Lau Wang Claypot has closed its original outlet in Serangoon Central.

It first started as a small stall in Yishun before opening its full-fledged eatery in Serangoon. Lau Wang is best known for its variety of yummy claypot dishes that are really affordable and delicious.

There are many dishes to choose from, ranging from spicy sambal prawns to their signature sesame chicken—all of which are freshly made to order over a hot wok, which gives each dish a complex savoury flavour and charred aroma.

Fans of Lau Wang Claypot can still visit them at their other outlets at Oasis Terraces, Tampines 1, Singpost Centre, Bugis+, as well as two new outlets at Pasir Ris Mall and Plantation Plaza @ Tengah. They also have another sister brand, Lau Wang Claypot Legacy at One Holland Village.

Opened by the team behind The Brewing Ground in Joo Chiat, RIANG is a new casual dining concept along Jalan Riang, in the Serangoon neighbourhood which doles out brunch, larger mains, coffee and cocktails. It officially opens to the public today (2 Nov 2022).

RIANG is taking over the space by the former Babba (which is also by The Brewing Ground). This came as as a surprise as the now-defunct Peranankan cafe & restaurant only opened in late Feb this year, and it seems too soon to forgot a new concept like that.

Well, maybe the Peranankan concept didn’t work out and the owners have more exciting plans for RIANG.

From brunch classics, larger mains and all-day desserts, RIANG’s extensive menu has something for everyone.

You can come here for brunch and coffee in the day and communal-style sharing plates with cocktails in the evening.

Some of RIANG’s signatures include the Ultimate Breakfast Burger (S$20), Homemade Quiche (S$10) and Crab Mayo Croissant (S$18) from the brunch menu, and the Hot-Fried Chicken Burger (S$17) and Potato & Leek Croquette Burger (S$16) in the lunch menu.

Another thing to look forward to is RIANG’s all-day dessert menu, which features plated desserts by the in-house pastry team.

Ah Seah Teochew Porridge, a popular Teochew Porridge eatery at Teck Chye Terrace (near Serangoon and Kovan), is closing on 19 June 2022.

The founder, Ah Seah, first started his Teochew porridge stall at the now-defunct Lim Tua Tow market in the 1950s and they relocated several times over the years before settling at the current location at Teck Chye Terrace for the past 11 years.

Other than Ah Seah Teochew Porridge, there are also several eateries located along Tech Chye Terrace and they include 8 degrees Taiwanese cafe, Yaowarat Seafood, Jangsu Korean BBQ Restaurant and Amika Cafe.

Ah Seah Teochew Porridge offers more than 50 variety of dishes, including braised dishes, stir-fried vegetables and steamed fish. The signature dishes include minced pork, handmade fish cake, and stingray.

Amika Cafe & Bar is the newest cafe to open in the Serangoon neighbourhood, taking over the space vacated by Two Bakers at 9 Teck Chye Terrace.

It opened on 8 May 2022 with a soft-launch menu serving all-day brunch, Asian-inspired mains and drinks.

On Amika Cafe & Bar’s menu, you can find the usual brunch fare including Eggs Benedict (S$22), Big Breakfast (S$20) and Breakfast French Toast (S$16.50).

The Bread Rack is an artisan bakery cafe near Serangoon and Kovan which specialises in freshly-baked sourdough, croissants and baguette.

It opened earlier in January this year and it has already garnered a following amongst residents in the neighbourhood for its delicious croissants and pastries.

The Bread Rack is located at Space@Kovan which also has other food places including Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee, PokPok Keh and P.Osh brownies.

They bake everything on premise daily and you can be assured of the freshness of their bakes.

Other than a selection of croissants, sourdough, baguette and country loaf, you can also get croissant sandwiches as well as breakfast platter.

We had the Butter Croissant (S$3.8) and Almond Croissant (S$4.8). The crisp layers flaked away nicely as you bit into the super buttery and airy croissants.

The Bread Rack certainly has one of the best croissants you can get in Singapore.

Jangsu Korean BBQ is a humble Korean restaurant located in Serangoon and it is run by a Korean couple. The restaurant serves affordable and super yummy food and pride themselves in using 100% aged meats that are juicy, tender and fresh. You can also expect flavourful seasoned meats that have been marinated with their secret recipe there.

Serangoon is filled with a myriad of good food and this Korean restaurant adds to the list. Here’s why you have to be sure to visit this restaurant for an authentic Korean BBQ experience!

They offer 3 different type of BBQ sets that differ in the types of meat and marinade. We had Set C (S$54) that comes with Beef Sirloin, Soy Sauce Pork Shoulder, Pork Belly and Spicy Chicken, and it also includes complimentary Steamed Eggs and choice of soup (Kimchi Soup, Soybean Soup or Tofu Soup).

The Kimchi Soup was one of the better ones we’ve had in recent times as many places tend to water down their soup too much. It was so rich in flavour, not too sour, slightly spicy, and had chunks of tofu and pork belly.

The meat were all so tender. Even when the beef was left on the grill for a longer period of time, it did not get tough nor become a jaw-breaker.

The samgyeopsal (pork belly) was just cut to the right thickness and had a good ratio of meat to fat. The pork juices were well-retained which brought out the fragrance of the meat immensely. The burst of flavours made every bite so pleasant.

Some oyster mushrooms and onions were served alongside the meat, wrap them up in a lettuce wrap to add textures for a satisfying mouthful.

We have not tasted pork shoulder so tender that it was almost soft before. However, still with a good bite to it. It had a sweet taste that lingers on your tongue but nothing too overbearing! The lady boss told us that no sugar was added in this marinade, however we think it might have been honey that was used to bring out the sweet flavours.

The Spicy Chicken had just a teeny-weeny kick of spice, suitable even for those who cannot take spice.

A special mention for their amazing banchan (side dishes) – there were braised potatoes, oyster mushrooms, kimchi, beansprouts, tofu in soy sauce, oden and a salad. We always appreciate a Korean restaurant that’s generous with their banchan.
