if it is just an hour-long massage, you are entitled to enjoy the facilities (and food) for 24 hours from the time you check in. We cannot think of a better deal than this, because you pay lesser than what you actually get!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Alternatively, there is also an a la carte admission that you may purchase if you just want to use the facilities and dine at G-cafe without having any spa treatments done. For non-members, it is S$68; members pay S$58. Whichever way, it is still cheaper than a night’s stay at a hotel, and this includes wifi and food!

EXCLUSIVE PROMOTION FOR LADYIRONCHEF READERS

Just for you readers of Ladyironchef, we have partnered with g.spa and are extending a promotion of S$50 off your main treatments (from now till 31 Jan 2016) when you quote “Ladyironchef” upon booking/ checking out.
There is no place like Bangkok when it comes to heavenly massages and pampering spa treatments. Sure, Asia has no lack of such indulging options, but Bangkok is the place to be if you want some rejuvenation.

You have your very cheap massages at an average THB 300 per hour; that’s S$10 per hour. Unheard of! And then you have the mid-tier ones that are slightly pricier, but what you get is a lush environment with detailed services from the moment you enter.

No trip to Bangkok is complete without a session, so here’s sharing 11 of the Best Thai Massage and Spas in Bangkok. You deserve the pampering.

#1 ASIA HERB ASSOCIATION

Asia Herb Association is hugely popular with the Japanese expatriate community in Bangkok. They offer a complete spa experience without the exorbitant price tag that you would usually associate with a luxury spa. And the menu is comprehensive – massages, body treatments, facials and more. You can also customize your session when you fill up the consultation form; let the therapists know your preferences and where you would like to focus on or are not comfortable with.

Rejuventate your body with a Herbal Aroma Oil Body Massage (THB 900/60 minutes) or a Herbal Facial Treatement (THB 1200/80 minutes). Its Asia Perfect for Body package (THB 2,340/2 hours 30 minutes) comes with a 60-minute Body Scrub, 60-minute 100% Pure Blend Oil Body Massage, and 30-minute Fresh Organic Herbal Ball treatment for body.

When in Bangkok, we’d like to set aside half a day for a relaxing session at Asia Herb Association. Appointments are recommended as they are really popular, and members enjoy a 5% discount off ala carte treatments – you can sign up as a member on the spot, and it is free, which makes it a really sweet deal.

Located on the 8th floor of Amari Watergate Bangkok – just across the street from Platinum Fashion Mall – Breeze Spa may seem like an unlikely place to go to for a spa treatment, but take step in to Breeze Spa and you will find yourself drifting away into an oasis of calmness. Spa treatments include traditional Thai massage, body polishing, facial treatments, as well as a half-day or a full day spa retreat.

If you are good to invest a bit more in a proper and luxe spa sesssion, why not make an appointment with Breeze Spa and head over after shopping at Platinum Fashion Mall? The idea of shopping and massage sounds perfect to us.

#3 CHANG FOOT MASSAGE & SPA

There are several Chang outlets, and though the experiences are pretty much hit-and-miss, we like this place for its convenience and friendly price list. We’ve tried both their Thai massage and Foot Reflexology, and while the “standard” really depends on the therapists, we can safely say that they are generally commendable for their foot reflexology.

At THB 250 per hour, your feet will thank you for that much-needed rub! Certain outlets open till really late too, so you can definitely pop by before supper.

#4 HEALTH LAND

Health Land may be a chain, but it is popular for a good reason. In fact, it is one of the most popular spas in Bangkok. There are various outlets in Bangkok, including Asok, Ekamai and Silom. Well, the scale of Health Land is impressive to say the least. The Asok branch is an eight-storied building with its own carpark.

While the interior of Health Land is very nicely done up – it feels more like a luxurious spa than a typical massage parlour – prices are surprisingly but pleasantly very reasonable, and a 2-hour traditional Thai massage is only THB 500, which is the standard market rate and what you would get when you walk into any parlour by the roadside. It is no wonder that Health Land is packed with customers everyday, and reservations are most definitely required.

#5 LEK MASSAGE

Another massage place that we frequent when in Bangkok is Lek, which is also on Siam Square Soi 6, opposite Novotel Hotel. But this is also a place where your luck will be put to a test – some therapists are masters, while a handful of them are very rude and we could feel it through their inconsistent strokes that they are plain reluctant and lazy.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Nonetheless, the massage house is still worth a try. They have the Traditional Thai Massage (THB 250/hour), but we highly recommend the Back, Shoulder & Neck Massage with Hot Compress (THB300 /hour). It is very effective, especially if you have knots in those areas.

#6 LET’S RELAX SPA

Another popular massage chain is Let’s Relax Spa. Its newest joint at Siam Square One is a huge space with both body massage and foot reflexology rooms. Just a tad more expensive – Thai massage (THB 500/hr), and foot reflexology (THB 400/45 mins) – than those regular ones by the street would charge, Let’s Relax Spa is for all who seek a quieter and cleaner environment.

To be most honest, we did not quite enjoy our sessions. But that is because Let’s Relax Spa is truly relaxing, and we happen to be fans of hardcore and strong massages. That said, if you prefer gentle rubs that will send you to slumber, then Let’s Relax Spa is the place for you.

Appointments are strongly recommended. And if you are looking at a 2-hour session, your treatment will end with a serving of mango sticky rice!

#7 LUXSA SPA HANSAR HOTEL BANGKOK

This is quite a hidden gem. Hansar Hotel at Ratchadamri is actually one of our favourites in Bangkok, and its Luxsa Spa is definitely unrivalled. The moment you set foot on the “wellness level”, you are in sanctuary. The therapists will take you through their various spa programmes and offerings, you pick your treatments from the extensive menu, and your pampering begins.

Set your mind free, soothe your senses, luxuriate in the holistic treatments and bid your stress and worries goodbye. Luxsa Spa does not come cheap, but it will be money well spent. Its signature Eastern Blend Massage is highly recommended.

#8 NUMBER ONE

After a long day of shopping at Platinum Fashion Mall and Pratunam Market, cross the road and head over to Number One which is tucked along Petchburi Soi 15. There are a few massage shops on the same stretch, but Number One is easily the best.

And yes, it is one of those “cheap” massage places with treatments that range from THB 250 to THB 400 per hour.

#9 URBAN RETREAT

Urban Retreat is more expensive than the usual massage parlours – THB 500 for an hour of traditional Thai massage – but it is still affordable, and it is one of the more well-known spas in Bangkok. Treatments include Head & Shoulder Massage, Aroma Oil Massage, and Hot Stone Massage. The Asok outlet, located just beside the BTS, is very accessible.

#10 SO SPA SOFITEL SO BANGKOK

Luxury spa options in Bangkok is aplenty, but if we have to streamline our options, then So SPA at the gorgeous Sofitel So Bangkok is in. The environment is one so inviting and we feel invigorated the moment we set foot on that level. Quiet and serene, with the scent of essential oil burning in the air.

The signature treatments include So Exhilarating Body Massage (THB 2,950/60 minutes), So Rejuvenating Facial (THB 3,200/60 minutes). For the ultimate experience, try the Turkish Hamman bath (THB 5,900/150 minutes) which combines a detoxifying hot steam, body scrub, body wrap and a Moroccan massage.

#11 WATPO THAI TRADITIONAL MASSAGE SCHOOL

The birthplace of traditional Thai massage, Watpo is as old school as you can find.
Talk about needing a spa session and the options are aplenty in Singapore.

From the Heavenly Bed to WestinWorkout to Heavenly Spa by Westin™, Westin is all about wellness. Loyal guests of the highly-acclaimed brand rejoiced when the Westin finally re-opened in Singapore. For those who have experienced the heavenly treatments at Westin Spas around the world, rejoice! Because we no longer have to fly overseas for the renowned spa experience.

Here are 7 reasons why Heavenly Spa by Westin™ at The Westin Singapore is indeed heavenly.

Enjoy the use of the spa treatment facilities

One of the basic spa etiquettes that we always reiterate is to arrive early – at least 30 minutes to an hour prior to the scheduled appointment time – so that you can familiarise yourself with the spa surroundings, to enjoy the facilities and to prep yourself for a great pampering session ahead.

The facilities at the Heavenly Spa by Westin™ will do wonders to recharge your soul and spirit. The vitality whirlpool is not only a relaxing spot, but it also comes with a view overlooking the town area. Give your body a break and go for a round in the Aromatherapy Steam Bath, and take a rinse with the Experience Shower.

Even the waiting room is a sanctuary

After your pre-spa steam room session and swim in the vitality pool, have a cup of tea and spend some time in quiet reflection in the waiting room before your spa treatment. And post-treatment snacking calls for dried super fruits and dark chocolates that can all be found in the waiting room. Don’t miss out on the freshly brewed ginger tea, too!

Luxuriously elegant and modern interior

From the moment you step in to Heavenly Spa by Westin™ at The Westin Singapore, you will put all your stress behind and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. An oasis of calmness with every detail reflecting true works of art, Heavenly Spa by Westin™ is well-designed and it sets the stage for a pampering experience. If this is not heaven, we do not know what is!

Spectacular views from the spa at level 35

Besides the vitality pool, the five treatment rooms at Heavenly Spa by Westin™ all come with spectacular views of our thriving city from level 35 of The Westin Singapore. The indulgent feeling is top of the world, literally. And for every moment, breathe in gratitude, let go of all unhappiness, and just savour the sheer heavenliness.

I’ve never been to nature spa, nor do I know much about one – until I went to the spa at Kayumanis Private Estate & Villa in Ubud, Bali. Perched atop the hills is a tranquil paradise that oversees the Ayung River and Lauh River of Ubud. And it truly reflects the essence of this traditional part of Bali.

Balinese spa is all about spiritual healing. The focus of Kayumanis spa is to embrace its roots and culture and brings to the world a true Balinese experience.

We began our spiritual journey with a welcome drink of rosella flower tea, and the affable spa manager did a run through of the spa itinerary for the day. Set for a 3-hour indulgence, quite aptly named ‘Spa Secrets’, we started with a tour around the in-house garden where they grow their own plants and herbs used in all the spa treatments. It was enriching to say the least.

Leading up to our pavilion is a stroll through nature so soul-healing that it brought much peace to us; just the perfect pre-spa prep. The pavilion is a designated couple room with shelter, complete with a toilet and shower facilities, and overlooks the lush greenery of Ubud.

And as our therapists cleansed our tired feet with sea salt scrub, we had a chat with them and found out that they are both villagers from the indigenous neighborhood. It surprised us to know that they are open to the cultural difference, and how they are grateful for the opportunities given to them at the spa. To help them progress upwards, the spa implements a Progressive Wage Model which helps the therapists improve along four ladders: wage, productivity, skills and career.

The therapists are given skills training to understand the various benefits of the treatments and how to serve each customer better. Therapists who cultivate good repeat customers are considered more productive and stand a better chance to get a promotion and pay raise.

And when we asked if they enjoy working for the company, they were all smiles and we got our answer. Kayumanis values every worker by having them feel like they work as a family, and are assets to the company. Most of the staff we spoke to have been in the company for incredible number of years – quite otherwise unheard of in Singapore – and this can only be achieved through cultivation of a healthy and happy working environment, coupled with quality staff welfare and appreciation.

This really stands in contrast to Singapore where some businesses still don’t have a Progressive Wage Model for their workers, but gladly they will soon have to implement this model in order to get their business licence.

Our hour-long Balinese massage was a relaxing one, with a combination of long strokes and pressure points focus to heal and recharge. Following which was a round of freshly-pounded scrub which comprised rice, lemongrass, turmeric, white ginger and candlenut. Exfoliation at its best, we’d say. And this was succeeded with a layer of fresh yogurt masque to deeply moisturise and soothe the skin.

Enjoying a spa treatment “in the outdoors” while relishing the sound of rain drops splattering gently was indeed an unparalleled delight. And we ended the ritual with a 30mins herbal bath where we soaked in a bath tub generously filled with fragrant herbs freshly hand-picked from the in-house garden.

This is the kind of experience that will be etched in our memories, for the sheer indulgence lies in the very simplicity of Mother Nature and people who truly love to render what they believe in.

This message is part of a ladyironchef x Labour Movement project where we seek to share with you insights on the different initiatives by the Labour Movement to give workers in Singapore better jobs, better pay and better work-life balance.

Singaporeans are all too familiar with this household name and its legion of beauty services at every other shopping mall, but do you know about Jean Yip Loft – the one-stop centre to have all your beauty and aesthetic needs attended to?

Stepping into the Jean Yip Loft does not feel very much different from the regular outlets in shopping malls, except that its space will wow you. The team was a warm and welcoming one who took us on a tour at the 6-storied building. With individual levels dedicated to Oriental Hair Solutions, facials, couple treatments and ladies only treatments, this full-fledged spa house offers an extensive menu at mid-range prices.

The interior of the building is that of a fuss-free but comfortable setting – dim lights, soft music, and the fragrance of essential oils. The rooms are small but intimate, and we really like the touch of purple lights that exuded a hint of romance as we settled in for a couple treatment.

We started off with an antioxidant berry sugar scrub. It not only removes dead skin cells, but also brightens and smoothens the skin. This was followed by a warm milk wrap to soothe and deeply moisturise the skin. The therapists slathered milk all over our bodies and covered us with a special cloth that aids in the penetration of the heat so as to maximise the effects of the milk bath. We ended the treatment with a relaxing scalp massage. Nothing too fanciful, but it was definitely a good midday treat for us.

And to end the day, Jean Yip Loft has a dedicated level that serves as a relaxation lounge. Sink in to the comfy seats and have some perk-me-ups like warm ginger tea and daily dessert freshly prepared daily. We really loved how a little treat like this really makes a whole lot of difference to the experience.

Be it facial hair solution, massage, foot and nail spa, Jean Yip Loft has it all covered. Why not give your partner and yourself a treat this weekend?

So, what is ‘spa’?

If you google it, or flip some textbooks, you will get the boring and typical stuff like spa is derived from the Latin term “Salus Per Aquam”, spa is “healing through water”… but if you ask me, spa is simply a necessary indulgence in life. Gone are the days when we only pay our masseur a visit once a year (or two); gone are the days when spa is so unreachable that only the rich and famous can enjoy.

Today, as we live in a cosmopolitan world and deal with so much stress, a spa session is very much needed and essential for our health and well-being. And with the spa scene around the world evolving and always scaling new highs, you will only be spoilt with options. Here is a Beginners Guide to Spa where we talk more about some of the basic spa etiquettes and various treatments.

Basic Spa Etiquettes:

1. Always reach 20mins earlier to check in, and to allow yourself ample time to familiarize with the facility, change and prep yourself with a cup of pre-treatment tea (usually hot ginger tea).

2. Don’t show up at a spa all sweaty from a gym session; it won’t be nice for both you and the therapist. Take a shower before your treatment if needed.

3. It is always courteous to keep your underwear on. Most treatments will require you to be almost naked, but will never need you to remove your underwear – especially the males.

4. You are there to relax and unwind. Keep your devices in the locker provided, or if you really need your phone, switch it to silent mode.

5. Communication is important. Tell your therapist your area(s) of concern, your pain tolerance, your preferred style(s) and whatnot. But just a note to not expect miracles, because even the most expensive treatment won’t restore you completely after just one session.

Types of Treatments:

1. Body Wrap – A form of mask to detox and/or hydrate, depending on the ingredients used. A mixture will be slathered all over your body, then literally have you wrapped for 20mins before you rinse off. Common ingredients used are seaweed, mud, shea butter and eucalyptus.

2. Body Scrub – An exfoliation process that leaves your skin glowing and boosts blood circulation. This treatment will be done with you lying on the treatment bed, intermittently but properly covered with towels while the therapist scrubs both sides of your body before you rinse off. Common ingredients used are salt and sugar in different scents.

3. Balneotherapy (or Baths) – A wet treatment that involves water, either hot or cold. No therapist is needed for this process – you soak in a special bath tub with water that is rich in salts that has healing properties, and the massage is done through the whirlpool current water to promote stimulation and relaxation.

4. Hot Stone – Typically a complement to your choice of massage, Hot Stone treatment aids in treating specific ailments such as a sore back or fatigued muscles. The stones are heated and placed on your pressure points/ areas of concern with a coat of essential oil, but do speak up if the heat is too much to bear. Also, if you are pregnant or have a sunburn, avoid this treatment.

5. Facial – There is always a list of facials to choose from, depending on your skin conditions and targeted result(s). Usually beginning with a consultation, your therapist will assess your skin before recommending you the treatment(s). And a typical facial session includes a thorough cleanse, an exfoliation and/or mask, massage and moisturizing.

6. Massage – Probably everyone’s favourite when we visit a spa, massage promotes relaxation and well-being through healing touches of the masseur. Different methods of kneading that can be applied with the hands, elbows, knees and even feet. The variations is aplenty, but for a start, if you are looking for a relaxing and soft massage that will send you to slumber, the common ones are Swedish, Aromatherapy and Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage. For the ones with higher tolerance for pain, opt for the Javanese and Thai. And for targeted concerns, there are choices that will cater to your preferred focal points, such as the Sports Massage, Shiatsu Focus and Lymphatic Drainage Massage.

With this, I hope you have gained a better understanding of what to expect and to prep you with some basic information so as to better choose a suitable treatment.

And if you need some recommendations, here are some spa articles that we have written in the past few months, featuring a range of affordable day spas to luxury spas to spas in the region.

There is no shortage of good spas in Singapore, but very few match up to the standards that ESPA at Resorts World Sentosa has set. An oasis nestled in Sentosa, ESPA has a wide range of spa treatments – from signature massages to facials, and body therapies – that can cater to all your needs and luxurious desires.

With a 10,000 square metre area, ESPA has the luxury of space and has hence created an enchanting sanctuary which will make you feel relaxed and at ease upon stepping in. The hint of fragrance in the air, the sounds of calm splashes from the water features and the gentle voices of the staff are little meticulous thoughts that attribute to experience; a lush positivity, I’d call that.

We suggest arriving at least an hour prior to your appointment and enjoy a pre-treatment soak in the Outdoor Vitality Pool and Cold Plunge Pool, designed specially to relieve muscle tension. Its Rock Sauna is also very unlike the typical saunas – it is bright and airy with a view of the pool and greens. For the ladies, there is also a steam room within the restroom, and a 10-minute steam bath is highly recommended to detoxify and to relax both body and mind before the proper treatment begins. ESPA has indeed delivered a fantastic spa experience with its beyond impressive facilities.

Following the pre-treatment relaxation was a 60-minute ESPA Personalised Massage, where we were driven by buggy to a private Beach Villa we called our own for the next 2 hours. Our therapists helped to assess our problem areas and advised on the most suitable massages for us, before they placed us on heated massage beds that overlooked the Keppel Bay. The view that we got while our therapists worked their magic on our bodies is one that is unrivalled and definitely the best one to have while enjoying an afternoon spa. And of course, the massage itself was strong and firm just like how we prefer, and had us feeling so free from tensed up shoulders and aching lower backs. The second hour that we had to ourselves was spent soaking up some sun while taking a short swim in the outdoor private pool. The villa also comes complete with shower facilities, so you can clean up before taking your leave.

If you are planning to give your partner a little surprise, a spa indulgence at ESPA cannot be more perfect. Whisk your partner off to this secluded corner of Resorts World Sentosa and enjoy some quality time together. You get to enjoy five-star spa treatment in a beautiful beach villa suite facing the sea – we cannot think of a better way to spend the weekend.

Just a note that the prices are more generally steeper than most spas, but every dollar that you pay will be well worth the splurge, and if money is not too big an issue, ESPA is undisputedly the ultimate spa destination in town.

Since 2009, we have been regulars of Aramsa, The Garden Spa at Bishan Park. Because we always walk out feeling so recharged and de-stressed, the brand has won our hearts and loyalty. Last year, the Asmara Lifestyle group introduced a new arm – The Spa Artisan at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore – and we paid a virgin visit to the luxury spa and had half a day of indulgence under the care of the dedicated staff.

Upon stepping in to the spa, we were warmly greeted by the exuberant receptionists. And because we were going for the newly-introduced PowerSlim, we had our body analysis done. We were very impressed because the staff were so fluent with the explanation of the body analysis, and we were given recommendations for treatments based on our body needs.

We understood from the consultant that he was previously from Aramsa, The Garden Spa. But because he had the opportunity for a job rotation, he accepted his new role at The Spa Artisan and underwent training and upgrading courses to better understand the more complex treatments offered here.

Not every worker gets a similar chance like this consultant to upskill and move up the career ladder, which is what the NTUC’s Progressive Wage Model (PWM) seeks to achieve. This is why NTUC is pushing for employers to adopt the PWM so all workers, regardless of job type, can benefit from career advancement and wage progression according to their productivity improvement and skills upgrading.

The staff at The Spa Artisan are all happy to be presented growth and personal development opportunities by their company. With such passion for their careers and so much enthusiasm for their roles, as patrons, we could truly feel the service from their hearts, and most definitely happy for them that the company values every worker.

After the body analysis, we proceeded with the PowerSlim treatment, which is a revolutionised method to efficient slimming by using synergising infrared radiation and ionisation with specially devised concept. It is said to be equivalent to 5 hours in the gym with what would only take 55 minutes in the PowerSlim studio.

The therapist helped to apply a special velvet cream on my targeted areas before I was put in the incubator-like machine. It was effortless, and the entire process was most definitely painless.

Next, we went for a 150mins Japan Spa Journey couple ritual. Priced at S$518+ per couple, it is one that encourages blood flow and promotes relaxation through the myriad of scents. The ritual began with a purifying wash and scrub. We were pampered with a fragrant yuzu mimosa algae wash, then an exfoliating gingergrass scrub. It was nothing fanciful, but certainly much needed.

Next was an hour-long full body massage and scalp massage. Choose from a tray of flower skin massage oil, including Moroccan Rose, Italian Blood Orange and Ocean. The supposed massage for the Japan Spa Journey is that of a relaxing one, but because we are both fans of strong massages, we opted for Shiatsu – which focuses on pressure points. Our masseurs were very well-trained and experienced – every stroke hit the right spot; every touch was so firm and strong. Not for the faint-hearted, surely, but if you can take the pain, we would highly recommend this option because it eases the body of all knots and tension, leaves you feeling a lot lighter.

This message is part of a ladyironchef x Labour Movement project where we seek to share with you insights on the different initiatives by the Labour Movement to give workers in Singapore better jobs, better pay and better work-life balance.

We have been to several spas in Bali, and while there is a great disparity between the shabby ones and the ones with impressive architectures, there is also a differentiation between the ones with good and better architectures. The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Bali boasts of one that is easily the nicest in the Jimbaran area, and the sheer space imprinted nothing but a fond impression and memory. The grandeur of its in-house spa is almost at the level of a destination spa, and though it is within the Four Seasons Resort Bali itself, stepping into the spa feels like stepping into a separate arena of luxury; a sanctuary of peace, relaxation and tranquility.

We settled for a couple villa that was complete with an outdoor bath tub and rain shower. Our therapists brought us to our villa after having us fill up a comprehensive form to better understand our basic health conditions, problem area(s) and strength preference. Very thoughtful, because a simple gesture like this makes a big difference to the overall experience of our massage session.

The room was well-furbished to the garden theme, and the atmosphere was set right to retreat into the much needed comfort – lavender and a hint of geranium burning and filling the air with an invigorating scent and soft spa tracks tinkling to a repertoire. Our thoughtful therapists went through the various ingredients that were to be used for our couple treatment, and had us choose from a selection of body scrubs and massage oils – all these while we soaked our feet in pans of warm water sprinkled with aromatic sea salt.

To kickstart the luxurious couple treatment, we had an exfoliating scrub that left our skin feeling clean and fresh, after which we were given some private time to soak in the lush bath tub covered completely with red rose petals. The floral bath was simple yet so rewarding for it served as a quiet time to take in all the marvels of the pampering session as we stared at the floating rose petals and listened to the birds chirp freely, all around us.

And the second half of the treatment was a relatively relaxing massage that sent us both to slumber. Our usual preference for massage is that of a strong and firm one to hit every pressure point, but because the couple treatment was meant to be an energising one for the souls, we were treated to a round of slow but long-strokes massage by the skilful Balinese.

Indeed, when at Bali, it is well worth the splurge to indulge in a holistic spa treatment. Take a little time off your holiday timetable, and dedicate a morning to restoring your soul. Place your faith in a professional luxury spa, and enjoy Four Seasons Resort Bali Spa.

Post-flight blues includes grouchiness, body aches and lethargy. And all we needed was some pampering at the spa house.

Stepping in to the quiet Celestine Spa at The Stones Hotel Bali, and being welcomed by cups of warm tea – the house brew ginger, lime and honey tea – immediately calmed our senses down by many notches. We were offered the signature The Stones Art Movement – a combination of long strokes, stretching and rocking.

Our session began with a foot bath, where we soaked our tired feet into a bowl of warm water filled with rose petals and lime. The therapists scrubbed and cleansed our feet and calves with in-house products (available for purchase at the reception), and further emphasized hygiene with a disinfecting foot mist before we stepped onto the therapy bed.

For the first-timers and everyone else who tend to be shy and conscious about baring your body to a complete stranger, you may cast your worries aside because the therapists are well-trained with the towels – they know just how and when to cover you transitionally so that the feeling of being exposed as they shift from one focal area to another is minimal.

The treatment itself was that of a relaxing one to restore the body, mind and soul. Having accessed our strength preferences prior to the massage, the therapists were firm with their strokes, and every pressure point was pressed hard to release the heat and stimulate blood circulation. My only two gripes were the missing bed warmer, and the long waiting time as the therapists walked around the room to fetch more hot stones.

Nonetheless, it was a rewarding hour-long indulgence and we left the spa without the aches we had when we stepped in. We were given fresh cups of tea, had a little privacy as we took warm showers before being bade goodbye by the very affable receptionist. A simple and fuss-free day spa like this is quite enough to have us prepped for a stay at the beautiful Marriott.

Talk about eco-friendly toiletries and we all think of The Body Shop. We are no strangers to their ever popular Shea Butter, Olive and White Musk products. But do you know they have a spa, too?

Tucked at a quiet corner of the Paragon outlet, The Body Shop Green Sanctuary is a small day spa that offers decent relaxing treatments at prices that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. With 4 massage rooms and 1 steam room, it is ideal for a simple retreat. Busy executives working in the area who need a recharge during lunch hour, shoppers who are in the vicinity and need a massage from all the walking, mothers who are waiting for their kids to be dismissed from school… there is surely a treatment to cater to everyone’s needs.

So people may wonder, why is there a need to go to The Body Shop Green Sanctuary when they can just buy the products at a much lower price and do a DIY spa at home? With a concise menu of scrubs, massages and facials, you will be pampered by the team of experienced therapists who are well-trained with product knowledge and skills for a complete professional experience.

The massage rooms are simple and cosy, with wooden elements to enhance the organic feel, and a blend of lavender and geranium essential oil burning subtly to soothe the senses. The 90mins Spa Wisdom African Body Treatment (S$120) is highly recommended for the ladies while the gentlemen can opt for the 75mins Vitamin Cold Compress facial (S$95).

The 90mins spa comprises a full-body scrub to exfoliate and thoroughly cleanse your skin, followed by a 15-minute steaming session. The enclosed machine opened up the pores quickly and the products were well-absorbed into the skin, leaving it extremely moisturised. The second part of the treatment was a very impressive full body massage. The masseur, Sally Ang, was truly skilful and with her long strokes and firm touches, all the prevailing body aches were gone. Body lotion from the Spa Wisdom range was used to massage the hands and the legs, while massage oil was used for the shoulders and back because it is lighter in texture, hence minimising the risk for a breakout. Very meticulously executed, indeed.

As for the facial, it was a pleasant experience. We started with a facial analysis, and after the therapist determined the problem areas, she would recommend the suitable treatment for the skin type. The facial uses The Body Shop’s Vitamin C range of products and it aims to refresh and revive the skin. The therapist was attentive and ensured that we were comfortable throughout the session. The skin felt rejuvenated after the treatment.

If you are a big fan of The Body Shop products, you must go for a treatment at The Body Shop Green Sanctuary. Reservations are required.

Given the hectic lifestyle that most people lead, I have always believed that spa treatments are not an indulgence, but a necessity in life.

Bali is known for many things – white-sand beaches, amazing sunset spots, fantastic restaurants and bars. But Spa reigns the list as the top favourite. The next time you are in Bali, and in need of a pampering, head to Shine Spa at Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort for a wholesome spa treatment.

Like what you would expect from any good spa, Shine Spa for Sheraton encourages guests to arrive early to enjoy the sauna and whirlpool prior to the treatment.

Immediately upon entering the spa, I felt at ease with light and calming music lopping in the background. My therapist was attentive to my needs, and she managed to find and relieve the tensions effortlessly. To me, a good massage is when it sends you to slumber. And that was the case at Shine Spa. I fell asleep shortly after the start of the massage, and when I woke up, my body felt so much lighter.

Not only does Shine Spa has the traditional Balinese massages, but they also have a range of signature treatments – blending from the east to the west with local Balinese touches – which include the Shine Massage (Rp 400,000/S$52 for 60 min), Shine Facial (Rp 580,000/S$75 for 60 min), Shine Body Treatment (Rp 450,000/S$58 for 60 min), and if you are there with your partner for a romantic getaway, go for the Shine for Two (Rp 420,000/S$54 for 60 min).

What makes Shine Spa for Sheraton a place you can return to again and again is that you do not have to spend a bomb for a treatment here. For a luxurious 5 star hotel spa, the prices are very affordable. Shine Spa should be at the top of your list when you are staying in the Kuta area.
