20 Cafes in Singapore’s Residential Neighbourhoods

Neighbhourhood Cafes Guide

A few years ago, the idea of cafes opening at residential neighbourhoods was simply farfetched and almost impossible. Fast forward to today, cafes are sprouting in these unassuming neighbourhoods – mainly because of cheaper rental – and we are certainly not complaining because everyone has its own charm and they are lovely and cosy in their own rights.

Here is a guide to 21 cafes that have opened in the quaint residential neighbourhoods around Singapore.

Patty & Bun Burger London

Smokey Robinson Burger

Messy, greasy and fingers-licking good, Patty & Bun’s Smokey Robinson Burger (£8.50) is the perfect burger. It comes with everything you need in a burger – caramelised onions, bacon, smokey mayo, cheese, tomato, lettuce, and a beef patty which is cooked to perfection. We wolfed it down within minutes. It was, hands down, the best burger that we have had in London.

8 Best Lobster Rolls You Must Try In Singapore

Singapore Best Lobster Roll

So the lobster roll trend has finally hit our shores! We have been waiting for this day to come, and the only times we could ever satisfy this craving used to be those holidays to New York City and London. But gone are those days when we’d pin so hard for a good lobster roll fix and had to sleep off the craving, because much to our delight, more restaurants in singapore are rounding up their menus with their own renditions of this ever popular dish. Or snack. Whichever is more appropriate, depending on your appetite. One is definitely not enough for us.

Now, why is lobster roll so popular, you may wonder. We’d tell you exactly just why – chunks of juicy lobster meat doused in mayonnaise that sits within a toasted buttered brioche, every mouthful bursting with sweetness from the fresh flesh; how do you even go back to normality once you’ve had a good lobster roll?

It took us a while to sum this post up, because we wanted to try the popular ones in town before we present you this list that you should bookmark. We went on a trail to scout for the best versions, and here, we share with you the best lobster rolls in singapore that you must try:

Rakuichi Japanese Restaurant’s Aburi Sushi

Rakuichi

Our usual go-to Japanese restaurant in the Novena neighbourhood is Tomi Sushi Bar, but when we were in the area last week, we wanted to try a new place for a change.

Located at the ground floor in the same building as Oasis Hotel, Rakuichi Japanese Restaurant has been around for a few years, and while we have noticed its branch in Dempsey Hill before, we never thought of trying it now until now.

Man, we’ve been missing out. Its much-lauded aburi sushi deserves a special mention. The Tokubetsu Set (S$28.60) – includes a salad, an assortment of 6-piece aburi sushi, stir-fried fish head with teriyaki sauce, seafood & vegetable tempura, miso soup, and sesame ice cream – is extremely value-for-money. There are also cheaper lunch sets like saba shioyaki, shake teriyaki and katsu don at S$18.60.

Seasonal Tastes’ Themed Night Buffet Dinners

Seasonal Tastes Dessert

Seasonal Tastes at The Westin Singapore has recently launched its themed night buffet dinners. Themed nights always mean more excitement and something special to look forward to, and with six different themes every night from Monday to Saturday, we just granted ourselves plenty more reasons to visit Seasonal Tastes again and again.

Mondays is Mama Mia Pasta Night. Go with a completely empty stomach, for you will be in for a treat – expect nothing short of a dream-like range of handmade pasta prepared with different sauces.

On Tuesdays, we pay homage to the Executive Chef’s roots with German Classics making a guest appearance. Crispy pork knuckles, farmer’s meatloaf, braised veal shank, bratwurst, kassler and sauerkraut… You get the idea. Go on and make your reservation!

We are big fans of Seasonal Tastes’ pastry chef, for she never fails with her divine creations, and the dessert buffet is always something that we look forward to the most. Wednesdays are ladies’ nights, with a dessert shrine – featuring sweets like profiteroles, mini cakes, cupcakes, macarons, and a berry pink chocolate fountain – that is specially set up with the ladies in mind. Go on, indulge in those sweets with your girls. We won’t tell.

Celebrate Thursdays with a Thai feast and enjoy favourite dishes like Thai green papaya salad, phad Thai with prawn and chicken, tom yum goong, and Chiang Rai-style steamed jumbo prawn.

Seafood buffet

Fridays are for T.G.I.F and for everyone to get together and catch up. What better way to welcome the weekend than to spend it with treasures of the sea? Seafood Nights at Seasonal Tastes come with the freshest selection of crustaceans like lobsters, crabs, prawns, mussels and freshly shucked oysters, and we trust you know that you should not miss this for the world.

Not forgetting the guys, Saturdays are your days to get your pals to pig out on carving and roasts. The chefs have prepared a fine selection of tender roasts – such as cold roast beef, crispy pork belly with cauliflower puree, slow-roasted beef prime ribs and BBQ beef short ribs – that will satisfy the carnivore in you.

Seasonal Tastes’ themed night buffet dinners at The Westin Singapore are priced at S$62++/pax for Monday to Thursday, and S$75++/pax on Friday. Diners enjoy complimentary per entry parking from 6pm onwards (Monday to Friday) and all-day (Saturday to Sunday).

Tian Kee & Co: Old-School Provision Shop-Turned-Cafe Singapore

Tian Kee Co

Like going back in time and stepping in to an old Singapore; so surreal, with hints of nostalgia.

Tian Kee & Co is nestled within the old estate of Dakota, and its rural setting exudes an old charm that is so rare in the present Singapore. When we first drove past the unassuming block of low-rise flats, we saw a lovely sight – simple but traditional-looking monochrome signboard, wooden high table and seats, and ceiling fans. We knew we were going to like this retro concept.
