Duck aficionados, prepare your stomachs because TungLok Group is jazzing up the food scene once again with their new restaurant, Duckland.

Priding themselves on using ducks from Silver Hill Farm in Ireland—a breed that is known to be the ‘wagyu’ of ducks—the Irish duck is no normal duck. It is actually a unique and cultivated hybrid of the Peking duck and the Aylesbury duck, which are poultry specially bred for their dense and porous skin. This means that the ducks used in the dishes here at Duckland will be even more succulent, tender and robust than your average duck.

Adopting a ‘farm to fork’ concept which emphasises heavily on the utilisation of top-notch quality ducks from Ireland, their dishes all embody the authentic flavours of Ireland and the best flavours of duck meat you can get.

Located in United Square at Novena, Duckland has just opened its doors in mid-January. From now until 28th February 2019, our readers can quote ‘ladyironchef’ to enjoy 10% off the total bill with a minimum spend of S$50*. Here is what you can expect at Duckland!

Duckland serves up a pretty impressive range of both Asian and Western-style duck dishes that will raise the bar for duck lovers anywhere else. However, they aren’t just all about ducks. There are other comforting options such as lamb stews and even a whiskey cake that we are totally digging!

ROAST IRISH DUCK

Starting off with their signature dish, the Roast Irish Duck (S$28 for half, S$50 for whole) is definitely the one item you have to order because going to Duckland and not ordering this dish is like going to McDonald’s and not eating fries.

The duck is roasted in a combi-oven, which results in gorgeously amber crisp skin as well as delightfully tender and moist meat.

This duck is the very definition of melt-in-your-mouth; the perfect ratio of flesh to fat allows the duck to maintain its soft succulence, and when paired together with that aromatic skin, you’ll experience a burst of complex umami flavours of epic proportions.

Each serving of their glorious Roast Irish Duck comes with a selection of dipping sauces which include raspberry sauce, calamansi chilli as well as yellow mustard. However, in all honesty, we feel that the natural flavours of the duck are so outstanding by itself that the sauces are unnecessary.

DUCK CONFIT & WAFFLE

Boy, this Duck Confit & Waffle (S$20) has got to be the best rendition in Singapore. To begin with, not many places serve Duck Confit & Waffle, but we now have a place to go to when we need a “ducking good” respite.

Encrusted in a smoky, crisp skin that brims with intense flavours of duck fat, the duck leg was fork-tender with a pleasant bite to it. Executed brilliantly, we adore how Duckland did not incorporate any fancy twists to the dish but instead, brought out the best qualities of the meat through their cooking methods.

Drizzle over the buttery sweet maple syrup at the side to bind the flavours and textures of the waffle, egg and duck leg all together!

DUCK FRIED RICE

The restaurant’s Duck Fried Rice (S$10) is unlike your typical Chinese-style fried rice. Their rendition of such a simple rice dish consists of pieces of Irish roast duck, sweet corn, zucchini and garlic, making it a flavour bomb that bursts with a complex, intense ‘wok hei’ aroma that cloaks every mouthful you take.

What’s worth mentioning is that they enhance the fragrance of their steamed rice with duck fat before stir-frying it, making this dish a notch tastier and aromatic than your average serving of fried rice.

DUCK PIES

On Duckland’s menu, you can find 2 types of duck pies that are perfect for a fuss-free snack or a quick meal on-the-go. The restaurant offers two options, namely the Black Pepper Duck Pie and Tomato-Pineapple Duck Pie (S$6 each).

The former comprises succulent duck meat and onions coated in a black pepper sauce while the latter consists of tangy pineapple, tomato and duck meat encased in a savoury baked puff pastry.

IRISH LAMB STEW

Loaded with a chock full of hearty, healthy ingredients including carrots, potatoes, celery, a myriad of herbs and spices and a generous helping of lamb cooked to tender perfection, their Irish Lamb Stew (S$22) is a showstopper in its own right despite not being a duck dish.

BACON, CABBAGE & COLCANNON

Bacon, colcannon and cabbage is a classic combination commonly found in Irish restaurants. For the uninitiated, colcannon is also known as Irish mashed potatoes and is a traditional Irish dish that incorporates cream, butter and kale into mashed potatoes to give it its creamy texture.

Duckland’s Bacon, Cabbage & Colcannon (S$20) sees slices of smoky old-fashioned bacon—essentially Irish bacon which is leaner as opposed to the fattier American bacon we are used to—atop a generous helping of colcannon, accompanied by cabbage and a creamy parsley sauce.

GOOD OL’ FISH & CHIPS

What we found slightly bewildering was the fact that Duckland, a place that specialises in duck, has one of the best fish and chips (S$18) that we have ever had in Singapore.

Here, fresh barramundi fillets are copiously coated in a thick, fragrant batter and are deep-fried to a lovely golden brown. Cut into it to reveal fresh and flaky barramundi fillets which go hand-in-hand with their house-made Japanese mayo-tartar sauce.

FRESH JUICY OYSTERS

Offering a rotating selection of seasonal oysters, Duckland serves these premium shellfishes in accordance to the season, depending on which is the freshest and best during that particular period.

Slurp up some of these plump, smooth oysters that are freshly-shucked in the restaurant. Imported from various parts of the world, expect meaty Irish oysters or Fine De Claire oysters from France. Prices vary according to its season.

THE SINGAPORE SLAW

This beautifully put together salad (S$15) provides a lovely, refreshing touch to the restaurants otherwise very rich and savoury menu.

The Singapore Slaw is an original Singapore-style salad that was created by International Celebrity Chef Susur Lee, Featuring a colourful mix of fresh herbs and vegetables such as julienned red carrots, daikon, turnip and edible flowers, they are tossed together in a tangy raspberry dressing that serves to pull the entire salad together.

TANTALIZING DESSERTS – WHISKY CAKE & APPLE CRUMBLE

Round off your entire experience at Duckland with a couple of their decadent sweet treats. The Whiskey Cake (S$7) is an indulgent treat that features an aptly dense chocolate cake that comes with a luxurious hint of whiskey.

The Apple Crumble (S$7) is also another delight you mustn’t miss. A medley of soft and crunchy textures is encased in a buttery, crunchy tart exterior, presenting fruity bursts of flavours that comes with strong notes of cinnamon.

Essentially a carnival-themed café, Sir Stamford Waffles is well-furnished and boasts a bright and colourful interior with huge posters with whimsical illustrations on their walls. The space in the café was small and can fit just 4-5 groups of people, but they have seats outside too.

Sir Stamford Waffles bear great similarity to their sister café in terms of their range of desserts and coffee, but with a twist of local flavours, as their name suggests. Specialising in waffles, they offered several noteworthy signature waffle sets such as The Miraculous Merlion (S$15.90) and the Kopi Kusu (S$15.90).

They serve coffee and tea too, perfect for those just looking for something to sip on in Sir Stamford Waffles whilst escaping the glaring heat!

We opted for the Pulau Unikorn Signature Waffle Set (S$14 nett), which came with 2 signature waffles, 1 scoop of Lavender Blackberry Ice Cream, 1 scoop of Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream and of course, unicorn accessories.

As they were out of the Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream on our visit, we opted for the Strawberry Cheesecake flavour instead. Both the lavender blackberry and strawberry cheesecake flavours were delightful to have with the waffles, as they were neither overwhelmingly sweet nor sour.

The waffles were extremely crispy and light, but we would have preferred if the waffles had a more fluffy texture to it. However, the waffles were not too sweet, making it a great complement to the ice cream.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We decided to begin our meal with the Classic Grilled Cheese (S$10.50). A signature Kara cheese blend and zesty sweet pickle relish are sandwiched in sourdough, and this spectacular combination is toasted to caramelised perfection prior to serving.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Remember all those cheese-pull videos? Well, now you can achieve that in real life and this dish sure left us with a cheesy grin.

The Pork Belly Miso (S$16) was an interesting creation that we had to try. Consisting of extremely tender kakuni braised pork belly, soft egg, cucumber edamame salad, miso cream and nori atop well-cooked rice, we particularly enjoyed the topping of ramen crisps as it added a nice, crunchy texture to the dish.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

But for the price point, we did feel that the portion served was not very substantial and this is perhaps something that could be improved for a better dining experience.

We ended our meal with the Matcha Berry Homemade Mochi Waffles with Salted Speculoos Ice Cream (S$12.50).

This was indeed a heavenly pairing and we were very pleased with the elegant presentation of the dish. Furthermore, the dish was oh so tasty and satisfying, which only justified any weight gain.

New kid on the block, CATfeine, is nestled in The Hillford along Jalan Jurong Kechil. Contrary to its name, nothing about the cafe’s interior design reminds you of a cat but the idea is there—a cosy environment coupled with relaxing vibes to encourage their guests to lounge around.

Other than specialty tea and coffee, CATfeine’s also offers sweet and savoury bites in the likes of waffles, pies and cakes.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Sit by the floor-to-ceiling glass window which overlooks the busy main road or find yourself an empty table at the cafe. We liked how the tables are not cramped together, which makes it comfortable to have a private conversation with your dining partner.

If there is a must-try at CATfeine, it has to be their waffles. The beautiful presentation alone is enough to impress us and we are glad to share that the taste did not disappoint either.

Out of the few waffle choices on the menu, we decided to go for their popular Sweet Summer (S$15) which came with orange, grapefruit, fresh berries, rich lavender ice cream and crispy waffles that are made upon order.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We found it rather helpful as it gave us a better understanding of what we were having, allowing us to better appreciate the subtleties in flavours from chocolate sourced from different parts of the world.

The Ice Cream Waffle (S$14) comes with two ice cream flavours of your choice. We went for two different dark chocolate varietals with cocoa percentages from both extremes—the Madagascar Dark Chocolate (64%) and the Venezuela Dark Chocolate (72%).

Both flavours of ice cream were so incredibly decadent and we liked that they were not overly rich and sweet. The Madagascar Dark Chocolate struck a perfect balance between sweet, bitter and chocolatey, whereas the Venezuela Dark Chocolate was just slightly bitter in comparison. It was the best chocolate ice cream we have ever had.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The Premium flavours are each priced at S$5.80 and the Classics at S$4.80 each.

The popsicles are Poppy Pops’ specialty. We got ourselves a Poppy Trio (S$6), Poppy Classic with added on Maple Butter Waffles (S$7.80) and Truffle Fries (S$12).

We were stoked to dig into our Honey Butter Waffles with Lemon Blueberry Poppy topped with Milk Chocolate and Salted Biscuits.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Raspberry ripple flavoured ice cream atop a toasty and crunchy waffle. Perfect for a hot day—or any day for that matter.

The two-piece fried chicken (S$8.50) was beyond amazing. Marinated and deep-fried to perfection, the chicken was super crispy on the outside but moist and succulent on the inside. An added bonus is that it was not the slightest bit oily.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The sides that came along with it were decent but nothing much to shout about.

We also got the Super Value Meal (S$6.80) which consisted of a deep-fried boneless chicken thigh, white rice and a fried egg with a runny yolk. For what it’s worth, we think that it is a pretty good deal considering the large portion size.

The chicken was deep fried to perfection and the egg was cooked just right. However, we wish the rice could have been more aromatic and flavourful to better complement the other two components.

Waffletown was truly a breath of fresh air. A cosy eatery devoid of the hustle and bustle and pretentious aesthetics, serving comfort food at reasonable prices. We will definitely be back.

When prompted about good cafes to visit in Singapore, rarely does a café outside of the East or Central Singapore come to mind; and especially not one from Sembawang.

Common Chefs Café & Bakery is an exception and it will be a good enough reason for you to make a trip down to this Northern part of Singapore.

A café plus bakery, Common Chefs Café & Bakery offers a wide spread of Western dishes, drinks, delightful desserts at affordable prices. Here’s what to expect if you are taking a trip down.

The Single Cheese Burger (S$13 for beef, S$12 for chicken and S$11 for fish) features a juicy single patty packed together with freshly sliced tomatoes, cheddar cheese, mustard, mesclun salad and ketchup in a beautifully buttered brioche bun. All burgers come with fries on the side.

We thoroughly enjoyed the beef patty which was extremely tender and bursting with flavour. For an additional S$1, we upgraded the regular fries to truffle fries. While it was decent, it was not the best truffle fries we’ve tried.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Beyond its lovely presentation, we were impressed with the taste of the waffle as well. While the edges were crispy and break off with a crackle, the waffle interior was soft and warm.

The ice cream flavours we picked were Rocky Road and Honey Lavender. Rocky Road is a rich chocolate flavour which goes extremely well with the Red Velvet Waffle. On the flip side, Honey Lavender is a little too sweet for our liking.

Of course, the best companion to dessert has to be coffee! The cafe’s Hot Cappuccino (S$4.20+) was a delight. We enjoyed the bitter and creamy tones from the espresso and steamed milk.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Since Savoury is a Halal-certified cafe, our Muslim friends can have anything they desire from the menu.

Expect to see a wide variety of options on their menu offering Western delights such as pasta, seafood and meat. Visitors have the option of topping up S$5 to complete their meal with mushroom soup and a drink when they purchase a main course.

PASTA

The Vongole Spaghetti (S$13.80+) is a light, yet flavourful pasta dish that had us digging our forks into it for more. It may look like a simple recipe put together but perfect timing, temperature and an experienced chef makes all the difference. This Italian classic is garnished with garlic chilli, parsley and extremely generous portions of freshly dug clams.

With the truffle trend not dying anytime soon in Singapore, we have been seeing an increase in various types of food choices being paired with it. You can imagine how excited we were when we found out that Savoury has also hopped on the bandwagon too!

For those who prefer something heavier on their taste buds, the Beef Truffle Linguine (S$16.80+) will not disappoint. The aromatic truffle smell hit us before we even took a bite, building up our expectations.

We are glad to say that everything from this dish turned out to be what we had hoped for—mouthwatering slices of beef tenderloin enveloped in rich brown sauce infused with truffle oil.

Other pasta choices on the menu include Black Pepper Chicken Aglio Olio Spaghetti (S$11.80+), Seafood Alfredo Linguine (S$14.80+) and Marina Linguine (S$14.80+).

MEAT AND SEAFOOD

Nothing called out to us more than the Lamb Shank (S$26.80+), looking all glorious while lying on a bed of creamy mash and doused in dark brown sauce.Lamb shanks can be tough if they are not well done but that was not the case at Savoury, for the meat was tender and tasted divine, especially when paired with the sauce. It was a clear winner for us.

Fans of duck confits can look forward to this timeless French classic here at Savoury. The duck leg is fragrant and juicy, hiding underneath a coat of golden brown crispy skin.

This delicious Duck Confit (S$15.80+) sits atop warm buttery mash potatoes and was served with an appetising orange-brown sauce.

The pan-fried Salmon (S$18.80+) had a very crispy skin and we heard a crunch as we dug into it with our knives—an indication of a chef’s expertise at whipping up a well-done salmon.

The Chicken Thigh (S$14.80+) features a pan-fried boneless chicken—tender when served warm to the table, and spiced up significantly with the lemon pesto cream sauce.

DESSERT

No one can say they made a visit to Savoury without ordering their Signature Waffle. You can choose to have one (S$14+) or two (S$18.50+) scoops of their iconic gelato on top of the waffle.

The fluffy waffle is made on the spot and served warm, complete with Chantilly cream, chocolate sauce and various fresh fruits that have been cooked in cinnamon sauce for an extra boost of sweetness!

Apart from the waffle, their dessert menu also encompasses the Mao Shan Wang Lava Cake (S$13.80+), Brownie (S$11.80) and Crème Brûlée (S$11.50+ for one scoop and S$16+ for two scoops of gelato).
