Chef Joel Robuchon

EXCLUSIVE: Chef of the century, cookbook author, and restauranteur with celebrity restaurants and outlets all across the globe – Hong Kong, Las Vegas, London, Macau, Monaco, Paris, Bordeaux, Taipei, Tokyo and Singapore… With a total of 28 Michelin Stars, Joël Robuchon is one of the most famous chefs in the world. And one of our favourites too, of course.

We met up with Joël Robuchon when he was in town to visit Joël Robuchon Restaurant and L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon at Resorts World Sentosa. It was an exclusive session, and we spent a morning chatting with him to find out about his thoughts about the world’s food scene, as well as catching up on the latest updates about his business. We also had the chance to experience the magic in Joël Robuchon Restaurant’s kitchen - the sacred ground of haute cuisine – to catch glimpses of the talented team at work, and to learn from executive chef Michael Michaelidis on how to prepare a Salmon Tartare.

Tolido’s Espresso Nook Cafe & Coffee Bar Singapore

Tolido Waffles

Sitting in the heart of Crawford, just 5 minutes away from Bugis and Haji Lane, Tolido’s Espresso Nook has its series of specialty brews that come with photo-worthy latte art.

But there is definitely more than coffee here here. Small as it may be, it is actually pretty cosy with the bustling activities taking place indoors. Less indie, but no less happening. It is a familiar haunt for regulars and friends, and the warmth of the crowd really grew on us. It felt like crashing a party, but less intimidating and still reserving your own space.

If you are in the neighbourhood and like us, you do not fancy the crowd, escape to Tolido’s Espresso Nook for a cuppa and some casual but gratifying food. Here are some of our favourite items on the menu:

Tóng Lè Private Dining: The Best Chinese Fine Dining Restaurant in Singapore

Tong Le Private Dining Restaurant

How does it really feel like to be at the top of the world? Fantabulous, of course. What about dining while looking down at the marvellous world below you? Even better.

Well, Tóng Lè Private Dining offers such a top-of-the-world experience. Sort of. It sits within the revolving tower of OUE building, and though it is on the tenth level, the experience spans across two levels and it is absolutely incredible. Using only the finest and most premium ingredients from around the world, expect world-class contemporary Chinese cuisine prepared by the team of highly-trained chefs, impeccable service by the team of polished wait staff, and a panoramic view of the Marina and Collyer Quay from the top. Tóng Lè Private Dining is indeed one of the best-kept secrets in town.

Our recent meal was one so remarkable that had us lingering for more. We are already planning a second visit back, and the two extremely value-for-money new sets – a 6-course Sky lunch (S$60/pax) and 7-course Heavenly Dinner (S$80/pax) — sweeten the idea even further. You might think an elaborate meal like this would cost a bomb; well, we thought so too. We were pleasantly shocked by the digestible price tags.

Tong Le Private Dining

Still not your everyday restaurant prices of course, but for the amount and (superb) quality of food you get, it is a pretty sweet deal and it is little wonder the restaurant is regularly packed with loyal fans every day.

If you haven’t tried, here is sharing our experience and we know for sure you’ll be a fan with just one try. Here’s why Tóng Lè Private Dining is the best Chinese fine dining restaurant in Singapore.

Things You Never Knew About Traffic/Parking Enforcement Officers (A.K.A Fatimah)

Traffic Enforcement Officer Fatimah

It is most definitely a Singaporean thing to call our car park attendants and traffic wardens “Fatimah”. We are not too sure how it started too, but the term has been around for as long as we know it, and everyone sticks to it conveniently – and affectionately.

But is everyone really “affectionate” towards them? Not really. If any, almost no one likes them. In case you haven’t realised the importance of their existence, “Fatimah” is an enforcement officer and he/she plays a major role in enforcing road safety. When everyone is cursing them every time they receive a ticket, have you ever considered the fact that without them, we would be facing chaotic traffic conditions and messy parking on a daily basis? Anyone can park right at the foot of your house, and even if you have designated season lots, non-residents can park all the same and leave you lot-less.

Let’s face it – when they issue a ticket, they are but doing their jobs. And it is a very thankless job that no one shows appreciation. We all want clear roads and our parking rights, but we need to remember who are the heroes who make this happen.

We followed the enforcement officers for half a morning to have a better understanding of how they carry out their duties. Boy, was it a lot of walking under the sweltering heat!

Today, we learn about the different kinds of enforcement officers and their respective roles, the common offences and offences you never knew about, their routines and daily challenges, and to debunk the common myth that they have “quotas” to hit for commission.

Here are the things that you never knew about traffic/parking enforcement officers.

Tips on How to Prepare for SIA Cabin Crew Interview

SIA Cabin Crew Interview

Sarong kebaya, red nails, a neat bun and a mega-watt smile.

As a young girl, I used to aspire to be one of those poised SQ girls clad in the iconic kebaya – to be part of the crew, and to globe-trot for a living. To many around me, it was but a high-class waitressing job; to me, it was an esteemed desire to provide world-class service in Singapore Airlines, and an opportunity to see the world.

When I finally turned nineteen, I mustered all the courage i had, and together with two other girlfriends, we went for the SIA cabin crew interview. So what is it that the interviewers at Singapore Airlines look out for, and what qualities must you possess to be recruited? We were as clueless as you might be now.

Honestly, there is no one manual that will provide model answers and step-by-step guides on how to ace the many rounds of interviews, but there is a certain formula and things to adhere to. Here, I share with you 8 tips on how to prepare for SIA cabin crew interview based on my own experience, alongside stories from many other friends who are part of the prestige cabin crew team.

Tipping in Singapore: Would Tipping Improve Service Standards?

Tipping in Singapore

When we were in the US, one of the daily happenings that we noticed is the stark difference in service and professionalism displayed by most of the restaurants’ waitstaff as compared to that in Singapore. We can’t help but wonder if the poor service standards in Singapore is due to the lack of a tipping system.

Waiters, by and large, is not a respected profession like doctors and lawyers. In recent years, chefs are starting to get more recognition due to media publicity of celebrity chefs around the globe. Waiters? Not a chance. And the irony is waiters are the frontline staff in the restaurant and they have the ability to make or break your dining experience.

What do you think? Would tipping improve service standards in Singapore? Here, we look into tipping in Singapore, as well as the pros and cons of tipping.
