A hidden gem along New Upper Changi Road, Izumi Japanese Fish Market has successfully packaged affordability together with quality in their Bara Chirashi Don (S$11.80).

Other than the Bara Chirashi Don, it also has other donburi on the menu—the cheapest donburi on the menu is only S$5.50!

At just S$11.80 per bowl, Izumi Japanese Fish Market’s Bara Chirashi Don is prepared à la minute and you can watch the skilled chefs slice your sashimi right before your eyes.

We were extremely impressed by the generous portions of fresh seafood—which includes salmon and tuna, grilled unagi, crab stick, fish roe and seaweed strips.

However, simply calling this a value-for-money meal understates how wonderful this don was. The presentation of the Bara Chirashi Don was on point and the rice to sashimi ratio was perfect. There was just the right amount of marinade with the sashimi, which drew out the true flavours of the fish.

Throw in the grilled texture and light teriyaki marination of the grilled unagi, Izumi Japanese Fish Market’s Bara Chirashi Don was an absolute stunner that we would be thrilled to have again.

As mentioned earlier, Izumi Japanese Fish Market offers a range of affordable donburi that start from as cheap as S$5.50.

Some of them include Salmon Teriyaki Don (S$6.80) and Anago Don (S$9). A selection of sides is also available, such as Takoyaki (S$5 for 10 pieces) and Urchin Flavoured Ball (S$4).

Izumi Japanese Fish Market also sells freshly packaged sashimi which can be sliced and enjoyed on-site upon request.

A humble and unassuming dining establishment with incredibly affordable prices, Izumi Japanese Fish Market is truly the emblem of the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover”.

We present you the insanely pretty Unicorn Donuts. Fresh Fruits Lab is the first in Singapore to introduce a donut ice-cream sandwich – well, it is quite literally so. Please, just take our money already.

It is in the whimsicality that reminds us of a unicorn – mystical, wild, and legendary. Premium ice-cream tucked in between fluffy homemade donuts, then lusciously covered in chocolate and all sorts of happiness. The Unicorn Donuts are a brilliant invention, and we couldn’t care less about other supper food anymore.

They come in an assortment of five flavours – The Original (S$6), Oreo & Cream (S$9), Fresh Fruits (S$9), Chocolate & Nuts (S$9), and the one that drove us nuts – Snack Donut (S$9). The fickle-minded ones and the gluttons can go straight for the Unicorn Donut Platter (S$19) that comes with two flavoured donut and an Original.

It is honestly not difficult to fall in love, and to know that they are limited by the day meant there is no hesitating about supper already; JUST DO IT.

It was lovely to step into the quaint little coffee house, Collective Brewers, along the rather quiet Changi Road on a weekday afternoon. The interior was spacious with very ample sunlight flowing in. We could also catch a whiff of the aromatic coffee being served to other customers.

While we came specifically for the Cold Drip coffee, we saw a ton of awesome hot food on the menu; think pastas and burgers.

So here’s sharing some simple thoughts on what we liked about Collective Brewers – yes yes yes, their coffee please.

It is no surprise that the name ‘Collective Brewers’ means that this humble little cafe specialises in coffee. They have a variety of different coffee, but we came for their Cold Drip (S$5). Made in a similar way to the cold brew coffee, we were served the chilled coffee in a small glass.

It looked like an espresso shot and we were guessing that it was probably because it served the same ‘effects’. The coffee itself was intense with a smooth fluidity throughout, and with a balanced acidity. We slurped the cup down after the first taste sip and were pumped up for the rest of the day.

The interior was so comforting and conducive, and we will return to try the food. Meanwhile, do you know they have a crazy-looking Pandan Chicken Burger that comes with a green patty? As dubious as that might sound, we actually will head back to try it.

Situated at the far end of The Oasis and across the gorgeous Capri By Fraser, Changi City is RessRoom, a six-month-old restaurant-cum-bar with an ambitious aim of catering to all food lovers.

Hot favourites include the mouthwatering French classic Duck Confit. The duck meat is slow cooked until meltingly tender and its skin pan-seared to a golden brown crisp. The poultry sits on a bed of soft mashed potatoes with orange sauce and served with a generous portion of sautéed mushrooms.

The King Prawn Aglio Olio (S$19.90) is also a crowd pleaser – the gigantic Myanmar imported King Prawn is cooked in a char-broiler and served with stir-fried aglio olio. Meat lovers should not miss out on the Lamb Shank and Char-grilled Peri Peri Chicken.

The all-encompassing menu extends its audience to those of vegetarian diets and even the little ones. Our picks have got to be the wagyu nigiri – quality beef that is so rich in flavour and well-marbled, the salmon aburi that is torched to perfection, and sweet makis with creamy avocado and soft-shelled crab. Itacho Sushi always satisfies.

Gurney Drive (T3 Public Area)

Gurney Drive presents the best of Penang hawker food like Penang laksa, prawn noodles, and char koay teow – which was, in particular, quite a plate of heaven with a generous serving of juicy prawns and sausages atop rice noodles. The food is pretty authentic and pleasantly affordable.

Pork base, chicken base, miso base… whatever you are feeling, Ramen Champion has a bowl to feed that craving. Our favourite has got to be Keishoken by Chef Kazuo Sukuraoka, who exhibited his concept of colors via the toppings – black, red, orange and yellow. The red topping deserves a special mention for its sizzling spiciness atop rich pork broth.

Saboten (T1 Public Area)

Tonkatsu is ever popular, and Saboten does theirs well. Which explains why they are always packed, but we really would not mind the wait just to have a serving of the gorgeously-fried hire Katsu (pork tenderloin cutlet); we never leave Saobten without a serving of that. And the cheese katsu is a fabulous alternative that we always add-on, too! The various sets is another reason why Saboten is an ideal option for families.

Seafood Paradise (T2 Public Area)

If you need your crab fix before your holiday, or if you are returning from a holiday with a major craving for our local crabs, head to Seafood Paradise and indulge in a luxurious seafood spread. Crabs aside, we really love their cheese lobsters – fresh, chunky crustaceans lavishly soaked in a bed of cheese. Eat it with deep-fried mantou! Also, the cuttlefish with kangkong is a favourite among locals, too!

Tai Hing is one of the most well-known roast meat restaurants in Hong Kong, with more than 30 branches dishing out its much-lauded roast goose and other cooked dishes. There are also educational corners and individual enclosures which will give you more insights into the life cycle of a butterfly. And if you are lucky, you will be able to catch the birth of a butterfly as it emerges from the pupa.

#2 Take a stroll at the Sunflower Garden

A Sunflower Garden in the airport? This is surely one thing in Changi Airport that most people never knew about. No flower quite like the sunflower to brightens up our days. The next time you are in Changi Airport, remember to drop by the rooftop sunflower garden at level three of departure transit lounge at Terminal 2.

#3 Catch a free movie at the theatre

If you have some time to spare before your flight, why not catch a show at the movie theatre? Movie buffs will be delighted to know that the movie theatres are open 24 hours daily, and the screenings are free!

The movie theatres can be found at Terminal 2′s departure transit lounge south on level three, and at Terminal 3′s department transit lounge north on level three. The films are all up to date and we swear by the comfort level of the seats, too! The movies at terminal 2′s theatre are from FOX movies, while the ones from Terminal 3′s theatre are recently released movies specially curated by the team at Changi Airport.

#4 Play games at the Entertainment Deck

The Entertainment Deck at the departure transit lounge at level 3 of Terminal 2 has an array of entertainment facilities such as Xbox Kinect Room, MTV booth, XBOX360 and Playstation 3 consoles, music area and the aforementioned movie theatre.

#5 Watch the latest sports events at the Xperience Zone

Sports lovers can head to the Xperience Zone to watch the latest sports events on large screen in the comfort of plush, cushioned seats which come with its own set of speakers for a surround sound experience.

#6 Kids’ Friendly Playgrounds

For families with kids in tow, Changi Airport has several children’s playgrounds at the three terminals. Your kids can not only make new friends with the other kiddos, but also run around in comfort – a great way for them to work off their excess energy so that you can enjoy a peaceful flight later.

#7 Go for a slide

Singapore’s tallest slide, The Slide @ T3 is a four-storey tall slide, and is every kid’s favourite playground.
