Great news for fans of Toast Hut, they have reopened a new eatery in Bukit Merah with air conditioning and other than their famous kaya toast and kopi, the new Toast Hut is also offering fried beehoon, noodle, porridge during breakfast and economic rice during lunch.

Old Airport Road Food Centre was temporarily closed for renovation during last year and the owner Melvin Soh decided to end Toast Hut due to manpower issues. Thankfully for all of us, Toast Hut finally managed to find a bigger eatery in Jalan Bukit Merah.

For those of you who are not familiar with Toast Hut, it started as a humble hawker stall at Old Airport Road Food Centre. The owner of Toast Hut has been perfecting his craft of making the best kaya toast and traditional kopi since he was 23 years old.

What sets Toast Hut’s Kaya apart from the usual is that it adopts a less sweet approach as Melvin thought that a kaya spread that is less sweet would complement the taste of traditional coffee better.

It is one of the best kaya toasts you can get in Singapore and you are definitely missing out if you haven’t tried it before.

The new Toast Hut is also selling economic rice during lunch to provide their regulars with more options.

If you are working or staying in the Bukit Merah neighbourhood, do drop by Toast Hut to support them!

For those who are working in the Bukit Merah and Alexandra neighbourhoods, you’d definitely know how difficult it is to find a spot to dine at (and one which serves up good food) during the lunch hour. With the eatery’s roots dating back to 2006, Joe’s Thai Kitchen at Alexandra Village has received much praise for their authentic Thai dishes over the years.

Drop by Joe’s Thai Kitchen for authentic and legit Thai food with no additional GST charges.

Joe’s Thai Kitchen is a casual Thai eatery at Alexandra Village headed by a Thai Chef and his Singaporean wife.

Joe’s Thai Kitchen keeps things simple and easy so you won’t find any sort of extravagant decor in this eatery. Their walls are kept largely bare, and their tablecloths are reminiscent of the old-school tablecloths that we grew up with. Given this, you know that this eatery focuses their attention on what’s important — the food.

When we visited, we had to order one of our favourite Thai dishes — the Rice with Basil Leaf Minced Pork & Egg (S$8.90). Although the minced pork was on the salty side, this was balanced by the sweetness of the basil leaves. However, if you’re someone who isn’t fond of spicy food, we’d recommend you to proceed with caution as the Rice with Basil Leaf Minced Pork & Egg was spicier than we expected.

How can you dine at a Thai restaurant without ordering some green curry? As compared to the other green curries in Singapore which feature quite a fair bit of coconut milk to suit the Singaporean palate, Joe’s Thai Kitchen kept their version of the green curry closer to what you’d find in Thailand. Their Green Curry Chicken (S$8.80) featured significantly lesser coconut milk which allowed the spices of the green curry to shine. This is authentic Thai food at its best.

You can’t go wrong with ordering Tom Yum soup, and Joe’s Thai Kitchen’s rendition of this dish met our expectations The Tom Yum Nam Kone (Original Orange Soup Base) with Seafood (S$8.50).

Whilst Joe’s Thai Kitchen served a decent portion of soup, we would have liked for the soup to have come with slightly more ingredients. As compared to some other local Thai restaurants, the flavours of fish sauce featured more prominently in the broth so don’t be surprised when you have your first taste of the soup.

Located in the HDB estate of Jalan Bukit Merah and right across ABC Market is a relatively new kid on the block – an artisanal ice cream parlour called Geometry that boasts freshly handcrafted gelato with zero artificial ingredients and preservatives.

From Dark Chocolate Truffle to Earl Grey Tie Guan Yin, the glorious variety of flavours will make you dizzy with glee.

Gone were the days where ice cream parlours are confined to the spaces of shopping malls. Instead, we are seeing an increasing number of young F&B entrepreneurs turning to the heartlands when it comes to picking a venue for their cafes.

Rustic and simple, Geometry’s intimate space is indeed incredibly inviting; think wooden benches, overhanging filament bulbs, geometric-inspired ceiling lamps and potted plants.

The prices here at Geometry are considered wallet-friendly. A single scoop costs S$3.20, a double scoop costs S$5.50, while every subsequent scoop would incur another S$2.50. Do note that you will have to top up S$0.70 for a premium flavour and an additional S$0.80 to have your ice-cold dessert served in a cone.

Treat yourselves to a Belgian Waffle with a Single Scoop Ice-cream (S$8.50). The waffles are crisp on the outside, decadently fluffy on the inside – exactly what a great waffle should be! We paired the golden brown treat with a scoop of Strawberry Pocky ice cream. The premium ice cream is essentially a refreshing strawberry cream infused with raspberry crunch.

Other outstanding gelato flavours include the Hojicha and the Milky Way. The former is a roasted Japanese Green Tea ice-cream from Uji, while the latter is a rich milk based ice-cream tangled with brownies and popping candies swirl.

Just beside the “old-school” Love confectionery at Alexander Village which I just recommended, there’s another one by the name of Chinatown Tai Chong Kok Confectionery.

Egg cupcake ($1 for 3 small one)

I’m a devotee after just one bite of their egg cupcake. Soft, light, and fluffy, the egg cupcakes are really very good. And 3 for one dollar is cheap okay! I can easily finish half a dozen on my own. Gosh, i’m going to get more of them the next time.

Egg cupcake with red bean fillings ($1 for 1 big)

There’s also the bigger egg cup cake, which had red bean paste fillings at the bottom. But i was rather disappointed with it because there wasn’t anything special with the red bean paste, and the filling was just a little. I’ll think that three small ones are more than a big one, so take the 3 small one for a dollar instead.

Red bean biscuit

Their red bean biscuit was also worth the try, crispy pastry skin with generous fillings of the red bean paste.

Egg tart

Initially i was unsure about the egg tart because it didn’t seem to be very nice. But boy I had to take back my words after eating it. The egg custard was those watery kind, smooth and eggy!

The constant upgrading and renovation of our heartlands, together with the ageing of the older chefs will mean that many delicious food will be soon extinct, and forever gone from us. We have seen many of your favourite childhood hawker stalls, and the old-school bakeries disappearing from our sight.

Love confectionery is located just beside the Alexander Village food centre, opposite of Queensway shopping centre. Having been there for very long, I knew about its presence before, but just didn’t pop in, until now.

Cream puffs ($0.40 each)

The cream puffs was merely 40 cents each, yes 40 cents! They came in two flavours, cream and custard. We immediately grabbed half a dozen of this, and looked around to see if there’s other steals, but to our disappointment, most of the their other bakes were sold out already.

The custard puffs were not too bad, i wasn’t too sure whether i’ll like them or not, so i only had two out of the six i got. The eggy taste was evidently present, and you could do yourself no harm since they are only 40 cents each.

The cream puff was good, the pastry skin was soft and fluffy, the only gripe – it wasn’t sinful enough. Of course you can’t compare it with the one at Beard Papa with such a big differential in price, but i did find that the cream used here wasn’t that fantastic, if only it’s made with the superior Japanese cream.

I think i’m asking too much for a cream puff which was 40 cents. Given the price, and the nostalgic of the cream puff, do grabbed a dozen the next time round.

Butter cakes ($0.90 each)

They also had two types of butter cakes that day, with the body being the same, peanut and almond separating both. It’s so old-school! The butter cake was very soft, and to say it melt softly with a deft bite wasn’t exaggerating.

Total bill was $4.80 for half a dozen cream puffs and two slices of cakes. They have other type of bakes, but it was either sold out or wasn’t available when i was there that day. I’ll probably get a dozen of those cream puffs the next time i’m in the area. And oh by the way, just to not mislead you, they don’t serve the pastry there, i brought them home to put on nice plates for the photos!
