<p>Founded by Swiss chef Grégoire Michaud who was previously the Executive Pastry Chef at Four Seasons Hong Kong, Bakehouse is one of the most popular bakeries in Hong Kong and there’s always a long queue for their baked goods, especially their Egg Tarts which are made of a sourdough croissant crust.</p>

<p>Their famous egg tarts sell out very quickly but you can pay for them to place an order first and come back later at the assigned timing to collect them.</p>

<p>We reached the bakery at 10am and the first batch of egg tarts were already gone. We were told that the next batch of egg tarts would be available at 12.30pm. The good news is you can come back anytime (in our case, it was between 12.30pm to 9pm) to collect the egg tarts once you have placed an order.</p>

<p>Made of sourdough crust, the egg tarts come with silky egg filling and they remind us of Portuguese egg tarts. They are not too bad, but to be honest, we don’t get the hype over them.</p>

<p>Bakehouse has lots of beautiful pastries and baked goods which are equally good, but their egg tarts get the most attention on social media. We won’t mind eating it, but we won’t queue up again specially for them.</p>

<p>Unlike the original shop at Jalan Membina (opposite of Tiong Bahru Plaza) which is an old-school bakery, the flagship outlet at 247 Victoria Street has a modern decor which looks like a Hong Kong Cha Chaan Teng.</p>

<p>We first discovered <a href="https://www.ladyironchef.com/2016/03/leong-sang-hong-kong-pastries/" target="_blank">Leung Sang HK Pastries</a> years ago in 2007 when it was at its original location at Sago Street in Chinatown. We have been big fans of their Hong Kong-style egg tarts with amazingly buttery flaky pastry ever since.</p>
<p>The egg custard encased in the pastry is of a pastel yellow shade—not the typical rich hue you might see, but what do you know? It is so silky, creamy and sweet! This is hands down one of the <a title="best egg tarts in singapore" href="https://www.ladyironchef.com/2020/09/best-egg-tarts-singapore/" target="_blank">best egg tarts you can find in Singapore</a>.</p>
<p>They also have Western-style egg tarts which come in a different shell—the harder kind that tastes more subtle. While it uses the same egg custard filling, we prefer the Hong Kong-style egg tart’s flaky puff pastry.</p>

<p>They moved to Jalan Membina (opposite of Tiong Bahru Plaza) a few years ago and their egg tarts are still as good as before. This old-school looking confectionery may look next to nothing, but their egg tarts are to die for.</p>

<p>Leung Sang HK Pastries&#8217; flagship outlet at 247 Victoria Street has officially opened its door to the public on 24 July 2021.</p>
<p>Other than egg tarts, you can also get other Hong Kong-style pastries including Polo Buns, Lotus Paste w Salted Egg Puff, and Char Siew Sou.</p>
<p>The new location opposite Bugis Junction is definitely more accessible than the original outlet at Jalan Membina and we can definitely see ourselves heading there more often.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">His version of the iconic Siew Mai (pork dumplings) replaces minced pork with spicy mackerel otah paste and prawns. The Siew Mai is first steamed before being wok-fried. Laced with aromatic spices, this siew mai rendition promises a nice crunch and a mildly spicy kick.</p>

The short-crust pastry that encases it is just as important—if not, more. Here at Song Garden, the Mini Egg Tarts (S$4.20++ for 3 pieces) are far better than your traditional flaky egg tarts. Buttery, crumbly and filled with a luscious egg filling, this is undeniably one of the best renditions in Singapore.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">What we particularly loved about this was the fact that it was small enough to eat in one bite, which for one, does away with the nuisance of crumbs falling everywhere, and allows you to taste every single component at one go.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The initial bite excites with a pleasant crunch, followed by the sweet, savoury and spicy chilli crab filling that comes pouring out all over your tongue. The contrast between flavour and texture was struck beautifully and out of all the many chilli crab innovations we have tried over the years, we must say this is among our top few favourites.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Both chefs also impress with their Oven Baked Snow Skin Bun (S$5.40++ for 3 pieces). The savoury and slightly sweet char siew filling still had bits of fat intact which made it such a joy to eat, and we liked that the crust was crunchy without being overly greasy.</p>

This casual dining restaurant has extremely competitive prices—which means you can always pop by to satisfy your dim sum cravings even if you are on a budget!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">TungLok Teahouse at Square Two recently underwent a transformation: From a retro old-school Chinese Teahouse, to a place which revolutionizes the way dim sum is served. Hint: there is automation and interaction involved here.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">After all these years, it remains as one of our all-time favourite places for reliable dim sum.<span id="more-121494"></span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">At first look, the new TungLok Teahouse at Square 2 resembles a classic American Diner with its green and red booths. It is indeed refreshing for a dim sum restaurant.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The restaurant has implemented a new dining concept with its tray delivery system. Choose to sit where the action is at, the booths, which cater to group of four or six; or the round tables at the side of the restaurant which seat bigger groups.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">We felt like we were kids again, having so much fun exploring a new game that has just been launched. This new system also means that your waiting time is greatly reduced!</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Cartoon dim sum will always capture our hearts, which is what the Mini Piglet BBQ Buns (S$5.30++ &#8211; 3 pieces) at TungLok Teahouse did. On top of being adorable, we gave this dish additional points for its taste too.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">We tore apart the soft bun and were delighted to be greeted with a generous portion of barbequed pork and sweet sauce.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">We loved how we were surprised by the runny quail egg yolk when we bit into the pork and shrimp siew mai. And as if the sweetness from the egg wasn&#8217;t enough, black truffle is added for an overall elevation of the taste!</p>

People often talk about how change is the only constant in life, but we say the only constant at Leung Sang Hong Kong is the amazingly buttery flaky pastry that is so addictive with every bite.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The traditional ones are prepared with black tea and milk, and usually carries a hint of bitterness within it sweetness body. Hong Kong-style Milk Tea can be easily found in cha chaan teng, and are available in both hot and iced versions.</p>

Do not think of their macaronis as you would of a typical Italian pasta; the ones in Hong Kong are slimmer and has a smooth surface, quite often cooked to a softness that is almost melty to taste.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">There are many variations of wanton noodles in Asia, and while they are all arguably &#8216;the best&#8217; in their own rights, Hong Kong&#8217;s version deserves our love for it is ever comforting. The main ingredients are egg noodles that are cooked al dente and boast a springy texture, blanched Chinese vegetables (usually kai lan or cabbage) and dumplings (wanton) &#8211; fat dumplings that are really plump prawns wrapped in smooth skin.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Served either dry or in soup, the former is our preferred version. Tossed in a special sauce and topped off with prawn roe, and presented with a bowl of wanton soup. The soup version is simpler &#8211; just unpretentiously a noodle soup dish that warms thy soul.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Wanton Noodles are everywhere in Hong Kong, and Mak&#8217;s Noodle is a unanimous favourite all these years.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Quite simply &#8216;sweet soup&#8217; in English, Tong Sui refers to a group of Cantonese desserts such as red bean soup, gingko barley soup, gui ling gao, walnut paste and jellied beancurd. Tong Sui stalls are aplenty in Hong Kong, and many of them devote themselves to preparing fresh traditional desserts daily in-house.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It is hard to choose pick just one favourite Tong Sui, so we will leave this open for your exploration. But we are pretty certain that even if you do not have a sweet tooth, you will find it hard to resist a bowl of Tong Sui when in Hong Kong.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Drop by Chiu Chow Hop Shing, a 50-year-old institution in Kowloon City that dishes out some of the best traditional sweet soups from Chiu Chow province.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Cha Chaan Teng is a type of Chinese tea cafe commonly found in Hong Kong. They are the heart and soul of the city, and locals patronize them for the Hong Kong cuisine. Now, what exactly is Hong Kong cuisine? I think this question is just as difficult as what is Singapore food. Hong Kong cuisine is probably best described as a cuisine that is shaped by different influences from Cantonese cuisine, other Chinese food and a little of the international flavor (due to the fact that it is a global city).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">There&#8217;s no way you can leave Hong Kong without eating in the <em>Hong Kong Cafes</em>. We had the famous stocking milk tea, a &#8216;western&#8217; breakfast set and a Po Luo Bao (pineapple bun). Everything was so good!</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">&#8220;Where can I find the <em>best roasted goose in Hong Kong</em>?&#8221; I asked my friend. &#8220;Yung Kee Restaurant&#8221; she replied without any hesitation.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">We were on our way to Lang Kwai Fong after a long day of shopping at Citygate outlets &amp; Mong Kok and it was by pure accident that we stumbled upon <strong>Yung Kee restaurant</strong>. You are not going to believe this, but we didn&#8217;t even know that <em>this</em> was the famous roasted duck place until we sat inside. We waited a good twenty minutes for a table, and the only reason was because we were too tired and hungry to go anywhere else.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It was my first time having roasted goose, and it was a bonus to have it at one of the finest Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong. Was it really the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">best roasted goose in Hong Kong</span>? To be fair, it was good, but not fantastic or out-of-this-world. If you are a regular visitor to Hong Kong, I need some recommendations for the best roasted goose please!</p>

Most of the shops only do wholesale business, but there are quite a few that sell to individuals too. If you are hungry after a day of shopping, the streets in Sham Shui Po have plenty of eateries. Remember to get egg tarts, some street food like chicken wings &amp; sausages, and there&#8217;s <a href="http://www.ladyironchef.com/2010/08/19/gong-cha-bubble-tea-singapore/">Gong Cha bubble tea</a> there too!</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">It is highly unlikely that this photo will win a prize for any photography competition, but what you see in this frame is the popular Tai Cheong egg tarts. Many people agreed that <strong>Tai Cheong bakery</strong> at Lyndhurst Terrace (near Central Soho) has the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">best egg tarts in Hong Kong</span>. It was such a shame that we only bought half a dozen of egg tarts which we finished easily once we got back home at night.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Egg Tarts are quite possibly the best thing in this world. And you know what&#8217;s the best part? The egg tarts from any random bakeries in Hong Kong taste just as good.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m a devotee after just one bite of their <strong>egg cupcake</strong>. Soft, light, and fluffy, the egg cupcakes are really very good. And 3 for one dollar is cheap okay! I can easily finish half a dozen on my own. Gosh, i&#8217;m going to get more of them the next time.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s also the bigger egg cup cake, which had <strong>red bean paste fillings</strong> at the bottom. But i was rather disappointed with it because there wasn&#8217;t anything special with the red bean paste, and the filling was just a little. I&#8217;ll think that three small ones are more than a big one, so take the 3 small one for a dollar instead.</p>

<p>Their <strong>red bean biscuit</strong> was also worth the try, crispy pastry skin with generous fillings of the red bean paste.</p>

<p>Initially i was unsure about the <strong>egg tart</strong> because it didn&#8217;t seem to be very nice. But boy I had to take back my words after eating it. The egg custard was those watery kind, smooth and eggy!</p>

<p><strong>Balmoral Bakery</strong> is a very old-school bakery which is evident from the box they use for their bakes. Located at <strong>Sunset way</strong>, the bakery offers the type of breads and pastries which we grow up together with, but sadly are slowly disappearing from our sight.</p>
<p>Under the &#8220;undue&#8221; influence of my <strong>secret</strong> <strong>food partner</strong>, we jogged from our place to Sunset way, and pay the bakery a visit. She introduced me to Balmoral Bakery as she has been munching on their breads since young.</p>

<p>The <strong>custard buns</strong> are the star of the show! Billed as Balmoral Bakery&#8217;s signature item, the custard buns are really excellent! There are other customers who brought half a dozen or more at a go. Must try!!</p>

<p>I liked this one! The <strong>cake</strong> is very soft and fluffy, whipped cream in the center, and sugar white powder spread on top.</p>

<p><strong>Total Bill</strong> for 5 items comes up to $5.50. I only brought 5 items as this is my first time there, but my secret food partner brought about more than 10 items!</p>
<p>The bread and pastries at Balmoral Bakery are mostly in the range of $0.80-$1.50, and there are really a lot of different types of traditional bakes which isn&#8217;t so commonly found nowadays. Go, and relieve your childhood memories!</p>
