Under the Naruto Kanko Kisen (Naruto Sightseeing Steamship Co.), there are two different vessels—the Wonder Naruto and Aqua Eddy—which will take you to see the Naruto Whirlpools, the difference lying in the fact that the latter is an underwater sightseeing boat with an underwater observatory room.

We headed out to the Naruto Whirlpools on the Wonder Naruto which has a ticket fee of ¥1,800 per adult and ¥900 per child. The Wonder Naruto makes about 12 trips per day to the tidal pools and your entire trip last approximately 30 minutes.

Within a short ten-minute boat ride, we arrived at the Naruto Whirlpools which left us stunned and captivated by its beauty. The entire experience of watching the tidal pools form and dissolve was so thrilling and it is one sight that we would never be tired of.

For the best views of the whirlpool, do check out the monthly tide table—which will indicate the times with the fastest speed of the current in the Naruto Straits—and arrange your visit within one and a half hours before or after the stated time.

Otherwise, the prime viewing season for the Naruto Whirlpools would be during spring and autumn.

Long regarded as the Island of Gods on the clear waters of the Seto Inland Sea, Miyajima—an island just off the coast of Hiroshima—is one of the top three scenic spots in Japan which is home to the floating Itsukushima Shrine and O-Torii Gate.

Both the Itsukushima Shrine and O-Torii Gate carry religious significance to the Japanese and the former has been dedicated to the worship of the three daughters of Susano-o no Mikoto—Shinto god of the seas and storms. The Itsukushima Shrine and O-Torii Gate were also built over water so as to protect the purity of these religious sites.

Normally visited as a day trip from Hiroshima, a day full of adventure and discovery awaits you on Miyajima. This is one island that you must visit once in your life.

Awarded the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since December 1996, the Itsukushima Shrine is a national treasure of Japan which spans across an area of about 280 metres and 20 buildings.

Prior to entering the Itsukushima Shrine, visitors are welcome to cleanse their hands at the Chozuya as a symbolic act of purification. All you’d have to do is to use the ladle to scoop some water from the central catchment area and pour the water over both your hands.

The Itsukushima Shrine is a splendid example of Shinden-style architecture—an architectural style used in the building of residences for nobility in the past. Take the time to explore the entire complex which comprises several halls and shrines lit by lanterns. 

And just 200 metres ahead of the Itsukushima Shrine lies the O-Torii Gate, the iconic “floating” gate which many flock to Miyajima for. First constructed in 1168, the O-Torii Gate is considered the boundary between the spirit and human worlds and the vibrant vermilion colours of the gate is believed to keep evil spirits away.

Depending on the tide, visitors may have the chance to walk to the foot of the O-Torii Gate and pass through it. Otherwise, admiring it from land during high tide would be just as magical.

Admission to the Itsukushima Shrine will cost ¥300 per adult and ¥200 for high school students. Viewing of the O-Torii Gate is free.

Designated an important cultural property of Japan, Matsuyama Castle—one of the twelve preserved castles in Japan—is a beautiful piece of Japanese architecture which was constructed on Mount Katsuyama between 1602 to 1628 by Kato Yoshiaki.

But beyond its dreamy appearance, Matsuyama Castle served as a formidable fortress for the Katoh, Gamoh and Matsudaira family between 1603 to 1868 and was crucial in deceiving enemies into believing that they were attacking the residence of the feudal family but in actuality, were being led to their deaths. 

If you are visiting the Ehime Prefecture soon, you will not regret catering some time for the Matsuyama Castle.

As the Matsuyama Castle was built on a steep hill, the best and easiest way to access the castle would be to take the chairlift. Do note that the chairlift will not bring you directly to the Matsuyama castle and that you will need to walk a further 5 to 8 minutes uphill before reaching the edge of the castle.

Built by hand from stones sourced from the Yuzuki and Masaki Castle and their surrounding areas, the Matsuyama Castle is a perfect example of a feudal castle as its defense is situated at the top of the hill, which can only be accessed through the multiple guarded gates.

In addition, there are various “windows” in the castle’s walls which allows archers an excellent view for targeting oncoming enemies.

Separately, the Matsuyama Castle is widely regarded as one of the best places for cherry blossom viewing in Japan as the castle’s grounds are home to more than 200 cherry blossom trees.

But what we were absolutely smitten by was the grand panoramic view of the Ehime Prefecture, Seto Inland Sea, Mount Ischizuchi and the castle’s grounds, from the top of the Matsuyama Castle. The views were so mesmerizing that we could not help but feel as if we had stepped into a fairytale.

Admission to the Matsuyama Castle costs ¥510 per pax and an additional ¥510 for a round trip for the chairlift.

When in Japan, a visit to the hot spring is a must. A good place to go for a dip is Dogo Onsen—one of Japan’s oldest hot springs previously frequently visited by the imperial family.

Today, the Dogo Onsen remains a popular bathhouse spot bustling with both tourists and locals and it is said to have lent inspiration to the animated film “Spirited Away”.

#2 MATSUYAMA CASTLE

Constructed on Mount Katsuyama, Matsuyama Castle—one of the twelve preserved castles in Japan—is a stunning architectural feat which served as a fortress for the Katoh, Gamoh and Matsudaira family between 1603 to 1868.

Built by hand from stones brought over from the Yuzuki and Masaki Castle and its surrounding areas, spend time diving deep into the castle’s history, explore the hidden windows where archers once stood and enjoy vast views of the Ehime prefecture’s landscape at the top of the castle. 

#3 MICHI-NO-EKI TATARA SHIMANAMI PARK

Located within Tatara Shimanami Park, delight in Michi-no-eki Tatara Shimanami Park’s Iki-umi Gozen Set (¥1620/ S$19.31) which stars tasty and crispy sardine and conger tempura. You can also add on a plate of fresh and juicy squid sashimi for ¥2160 (S$25.75).

#4 MIKAN PICKING AT OMISHIMA ISLAND

A trip to a mikan farm should not be missed especially when in the Ehime Prefecture — the Citrus Kingdom of Japan. For just ¥500 (S$5.96), mikan lovers can pick endless mikan with no time limit imposed, subject to all mikan being consumed onsite. Advance bookings are required.

#5 PAPERMAKING AT TENJIN PAPER FACTORY

During the Edo Period and Meiji Period, the town of Uchiko prospered through the manufacture of vegetable wax and paper. Embark on a 20-minute paper making tour at the Tenjin Paper Factory (¥500/ S$5.96) where participants have the chance to make washi paper through traditional techniques.

Advance reservations for the tour are necessary.

#6 TAIMEISHI

A well-known speciality of the Ehime prefecture, Taimeishi (¥1000/ S$11.92)—done Uwajima-style—comprises thinly-sliced sea bream sashimi, raw egg, sesame seeds and chopped green onions layered over a bowl of fluffy rice.

#7 UCHIKO’S OLD TOWN & UCHIKO-ZA

Set aside as a Historic District Preservation Zone, Uchiko is an example of living history. Walk along Yokaichi Old Town—Uchiko’s preserved street of houses—which remains unchanged since Uchiko’s days as a vibrant hub for wax and paper production.

Another place you must visit in Uchiko is Uchiko-za. Built in celebration of Emperor Taisho’s accession in February 1916, it is a two-storey wooden theatre which was and continues to be home to various traditional Japanese performance arts such as kabuki, bunraku and rakugo.

#8 YUGAO KAISEKI DINNER

Your trip to Japan would not be complete without a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner: Kaiseki.

A highly recommended dining establishment for Kaiseki is Yugao, a quaint Japanese restaurant nestled on the third level of Yamatoya Honten. Some highlights of your meal include a selection of sea bream, bonito and shrimp sashimi and a personal wagyu grill.

At the Awa-Odori Kaikan Hall, visitors will be treated to performances such as “The Dance Past and Present” and “Nature Themes” by Awa No Kaze—a dance group exclusive to the facility—and will have the chance to join the group on stage after a step-by-step introduction to the dance.

#10 IYA KAZURA BRIDGE

A suspension bridge composed of mountain vines across the river of the Iya Valley, the Iya Kazura Bridge is a gorgeous bridge that deserves a visit. Legend tells the tale of the bridge being a vital transport system and of the bridge being constructed by refugee Taira clan members during the Gempei War. 

However, as the gaps between each wooden plank of the bridge are rather large and will be slippery during the rainy season, proper footwear is recommended for those keen on crossing the Bridge.

#11 NARUTO WHIRLPOOLS

Tidal whirlpools that occur along the Shikoku coast of the Naruto Straits, the Naruto Whirlpools are created from the meeting of currents between the Seto Inland Sea and Pacific Ocean.

As the size of the whirlpools may vary according to weather conditions, we highly recommend you to check the whirlpool schedules prior to your visit.

#12 OBOKE PLEASURE CRUISE

Awarded the status of both a National Nature Treasure and National Scenic Spot in Japan in 2014 and 2015 respectively, the Oboke Pleasure Cruise is a must-do for all visiting Tokushima.

You will be transported to a paradise overflowing with tranquillity and serenity created by the rows of massive rare crystalline schists which line both sides of the Yoshino river. And for those who are enthusiastic about natural rock formations, look out for “Rock the Lion”—a giant rock reminiscent of a lion’s head.

For the ultimate okonomiyaki experience in Hiroshima, Okonomimura—an okonomiyaki village—would be worth your time.

Among the 24 stalls in Okonomimura, our favourite was Suigun: a 40-year-old family eatery which has been in operation since the establishment of Okonomimura. An okonomiyaki set incorporating ingredients such as pork, prawn and squid is priced at ¥1,350 (S$16.0).

#14 HIROSHIMA PEACE MEMORIAL PARK & MUSEUM

At 8.15am on 06 August 1945, the first atomic bomb in the world changed the fate and lives of the people living in Hiroshima. In commemoration of the lives lost and severe suffering which ensued from this tragedy, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park stands as testimony to the urgent need for diplomacy and world peace over violent confrontation.

After visiting the park, make your way over to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum to hear the untold stories of victims of the atomic bombs, examine their personal belongings and relive the horrors of the past through interactive exhibits.

#15 DAISHO-IN TEMPLE

Daisho-in Temple presently serves as the headquarters of the Omuro Branch of the Shingon denomination of Buddhism.

With 27 different religious sites within the Daisho-in Temple, visitors will leave Daisho-in Temple with a comprehensive understanding and refreshed perspective of Buddhist teachings.

#16 ITSUKI COFFEE & MOMIJI MANJU

During your visit to Miyajima Island, there are plenty of eateries selling a waffle shaped like a maple leaf filled with various fillings: the Momiji Manju (¥150/ S$1.79). Filling flavours to try include cream cheese, custard cream, Adzuki bean jam, green tea and chocolate.

Another popular eatery to look out for is Itsuki Coffee, a space managed by the only coffee roaster on Miyajima where you can find freshly roasted and brewed coffee and the Hattendo Cream Pan.

#17 ITSUKUSHIMA SHRINE & O-TORII GATE

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since December 1996, Itsukushima Shrine is an excellent example of Shinden-style architecture and spans across a corridor of approximately 280 meters and 20 buildings.

And just 200 meters ahead of the Itsukushima Shrine is the O-Torii Gate—one of the most iconic landmarks of Miyajima. Depending on the time of visit and the levels of the sea, visitors may have a chance to walk right up to the O-Torii Gate.

#1 CHEONJIYEON FALLS

With its name translating to “sky connected with land”, Cheonjiyeon is a stunning waterfall surrounded by wild Dampalsu trees, Sanjuya trees and camellias. Further, the Cheonjiyeon Falls is an astounding 22 metres high, 12 metres wide and 20 metres in depth and stands picture perfect at every angle.

However, the most impressive aspect of the Cheonjiyeon Falls is its clear and deep waters which are home to Mutae eels.

#2 HALLASAN NATIONAL PARK

Arguably one of Jeju Island’s more memorable landmarks, Hallasan National Park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site which is treasured for its geological value. For example, there are 368 parasitic volcanoes around the main mountain and there are more than 1,800 kinds of plants and 4,000 species of animals along its mountainside!

To fully embrace the beauty and wonders of Hallasan National Park, a hike up Hallasan Mountain is recommended. Even if you are a hiking amateur, there is no need to worry as the mountain is relatively easy to hike and each hiking course is less than 10km in distance.

#3 JEJU FOLK VILLAGE 

To get a glimpse of what life was like in a Korean village during the 1890′s, visit Jeju Folk Village — a village holding a total of 117 houses and facilities including the Mountain Village, Hill-Country Village, Fishing Village and Shamanism Village. Visitors would have the chance to have a close look at folk items such as 1,627 woodenware, 1,046 bamboo ware and more.

And if you’re wondering why the Jeju Folk Village seems familiar, this is probably because you recognise it from the famous Korean drama—Daejanggeum—which filmed several scenes at the Jeju Folk Village.

#4 JEJU WATERWORLD

Looking for something more exciting and adventurous for your trip? Head on down to Jeju Waterworld, Jeju’s largest water leisure park which is a favourite for trips with the family or for a vacation with friends.

#5 JEONGBANG FALLS

Considered one of the top three waterfalls on Jeju Island, Jeongbang Falls is the only waterfall in Asia to have waters flowing directly into the ocean. If you chance upon the inscription “Seobulgwacha” during your visit, this is actually referring to Seobul—a servant of the Emperor of the Chinese Qin Dynasty—who had passed by the waterfall.

On top of the cliff, there is an observatory from which you will be greeted by dazzling views of the sea.

#6 JUNGMUN SAEKDAL BEACH

A holiday isn’t a holiday without some sun, sand and the beach. Characterised by its white arch-shaped shores filled with white, black, red and grey sand, Jungmun Saekdal Beach is a colourful beach destination popular amongst both locals and tourists.

Aside from chilling the day away, you can also participate in various marine and aquatic sports such as parasailing, water skiing, windsurfing and scuba diving. There really is no room for you to be bored at Jungmun Saekdal Beach!

#7 JUSANGJEOLLI CLIFFS

Just about 600 metres southwest from Daepo-dong lies the incredible Jusangjeolli Cliff which was formed from the lava that flowed into the sea of Jungmun when Hallasan Mountain erupted. A magnificent scene painted by stone pillars lined up along the coast, there is absolutely no question as to why the Jusangjeolli Cliff is designated as a cultural monument of Jeju Island.

For admission to the Jusangjeolli Cliffs, each adult will have to pay W2,000 and for teenagers and children, W1,000.

#8 LOVE LAND

Yes, you are not mistaken. Love Land is an outdoor adult theme park dedicated to sex, eroticism and sensuality so don’t be surprised when you are greeted by countless sculptures of male genitalia and erotic scenes around the park. There are a whopping 140 sculptures in total, not inclusive of hands-on exhibits and interactive sculptures such as the “masturbation-cycle”.

Due to the nature of this park, do note that visitors must be 20 years of age or older in order to enter. Admission fees cost W9,000 per adult and for a group of 30 pax, W8,000 per adult.

#9 MANJANGGUL CAVE

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Manjanggul Cave is one of the best lava tunnels in the world and it is famed for its interesting structures such as lava stalagmites that are 70 centimetres in length and for its lava tube tunnels.

Do note that only the first kilometre of the Manjanggul Cave is open for visitation. Regardless, there is so much for you to explore and see so keep your eyes peeled for rare wildlife and unique topographical features of the cave!

#10 O’SULLOC MUSEUM

The first tea museum opened by Amore Pacific in 2001, O’sulloc Tea Museum seeks to spread awareness about Korean teas and in general, Korean traditional tea culture. O’sulloc Museum has a tea gallery, eco-friendly resting area and cafe where you can have a taste of their delicious and pretty tea-based desserts.

#11 OEDOLGAE ROCK

For breathtaking views of the sunset, do take a stroll along the Oedolgo walking treks towards the Oedolgae Rock. Oedolgae Rock isn’t far from the shores of Sammaebong and it is also surrounded by other gorgeous islands such as Bum Island, Sae Island and Seonnyu Rock.

#12 SEONIMGYO BRIDGE

An arch bridge situated over Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, Seonimgyo Bridge is identified by the 7 nymphs that are carved on both of its sides. Also known as the Seven Nymphs Bridge, the nymphs on the bridge represent the Korean legend of the descent of seven beautiful nymphs from heaven in the evening.

#13 SEONGSAN ILCHULBONG PEAK

If you are a geography lover, you must include Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak in your itinerary. Created from a volcanic eruption that occurred some 100,000 years ago, there is a majestic crater atop the peak which is around 600 metres in diameter and 90 metres high.

And if you are visiting during the spring, you will be in for a treat as the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak will be surrounded by bright yellow canola flowers; a truly magical sight that will take your breath away.

#14 TEDDY BEAR MUSEUM

For those travelling to Jeju Island with children, a visit to the island’s Teddy Bear Museum would definitely be a good idea. Located in Jungmun Tourism Complex, the Teddy Bear Museum is what it is—the largest museum in the world solely dedicated to teddy bears. From collections of toy bears to lifelike replicas, you and your children will have a ball of a time.

#15 YAKCHEONSA TEMPLE

Recognised for its design which is reminiscent of Buddhist temples during the early Joseon Dynasty, Yakcheonsa Temple is an impressive Buddhist temple that is 30 metres high and covers a total area of 3,305 meters squared. 

Highlights to look forward to at Yakcheonsa Temple include the 5-metre tall statue of Vairocana on a 4-metre high pedestal, the 18-tonnes heavy Buddhist temple bell and the Gulbeopdang—the Dharma Hall built inside a natural cave. Admission to Yakcheonsa Temple is free.

#16 YEOMIJI BOTANIC GARDEN

Immerse yourself in sights of approximately 2,000 rare tropical and subtropical funds at the Yeomiji Botanical Garden, one of best botanical gardens within Asia. Take a walk through the Flower Garden, Water Lily Garden and of course, the Jeju Native Garden and spend some time appreciating the wonders of nature.

#17 YONGDUAM ROCK

Just to the north of Jeju City, the origin stories of Yongduam Rock—also known as Dragon Head Rock—range from mystical legends of dragons to stories of a white horse who yearned to be a dragon. Putting myths aside, Yongduam Rock was created from the erosion of coastal rocks by strong winds over the course of thousands of years.

One of the highly recommended dishes that we try with Coalesce’s S$8.80++ lunch set was the Spicy Balacan Seafood Linguine Pasta. As Belacan—shrimp paste made from a fermentation of tiny shrimp marinated with salt—is a condiment typically incorporated in curries, sauces or in stir-fry vegetables, we admit that we had our doubts as to its performance as a pasta sauce.

Well, did it work? Although the pasta was tasty, we felt that it lacked the rich and aromatic prawn flavours that we would usually identify with Belacan. Otherwise, we were served a good portion of pasta and seafood—albeit only squid and prawns—which justified the S$8.80++ price tag.

The other dish that we tried was the Roasted Pork Belly Rice Bowl with Ajitsuke Egg (S$10.80++). We liked that Coalesce kept the presentation simple yet elegant but were slightly disappointed with the execution of the roasted pork belly. Aside from having a crispy skin, the pork belly pieces were tough and were not seasoned sufficiently. We also felt that the Ajitsuke Egg and rice left much to be desired.

HARRY STYLES LIVE ON TOUR

One Directioners, this one is for you. Harry Styles will be coming to Singapore on 23 November 2017 for his first solo concert at The Star Performing Arts Centre. This tour follows the release of his self-titled 10-track debut album on May 12, which features hits such as the ‘Sign of the Times’.

BIG BAD WOLF HALLOWEEN MUSIC FESTIVAL

Singapore’s largest Halloween music festival is coming to Silos Beach, Sentosa, on 11 November 2017. OCBC CYCLE SINGAPORE 2017

Singapore’s largest mass cycling event – OCBC Cycle – is taking place this year from 17 November 2017 to 19 November 2017. For cycling enthusiasts, this is where everyone will gather together to ride safely on closed roads in the heart of Singapore’s city before ending the course at the Singapore Sports Hub.

There is just something so inviting about a hot bowl of rich and nourishing ramen and it is one of our go-to comfort foods whenever we need a perk me up especially on wet gloomy days in Singapore. But it is hard to find a sumptuous bowl of ramen that comes at a reasonable figure and this is why Ramen Hitoyoshi should be your next dining destination. 

Ramen Hitoyoshi is a 2-month old restaurant in Harbourfront Centre that all ramen lovers need to know. Brought to you by a partnership between local chefs Ray and Tan who have a breadth of experience in various dining establishments including Keisuke Ramen, Ramen Hitoyoshi’s menu features a selection of affordable yet tasty ramen options starting from S$10.90, and diners also have the opportunity to customise their own ramen.

Ramen Hitoyoshi focuses on Tonkotsu ramen in three varieties namely garlic, original and spicy. Aside from picking the variant of Tonkotsu broth for their ramen, diners can also choose the intensity of the taste of the soup, the amount of oil in their ramen, the thickness and texture of the ramen noodles.

And for those who need a little something to nibble on before receiving their order, Ramen Hitoyoshi provides containers of marinated bean sprouts and corn on each table to temporarily sate your hunger.

The Tonkotsu (S$10.90) comes with a piece of Chashu, black fungus, spring onion and a generous portion of ramen noodles. Our first impression of the Tonkotsu was the high viscosity of the soup; that would only mean that it must be chock full of flavour, right?

Well, yes. The thick and creamy Tonkotsu broth was oh so satisfying and we felt that for S$10.90, it was a steal. As for the Chashu, you may feel slightly disappointed when you see a singular piece but throw away all of such judgment because the meat was tender and had a melt-in-the-mouth texture.

Spicy Tonkotsu with Ajitamago (S$13.90) was another dish we enjoyed. Like the Tonkotsu, it had the same ingredient makeup except for the addition of chilli oil, Ajitamago and a scoop of spicy minced pork. For us, we did not feel that the broth was particularly spicy but it further enriched the taste of the broth.

One of Gochi-So Shokudo’s most value-for-money menu options is the Iberico Pork Belly Don (S$10). If you are feeling slightly hungrier, you can upgrade your meal with side sets such as Set C (S$4) which will give you a plate of Iberico Belly Enoki and Iberico Miso Soup.

The Iberico Pork Belly Don (S$10) comes with a generous portion of thinly-sliced Iberico pork belly, an onsen egg, a handful of seaweed strips and spoonful of sliced spring onion atop a bowl of hot, fluffy rice.

If you were to glance at the store front, you would notice that the Iberico pork belly will be grilled over a charcoal fire prior to service. The wonderful char-grilled taste was evident in every slice of meat and it further enhanced the taste of the pork belly. Elsewise, our onsen egg was executed perfectly and when broken, the egg yolk added a velvety texture over the whole don that was just so enjoyable.

The Iberico Loin Katsu (S$15.80) comes with a deep-fried Iberico pork loin cutlet, fluffy bowl of rice, sesame seeds and their special dipping sauce. Admittedly, we were hoping for something more when we compared the price point of the Iberico Loin Katsu (S$15.80)  to the Iberico Pork Belly Don (S$10).

Although the skin of the Iberico pork loin cutlet was a lovely golden-brown, we found the meat of the cutlet slightly dry and lacking flavour.

PHILIPPE GAULIER MASTER CLASS 2017

Following his successful workshop in 2015 on the Neutral Mask and Greek Tragedy, Philippe Gaulier returns with another workshop for theatre enthusiasts – Masked Play and Moliere. During the workshop, Philippe Gaulier will introduce participants to various types of masked theatre with Commedia Dell’arte Masks in his exploration of Moliere’s famous comedy of manners, The Miser.

The Sowing Room is a social enterprise that creates beautiful works from textiles and fabrics that have been made by women who have suffered abuse and those who are at-risk of facing such treatment. Coming to the ArtScience Museum on 19 August 2017, SERPENTIform is an exhibition which explores many aspects of the snake motif across time and space. The exhibition will also examine the impact of the snake motif on jewellery, arts, design, fashion, decorative arts and philosophy.

Public guided tours are available on 24 September 2017 from 11.30am to 12.15pm and 29 September 2017 from 3pm to 3.45pm. Mandarin Guided Tours will be taking place on 02, 09, 16, 23 and 30 September 2017 from 4pm to 4.45pm and the meeting point is at the exhibition entrance on Level 3.
