Iconic Colourful Flats At Rochor Centre Will Be Torn Down By 2016

rochor-centre

It is hard to miss the blocks of colourful public housings each time you pass by Bugis district. Erected since 1977, these flats are almost symbolic of the residential homes in Singapore. In fact, you might even remember seeing them at the billboards of Changi Airport’s arrival halls!

Approximately more than 80% of Singaporeans live in public housing and Rochor Centre is just one of the many Housing Development Board flats in Singapore. But as with Singapore’s rapid economic growth, old buildings will always eventually have to make way for newer developments. Rochor Centre is said to be demolished in 2016 for a new express way and existing residents will have to move.

Do drop by Rochor Centre whenever you can before this place vanishes forever and becomes a distant memory.

Inter Restaurant: Our All-Time Favourite Thai Restaurant in Bangkok

Inter

A perennial favourite in Bangkok is Inter Restaurant at Siam Square Soi 9. Whenever we are at the Land of Smiles, we will find ourselves returning to this humble eatery for a meal or two. Or more.

Well, don’t expect a lavish interior nor impeccable service. Inter is completely opposite. It is unpretentious, the space is simple and sufficient but nothing fancy to boast, the staff are not the friendliest. But we love it oh-so-deeply because the kitchen whips up terrific Thai dishes at super affordable prices that range from THB 65 to THB 120.

InterContinental Singapore Hotel

InterContinental Singapore

We have stayed at several hotels in Singapore, and InterContinental Singapore is one of our favourite experiences. Where do we even begin? From the Peranakan-themed façade and minimalist luxury, down to the lush pillow menu, a stay with InterContinental Singapore is akin to that of spending time outside of home that you can still call home.

And how does this work?

Well, quite simply because the rooms are all designed to emulate a home, where there are no frills, where you feel pampered by the amenities, where no signs of commercialisation can intimidate you. We spent a night at the Shophouse Suite, and it was one staycation that left a deep impression on us (and can’t wait to return).

Right now, InterContinental Singapore is offering a weekend staycation package (S$255++/night) – for its deluxe rooms – that is specially designed for locals. Below, we will share more about what you can look forward to.

Izuju Kyoto Style Sushi

Izuju Kyoto Style Sushi

Sushi in Kyoto is not quite what we know sushi as. The stark difference is one that you must experience to remember Kyoto. Very unlike the regular sushi in the market that is commonly known by the world, the traditional Kyoto sushi has a rich history and is a culinary fixture that had us developing a new level of appreciation for the Inarizushi (inari sushi).

We found the legendary Izuju – one of the oldest traditional Kyoto sushi restaurant in the heart of Gion, just across the Yasaka Shrine. It is known to serve the best Kyoto style sushi in Kyoto, if not Japan.

Stepping in was like going back to the old Kyoto, with an intriguing interior and displays, every bit speaking of a certain history from their younger days. Even the paper talisman from the Atago Shrine has a story to tell.

In The Mood For Love Sushi Bar Bangkok

In the Mood For Love

In The Mood for Love is a very sexy and chi-chi sushi bar that simulates a funky lounge, complete with an open counter where the chefs prepare the sushi right before you. Staff are dressed in plain black and they keep a distance from the tables, but just as well because it gives plenty of room for the décor to speak with you. The plush sofa booths with accompanying vintage floral seats feel like granny’s home in Victoria, but the brass table-side lamps illuminate with a mysterious sexiness that somehow sets your mind to singing along with the sensual lounge music.

The faint whispers from the chefs and the intermittent laughs from neighbouring tables seemed so distant, as our souls were sunk too deep in the very atmospheric bar – not once did we feel intruded in our booth seat, and as the dishes were quietly placed on our tables, we were growing accustomed to this intimate dinner setting that we forgot for a moment that we were actually in the bustling Bangkok.
