Located along 107 Owen Rd, Heng Heng Bak Kwa Teh is an old-school eatery known for its traditional Bak Kwa Teh and steamed fish.

The famous eatery has been around for more than 30 years and it has garnered a loyal following over the years.

Other than its signature Bak Kut Teh (S$8), Heng Heng Bak Kut Teh also serves other dishes such as Pig’s Organs, Braised Intestines and Trotter, as well as vegetable soups in claypot.

You can also choose to add on abalones to your Bak Kut Teh.

They have a selection of fishes such as threadfin, pomfret and seabass, with prices ranging from S$20-S$50.

While the pork ribs were tender, the Bak Kut Teh broth was too light and mild for our liking.

The steamed fish, on the other hand, was the star with a tangy and flavourful sauce from the sour plum, tomato, sliced ginger, chilli, fermented soybeans and coriander.

There are not many such places left in Singapore and you should dine here to support them before they are gone forever.

Good news for those of you staying in the East of Singapore, the famous Hjh Maimunah has opened a new stall at Tampines Mall’s Kopitiam.

If you are a fan of Malaysian and Indonesian Nasi Padang fare, or a food lover who appreciates a restaurant’s commitment to its food tradition and heritage, Hjh Maimunah is a great choice for your next meal!

The original Hjh Maimunah sits along a narrow lane in Bugis behind the Masjid Sultan mosque and has been dishing out its famous Nasi Padang to its regulars for years.

What makes Hjh Maimunah stand out is how there is an innate love and care put into the food created. To preserve traditional recipes, ingredients are sourced locally and regionally, and no shortcuts are taken even for the most labour-intensive dishes.

As a result, the quality of food delivered is heads and shoulders above most of the competition, and their customers know it.

Honey Night is a Korean bar and bistro where you can get refreshing drinks on a hot day, Korean street snacks and mains to satisfy your hunger pangs. It is conveniently located in Grandlink Square, just walking distance from Paya Lebar MRT.

Gulp down a somaek tower, bite on chewy spicy rice cakes and indulge in hearty soups, while bobbing and singing along to K-pop hits. You don’t have to fly to Korea for that ahjumma’s kimchi stew anymore because you’re in for a treat at Honey Night with their authentic tasting Korean food fare!

We had the Deep Fried Boneless Chicken (S$13 for 3pcs). It was tender and the seasoning was kept to a minimum which brought out the fragrance of the meat itself. However, the batter was a little too thick, causing some mush underneath but still crunchy on the outside.

A thinner batter that was coated more evenly would’ve been better, but the sweet and spicy sauce that came along with it tasted oh-so-good with the chicken! Have it with a piece or two of the seasoned radish and you’ll overlook the flaws of the batter.

A must-order at every Korean restaurant, the Kimchi Stew (S$12) here was pretty well done – with just the right amount of spice with robust flavours of kimchi that warms your heart, especially on a rainy day.

Flavours were 10/10, and it was as authentic as it can get. Brownie points for the generous ingredients in the soup, including tofu, glass noodles, pork belly, kimchi and onions! You know a Korean restaurant is good if they can do kimchi stews well because it is a simple dish that is hard to perfect.

The Beef Bulgogi Set Meal (S$13) is a crowd favourite! It came with a bowl of short grain rice, seaweed soup and kimchi. Can we just say that the seaweed soup was one of the best seaweed soups we’ve had because normally seaweed soup tastes bland and smells of the sea, but this was so light yet flavourful and helps to cleanse your palette.

The beef was sweet, infused with natural flavours of the onions and is a match made in heaven with short grain rice. We enjoyed it but we felt that this dish would have been perfect if the beef was slightly more tender, maybe with a fattier part and had some sweet potato noodles added in just like those you can get in Korea.

Honey Night is a hidden gem in the Paya Lebar area and the prices are slightly lower than other Korean restaurants.

Did you know that Haw Par Villa’s name derives from the Burmese-Chinese Aw brothers’ personal names?

Boon Haw means “gentle tiger”, while Boon Par means “gentle leopard”. The Aw brothers were behind the renowned household brand Tiger Balm, and Boon Haw had created Haw Par Villa as a gift to Boon Par in 1937.

Haw Par Villa holds a piece of Singapore’s treasured past with a thousand statues and dioramas telling the tales of Chinese folklore, mythology, legends and history. It is hard to imagine that the theme park was a major local attraction during its peak in the 1970s and 1980s; particularly when Jewel Changi Airport just opened earlier this year.

Both of the attractions were created to draw in the masses. However, the stark contrast in the values of the different generations between the traditional cultural heritage site and Singapore’s latest dazzling crown jewel could not be more obvious.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

As we walked around the park, it was interesting to rediscover Chinese history and the mystical legends that our forefathers conveyed to us with wonder in their eyes. This was, after all, Boon Haw’s intention in creating the park; to teach and pass on traditional Chinese values and virtues to the following generations.

With recent efforts of revitalising the park, Haw Par Villa was closed for three months from December to February for repairs.

Several of the statues and dioramas have since received a fresh coat of paint and additional lighting improvements. The park’s operating hours have also been extended to 10pm, and entry is free. All of this is done in a bid to attract more visitors to the park in order to appeal to a new generation of tourists.

In addition, the park’s operators, Journeys, has also announced that they are working with event organisers to schedule more regular events at Haw Par Villa.

Visitors could take the daily day tour to learn more about the mystical stories behind the park’s landscape. If you’re feeling more adventurous, join the park’s weekly Twilight Tour, Journeys to Hell. The Twilight Tour takes place every Friday night from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, and you’ll even get a sneak peek at the upcoming Hell’s Museum.

The most popular attraction at the park, as most Singaporeans know, is the Ten Courts of Hell. Originating from traditional Chinese mythology, the Ten Courts of Hell depicts afterlife through exhibits that are not unlike those imagined in horrible nightmares.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

However, it was a pity that the little soup dumplings were stuck together and the skin tore when we tried to pick them up.

The Fried Rice with Eggs (S$6.80) was a decent plate of fried rice. Fragrant and full of eggy goodness, we wished it was more evenly seasoned.

Our favourite would have to be the Special Braised Beef Noodle Soup with Beef (S$9.80). The beef broth was hearty and even had a slight mala taste that warmed our bellies. It also came with tender beef chunks that were most likely stewed for hours. However, the dish would have been complete if the noodles were chewier.

Singapore has no shortage of scenic places to take a stroll through whether for your health or plainly just to get out of the house. There are a plethora of gorgeous spots here to immerse yourself in nature, exercise, chill with your loved ones or just have some alone time.

But Singapore, contrary to what the media portrays, is far more than just Gardens By The Bay. One of the more picturesque ones out of the lot is the iconic Henderson Waves. The bridge stands 36 metres above Henderson Road and is Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge, providing people with a spectacular view of Keppel Harbour.

To see the bridge in a different light, you can also come down at night from 7pm to 2am to watch the bridge become illuminated with mesmerising LED lights that give it a lovely, soft glow.

In a tropical, almost unforgivably humid country like Singapore, ice cream is essential. And fortunately for us, there are lots of ice cream options to choose from, from artisanal ice cream parlours, convenience store varieties and even those sold on carts along Orchard Road.

At its heart, ice cream is merely a composition of milk and cream but what sets a good one apart from a great one is the quality of the ingredients used and the careful manipulation of sweetness and richness. A brand that never fails to exceed expectations, presenting an intensely pleasurable experience with every lick, is Häagen-Dazs.

In the spirit of Christmas, the colossal brand has released two limited edition flavours—Cream Cheese Mochi and Tiramisu Mochi. An extraordinary marriage between traditional Asian mochi and European desserts, each and every soft, pillowy morsel presents a flavour and textural profile that far surpasses the common ice cream dessert. For an amplified experience, head on down to one of their stores to enjoy full-on crafted desserts featuring the two seasonal offerings such as the So Mochi Together Fondu and the oh-so-gorgeous Gondola Tiramisu.

A duo that aims to bring joy and sheer decadence to both the young and the old, what better way to soak up the festive Yule, than to cosy up around your loved ones, sharing and indulging in top-quality ice cream?

TWO DAZZLING NEW FLAVOURS

The brand prides itself on only sourcing the best ingredients from around the world to concoct their various ice cream varieties and their two new offerings are no exception. The mochi is steamed in Taiwan and the Tiramisu Mochi—along with its cream cheese counterpart—derive their cheese fillings from Europe.

Singaporeans love their cheese and as recent food trends have shown, we love having cheese in desserts, in tea, in buns, in everything.

Made with top quality cream cheese from Europe, the new Häagen-Dazs Cream Cheese Mochi (S$14.50) ice cream has delicate cheese notes that delivers the authenticity of a light, creamy taste just like a fluffy cheesecake. Scattered throughout like precious jewels are small delicately-sized, steamed Mochi pieces that do well to provide a chewy texture with every bite.

The new Häagen-Dazs Tiramisu Mochi (S$14.50) ice cream uses real Mascarpone from Italy and, again, features the pillowy steamed Mochi bits from Taiwan. Uniquely soft, almost buttery and accented with a pleasant chew, the ice cream boasts a heady profile of coffee with a slight sour tinge to it from the mascarpone. A surefire hit among coffee lovers, this was easily our favourite flavour between the two.

SO MOCHI TOGETHER FONDUE

Buying a tub and enjoying their ice cream in-store is never quite the same. In-store, they come up with a myriad of creations which change on a frequent basis depending on the product that’s in season, so as to amplify said limited edition flavour.

A royal rumble of various ice cream and sorbets, the So Mochi Together Fondu (S$46++) comprises Tiramisu Mochi, Cream Cheese Moshi, vanilla, Belgian chocolate, white peach & raspberry, green tea, mango and raspberry ice cream, along with mango and raspberry sorbet.

Along with fruit and cookie accompaniments that serve to provide vibrancy and texture—all neatly arranged around a pot of melted chocolate—this massive treat is ideal for sharing among a family and is also a great way to try out all their flavours.

BISTRO PARIS

Elegantly plated, the Bistro Paris (S$21.90++) sees a cheesecake that’s adorned with a berry purée, macadamia nuts, kiwi bits, biscuits and various chocolate elements. The ice cream of choice for this dessert is the Cream Cheese Mochi and to balance out the richness of it, a healthy scoop of raspberry sorbet.

CHEESE FOAM GREEN TEA LATTE

Providing a subtle bitter-sweet flavour, the Cheese Foam Green Tea Latte (S$8.90++) is an excellent choice to lounge about with. Topped with a sweet cheese foam, the otherwise robust bitter flavour is given an added surge of sweetness.

Served alongside it is a brittle along with a scoop of the Cream Cheese Mochi ice cream.

GONDOLA TIRAMISU

A dessert that’s literally too beautiful to consume, the Gondola Tiramisu (S$19.90) amazes with its intricate detail and promise of sheer decadence with every eager mouthful.

A wonderful expression of the new Tiramisu Mochi ice cream, a bowl made entirely out of chocolate is fitted with lady finger biscuits and additional coffee and vanilla-flavoured ice cream are added to further emphasise the apparent notes of coffee and rich cream. Caramel brittles are also scattered around the plate to provide texture and a profound nutty flavour.

TIRAMISU COFFEE

The Tiramisu Coffee (S$7.10++) is essentially a liquified version of the Italian dessert, right down to the creamy core. This coffee-intense beverage packs sweetness and a delightful hint of vanilla that is nicely underscored by a strong, subtly bitter hint of coffee—a good reminder that we were still threading along the lines of a flavoured coffee rather than a dessert.

Sweet, robust and creamy in all its glory, this unique cuppa is perfect should you ever be hankering after a midday pick-me-up.

Haidilao—famous hotpot restaurant chain from China—opens the world’s first restaurant run by robots in Beijing.

No, this isn’t something out of a sci-fi movie. It’s very much real, and it won’t be long before they bring it from Beijing to Singapore too.

Thanks to a collaboration with between Haidilao International Holding Ltd. and Panasonic Corporation, this joint venture sees to the world’s first eatery with a fully automated kitchen and staff. That’s right; from taking orders, preparations and delivering raw meat and vegetables to the table, the robots do it all.

It’s hardly surprising, considering that China is so far ahead with its cashless technology and automated services. This automation will also lower labour cost and boost efficiency, boosting Haidilao’s plan to expand worldwide. It is, after all, difficult to expand to that size in terms of manpower alone, so this shift away from manual labour is really just part and parcel to reach their goal of 5,000 outlets worldwide.

What do you think about it? Sooner or later, the only other human faces you’d see in Haidilao are just your fellow diners. Not going to lie though, we’d love to see a robot fling around some hand-stretched noodles too.

Many cafés in Singapore deliver in terms of aesthetics but we dare say that finding one that boasts marvellous interiors and brilliantly fuses the best of two very different cuisines is on a whole different level.

Helmed by the team behind Birds Of A Feather over at Amoy Street, Halcyon & Crane is a new café that recently opened up in The Paragon, Singapore, whose menu focuses on Modern-European dishes with a touch of Sichuan flavours. Most of their dishes feature a myriad of Szechuan spices and while rich, aromatic and authentic in flavour, Halcyon & Crane keep their dishes fairly healthy with the use of wholesome grains and fresh fruits.

Hankering for a memorable brunch in the heart of town? Here’s why you should make sure to pay Halcyon & Crane a visit the next time you are in the area.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Situated on the third storey of Orchard Paragon, Halcyon & Crane is decked out in minimalist furnishings with modern industrial touches that are both picture-perfect and cosy.

The area is separated into two—one is an open space with cosy seats that can seat approximately 50 people while the other features bar seats.

Coffee is serious business here at Halcyon & Crane. Their coffee beans are specially selected before going through the process of blending and roasting, resulting in coffee that is smooth, rich and fragrant.

We opted for a cup of Flat White (S$6)—a classic if you are looking for a drink to sip on while getting some work done.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We were pleasantly surprised that all the spices of what you would expect from a regular bak kut teh were there sans the meat, of course. Instead, what diners can expect from this dish is diced fried daikon, pink radish, braised nuts and thin dough crisp that will remind you of you tiao.

We had the Matcha Ice Cream (S$8++) which was complemented with a touch of blood orange puree, poached plums and pistachio bits. To be completely frank, we still prefer our normal creamy matcha ice cream but the cafe’s vegan rendition wasn’t too lacklustre either as the ice cream was rich with matcha flavours.

On top of those that we have tried, HRVST’s straightforward menu also includes other dishes such as Pumpkin Fettucine (S$16++), Hay Salt Baked Celeriac (S$18++) and desserts including Caramelised Pineapple Ring (S$8++) and Blackforest Cake (S$8++).

Having been in business for more than 150 years, Historic Hahndorf Inn is an established restaurant serving up the most authentic German grub you can find in Adelaide Hills. The dining establishment is both a restaurant and bar that comes with their own open fire places that keeps the place warm during winter.

The restaurant takes pride in serving food made from only quality ingredients that are sourced locally and also from suppliers in Bavaria and Austria. Till today, the family-owned business is still managed by fifth generation of the Holmes family—so diners can expect the menu to be forward looking, yet traditional to keep the original flavours intact.

Drop by Hahndorf Inn with an empty stomach—you will need it for the huge sharing platters of meats and their refreshing Bavarian beers.

Spacious to boot, the boisterous ambience, rustic setting and warm attitude of the waitstaff at Hahndorf Inn encourage you to linger on for more than just a meal. Diners can relax in style at the al fresco seating outside or head indoors for their long wooden communal tables if you happen to visit in a larger group.

Their signature Hahndorf Inn (Deluxe) Platte is a sight to behold.

Meant for groups of two to four, the deluxe Bavarian platter features their famous schweinshaxe, schnitzel, sausages, Bavarian rissoles, beef ribs, sauerkraut, rotkohl, potato salad, mashed potato, mustard, mushroom sauce and pork jus. This platter is definitely not for the fainthearted!

For something less over-the-top, the restaurant’s house specials also include Schweins Rippchen (pork ribs), Rinder Rippchen (beef ribs), Schweine Schnitzel (pork schnitzel) and a range of sides.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

The eatery gets pretty packed during the weekends and we highly recommend calling in for reservations. Nevertheless, service here is very efficient so you will never have to wait that long for a table.
