The sister cafe of Lunar Coffee Brewers, Atlas Coffeehouse is located just a few minutes walk away from Botanic Gardens MRT Station. The first thing you will notice as you walk up to the front door is the floor to ceiling glass windows where visitors can sit by and people watch.

Fynn’s Café—conveniently located right outside Esplanade MRT Station Exit CC3—is a gorgeous new addition to South Beach Avenue. The beautiful modern all-day dining café reminded us of our good old days in Melbourne. It is worth mentioning staff members are attentive and friendly – a trait that Singapore’s hospitality industry greatly lacks.

We dropped by on a weekday afternoon and Fynn’s Café was packed with customers; expatriates and office dwellers make up the bulk of the crowd. No surprise there, since it is located just a stone’s throw away from the office building and JW Marriott Hotel.

One-week-old Fynn’s Café is seriously a paradise for all avid Instagrammers. Think marbled tables, rattan chairs, white cushions, stylish lamps and potted plants at every corner.

Coffee prices range from S$4+ for an Espresso, S$5.50+ for a Flat White to S$7+ for an Iced Mocha. Fynn’s Cafe uses roasted blends from Common Man Coffee Roasters.

The All-beef Burger (S$22+) is served with crisp seasoned shoestring fries. The burger comprises two fluffy sesame buttered buns, a juicy ground beef patty, pickled cucumber, onion rings, fresh tomatoes, romaine lettuce and melted gruyère cheese. A house made mildly spiced sauce is smeared over the beef.

Grain bowls are all the rage now and Fynn’s Café has a wholesome rendition on its weekday lunch menu. Try their Grilled Chicken Fried Wild Rice (S$19.50+)—fried rice is topped with generous portions of succulent grilled chicken, snow peas, edamame, pickled vegetables and egg.

The freshly baked cakes at Fynn’s Café are on a rotational basis and we had a Carrot Cake (S$11+). The palm-size circular carrot cake was covered in desiccated coconut and cream cheese frosting. Traces of real carrot are present throughout.

Envy Coffee is a 5-minute walk away from One-North MRT station, nestled in the office district of Fusionopolis. Because of its convenient location, it can get rather busy during lunch hour but guess what? You can make reservations prior to your visit. Otherwise, you can simply order your beverage for takeaway.

Walk into Envy Coffee and you will notice the vibrant colours used on the walls and furniture. Nothing is colour coded and the chairs are placed in random in a multitude of colours. The bright colours will perk your day up, even if you are having Monday blues. Check out the quote on the wall too; the cafe has got all the hipster vibes right.

Visitors also get access to free wifi (the password is on the receipt) and power points; don’t you just love cafes that provide wifi? We sure do!

Envy Coffee is known for handcrafted coffee and we knew we had to try their Cappuccino (S$5). The aromatic smell of the Cappuccino had us all excited, and it sure was a good blend of espresso and hot steamed milk. The froth was just the right amount too; nothing too thick that you have to scoop it out.

The Cafe Latte (S$5) has a milder espresso taste as compared to the Cappuccino. Those who prefer a creamier coffee drink will enjoy this.

Envy Coffee also offers mains and desserts on their menu but we would say skip those and go for the coffee instead because they are not worth the time and calories at all.

For NUS students who are looking for a change of environment to study at, Envy Coffee is one you can consider as it is located near to your campus. Just be sure to avoid the lunch crowd or you will it hard to get a table.

Heading up to level 2 of 73 Amoy Street to Dapper Coffee was a tiny setback, especially after trudging through Singapore’s humid weather. But the cosy space made up for the “hike”, and we spent an idyllic afternoon at the cafe over great coffee.

The swanky interior resembles a cool British pub. The coffee aroma that filled the air was alluring and we were thankful for the good range of different coffee to choose from.

Let’s see what the hype about Dapper Coffee is all about.

We ordered a cold brew coffee – perfect option for a crazily humid afternoon. Their cold brew coffee was listed as S$7. But upon taking a seat, the barista came up to us and told us that they only had a drink called Gold Cold Brew (S$10) available.

Skepticism levels were higher than ever. We agreed to it and before we could enquire more, he sprinted off to grab our drink. When we saw that the drink came in a tiny minuscule bottle, it really didn’t look like much. He swished and swirled the little glass jar and then the magic happened.

We were told that this drink has something called ‘unicorn tears’; of course, he declined to unveil the “secret ingredients”. What we saw were tiny gold particles, much smaller than gold flakes, inside of the glass. However pretty it was, it was still a tiny bit gimmicky.

We poured it out to have a taste and we had our answer – it was an exceptional cold brew. But we are sure about one thing – the ‘unicorn tears’ did nothing for us, except a little visual appeal. The coffee was strong and intense, basically more of a cold brew espresso instead.

Dapper Coffee also offers a range of cakes that includes Salted Egg Yolk Sesame Cake and Mango Avocado Cake for you to pair your coffee with.

Will we return here? Very likely, but we will probably stick to our usual latte. The extra S$3 was not worth it.

Truth be told, we were really upset when November 8 at Upper Thomson shut its doors a few months ago. Thankfully, the same people behind November 8 has opened a brand new cafe & bar concept in the same Thomson V One Building and it is called Five by Five (5 x 5).

The 2-week old casual establishment is decked in an all-white interior with minimalistic wooden furnishings. Five by Five is one of the rare few cafes in Singapore that opens till midnight daily (except for Tuesdays).

Tucked away from the main roads of Upper Thomson, Five by Five is a cozy space that serves espresso beverages up to Melburnian standards. Coffees (from S$3) are made from Common Man Coffee Roasters’ 22 Martin Blend and one can expect an aromatic heavy bodied cuppa with a dark chocolate lingering aftertaste.

The homestyle main courses offered at Five by Five are delicious and unpretentious. If you are sick of the ubiquitous Eggs Benedict, try their Japanese Beef Stew (S$18.50) and Chicken Bleu (S$15.50).

The former is a wholesome Japanese curry-based casserole of braised beef chunks served with toasts on the side, while the latter is a deboned succulent chicken thigh stuffed with bacon and cheese complemented with chewy orzo rice pasta and a leafy green salad.

Five by Five’s classic waffle (S$6) is a must-order; crisp on the outside and impossibly fluffy inside, we loved how consistent the texture is. You can choose to top up the tasty savoury delight with exotic ice-cream flavours (S$4.20 per deluxe scoop / S$4.80 per premium scoop) such as Coconut Taro, Thai Milk Tea, D24 Durian and whatnot.

When night approaches, Five by Five transforms into a laid back bar where you can unwind over draft beers and bottled beers. Enjoy their daily Happy Hour promotion from 5 – 9pm at just S$5 for half a pint of Kronenbourg Blanc or Kronenburg Lager. The bar-cum-cafe opens till midnight daily and Upper Thomson dwellers no longer have to head down to the awfully congested CBD for a drinking session.

Last but not least, you would be pleased to hear that Five by Five offers complimentary Wi-Fi to all dine-in customers.

#2 DUTCH COLONY COFFEE

A coffee shop that started with a humble beginning at PasarBella, Dutch Colony Coffee Co. now has its own coffee roastery and academy at Defu Lane, as well as its new full-fledge cafe at Frankel Avenue.

We love the vibe of the new outlet in the Siglap neighbourhood. Other than coffee, Dutch Colony Cafe also serves a small selection of breakfast (S$5.50 – S$10), sandwiches (S$8 – S$14) and cakes on its menu.

#3 FIVE & DIME

When our thought crosses Five & Dime, we would slowly be transported to the days when we savoured their Mentaiko Pasta (S$18), tossed in mentaiko sauce and topped with cod fish roe which was pure heaven. Tucked along River Valley Road, be charmed by its extensive menu selection that are available for both lunch and dinner. If you prefer just a small dessert, you can opt for their Salted Egg Lava Cake (S$12) too.

#5 FLAVOURS FLING

Hougang has never been known to have a bustling cafe area, but Flavour Flings – located in the heartland neighbourhood of Hougang Avenue 1 – brings an interesting fresh face in to the neighbourhood. #6 DRURY LANE CAFE

Drury Lane Cafe revamped their menu recently, but popular classic dishes such as baked eggs and muffins are here to stay. Drury Lane Café’s muffins have captured the attention of many for its tastiness and unique payment concept – you get to pay whatever amount you deem fit and we hope everyone takes this opportunity to be generous and to appreciate the bakers, instead of stingy. Miss Molly’s menu may be a tough nut to crack but its fusion dishes such as Laksa Pasta with Prawns (S$13.80) and Har Jiong Kai Sandwich (S$8.80) have resonated well with the younger generation who are excited to try Miss Molly’s exotic offerings. For people who work in the Buona Vista area, Revolution Coffee at Portsdown Road is worth checking out for lunch. #18 THE DAILY ROUNDUP

The Daily Roundup at The Working Capitol – one of the hottest co-working spaces in Singapore – serves a simple purpose of offering fresh food and coffee. Opened by the folks behind Department of Caffeine and Two Degrees North Coffee Co., The Populus Coffee & Food Co. opened its doors to public late last year, and it has been our favourite cafe in Singapore since.
