If you’re still contemplating whether to pay a visit to the iconic Bukit Timah Railway Station, a meal at 1932 Story Cafe should be good enough reason to start planning your visit. 

For the uninitiated, 1932 Story Cafe is a 1930s-themed cafe which has found its home in what used to be the Railway Staff Quarters at the Bukit Timah Railway Station. Apart from dishing up some pretty decent cafe fare, diners would also get to enjoy the nostalgic decorations and train memorabilia around the cafe. Best of all, 1932 Story Cafe does not charge GST.

Being the only dining option at the Bukit Timah Railway Station, 1932 Story Cafe can experience reasonably heavy foot traffic during weekends especially when the weather is good. Thankfully for us, we visited 1932 Story Cafe on a drizzly Saturday morning so the cafe was only about 50% occupied.

1932 Story Cafe offers diners the option to dine indoors or outdoors. Those who dine outdoors will get to enjoy the greenery (and a healthy does of Vitamin D), and those who dine indoors will get to enjoy the cafe’s tasteful nostalgic decor.

When you first step into 1932 Story Cafe, you will feel as if you’ve stepped into someone’s personal museum. The selection and placement of all decoration pieces felt intentional, and we especially loved the feature of the old-school ticket station in the center of the cafe — such a statement piece.

To pass the time when waiting for your meal, you can wander to the rear of 1932 Story Cafe to have a tour of their heritage gallery. Here, you’d find plenty of train memorabilia including an old railway telephone and tickets from the former KTM railway.

Apart from the usual coffee and tea offerings, 1932 Story Cafe carries a range of specialty drinks for the adventurous such as the Charred Smoke Latte (S$6) and Rose Latte (S$6). But for those visiting with young children, you can order as per what we did — a Piccolo (S$4.50) for dad, Matcha Latte (S$5.50) for mom and a Babycino (S$2.50) for the toddler.

What is brunch without some poached eggs? We ordered 1932 Story Cafe’s rendition of the eggs benedict — the Eggs Benedict & Honey Chicken Ham with Sourdough Bread (S$15.90).

On balance, we thought that 1932 Story Cafe did a pretty good job with the dish. The sourdough bread was lightly toasted and the poached eggs had an adequately runny yolk. That said, we thought that the Hollandaise sauce was slightly underwhelming and would have preferred for the sauce to have a slightly stronger egg flavour. 

If you’re keen to sample their local delights, we would definitely recommend ordering the Sesame Ball with Ground Peanut Filling (S$3.90 for 3 pieces). The sesame balls were freshly fried and the peanut filling was rather tasty.

Waffles are one of the best things to enjoy at a cafe. At 1932 Story Cafe, you can enjoy the Belgian Waffle (S$6) which comprises 2 pieces of waffles drizzled with honey and icing sugar. Whilst there wasn’t anything outstanding about the waffles, the waffles were crispy, light and fluffy.

Charlie Brown Cafe Singapore is closing on 31 Dec 2020. Located at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard, Charlie Brown Cafe is a halal-certified themed restaurant which also sells Snoopy and Peanuts character merchandise.

Other character-themed cafes and restaurants in Singapore that have closed in recent years include Hello Kitty Orchid Garden, Gudetama & My Melody Cafes, and DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe.

NEW HARRY POTTER-THEMED AFTERNOON TEA SET THAT IS “SIRIUS-LY” GOOD

Behold, the Hagrid’s English Afternoon Tea. Boasting a mixture of savoury and sweet items that are inspired by the fantasy novel, this is one extremely attractive afternoon tea set that will have the Harry Potter fans going crazy for. Just when you think you have seen it all, the tea set also lights up upon a flick of your wand!

Your wizard journey begins with the Bewitching Tuna Sandwich, followed by Potato Slyther-in Bacon with Cheddar Cheese, Avocado Salmon Weasled with Chicken Floss on Edible Magical Ladle and Turkey Bacon Quidditch Quiche.

Well, true Harry Potter fans will definitely be able to pick up familiar names and if you did not, then read those names out loud again!

Each dessert item was meticulously thought of before they are shortlisted to be in included in this tea set and boy, were we impressed by what we saw: the Owl Hootdoo Macarons that looked way too cute for consumption; tantalising Pumpkin Tartlets; Rock Cake served with Cauldron-Brewed Cream Cheese Dip; Rasp-Berry Potter & Mango-Nagall Mousse with its crazy swirls and the iconic Chocolate Frogs.

Of all that we tried, the Pumpkin Tartlets are deserving of a special mention. The creamy pumpkin filling had the right amount of sweetness that was not cloying on the taste buds and we liked how the layer of chocolate ganache on top adds an extra dimension of flavour.

Besides that, Hagrid’s English Afternoon Tea also includes Green Frog Flexi, which is essentially a thirst quenching green tea drink to complement the food.

TOP UP S$6 FOR HARRY POTTER LATTE OR HOT CHOCOLATE WITH GOLDEN SNITCH

For diners who drop by over the weekends, you get to top up S$6 to upgrade your drink to a hot cup of latte that comes with an intricate Harry Potter latte art.

Otherwise, you can also opt for hot chocolate, which comes with a Golden Stitch on top. Being such hardcore Harry Potter fans, you bet we took a million pictures of the cute drinks!

Situated along Jalan Pinang and taking over the space of the now-defunct Artistry Café is Earlybird Café, a gorgeous bird-themed café which whips up unpretentious dishes as well as a variety of beverages.

Although the area around Jalan Pinang already has plenty of cafés and coffee shops, this brand new addition to Singapore’s local café scene is one you have to add to your bucket list. Here’s what we loved about the place.

Earlybird Café is just a stone’s throw away from Bugis MRT station and it is difficult to miss the brightly-lit ‘earlybird’ signage.

The café is currently still in its soft-launch phase so their food menu is quite limited, although they have a wide range of beverages to offer including coffee by Allpress Espresso, cold-pressed juices, smoothies and milkshakes.

Forget about chicken and waffles, Chicken and Pancakes (S$19) is the way to go when you are at Earlybird Café. It was extremely well-executed and it is a must to order.

The tender and juicy fried chicken was well-coated with a light and crispy batter and we loved how the fried chicken was not overly greasy. What truly impressed us was the stack of house-made buttermilk pancakes that sat beneath the fried chicken; they came with a pleasant melt-on-your-tongue texture. The magic happens when you have the chicken and the pancakes together with the chilli maple sauce.

Featuring 3 huge pieces of fried chicken atop 2 fluffy pancakes, it can be pretty filling if you are a small eater. One thing is for sure—this is one ineffable serving of Chicken and Pancakes we would come back for.

One of the two options that Earlybird Café currently offers for pasta is the Tom Yum Prawn Pasta (S$20), which is essentially linguine tossed in Thai-style tom yum gravy topped with prawns.

We felt that the tomato sauce overpowered the tom yum flavour of the dish.

Earlybird Café also has a range of desserts to love. We opted for the Flower Pot Tiramisu (S$8.50) and it is definitely one dessert that will charm you not just with the looks of it. The smooth cream went well with the sponge fingers and the hint of alcohol gave it a luxurious touch.

Other options for desserts would be Earlybird Café’s rendition of hotcakes, including Hotcake Bling (S$18), Coco Espresso (S$18) and Going Bananas (S$17).

My Melody Café is coming to Singapore really soon and it is going to be at Suntec City! My Melody, commonly known as My Melo, is a white rabbit from the Japanese characterisation company Sanrio. She is a well-loved rabbit and is a good friend of Hello Kitty.

The cafe is going to have a cute indoor al fresco garden setting. You can also look forward to a floral arch, garden-themed mural wall and a cottage house. It will be a dream come true for fans of My Melody.

Situated just a stone’s throw away from the ever-so-popular Blk 85 Fengshan Food Centre at Bedok North is a newly-opened carnival-themed café, Sir Stamford Waffles, which serves waffles, ice cream, coffee and more.

Do not be confused by the name of this café—Sir Stamford Raffles did not open this café—but rather, the people behind Hatter Street Bakehouse and Café did.

Essentially a carnival-themed café, Sir Stamford Waffles is well-furnished and boasts a bright and colourful interior with huge posters with whimsical illustrations on their walls. The space in the café was small and can fit just 4-5 groups of people, but they have seats outside too.

Sir Stamford Waffles bear great similarity to their sister café in terms of their range of desserts and coffee, but with a twist of local flavours, as their name suggests. Specialising in waffles, they offered several noteworthy signature waffle sets such as The Miraculous Merlion (S$15.90) and the Kopi Kusu (S$15.90).

They serve coffee and tea too, perfect for those just looking for something to sip on in Sir Stamford Waffles whilst escaping the glaring heat!

We opted for the Pulau Unikorn Signature Waffle Set (S$14 nett), which came with 2 signature waffles, 1 scoop of Lavender Blackberry Ice Cream, 1 scoop of Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream and of course, unicorn accessories.

As they were out of the Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream on our visit, we opted for the Strawberry Cheesecake flavour instead. Both the lavender blackberry and strawberry cheesecake flavours were delightful to have with the waffles, as they were neither overwhelmingly sweet nor sour.

The waffles were extremely crispy and light, but we would have preferred if the waffles had a more fluffy texture to it. However, the waffles were not too sweet, making it a great complement to the ice cream.

With plenty of cafés serving waffles with ice cream coming forth in Singapore, Sir Stamford Waffles does not stand out in any particular way.

We wouldn’t go all the way to Bedok for Sir Stamford Waffles, but should you be around the east of Singapore and looking for somewhere to curb your waffle and ice cream cravings, you can consider dropping by.

The MINIONS CAFE operated as the “The Despicable Me 3 Cafe” in Japan at five “THE GUEST cafe&diner” outlets located in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo and Fukuoka during July and September this year.

Following the cafe’s theme, guests can expect to be impressed with a myriad of Minion-themed mains, sides, beverages and desserts that make for great photo taking opportunities.

MINION-THEMED FOOD

For instance, you can choose to start your meal with the Minion’s Great Escape Cream Stew (S$20.90)—which looks extremely appealing, with a giant Minion character right in the center of the pan.

The yellow rice is mixed with saffron powder to give it that dark yellow hue and we recommend having it with the savoury cream sauce given at the side to boost the overall flavour. Every order comes with a mini salad drenched in thousand island dressing.

If you are craving for some fried food, pick the Minion Riceball Party (S$21.90)! Kids will love the fun-looking minion rice balls that come with accompanying sides such as crispy french fries and deep-fried tempura.

Alternatively, they also have other minion-themed mains such Minions Vacation Plate (S$23.90) and Pizza Box (S$13.90).

Feeling thirsty? Go for the Up-side-down Minion Jelly Soda Drink (S$12.90), Gru & Lucy “Grucy” Soda (S$8.90) or the Be Bad! Café Latte which can be served either hot (S$8.90) or cold (S$9.50). Although we must say, they really look too adorable for consumption!

MINION-THEMED DESSERTS

Of course, you have to end your meal with yet another Minion-themed dessert—S’more & Minion’s Ice Cream. What you get in this dessert is a scoop of refreshng mango ice cream and perfectly torched marshmellows that melt in your mouth.

As much as we enjoyed it, we had to pair the sweet treat with digestive biscuits to balance the sweetness on our palates.

Other dessert items on their menu include Minion Pudding (S$24.90) and Caramelised Banana (S$16.90).

Visitors can also look forward to exclusive MINIONS CAFE Original Goods which are not available elsewhere at the cafe. Besides that, there will also be other official “Despicable Me 3” merchandise on sale for you to shop to your heart’s content.

EagleWings Loft is a new nautical-themed cafe and bar at the King Albert Park Residences Mall.

This humble week-old establishment by EagleWings—a popular luxury yacht charter in Singapore—features a cosy yet sophisticated ambience that is perfect for a weekend family brunch or any typical work-week meal.

The interior is decked out in nautical-themed decor that gives you a sense of being in the Caribbean. This spacious and luxurious setting features two levels; the first level boasts a cosy cafe-like vibe whereas the second level exudes a more sophisticated restaurant setting.

If there is any way to properly define the cuisine at EagleWings Loft, it is posh Italian coupled with flavourful Asian.

The Truffle flavoured Hook’d On Fries (S$9) comes in a sizeable portion. However, the truffle taste is relatively milder as compared to many other places.

From EagleWings Loft’s brunch menu, try the sweet version of their Port-Side Pancakes (S$10).

Light and fluffy butter pancakes come served with fresh berries and Chantilly cream. Each bite is a mouthful of pure decadence; the fresh berries give the dish a subtle tartness that is sure to perk anyone up and the buttery pancakes were fluffy yet incredibly moist.

For our choice of pasta, we went for the Truffled Blackbeard (S$18). The dish comprises squid ink pasta beautifully tossed together in a truffle-infused mushroom and bacon cream sauce and is served with grilled prawns and crushed walnuts.

We thought that the use of walnuts was a nice touch as it gave the dish a refreshing crunch. The prawns were grilled beautifully giving it a nice, mildly charred taste and the flesh was firm yet tender.

We found the cream sauce a tad bit rich and albeit being a truffle-based sauce, we struggled to detect any trace of truffle. We would have much preferred if the truffle flavour was boosted as it would have added a nice touch of umami to the dish.

All in all, we were truly marvelled by the ambience and the splendid service rendered to us at EagleWings Loft. Although the food itself could afford some room for improvement, we were pretty satisfied with our experience here and we will definitely return to try their other dishes.

As it is the restaurant’s first week of operations, many items on the menu are still unavailable, so unless you plan on having brunch or simply a coffee, we recommend dropping by EagleWings Loft in a week or two once they have gotten a more stable footing.

Cool off from the heat with some Avocado smoothies. Between the two flavours we tried—Matcha Avocado Creme (S$5.50) and Avocado & Chocolate (S$5)—we preferred the latter for its creamy texture and subtle hints of chocolate sauce for extra sweetness.

While the drinks are only decent, it is their desserts which really got us hooked. The Avocado Rhapsody Slice (S$6.50) is made with fresh avocados, cocoa and slathered with rich cream cheese. We could taste all the distinct flavours without the cream cheese overpowering everything else.

Another favourite of ours was the Avocado Gula Melaka Slice (S$5.90). Those with a sweet too tooth will enjoy the addition of sweet Gula Melaka cream on top of moist avocado batter cake.

Avocado Citrus Pie (S$4.50) packs a delightful punch thanks to the generous amount of avocado citrus cream accompanied with hand baked tart crust. We liked how the tart base was buttery and crumbly.

Other choices there include Fresh Avocado Milk Ball (S$2.90), Avocado Yoghurt Deluxe Slice (S$6.30) and Hearty Avocado Granola Bowl (S$9.30).

A slew of eateries—including Lunar Coffee Brewers, 6 Oz Espresso, Venue by Sebastian—has opened at the new Downtown Gallery in the Central Business District.

The newest addition is The Autobus—a bicycle-themed cafe that serves up healthy salad bowls as well as good coffee and tea. This is undoubtedly every bicycle enthusiast’s dream because not only do they sell food here, they also carry a huge range of bicycle equipment and apparel.

This newly-established cafe adopts a DIY food menu in that customers are required to fill up an order form. The current menu only includes rice bowls ranging from S$12 to S$16 with additional charges for premium ingredients. The weekend brunch menu has more options such as Full Breakfast (S$18), Eggs Ben (S$11) and Wagyu Burger (S$24).

We got ourselves two standard S$12 bowls which include, 1 protein, 1 carb, 3 sides and a dressing of choice.

For the first bowl, we got a base carb of quinoa, with the protein being the Grilled Sirloin Steak (+S$2) and topped with the Soy Sesame dressing. Sides consisted of Broccoli, Sweet Corn, and the Spa Egg.

The Grilled Sirloin Steak was cooked medium-rare and was incredibly tender which is perfect for steak fans.

For our second bowl, we went for Penne pasta for our base carb and the BBQ Pulled Pork as the protein. Sides included Bell Peppers, Button Mushrooms, and the Spa Egg, which were all completed with fresh and fragrant Basil Pesto.

The pasta was cooked al dente and the BBQ Pulled Pork was moist and flavourful. We also liked that the peppers were cooked till soft—something which many salad joints tend to neglect.

We must say that we were really impressed by the Chai Latte here. Unlike many other cafes that source their Chai spice mix externally (and in bulk), the baristas at The Autobus actually make it in-house daily!

Each individual Chai spice is toasted in a pan separately to bring out a much deeper aroma. After which, they are all steeped in a pot filled with Ceylon tea and brought to a simmer. The flavours are then allowed to mingle and intensify overnight, only to be served the following day.

Their hot Chai Latte (S$5) is the epitome of a perfect beverage on a rainy day. Spicy, comforting and incredibly aromatic. This is something we definitely recommend.

Overall, we really enjoyed in this huge and cosy space. A conducive working environment with free wi-fi, coupled with the beautiful aromas of freshly heated spices make for a pretty decent work-week afternoon.

Soek Seng 1954 Bicycle Cafe is a hidden cafe that is situated far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The owner is a vintage bike collector who proudly displays his beautiful vintage bicycles all around the cafe. Needless to say, we were all in awe of the cafe’s lovely interior.

Arriving piping hot in a stone bowl, the Katsu Don came with thick slices of juicy chicken slices, savoury egg, sauteed onions and bits of seaweed and carrots on top of warm Japanese rice.

Just like what you would expect from most fish and chips, the Fish & Chips at Soek Seng 1954 Bicycle Cafe had a crispy batter and every order of the Fish & Chips comes with french fries, fresh coleslaw and salad.

Their menu is a combination of local, western and Japanese mains that are mostly below S$20. Other highlights you can go for include the Sirloin Steak, Ayam Panggang and Gyudon.

To be honest, the dishes are not fantastic and we won’t travel all the way here just for the food. However, it is a great place to chill with your friends and enjoy a beer or two. The bicycle cafe also allows dogs at the al fresco area.

Central Perk—F.R.I.E.N.D.S themed cafe—is finally opening in Singapore this weekend.

Located at Central Mall, it will be a 100-seater cafe with floor space of 3,300sq feet. Other than the main set of the café, there is also an extension of a studio set area and outdoor alfresco Streets of New York (recreated indoors).

The F.R.I.E.N.D.S corner will feature character themed wall and iconic themed furniture—Patsy the dog, Pacman machine, Monica Kitchen and Joey Italian Fine craftsmanship cabinet.

Central Perk will be offering a selection of salads, sandwiches, main courses, pasta, pizzas and desserts. Under the mains, there are 6 options which are mostly named after the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. main characters—Janice’s Oh. My. God Baby Back Ribs; Chandler’s Thanksgiving Chicken; Joey’s Fisherman Stew; Phoebe’s I Can’t Eat Meat Steak; Joey’s You’re My Everest Turkey

The cafe is partnering coffee roasters in Singapore to customise 6 different coffee blends profiled to the 6 different F.R.I.E.N.D.S. characters.

Fans of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. will be happy to know that there will be Central Perk merchandises including tumbler, cap, apron, umbrella, mug, and personalised T-shirt.

Central Perk ran into controversy when it announced that it was launching an annual membership programme at S$1,000.

Central Perk SG members enjoy the benefits of priority queue (wow?!); reservations for the “highly anticipated” Central Perk couch; invitations to Central Perk SG events (SO EXCITING!!!); and 6 complimentary cups per day.

Not too sure if this S$1,000 will be worth spending…

Many people slammed the cafe for charging such an exorbitant amount for the membership; it remains to be seen if fans of F.R.I.E.N.D.S would spend so much to be a member (FYI: they sold 97 memberships till date).

Meanwhile, we await the soft launch of the F.R.I.E.N.D.S’ themed cafe this weekend. And we are curious if they are going to get a Gunther-lookalike to serve coffee…

Our island’s first DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe opened its doors to public last year. Elaborately decorated with superhero murals and life-sized figurines, this is the place for all DC superhero fans.

The cafe dishes out desserts and drinks that will remind you of your favourite superheroes such as The Flash and Wonder Woman. Their menu happens to be one of the most expensive among the lot, though.

We are eagerly counting down the number of days before the Gudetama Cafe is set to open in Suntec City Mall. Fans of Sanrio’s lazy egg character must be delighted that the hype has brought the cafe to Singapore’s shores too.

The second edition of Pokémon cafe will be launching in Bugis Junction again! So if you missed it the first time, here is your chance to take photos with Pokémon themed dishes.

One interesting item to look out for on the menu is the Alola Region’s Fish n’ Fries as the ketchup and mayonnaise sauces will form the iconic Pokéball design.
