PINEAPPLE TARTS (330g/16pcs)

Delicately crafted, each spherical tart hides within its golden crust a brimming core of pineapple jam. Holding a splendid balance of flavours, each bite brings about a lingering sweetness; one that is rich enough to excite the palate yet light enough to keep the flavour from saturating.

SAMBAL SHRIMP ROLLS (300g)

Welcomed for its textural and taste contrast against the other two treats, these crispy rolls are a wonderful addition to any Lunar New Year snack table. Past the initial crunch, these rolls break apart to reveal a fine, savoury stuffing of fried shrimps and chilli. Suitable for the spice-shy as well, the inherent spice is moderated by a dash of sweetness.

CASHEW NUTS COOKIES (380g)

Crumbly with an intense nutty profile, these buttery treats are a delight to pop, and pair even better with a cup of tea. Satisfying addictive in its duality, the bite from the roasted cashew allays the monotony of its soft base, and invites an additional dimension of saltiness against the predominantly sweet and nutty profile.

EMERI PINK MOSCATO (LIMITED EDITION PACKAGING BY DE BORTOLI)

A lush, fruity alcoholic number, this sparkling rosé wine is a fantastic accompaniment to your Lunar New Year celebrations. Captivating in its pale pink hue, the Moscata offers an equally refreshing and uplifting flavour profile. Expect each glass to be perfumed with vibrant notes of strawberries and musk.

GOLD MOSCATO TEA LEAVES BY GRYPHON (30g)

Sought after for its rarity, the leaves produce a medium-bodied bright copper brew speckled with gold dust. Complex in flavour and incredibly fragrant, this white tea is infused with a gentle floral note, within which the ripened muscat grapes add a bitter-sweet aromatic intensity to. A truly opulent taste experience.

PRESERVED DECORATIVE FLOWERS IN MINIATURE VASE (ONLY FOR THE FIRST 200 SETS)

Awash in the colours of spring, these flowers are a lively addition to any space. Preserved for longevity, place this vase within easy view for a beautiful centrepiece that brightens up not just the room, but the moods of those residing in it as well.

The flowers are in collaboration with FEO Grace – the social enterprise arm of Far East Organization.

SEASONAL EDITION CANVAS TOTE BAG BY THE MARMALADE PANTRY

PU-leather lined and finished with a graceful flourish, this bag can easily transform into a one suitable for daily use. Roomy, sturdy, and stylish, this ivory tote will ensure that you remain effortlessly in vogue in all seasons

February may be the shortest month of the year, but that doesn’t mean that there is any lack of activities out there to keep you entertained. With some pretty major holidays such as Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day creeping up on us, get ready for a never-ending list of events that will keep you on your toes.

Prepare your calendars and mark down these special dates, because while you may be busy with all the New Year festivities, gambling and feasting, you should take some time off to have a go at some of the other exciting things that February has in store for you.

From the annual Chingay Parade to seeing popular Kpop girl-group BLACKPINK perform live, buckle up because February is going to be one roller coaster of a good time!

ANTI-VALENTINE’S VALENTINE’S DAY @ HUSTLE CO

Valentine’s day is always so overly-hyped up every year — all the flowers, mushy photos of couples making out, overpriced dinners and expensive gifts. It can quite sickening, especially for singles.

If all you single ladies (and men) feel a little forgotten, fret not, as Hustle Co, a bar tucked away at Tanjong Pagar, will be having an event called Anti-Valentine’s Valentine’s Day where there will be cheap S$6.90 craft beers and affordable dinner items. Definitely sounds like our kind of Valentine’s Day!

BLACKPINK is no doubt one of the hottest k-pop groups in the world right now and it is no surprise; it is pretty hard to resist these pretty yet sexy girls with their angelic voices and mesmerising dance moves.

If you’re a BLACKPINK fan, good news for you is that you get to catch them performing live this February at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. For all you fanboys out there, treat this as a little Valentine’s Day gift to yourself!

This year’s theme, Dreams Funtasia, features an impressive 270m-long painting depicting the past, present and future of Singapore as well as dancing dragons, stilt walkers, wushu masters and so much more. No wonder is one of the biggest events of the year!

The Chinese Lunar New Year sees a culmination of many things. Family gatherings, thematic costumes, lion dance displays, feasting and so much more. As millennials, we go through the motion of things year after year but has anyone actually stopped to understand why certain traditions and practices even exist in the first place?

Take the iconic yu sheng toss for example. It’s more than just a group of rowdy folks screaming and tossing food in the air in a barbaric fit. In fact, it is a tradition with so much meaning and positivity around it.

To ensure traditions live on, here is our guide to 8 Chinese New Year traditions that every millennial should know.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

For families who are large in size, it can take weeks of planning as tables fill up fast at popular restaurants. Even those who are having their reunion dinner at home have to spare much effort in grocery shopping and preparation of the dishes.

STAYING UP PAST MIDNIGHT

Parents usually urge their children to stay up until midnight after the reunion dinner to send away the old year and welcome the new. It is believed that the longer the children stay awake at night, the longer their parents will live in return.

FIREWORKS

While most people think that fireworks are just showstoppers for entertainment, there is actually meaning behind it. Fireworks were first introduced into the festival in China to drive away evil spirits.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#2 USE SMALLER PLATES

There is a limit to how much you can pile your food up on a plate. Hence the smaller your plate is, the less food you can take—unless you cheat and go back for more servings. Which you know you shouldn’t be.

#3 PICK FOOD THAT ARE RICH IN FIBRE

Food rich in fibre takes longer to be fully digested, therefore keeping you fuller or a longer period of time. Choose your food wisely if you do not want to end up snacking every 30 minutes.

Vegetables, fruits and whole grains are great fillers that do not give you unnecessary calories!

#4 LIMIT YOUR ALCOHOL INTAKE

Alcohol is actually good for health when consumed moderately. It reduces the risk of heart diseases and may also reduce your chances of getting a stroke.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

That being said, weight gain is just one of the few negative consequences should you over-consume alcoholic beverages. Try to limit yourself to only one glass for that night.

#5 SIT AWAY FROM THE FOOD

If you are one who is easily tempted, sit as far away as possible from the dining table or kitchen once you are done with dinner. This is especially important when there are so many traditional Chinese New Year snacks (which are loaded with calories) available.

You will find it a hassle to keep walking long distances to get the snack and may give up on snacking altogether.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#6 YOU DON’T HAVE TO FINISH EVERYTHING

Did you know the Chinese believe that abundance represents an excess of good fortune for the year? This is the reason why Chinese New Year feasts are always prepared so generously and in large portions.

The amount of food prepared by the host is usually more than enough!

#7 KNOW THE CALORIE COUNT OF YOUR SNACKS

Still want to eat? Go on, we won’t stop you.

But please take a look at this guide to the Calories in 12 Popular Chinese New Year Snacks.

Every year, there are festivities and occasions that we look forward to, because those are times when we would gather with our loved ones over good food. Chinese New Year is one of them, and family dinners are so precious.

Because it is a yearly tradition, we always pick the best restaurants for our dinners. Well, there is no need to scrimp when it comes to treating your family, yes?

Mitzo is a perennial favourite among each and everyone in our family, and its Lunar feast is nothing short of luxurious and resplendent.

We had first dips of the set menus and boy, you need to bring your family there. The modern Cantonese cuisine will wow both the young and old.

PROSPERITY DELIGHTS MENU

Most Chinese restaurants do huge set menus and you need an arsenal in order to dine, but Mitzo recognised the need for smaller menus because, well, a couple is a family too.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The Prosperity Delights I is a set menu for two (or more), and it is priced at S$128+ per person. It is also a menu with most of our favourites. In this menu, you get 6 items, ranging from soup to rice & noodles to desserts.

We were so won over by the soup. You may be puzzled; of all items, soup? Yes, soup—the Fish Maw Soup with Pumpkin, Bamboo Pith & Chicken Soup. With all that premium ingredients, the soup is naturally thickened and it was smooth and sweet in every sip.

Mains include Tea-smoked Duck, Braised Sea Bass with Roasted Pork Belly & Mushrooms and Stir-fried Scallops with Dried Oyster & Asparagus.

And then, we have the Lobster Fried Rice with Pork Liver & Preserved Sausage. As if it does not sound interesting enough, the real surprise comes when you take your first mouthful of rice. The brilliant chef added rice krispies for a textural crunch!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The dessert is a beautiful Dual Cream of Sweet Potato Served with Golden Pineapple Bag. The cream is similar to our usual almond cream (but better), with bits of sweet potato in between bites. And the pineapple bag is just so befitting of Chinese New Year; it is every bit tasty as it is auspicious. Your mum will be pleased.

AUSPICIOUS HARVEST MENU

Moving on to the big menu if you have a bigger dining group, we are looking at the Fortune Feast I at S$688++ per table (for 5) and S$1,288++ per table (for 10). Ready for what’s in?

It starts off with Mitzo’s signature Pearls of Prosperity Kanpachi Kingfish Yu Sheng. This is not your regular yu sheng; it is an elevated version with luxurious kingfish (chewy clear flesh) and the addition of lychee pearls that burst with sweetness.

This menu comes with the same Fish Maw Soup that we loved, and the much awaited pen cai. Luxuriate in the Superior Fortune Pot that is made up of abalone, dried scallop, flower mushroom, deep-fried fish maw, sea cucumber, roast duck, dried oyster, “hua diao” prawn, cabbage, white radish, lotus root, roasted pork belly and fa cai. That was a mouthful, but in other words, LOTS OF SUPERIOR INGREDIENTS.

Fortune Feast I also comes with a steamed live Soon Hock and Steamed Rice with Chinese Sausage, and the Dual Cream of Sweet Potato.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Another variation is Fortune Feast II (S$788++ for table of 5 and S$1,388++ for table of 10), which has the same yu sheng, soup and pen cai, as well as the Lobster Fried Rice that we really enjoyed. The desserts are the Dual Cream of Sweet Potato, as well as a Homemade Koi Fish Nian Gao.

FORTUNE FEAST MENU

Looking for an even bigger menu for big families and/or corporate dinners? Mitzo has several menus that cater to a group of ten, and they are Auspicious Harvest I (S$1,388++ for table of 10), Auspicious Harvest II (S$1,588++ for table of 10), Fortune Feast I (S$1,288++ for table of 10), Fortune Feast II (S$1,388++ for table of 10) and Fortune Feast III (S$1,488++ for table of 10).

They are pretty similar, with just a few varying items. Key items to look out for include are Stir-Fried XO Lobster Claw Topped with Shrimps & Seasonal Vegetables (available in Auspicious Harvest I), and Truffle Noodles with Lobster Claw & Prawn (available in Auspicious Harvest I and Fortune Feast III).

All sets for table of ten include the Pearls of Prosperity Kanpachi Kingfish Yu Sheng, Fish Maw Soup with Pumpkin, Bamboo Pith & Chicken Soup, Superior Fortune Pot, Dual Cream of Sweet Potato Served with Golden Pineapple Bag and Homemade Koi Fish Nian Gao.

Mitzo is known for its impressive range of artisanal and bespoke cocktails and the Spring Blossom—a smoky & sweet mezcal cocktail—is the best pairing to go with the dishes from the Chinese New Year menu.

Mitzo’s Chinese New Year set menus are available from 14 Jan 2017 to 11 Feb 2017.

The annual celebration of Chinese New Year sees endless baked treats and other savoury delights being sold, served and consumed by Chinese communities in Singapore throughout the 15-day festive period.

Ever wondered why the exchange of Mandarin Oranges is so important, and why there would always be pineapple tarts in each home?

The repetition of Chinese New Year Goodies is no random occurrence, as each snack is essentially symbolic of a meaningful purpose. The next time someone in the family asks, “Why do we always have to eat xxx during Chinese New Year?”, you will find the answer(s) to him/her here in our beginner’s guide to the Auspicious Meaning Behind 8 Chinese New Year Goodies.

Read: Chinatown’s Chinese New Year Market 2016 – Here’s What To Expect.

#1 BAK KWA

Bak Kwa, for the uninitiated, is a barbecued pork jerky that is extremely popular amongst Chinese ethnic communities; especially so during Lunar New Year. The dialect name Bak Kwa when translated means dried meat. The barbecued pork jerky’s deep red colour is considered auspicious in Chinese tradition, symbolising good luck and believed to ward off negative energies.

#2 JIAO ZI DUMPLINGS

Back in the olden days, ancient Chinese civilians used an age-old currency called Yuan Bao that are inherently dumpling-shaped ingots in silver or gold. Today, the Jiao Zi Dumplings we eat bear an uncanny resemblance to Yuan Bao, hence symbolising wealth and profit. The tasty appetisers are also commonly eaten on birthdays and even during a casual meal.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#3 MANDARIN ORANGES

Mandarin Oranges are believed to bring prosperity thanks to its Cantonese pronunciation, which sounds similar to gold. It is part of Chinese New Year tradition to offer a pair of Mandarin Oranges to respected seniors and hosts during house visiting. Note that you can only give a pair, nothing more or less; two pairs is a ultimate taboo. This is because the total number of four sounds like the Chinese word for death.

#4 NIAN GAO CAKES

Nian Gao is a sticky rice cake and the direct translation of it literally means “year cake”. However, the word ‘gao’ also sounds like ‘high’ in Mandarin, hence the Chinese believes in eating these sweet steamed glutinous rice cake for it is symbolic of going to greater heights each year.

#5 PINEAPPLE TARTS

We seem to take the presence of Pineapple Tarts at every household during Chinese New Year for granted. But besides the obvious fact that it tastes heavenly, this buttery treat is well-loved for its Hokkien pronunciation “Ong Lai” – which actually means prosperity is arriving. Clearly, puns are the inspiration behind all these Chinese New Year goodies.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#6 POMELO FRUIT

The huge Asian citrus’ Cantonese name is similar to words related to prosperity and status, hence thought as a fruit that takes one on a prosperous journey. It is also symbolic of good health, fertility and family unity.

#7 TRAY OF TOGETHERNESS

A Tray Of Togetherness refers to the snack platter laid out at homes for visitors to munch on. It is usually a pentagon-shaped container with eight compartments – though many different forms are available too. The tray is filled with an assortment of sweets and savouries such as red melon seeds, bite-size candies or even preserved dry fruits.

Eight is believed to be an auspicious number among the Chinese and each snack symbolises a different meaning, i.e. red melon seeds represent happiness and longans are believed to bring one many sons.

#8 YU SHENG

Yu Sheng, otherwise known as Lo Hei, is an extremely popular Chinese New Year dish in Singapore. The raw fish salad is typically set up on a communal table and each ingredient constituting the yusheng is symbolic of their respective meaning(s). For example, the fish is seen as abundance aka wealth while shredded green radish represent eternal youth.

It is that time of the year again – Chinese New Year. The time of amazing food, quality time with family and overnight mahjong.

If you celebrate Chinese New Year in Singapore, you would know that house visiting is mostly a must, and you spend pretty much the whole day going from one house to another – to reconnect with relatives, have some food, and to collect or give out red packets.

With that, you will notice that everywhere you go, there are certain types of people and they are generally the same at every house. Here are 10 Types of People at A Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner.

#1 THE ‘HANGRY’ RELATIVE

If you do not already know what this popular term means, it is the fusion of two words ‘hungry’ and ‘angry’. There is definitely someone who will whine about why the food is not ready yet, or why there is not enough food. If you can relate to this, you are probably this person. Else, just go find this person some food!

#2 THE AUNT WHO HAS ‘NO FILTER’

You know it, we know it; well, she might not know it. But she is the (annoying) one who will constantly ask inappropriate questions about why your boyfriend is not at the gathering (even though you two recently broke up), why are you not married yet, or why you chose to take a gap year from University. Unfortunately, there is no way of avoiding her; she will find you and interrogation starts!

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
// ]]>

#3 THE AUNT WHO TALKS TOO MUCH

“My son is top in his class!” “Did you see this new designer handbag I got?” “Your food is a little salty, maybe you could…” Yup, she does not stop talking and yapping away and all you can do is sit politely and listen because she thinks her advice is golden.

#4 THE AWKWARD & QUIET COUSIN

There is always one person at every social situation who excludes himself or herself. They might just prefer to be alone, or are simply feeling too awkward to interact. Nevertheless, try walking up to them to strike a conversation!

#5 THE NOISY KIDS

Running around, throwing things, screaming – kids can be a handful, especially when the parents don’t even care. Then again, it is Chinese New Year and we will embrace the spirit of love and harmony.

#6 THE ONE WHO HATES CHINESE NEW YEAR

The downer. This person is basically the one who ruins everybody’s mood. He or she would be complaining about the festive songs, shows and decor, and they just basically look so bored and discontent with the gathering altogether.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#7 THE ONE WHO IS SLEEPY AND BORED

You can spot this person yawning while resting his or her head on the couch. This person does not necessarily hate Chinese New Year, they might just find family gatherings a little too much, especially when they have #2 or #3 around.

#8 THE ONE WHO LOVES CHINESE NEW YEAR

This person will be dressed head to toe like a red packet. He or she will jiving along to Chinese New Year music and most likely be the life of the party. Sounds like fun, but can be a pain if he/she is overly obsessed.

#9 THE RELATIVE WHO FORGETS YOUR NAME

The reason is simple – you see this person only once a year, and they will never remember your name. You just have to tell him/her whose kid you are, and they would go, “Ohhhhhhh!”

#10 THE SLEEPY UNCLE

There will always be an uncle of ours who would be dozing off on the couch, or just snoring away in the bedroom because, well, he is always sleepy.

Chinese New Year in Singapore is an annual affair like no other. Every year, we are treated to stunning light displays, and Chinatown truly lights up beautifully for the lunar festival. We can’t deny that we grew up looking forward to the different decorations and lights every year.

Besides going from house to house to call on our relatives and friends, there is actually so much you can do before or after the actual day, as the Lunar New Year spans across a total of 15 days.

Chinese New Year is no doubt one of the most hectic months of the year, especially if you are the appointed one to take charge of all the preparations. The lunar festivity is meant for fun and lots of time with the family, so would it not be nice to lessen any burden you have with some tips and hacks?

When it comes to prepping the menu, there is so much you can do to make your lives easier. And we can assure you that with these steps, you will have a mistake-proof Chinese New Year; food hacks really save our lives.

Here are some Chinese New Year 2016 Food Hacks You Need To Know Now.

#1 AVOID CHINATOWN FOR FOOD SHOPPING

If you cannot stand crowds, that is.

Chinatown during the Chinese New Year period might be fun and bustling, and discounts might be splendid. But crowds can be such a turn-off; we say go to a neighbourhood bazaar (there are tons every year and everywhere) instead to grab your decor and snacks and whatnot, instead of elbowing your way through and being elbowed at Chinatown.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#2 BUY GROCERIES ONLINE TO AVOID CROWDS

With platforms such as Redmart, you can even do some last minute shopping online and have it delivered right to your doorstep.

That is one big step already checked off your list. Speaking about convenience and laziness!

#3 RESTAURANT FOOD DELIVERY

If you are lazy to cook at home, why not get food delivery for your Chinese New Year dinner? And no, we are not talking about the ubiquitous pizza and fast food delivery.

Deliveroo has completely reinvented the idea by offering food delivery from top restaurants and cafes – all at a flat rate of S$3 per delivery. Readers of ladyironchef can use the promo code “LICROO” to get S$20 off your first order on Deliveroo.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#4 DIY VARIOUS SNACKS

If you are a fan of adding personal touches to the food you serve, try making your own simple and quick snacks for sharing. Recipes are aplenty online and are easy to find.

Want to showcase more creativity? Make use of CNY-related goodies and jazz them up. Pineapple tarts smoothie and bak kwa (BBQ-ed pork jerky) sandwich, anyone?

For the former, simply dunk a few pieces of pineapple tarts into the blender, add some milk or water, and have them blended into a drink. Sounds farfetched but you will be delightfully surprised by the taste.

The latter is our favourite thing to do. We would sit bak kwa slices atop our favourite breads (focaccia works well!), then sprinkle cheddar, and pop them in the microwave. Cheesy steak sandwiches reinvented and made better with bak kwa!

#5 FUN & CONVENIENT COMMUNAL HOT POT

Instead of thinking of a million recipes to make a buffet or dinner spread, why not do a hotpot instead? This is your ticket to a fool-proof meal plan!

After all, Chinese New Year is all about bringing families together for a reunion, and enjoying time together. Hotpot is the best way to interact, and communal dining is such a quintessential Chinese thing to do! Just remember to refer to point #2 when you do your grocery shopping.

#6 KNOW THE “LUCKY FOODS” BEFORE PREPARATION

This lunar festival is largely about prosperity and anything lucky. From decors to colours, foods to words, anything symbollic and auspicious will be very warmly welcomed.

Do your research well and proper, list down all the possible “lucky foods” you can include in your menu planning, and have this list with you when you do your grocery shopping.

This sounds so minute, but take it from us that your folks will be pleased by your effort.

#7 MAKE PRETTY & EASY SOFT DRINK POPSICLES

Instead of serving soft drinks in cans (which is just plain boring and we are all sick of such convenience by now), offer your guests soft drink popsicles instead!

They don’t take much effort – just overnight freezing – and they are so pretty. We are pretty sure the kids in your family will be so happy too.

Pimp your popsicles up and give it a lunar touch. Throw in pineapple chunks and mandarin slices. You can even use rose syrup for red-coloured popsicles; the redder the better for CNY!

When in doubt, refer to point #5.

This year’s Chinese New Year Market is just like any other – full of yummy festive treats to bag home, and many other Chinese New Year-related decor and products. But we are seeing a lot more unique snacks and flavours this year that we have never encountered before.

As Singapore progresses along with food trends and the digital age, one-of-a-kind snacks and ideas are introduced to the annual market so as to constantly impress and excite.

We took a stroll down the different lanes and found some really interesting gems that are worth making a trip down for. If you are new to Singapore, you should also soak up the festive mood and experience the bustling annual market that Singaporeans love! Here is What To Expect At Chinatown’s Chinese New Year Market 2016.

The full market will start at the end of January, where the market will operate in its full glory and all stalls will run in full force. However, if you head down now, most stalls are already open and in business – great for early shopping and getting everything done on time, minus the crowd!

Besides the plethora of snacks, you can do your Chinese New Year decor shopping here. Look at these whopping low prices of S$1 and three for S$10.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

This is something that our moms always go to Chinatown for. We used to diss it, but as we grow older, we become more sentimental about many things and these red whatnots actually get to us. Let’s hope that this lunar spirit never die, and no matter how modernisation takes place, Chinese New Year will always look like how they traditionally look.

The same festive feel and spirit can be felt all through the market, and the market will liven up a lot more once the actual Chinese New Year day draws closer.

These fruit jellies are commonly seen every year, but we saw some pretty unique flavours besides the regular plum ones this year.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We have matcha, chocolates and coffee flavoured ones that originate from Taiwan, and because these fruit jellies are ever popular snacks among guests, we are gonna stock up on them in the new flavours.

Thinking of shopping for your regular Chinese New Year snacks? We suggest coming right to this store here (you will not be able to miss it, it takes up a very large area) where they sell snacks packaged in different sizes.

But of course, based on our observation, these become way cheaper on Chinese New Year Eve. They will slash the prices like crazy just to clear their stocks!

Stalls that sell seeds and munchies are aplenty, and prices are pretty much controlled and standardised, so you really can pick these up conveniently anywhere at almost the same prices.

This is probably the most unique stall at this year’s market.

We stopped in our tracks when we read ‘Sour Cream Cashew Nuts’. Being avid fans of buttery cashew nuts, these were the answer to our prayers. Such a pleasant surprise this was, and it is probably going to be our favourite snack this Chinese New Year!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

It is best to start walking from Pagoda Street where the market starts from. Pretty easy to spot if you are taking the train and exiting from Chinatown MRT Station.

The market extends all the way to Smith Street, Sago Street, Temple Street and Trengganu Street, as well as the neighbouring lanes on either sides of Pagoda Street. However, the main market – where majority of the stalls are- is located at Pagoda Street and Temple Street.
