One of the best meals that I had in Bali during my recent trip was at Merah Putih, a classy restaurant that serves traditional Indonesian cuisine for the purists, and at the same time, dedicating another column in the menu to providing options for Indonesian food with a modern interpretation.

Indonesian cuisine is a communal affair, and this is reflected in Merah Putih’s offerings of dishes in small and large plates. The dining concept is actually inspired by the local nasi padang, where you have an array of dishes to choose form – hence the small plates to share. The owner told us that he created the restaurant because whenever someone asked him where they could go for Indonesian food in a nice setting, he did not have an answer as there was not many options. So he created the answer by conceptualising and building Merah Putih where you can enjoy the classic dishes and also discover something new.

It is no secret that I love tonkatsu. Sushi and sashimi are great, but if I had to choose, I would go for tonkatsu anytime. So when I was in Tokyo last year, I made it my mission to find the best tonkatsu in the city.

There are many famous tonkatsu restaurants in Tokyo, but the place that everyone seems to agree is the best place to head to is Maisen Tonkatsu. They have many outlets in Tokyo, but go to the main shop in Aoyama – just a few blocks behind Omotesando Hills. The restaurant is located in a former World War II public bathhouse, which adds to the whole feel of dining there.

MU Parlour

Holland Village is known as a cluster of restaurants which has a mix of different cuisines. The newest addition to the area is MU Parlour – a cafe serving desserts, burgers, and cocktails. Prices range from $4 to $6.50 for a dessert, while you can get their ‘gourmet’ burgers for $13 to $16.

It is easy to miss MU Parlour if you are not paying special attention to the shops on the second level. It’s the kind of place that is introduced through friends’ recommendations. And this is exactly how we came to know about it.

I first heard of Mikuni Japanese Restaurant during their official opening in September last year. But I had something on and couldn’t make it for the launch party. Time passed quickly and somehow I didn’t get a chance to drop by for a meal.

Fast forward a few months, I received another invitation from Fairmont Hotel Singapore to visit Mikuni for their Winter Robata, a culinary special featuring Hokkaido’s finest produce and flavours.

Man Fu Yuan at Intercontinental Hotel – one of Singapore’s top Cantonese restaurants – has undergone a refurbishment earlier this year and it has since returned with a stunning decor and a new emphasis on Chinese tea.

While I liked their dim sum, I didn’t frequent the old Man Fu Yuan because the decoration was kind of boring. Boy was I impressed when I went there for lunch recently. The restaurant now has a nice contemporary look with classy butterfly chandeliers, exquisite hand-painted wall coverings, and natural timber floors.
