Affordable Soufflé Pancakes Cafe, Fluff Stack is now officially halal-certified. It’s probably the first Japanese soufflé pancake cafe in Singapore which is halal-certified.

One thing that definitely sets Fluff Stack apart from other soufflé pancake cafés has got to be the price point. While soufflé pancakes tend to be priced at a premium, the ones at Fluff Stack start from S$8.80 which is pretty affordable!

Fluff Stack started in Suntec City last year and it has recently opened its second outlet at Northpoint City.

SweeT.Rex at Alexandra Village Food Centre is another halal-certified soufflé pancakes hawker stall that you can try out.

Poulét Singapore French Roast Chicken is now officially Halal-Certified. Known for its Roast Chicken which comes in three different sauces (Diane sauce, mushroom cream sauce and cranberry sauce), Poulét is a casual dining restaurant that offers relatively decent French dishes at reasonable prices.

All Poulét outlets other than the location at Kallang Wave Mall have received their halal certification.

Out of the three sauces, we love their signature Roast Chicken with mushroom cream the most. And if it’s your first time dining at Poulét, you have to add on the side of Mash Potato.

While you may be there primarily because of their excellent roast chicken, it would be a pity to pass up on the Tiramisu, which is served in a jar. It is certainly one of the better tiramisus you can find in Singapore.

With swanky malls like ION and 313 Somerset, who even goes to the older drabby ones such as Far East Plaza? Unless you’re thinking of getting a piercing or tattoo, you’d probably not set foot in there.

Well, then you’re missing out. As shabby as Far East Plaza looks in comparison to its glammed-up neighbours, this shopping centre is an absolute gem for affordable eats in the town area.

If you’re bent on getting a fix of comforting fish soup in Orchard, you’d better head down to Cross Straits Restaurants early. This popular, modest eatery does a pretty solid bowl of Sliced Fish Soup (S$5.80), which draws in sizable crowds during lunchtime.

Ban mian stalls are a dime a dozen, but those that make their own noodles are rare gems — Greenview Cafe is one of them. This hidden eatery does some of the best handmade mee hoon kueh we’ve ever tried.

Their Dry Mee Hoon Kueh (S$4.80) is a must-try. The irregularly-shaped kueh is excellently bouncy with a nice resistant bite. Tossed in a savoury, mildly spicy sauce, the doughy morsels are insanely addictive.

HAINANESE DELICACY

Mention “Far East Plaza chicken rice” to any foodie and they’ll immediately know what you’re talking about. Hailed as one of the best places for chicken rice in Singapore, Hainanese Delicacy has been tossing out impeccable plates of chicken rice for decades.

Whether you get their roasted or steamed chicken, expect only the most tender and silken meat. Heck, even the breast meat tastes almost as soft as fish. Their Half Chicken (S$20) is good for sharing among three to four pax.

Hong Hu Express is a great option for those weekend nights when you’re out with friends looking for dinner but all the budget-friendly spots seem to have a full house. Modestly dressed with plain tables and empty walls, this place’s interior certainly doesn’t match up to the quality of their food.

From steaming baskets of siew mai to liu sha baos (salted egg yolk custard buns), dim sum is a well-loved staple among Singaporeans.

Yet, we are firm believers that the best dim sum should not only be yummy, but affordable too. Tang Tea House is a halal dim sum eatery at Simpang Bedok known for their budget-friendly scrumptious dishes.

The Coffee Buns (S$3.40/3 pcs) were up first; from afar, we could already smell the mouth-watering aroma of coffee. The soft bun tore apart easily, oozing thick coffee paste; the gooey filling melted in our mouths with a bold coffee scent that lingered on our palates. The paste wasn’t cloyingly sweet as well.

We thought it was a novel twist to run-of-the-mill lotus or red bean paste; we can safely say this coffee dish was our favourite!

Next, we tried the Hong-Kong Style Egg Tarts (S$4.20/3 pcs). The crust was crispy and flaky with a biscuit-like texture. The wobbly goodness was also soft and slightly sweet in the middle without an overpowering taste of butter. It was a pastry done well, unlike other egg tarts that tend to be overly crumbly.

We would recommend trying the Steamed Rice Roll with BBQ Chicken (S$4.20/1 plate) too. The skin of the rice roll was Q and thick enough to hold a substantial amount of chicken filling. Paired with the sweet soy sauce, the piquant dish had a hint of tanginess. The chilli also gave the dish an extra kick of spice.

The Deep-Fried Shrimps Dumping with Mayonnaise (S$4.70/3 pcs) was incredibly crispy and the meat to skin ratio was just right. It had a generous amount of filling, with oozing meat and prawn. Dipped into the mayo, the toothsome dumpling was an explosion of sweet and savoury flavour.

Out of the lot, the Steamed Chicken Dumpling (S$4.70/4 pcs) was our least favourite. The skin was slightly doughy, and the chicken stuffing a tad bit mushy. We would have preferred if the skin was thinner and the chicken had more bite. The filling lacked seasoning as well, and the vinegar sauce overpowered the dumpling’s taste.

For those who are still mourning the departure of Kenny Rogers Roasters in Singapore since they announced it in April, dry your tears because they are making a comeback in Singapore.

Nestled within the contemporary and sleek XY Hotel Bugis Singapore is Kava Bistro. This cosy little bistro and cafe is run by a family dishing up Halal-Western fare that are fused with Asian flavours.

With a swan floatie drifting through the pool seen overhead through the transparent panel while Queen’s Radio Ga Ga played in the background, stepping into the space that Kava Bistro occupies is like entering a problem-free world.

From Classic Cheeseburgers to Kava K-Pop Drumlets and Ondeh-Ondeh Cinnamon Rolls, Kava Bistro’s unique food selection and charming ambience enraptured us within the first few minutes we were here.

The first dish we had was the Classic Cheeseburger (S$10). The burger instantly appealed to us with its oozy cheese, pillowy buns and thickly-cut sweet potato fries.

Although the beef patty of the burger required more seasoning, we thoroughly enjoyed the other aspects of the burger, particularly the gooey cheese that perfectly covered every inch of the huge patty.

The delicious thick-cut sweet potato fries were made up of two kinds of sweet potato—the orange and the yellow.

We also ordered the Classic Aglio Olio (S$12) which was served along with cherry tomatoes and smelled incredibly fragrant.

The linguine was perfectly al-dente and thoroughly coated in olive oil, flakes of black pepper, and chopped bits of red chilli and garlic. Although the pasta dish held quite a kick of spice from the black pepper and red chilli, we enjoyed the dish for its simplicity and how deliciously aromatic it was.

However, there are certain situations where bargaining in Singapore is acceptable. This includes flea markets at *SCAPE Marketplace and Lucky Plaza.

Finishing our meal off with the Ondeh-Ondeh Cinnamon Roll (S$5), this baked goodie is a combination of the very best of both desserts!

We were greeted with a whiff of the pandan fragrance upon taking our first bite, then it was followed by the sweetness of gula melaka. There was also a faint hint of cinnamon and coconut. This creative dessert is definitely not one you should miss out on despite it looking a bit more intimidating with its rich shade of green.

Tucked away at Kallang Wave Mall is Omoomodon, serving Halal Korean fusion rice and noodle bowls with a unique twist. Omoomodon is pronounced as ‘Omo-Omo-Don’. ‘Omo-omo’ is derived from the popular Korean slang “Oh My!”, while ‘don’ is translated to bowl in Japanese. The Korean expression in the name is used to depict pleasant surprise when their diners tuck into tasty customisable fusion bowls.

The wallet-friendly prices mean you will not have to break the bank. With the option to customise your meal exactly how you want—from your own rice bowl to a warm bowl of ramen or a delicious plate of steak—there are endless possibilities to what you can choose at Omoomodon.

We ordered the Omo Remix (S$12) and the Chasuken Ramen (S$13.50). The Omo Remix was served with Korean White Rice, Ebi Tempura, Chicken Cutlet, Pumpkin Croquette, Curry, Nori, Furikake and Onsen Tobikko.

The Chicken Cutlet was tender and did not lose its juiciness in the process of deep-frying. The Ebi Tempura was tasty and the batter for this was well-seasoned. The highlight of the three was definitely the Pumpkin Croquette; we were surprised by how creamy and mouth-watering the inside was at first bite, and it contrasted nicely with the crispy breadcrumb coating.

The egg was still oozy when we cut into it, and the short grain rice was fragrant and fluffy.

The Chasuken Ramen came in a large portion with Soy Garlic Broth, Chicken Char Siew, Onsen Tobikko, Black Fungus, and Nori. The egg for this dish was flowy as well, giving the dish a creamier flavour. The succulent Chicken Char Siew was slightly sweet from the marinade and was absolutely delicious.

The noodles were springy and complemented the star of the dish wonderfully: the Soy Garlic Broth. Incredibly flavourful without being too salty, we loved the broth so much and needless to say, we completely devoured this entire dish.

By the time we finished our meal, lunchtime came around and Omoomodon was packed with young workers awaiting a table. Clearly, this restaurant is a popular lunch destination.
