Consecutively awarded the ‘World’s Best Airport’ for its sixth year in 2018—the first time in the history of the awards—, Changi Airport dubs itself as ‘an airport worthy of being a destination in itself’ for good reason. 

Jewel Changi Airport will be Singapore Changi Airport’s newest addition and unmistakably one of the most highly-anticipated openings in our city. Opening on 17 April 2019, this complex will house some of the world’s biggest f&b brands such as popular American burger franchise Shake Shack, A&W and London’s famous Burger & Lobster.

Before the official opening, a public preview will be held from 11 to 16 April 2019 for everyone to have a sneak peek. A total of about 500,000 free tickets will be available and it will run in four three-hour time blocks from 10am to 10pm daily.

The 14,000 sq m Canopy Park—located on the top floor of Jewel Changi Airport—is not available and it will be open to the public only in the middle of the year.

Here’s what you can expect to find in Jewel Changi Airport!

The 10-storey complex will cover a gross floor area of 134,000 meters square and will comprise a whole range of play attractions for both kids and adults alike, a variety of popular restaurants and retail brands.

To date, more than 90% of their retail space has already been occupied by big brands, including NYC’s famous Shake Shack and sportswear giant Nike. Whether you’re looking for international cuisines or local fare or even a place to sit down and sip on a pint of beer, this new mall has covered it all.

A&W

After having left our sunny shores 10 years ago, we thought that the popular American fast food chain A&W will be gone for good. Good news to fans of their famous root beer float, waffles and curly fries—A&W will be re-opening in Singapore as one of the tenants in Jewel Changi Airport!

BURGER & LOBSTER

Those who have travelled to London should be familiar with Burger & Lobster, London’s famous lobster roll restaurant. Known for its rustic yet luxurious concept, the brand’s Singapore outpost will include new dishes that are inspired by local flavours, alongside their signature lobster rolls and burgers.

EL FUEGO BY COLLIN’S®

Good news to our Muslim friends—well-known Western chain, COLLIN’S, will be opening a branch that specialises in halal European cuisine at Jewel Changi Airport. Branded as El Fuego, diners can tuck into the edible likes of steak, oysters, seafood and more here!

Consistently ranked among the top chocolate brands in Switzerland, Läderach has been around since 1962 and now has 65 outlets across Switzerland, Germany, the Middle East and Asia. Promising the use of top-quality cocoa beans, their handmade chocolates will be air-flown and sold in their new outlet in Jewel Changi Airport come end-March.

PINK FISH

A Norwegian brand, Pink Fish is a salmon-centric restaurant that focuses heavily on sustainability. Using solely fresh Norwegian salmon, the restaurant aims to serve as a wholesome, healthy alternative to fast-food restaurants and their outlet at Jewel Changi Airport will its first ever outlet outside of Norway. Here you can expect a variety of salmon dishes in the form of burgers, wraps, hot pots and salads!

POKEMON CENTRE

The world’s only Pokémon Centre outside of Japan is set to open in Singapore at Jewel Changi Airport next year. As with every Pokémon Centre, you can expect to find seasonal and regional exclusive toys, stationery, trading cards, jewellery and even chopsticks! In addition, this outlet will be selling Pikachu plushies in pilot and cabin crew uniform, which are only available exclusively in Singapore!

SHAKE SHACK

Since its humble beginnings as a hot dog stand in Madison Square Park, Shake Shack is currently one of the most well-known fast food chains in the world, operating 136 locations internationally. The fast-food brand will be making its debut in Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport and will be having the same menu as Shake Shack in the US and South Korea.

TIGER STREET LAB

Sip on some local beer whilst touring the new mall with homegrown beer brand, Tiger Beer. The local brand will be unveiling a first-in-the-world concept in Jewel, Tiger Street Lab which will feature both F&B and retail elements. Look forward to Tiger’s usual range of beers as well as exclusive-to-Jewel seasonal brews and pair them with some of Singapore’s street food which will also be available on Tiger Street Lab’s menu.

RETAIL STORES

Besides the myriad of dining destinations, Jewel Changi Airport will also host numerous retail brands where you can shop till you drop and get some retail therapy.

Of which, sportswear giant Nike will be opening a 1000 square meter store, its largest outlet in Southeast Asia. Local, homegrown brands such as Naiise and Supermama will also be introducing first-of-its-kind concepts for their stores in Jewel as part of Changi Airport’s efforts to introduce Singaporean brands to the rest of the world.

All hail the cat without mouth; Hello Kitty Orchid Garden, Singapore’s first Hello Kitty Cafe is opening at Changi Airport Terminal 3 in May 2016!

For so long now, we have been pinning for a Hello Kitty cafe in Singapore, and though some may argue that it is but a gimmick, many of us are suckers for thematic cafes like that. Just take a look at the various Hello Kitty cafes in Asia, and how “atmospheric” in their own ways they are. Surely this is something for fans to be excited about?

What makes it even better is that the café will be open for 24 hours daily. Hello Kitty cakes for supper, anyone?

Inspired by Singapore’s ‘Garden City’ vibes, the Hello Kitty themed cafe will feature lush greenery and opulent blooms. A definitive but lovely touch to the Singapore outlet, Hello Kitty Orchid Garden is going to be nothing short of photogenic.

Hello Kitty Orchid Garden’s menu comprises all-day breakfast fare and desserts such as gelato sundaes, waffles, pastries and tea cakes. While the exact menu has not been finalised, the dishes are said to carry local influences to reflect our cultures and taste buds.

There will also be a retail section selling Singapore-exclusive merchandise including a range of custom Hello Kitty-inspired tea blends, plush toys, grow-it-yourself plant kits, postcards and tea cups. Oh yes, we are so going broke.

Our picks have got to be the wagyu nigiri – quality beef that is so rich in flavour and well-marbled, the salmon aburi that is torched to perfection, and sweet makis with creamy avocado and soft-shelled crab. Itacho Sushi always satisfies.

Gurney Drive presents the best of Penang hawker food like Penang laksa, prawn noodles, and char koay teow – which was, in particular, quite a plate of heaven with a generous serving of juicy prawns and sausages atop rice noodles. The food is pretty authentic and pleasantly affordable.

The red topping deserves a special mention for its sizzling spiciness atop rich pork broth.

Saboten (T1 Public Area)

Tonkatsu is ever popular, and Saboten does theirs well. Which explains why they are always packed, but we really would not mind the wait just to have a serving of the gorgeously-fried hire Katsu (pork tenderloin cutlet); we never leave Saobten without a serving of that. And the cheese katsu is a fabulous alternative that we always add-on, too! The various sets is another reason why Saboten is an ideal option for families.

Seafood Paradise (T2 Public Area)

If you need your crab fix before your holiday, or if you are returning from a holiday with a major craving for our local crabs, head to Seafood Paradise and indulge in a luxurious seafood spread. Crabs aside, we really love their cheese lobsters – fresh, chunky crustaceans lavishly soaked in a bed of cheese. Eat it with deep-fried mantou! Also, the cuttlefish with kangkong is a favourite among locals, too!

There are also educational corners and individual enclosures which will give you more insights into the life cycle of a butterfly. And if you are lucky, you will be able to catch the birth of a butterfly as it emerges from the pupa.

#2 Take a stroll at the Sunflower Garden

A Sunflower Garden in the airport? This is surely one thing in Changi Airport that most people never knew about. No flower quite like the sunflower to brightens up our days. The next time you are in Changi Airport, remember to drop by the rooftop sunflower garden at level three of departure transit lounge at Terminal 2.

#3 Catch a free movie at the theatre

If you have some time to spare before your flight, why not catch a show at the movie theatre? Movie buffs will be delighted to know that the movie theatres are open 24 hours daily, and the screenings are free!

The movie theatres can be found at Terminal 2′s departure transit lounge south on level three, and at Terminal 3′s department transit lounge north on level three. The films are all up to date and we swear by the comfort level of the seats, too! The movies at terminal 2′s theatre are from FOX movies, while the ones from Terminal 3′s theatre are recently released movies specially curated by the team at Changi Airport.

#4 Play games at the Entertainment Deck

The Entertainment Deck at the departure transit lounge at level 3 of Terminal 2 has an array of entertainment facilities such as Xbox Kinect Room, MTV booth, XBOX360 and Playstation 3 consoles, music area and the aforementioned movie theatre.

#5 Watch the latest sports events at the Xperience Zone

Sports lovers can head to the Xperience Zone to watch the latest sports events on large screen in the comfort of plush, cushioned seats which come with its own set of speakers for a surround sound experience.

#6 Kids’ Friendly Playgrounds

For families with kids in tow, Changi Airport has several children’s playgrounds at the three terminals. Your kids can not only make new friends with the other kiddos, but also run around in comfort – a great way for them to work off their excess energy so that you can enjoy a peaceful flight later.

#7 Go for a slide

Singapore’s tallest slide, The Slide @ T3 is a four-storey tall slide, and is every kid’s favourite playground. Swensen’s and O’Coffee Club at Changi Airport open for 24 hours daily, making them the ideal spots to grab a bite when we touch down in Singapore late at night. Both of us are big fan of Japanese food, so it is no surprise that Itacho Sushi is our favourite haunt as it serves good quality sushi at reasonable prices.

Another Japanese diner that we really like is Saboten, which has consistently good tonkatsu and is great for a quick meal before boarding the plane. For ramen lovers, a stop to Ramen Champion will have you spoilt with different renditions from 4 carefully selected chefs from Japan, who each dishes up their specialties in the individual booths.

The transit area has even more options. Peach Garden Noodle House, Cedele, Bakerzin, Killiney Kopitiam, Tai Hing Roast Restaurant, The Green Market, just to name a few.

My quest to find the best tonkatsu brought me to Saboten at Changi Airport Terminal 1.

I’ve always wanted to try Saboten after hearing so much about it. Many people have been telling me that it is their favourite tonkatsu restaurant in Singapore. I am embarrassed that it took me so long to go there, but I am happy to say that I finally had the chance to drop by to sample some of the signature items on the menu.

The question now is, does Saboten have the best tonkatsu in Singapore?

From pork loin, to shrimp, to salmon, and Japanese curry, Saboten has many things to offer. I was tempted by everything on the menu, so we ordered quite a few dishes. The food came after a while, and it was quite a magnificent sight as they filled up the entire table. We had Loin Katsu ($23), Loin Katsu Curry ($19.5), Tonkatsu Asparagus Cheese Roll, Loin Katsudon ($20), Salmon Katsu ($20), and Oyster Katsu.

I was very excited to see the Loin Katsu ($23). I quickly picked up a piece of the gorgeous pork loin with my chopsticks, and took a bite.

It was good. But not out-of-this-world good. I was slightly disappointed. Maybe I was expecting too much, but it did not blow me away.

Then, we had a Katsu with Asparagus Cheese Roll. It was essentially asparagus and melted cheese stuffed within crispy katsu. This was followed by the Deep-Fried Oyster Katsu, and Salmon Katsu.

The oysters were not too bad; it didn’t have any fishy taste. The Salmon Katsu ($20), on the other hand, was surprisingly good. I was quite skeptical initially as I thought that it would be too dry.

I was wrong, of course. Saboten’s Salmon Katsu managed to retain the moistness of the fish, and it wasn’t dry at all. That being said, I probably wouldn’t order this on my own because a) I don’t really fancy deep-fried salmon, and b) I need to save room for the pork loin.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Loin Katsudon ($20). Huge chunks of meat buried under the thick and fluffy eggs. There’s only one word to describe this: YUM.

Another of my favourite dish is the Loin Katsu Curry ($19.5). It combined the sweet Japanese curry with breaded pork loin. I could eat this for lunch everyday.

Saboten is definitely one of the better tonkatsu restaurants in Singapore, but it is not my favourite. I still prefer other places like Tampopo, Tonkichi, and Tonkatsu by Ma Maison.

Having said that, I can see myself coming back as the food is generally good, and reasonably-priced. I am kind of glad that I am not staying in the East, otherwise I would probably be eating tonkatsu very often.
