ALICE BOULANGERIE

Alice Boulangerie is one cafe-cum-bakery that really left a deep impression on us. In recent times when everyone is trying to outdo one another with trends and patterns, Alice Boulangerie chose to stay classy with honest bakes – ironically, this is what we are lacking in the current climate when everyone is so caught up with fanciful and Instagrammable-everything.

Remember to save some room for desserts and pastries, because everything that comes out from Alice’s pastry team is AMAZING! You will probably need to visit Alice Boulangerie several times to try everything on the menu, but we are telling you it is very well worth the trips.

AWFULLY CHOCOLATE

The word ‘chocolate’ has almost become synonymous with our home-grown brand – Awfully Chocolate. At least, it is so for Singaporeans. In the past few years, the brand has grown significantly with many outlets islandwide now, but one thing remains – the awesomeness of their chocolate cakes. That, we will always swear by.

BRUNETTI

Brunetti, a famous Italian Pasticceria from Australia, serves up some decadent sweet treats. They also offer options for breakfast!

The Pear and Cheese Crumble is one of our favourites – a cheesecake with poached pears, blackberry jam and a chocolate chip biscuit base. For chocolate-lovers, give their Flourless Chocolate Souffle a go. It’s a wonderful blend of dark chocolate and hazelnut bavaroise cream – super rich and delicious.

CHEF YAMASHITA

Helmed and named after the man himself, Chef Yamashita Masataka is a master in creating the most beautiful handcrafted desserts. This is one Japanese patisserie where you can indulge in cakes that will not only feed your belly but your eyes as well.

If you like a fluffier, light and airy cake, their Ichigo (meaning Strawberry in Japanese), will be right up your alley. Despite being a simple strawberry shortcake, it is one of their most popular cakes. For a more indulgent treat, try their sliced matcha roll cake. The matcha flavour is strong even with the cake and cream being so light. It’s even topped with a small ball of mochi!

CIEL PATISSERIE

Ciel Patisserie brings classic French pastry to the table but also takes inspiration from popular local flavours. With a vast array of cakes and pastry, including a gluten-free option, you will never be bored with their sweet selections.

Try their Ondeh Ondeh sliced cake – each bite is filled with the aroma of pandan and the sweet, caramelized flavour of gula Melaka. Another classic would be their Strawberry Shortcake. It is one of the best strawberry shortcakes that we’ve had in Singapore.

CREAM & CUSTARD

Cream & Custard was the patisserie that went viral on Instagram a few years back for their Watermelon Strawberry Cake and other madly instagrammable confections like their Unicorn Poop and Galaxy mirror glaze cakes.

If you haven’t tried their pretty pastries yet, we’ll definitely recommend the cake that started their hype – The Watermelon Strawberry Cake. A whole slice of fresh watermelon is sandwiched between rose-scented cream and layers of chewy almond dacquoise. It’s topped with even more fresh fruits such as strawberries, blueberries and grapes.

DULCET & STUDIO

This Japanese patisserie offers great cakes and pastries. It’s the perfect place to tuck into a sweet midday slice of chiffon (or two). We especially love their Double Cheese Chiffon Cheesecake and their Choux Puffs!

Dulcet & Studio’s cheesecake was super creamy with a slight tang, which toned down the sweetness of the cake. Their choux puffs were also chocked full of milky cream filling. They introduce new flavours of choux puffs from time to time, so expect some surprises when you visit!

FLOR PATISSERIE

You absolutely have to try Flor Patisserie’s Strawberry Souffle. Ultra light vanilla sponge is paired with airy cream filling and topped with fresh strawberries in a sweet glaze. It can be likened to eating a sweet cloud when taking a bite of this cake. One of our favourites, and it will be one of yours once you try it!

You have to try their Tiramisu and their Lemon Tart.
If you were to look up the best cafes in the Bugis area, you would have a pretty hefty list. It’s definitely a hot spot for new openings with the abundance of shophouses and lots for retail and F&B.

Located at Jalan Klapa, near the North Bridge area and a few streets down of the famed Haji Lane and Arab Street, is Double Up Coffee. It’s a minimalist’s dream with stone seats, wooden furnishings and an overall industrial theme.

First up, we definitely had to try their coffee. We ordered an Iced Latte, which they call an ‘Spro With Milk (S$5, S$1 for iced). We felt that their house blend of coffee was right up our alley – smooth, full-bodied and had a nice tinge of fruit lingering on our tastebuds as we sipped on the coffee.

To complement our early-morning cuppa, we chose to have a slice of their freshly-baked Blueberry Crust (S$5.50). It’s an interesting pastry that we’ve never really come across before (almost like a cross between a baked galette and a pie). The pastry comes sprinkled in lemon zest and a dusting of icing sugar.

The blueberry filling was what really blew us away. It wasn’t too sweet or too tangy – like a lot of pie fillings. It was balanced really well in between and had a great texture – not jammy and still having the mouthfeel of stewed blueberries. The flaky crust accompanied this filling harmoniously and we liked how it was accented by the brown sugar crystals that were probably pressed into the dough just before the egg wash-glazing and baking.

Double Up Coffee is quite a great place to sit and sip on a cuppa with a friend, passing the morning. The cafe is quiet and the staff are pretty cheery to boot, so it’s well worth a short hike from Bugis station. If you’re into granite walls, minimal settings and a good cup of joe, you’re definitely going to love this cafe.

Taking our coffee scene by storm is Alchemist, a specialty coffee joint famous for their grab-and-go cuppa. Coffee lovers will be familiar with their first two outlets at Hong Leong Building and International Plaza; they have just opened their flagship store this year at Khong Guan Building in Tai Seng!

Their latest establishment is a hidden gem, nestled in former Khong Guan Biscuit Factory. Decked in a minimalistic interior with marble furniture and blue countertops, they now house a roastery and dining area for you to chill with your cup of joe! You can snack on their baked goods too.

The Hot Chocolate (S$5) was smooth and velvety in texture, and we could taste the thick chocolate flavour. We thought it tasted like a brownie in drink form! The creaminess of the foam was also very comforting with a sweet aftertaste.

We also ordered a Flat White (S$5), which was served with beautiful swan latte art. The coffee was made from a house-blend Dark Matter, and it had a bold, nutty finish. It was also smooth and consistent with a mellow flavour profile.

Here at Alchemist, each cuppa is carefully and lovingly prepared. They are definitely one of the better coffee shops out there, with their cosy ambience being a plus point. If you are looking for a great pick-me-up, this is the place to visit!

If you’re in the mood for some freshly-baked buttery, crisp croissants and pastries, you’re in luck because we’ve found a bakery nestled in Joo Chiat that serves just that.

Established in August 2019, Petit Pain specialises in bread and pastries such as croissants, danishes and escargot rolls. Check out what we had from this cosy bakery and our thoughts on their bakes!

The humble bakery has a simple display counter with all their freshly-baked goods lined up neatly behind a glass case. Stepping into the space, the immediate smell of butter and bread tantalized our tastebuds, enticing us toward the golden-brown goodies.

If you’d like to have your pastries at the store, they do have a few tables and chairs to sit and relax while you munch!

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Even with the deceiving amount of sugar dusted on top, it wasn’t too sweet and in fact was one of the best renditions of the pastry we have ever tried. It is one of the most indulgent croissant hybrids.

Now, we’re sure you’ve seen these well-hyped babies all over social media. Bakery Brera’s creatively flavoured Cruffins have been making its round on Instagram. We tried their PB&J Cruffin and it certainly lived up to the hype.

The sugar-encrusted pastry was generously filled with creamy, savoury peanut butter and a sweet jam and they complemented the crispy pastry impeccably. It was definitely the highlight of our trip.

Other than what we mentioned, Bakery Brera also serves up other delicious variants of their signature cruffins – Nutty Salted Caramel, Lemon Curd and Kaya Coconut.

Bakery Brera is a true reminder of why we should continue supporting passion-filled local endeavours into Singapore’s diverse food landscape. Their indulgent handcrafted pastries should definitely be on your to-get list!

They will be opening up just a bakery here in Singapore for the time being.

When it comes to artisanal bread and pastries baked fresh, very few do it better than the good folks over at Enjoué Bakery. Specialising in a vast array of quality European-style artisanal bread, pastries and cakes, each and every one of this humble bakery’s authentic bakes come with sturdy crusts imbued with the natural flavours of fermentation and a robust mouthfeel that is quite unlike any other.

All their products are hand-made, freshly-baked daily and free from any preservatives and other unnatural ingredients. In essence, what you are likely to get is real-deal, healthy loaves that boast spectacular flavour profiles and textures—something you probably will not be able to find at commercial bread shops.

Artisanal bread is all-natural and do not come laden with preservative, additives and chemicals—not to mention they taste so much better. It may take a bit of getting used to, but the pros of switching over to artisanal bread truly outweigh the cons, and Enjoué Bakery is perhaps one of the few in sunny Singapore that guarantees superior quality, wholesome loaves that come with the promise of unbeatable flavour.

Enjoué Bakery is having a special promotion of S$1 butter croissant (limited to 3 pieces per customer, daily) from now until 8 August 2018.

THE ORIGINAL ENJOUÉ BAKERY

Mention the name Enjoué and you’d probably get eye rolls and cynical remarks. But here’s the thing—Enjoué Bakery is the original Enjoué, but in recent times, it has been misrepresented and more often than not misunderstood for being the infamous cakes and dessert table company.

That Enjoué is now operating and known as Euphorique Bakery, but there is still a confusion between the two. The distinguishment is simple: Enjoué Bakery is a properly registered company with a proper shopfront, and they specialise in quality European artisanal bakes; while Euphorique Bakery is… Euphorique Bakery.

The latter leaves much to be desired with their endless scandals and sagas. We’ll leave you to decide if Euphorique Bakery is worth the time, but for us, we’d very much prefer to stick to the original Enjoué Bakery who is, by no means, affiliated to Euphorique at all.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

Their croissants are made of a layered leavened dough they repeatedly layer with butter. The dough is then rolled, folded and rested several times until a multi-layered structure of dough and butter is formed—a tedious process nonetheless, but one that yields superb results.

Light, airy, flaky and buttery all at the same, there are only so many places we know of that execute the humble croissant just right.
