Cafe Gyoen is a new Japanese-themed cafe in Serangoon Gardens with a train decor. Taking over the space vacated by Isshin Machi, Cafe Gyoen will transport you to the Tokyo metro stations and train cabins!

Opened by the same owners behind Yamato Izakaya in Tai Seng, Cafe Gyoen has transformed their toilets into a Tokyo metro cabin-inspired backdrop and it has gone viral online.

But other than that, the interior of the cafe is pretty bare and looks like an ordinary cafe.

Cafe Gyoen serves all-day Teishoku (which means set menu in Japanese), donburi, curry rice and small Japanese bites.

Apart from coffee, you can also get an array of Japanese beverages including Matcha Latte, Black Sesame Latte and matcha Yuzu spritz.

We ordered several dishes and all of them were simple, hearty and delicious. They are something that we can eat on a regular basis.

Each Teishoku set comes with tamagoyaki, cold marinated scallops, onigiri, miso soup and pickles.

Our top picks include the Hokkaido Pork Teishoku, Katsu Pork Teishoku and Tori Teriyaki Donburi.

Cafe Gyoen is a good reason for you to make a trip to Serangoon Garden neighbourhood for brunch the next weekend.

Mention Serangoon Gardens and most people will think of the famous Chomp Chomp Food Centre. However, there is really more to the food scene at Serangoon Gardens than just the famous hawker stalls.

Here is our Serangoon Gardens Food Guide featuring restaurants, cafes, and eateries you have to visit when you are at Serangoon Gardens. P.S. We are working on a separate guide to the hawker stalls at Serangoon Garden and we will be sharing that soon.

One of our favourite cafes in Serangoon, Apollo Coffee Bar in Serangoon Gardens is opened by the same guys behind the popular Atlas Coffeehouse and Columbus Coffee Co. It has already made quite a name for itself with its Mediterranean-inspired brunch creations.

P.S. Apollo Coffee Bar is a dog-friendly cafe; you can also bring your dogs and dine at the outdoor area.

BAKER & COOK / PLANK SOURDOUGH PIZZA

CHONG QING GRILLED FISH

When one mentions kao yu, the first place that instantly comes to most people’s minds is Chong Qing. They are popular for having a large variety of kao yu cooked in different ways, with some of their popular items being their Signature Charcoal-Grilled Fish Hot Pot as well as their Small Golden Snapper in Spicy Fragrant Broth.

Opened by Daniel Ong, Dan’s Steaks is a steakhouse with a slight Korean twang and it will provide free banchan (Korean side dishes) just like the usual Korean restaurants.

Other than large-format steaks, Dan’s Steaks also offers a range of 250g – 350g grass-fed steaks, wagyu steaks, USDA Prime steaks.

And do not miss out on the fantastic side dishes. The creamy and buttery Mashed Potatoes completely stole the show, while we also loved the Cream Spinach with Fried Egg.

HAJIME TONKATSU & RAMEN

Opened by Chef Tan-San—who was previously from Tonkichi and Tampopo—Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen is a casual eatery at myVillage which has authentic tonkatsu and ramen at relatively affordable prices.

Their ramen is decent by most standards, but the real star of the show is their tonkatsu. We love their Premium Pork Loin and at S$22.90, it is better and cheaper than most of the tonkatsu that we’ve had at other tonkatsu places in Singapore.

Choose from five different tea bases: Tieguanyin Oolong Tea, Sun Moon Lake Black Tea, Pekoe Jasmine Green Tea, and Ceylon Highland Black Tea.

Home to an enclave of mouth-watering cafes and restaurants, Serangoon Gardens is a foodie heaven second to none in Singapore. With new eateries popping up here so often, it is undoubtedly the perfect place to bring out the glutton in you!

The Larder Café first started in Toa Payoh in 2016 and they have recently opened another new outlet in Serangoon Gardens, taking over the premise of the now-defunct Arbite which closed down after 9 years.

Boasting a plethora of mains, brunch, big bites and desserts, you can expect to be torn between their delectable options. There’s even alcoholic drinks and a kids’ menu!

To start off our meal, we chose the Cheese Fries (S$8). The basket of straight cut fries came with a side of cheese dip; the fries were nicely fried without it being overly oily. The dip had a light buttery texture with just the right amount of thickness. Together, the pairing tasted sinful.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

#10 MAO SHAN WANG LAVA CAKE

The divine Mao Shan Wang Lava Cake (S$14.80+) is a must-order when at Ice Edge Cafe. And we’ve heard many stories of how people from all over Singapore travel to Kovan for this legendary dessert. It is safe to say the folks at Ice Edge Cafe pioneered the durian lava cake trend.

The King of Fruits has been integrated into a dense lava cake and warm molten durian will ooze out upon forking it. No efforts have been spared in the making of this signature dessert, and the end result is a robust, divine dessert that bursts with aroma. The lava cake comes with a scoop of gelato of your choice.

#11 WAFFLE

Super crisp on the outside and featherlight on the inside, the Waffles here are superb. Choose to top your waffle with one, two, three or four gelato scoop(s). Prices are S$10+, S$14.50+, S$19+ and S$23.50+ respectively.

There are many flavours to choose from for your gelato (which is also what Ice Edge Cafe is well-loved for), and unique flavours include Salted Egg, Japanese Yuzu and Cotton Candy.

#12 BROWNIE WITH GELATO

Like the idea of death by chocolate? Well, then you have to get the warm double chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce. This decadent dessert comes with either one or two scoop(s) of gelato; the former is priced at S$9.80+ whilst the latter would set you back S$14.30+.

And it is important to know that Ice Edge Cafe takes pride in their desserts, and this brownie is baked fresh in-house daily.

#13 CHEESECAKE

We can always do with a good cheesecake, yes? There are three flavours of cheesecakes available on a rotational basis, i.e. Blue Berry, New York and Oreo. Each rich cheesecake costs S$6.80+.

Of course, you need to top it off with a scoop or two of gelato.

From now until 15 December 2016, quote “ladyironchef” to get a FREE Waffle with a scoop of gelato (worth S$10+) when you spend S$20 per table. This offer is valid during dinner daily.

*The 1-for-1 Lunch Promotion is available every day on weekdays (excluding eves of and Public Holiday), and it is redeemable from 11.30am to 3pm. The higher-priced item will be charged. 1-for-1 items can be mixed and matched, and no splitting of bills is allowed.

Serangoon Gardens is one of the oldest estates in Singapore with a history so rich. And it is home to some of the best restaurants and cafes, with household names such as Pow Sing Restaurant & Chomp Chomp Food Centre. But apart from the hoi polloi of barbecue seafood joints, Serangoon Gardens has so much more to offer.

I have been to The Coffee Daily near Serangoon Garden Estate several times in the past few months. It has quite a few good things going for it: the cafe serves a pretty good cup of coffee; the staff are always friendly, genuine and welcoming; it is a cosy place with free wifi to revise for your exams, or to catch up with friends.

On the menu, they have sandwiches, waffles with ice cream, and a selection of desserts like Chocolate Lava Cake and Rainbow Cake. And I also love that they provide complimentary old-school iced gem biscuits – a small gesture that means so much. The Coffee Daily is located slightly out of the way, but it is worth a visit.

It has been a while since my last visit to Relish by Wild Rocket, so I went there for lunch during a weekend, and I am happy to report that their burgers are still very good – Relish remains one of my favourite burger joints in Singapore.

The branch at myVillage at Serangoon Garden has huge glass panels which allow light to shine thorough. It is a comfortable space and I can see myself going back more often. Most of the burgers are priced between $14 – 18, which I have to say is excellent value for the quality.

The Wild Rocket Beef Burger ($14.80) is just as good as I had remember it to be. I love burgers that are highly stacked with lots of ingredients, but sometimes, all we need is a simple and good burger. Which is why I found this burger — a medium-rare beef patty sandwiched between two toasted bun, with arugula, sarawak pepper cream and sun-dried tomato relish — perfect. This is the definition of a good and no-frills burger.

With its delicious char siew soft-bone pork topped with a secret char siew sauce on a homemade foccacia, the BBQ Char Siew Open Pork Burger ($17.50) is also one of my favourites.

Other burgers on the menu include: Blue Cheese & William Pear Beef Burger ($18.50), Chicken Satay Burger ($14.60), Bacon & Cheese Beef Burger ($16.40), and a Soft Shell Chilli Crab Burger ($15.60), which was surprisingly tasty.

If you don’t feel like having burgers, there are several main courses – such as Grilled Pork Chop ($20.90), Spicy Corned Beef Spaghettini ($15.80), Green Curry Seafood Shepherd’s Pie ($17) – on the menu.

Be sure to save room for desserts. I swear by their Strawberry Cheesecake ($9) – Wild Rocket’s signature dessert – a deconstructed cheesecake which is served in a glass. It is so good that I will not go to Relish without ordering it.

The Dark Lava Chocolate Gateau ($12.80) is also worthy of a spot in my list of best chocolate lava cake in Singapore. The pandan-infused Panna Cotta ($8) with gula melaka is also an interesting option.

Like Holland Village, Serangoon Gardens is a popular dining cluster in Singapore. Beyond the many restaurants and cafes there, the estate has two popular Food Centre: Chomp Chomp Hawker Centre and Serangoon Gardens Market & Food Centre.

I brought my overseas friends there and I realised that eating in Hawker Centres can be quite a daunting experience for visitors. It is easy for us as we are familiar with the Hawker Food. But overseas visitors usually do not know what to eat, and which stalls to order from.

If you are bringing overseas visitors to Serangoon Gardens Food Centre, here is a quick guide on what to eat there.

Amongst the stalls in Serangoon Gardens Hawker Centre, Ah Seng Duck Rice and Soon Huat Pig’s Organ Soup have the longest queue. I had them previously, but we did not order them that day. This was our second stop of our food tour, and we did not want to spend too much time queuing up for food.

In any case, there were plenty of stalls to order from. We quickly filled the table with food: Rojak, Chwee Kueh, Popiah, Carrot Cake, Kway Chap, Ice Kachang, Wanton Mee, Oyster Omelette, and Curry Puff.

I think Popiah is a fantastic food. It is the kind of thing you can eat as an appetiser before setting for a heavier “main dish”. Otherwise, it makes a great snack in-between meal times. Popiah is an all-rounder, you can eat them anytime, anyday. The one that we had at Serangoon Gardens Food Centre was probably not the best, but still, it was quite satisfying.

The Fish & Chips stall PX Express (by the Mad Jack Cafe) at Serangoon Gardens Market, serves a competent Fish & Chips, and their cakes are pretty decent too.

Right at one end of Serangoon Gardens Food Centre is the famous Garden Street Kway Chap. This is what I want for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Braised pork, pig’s intestines, braised egg, tau pok, salted vegetables with flat rice noodles – this is unbeatable.

We also ordered Le Le’s Wanton Mee, but I was preoccupied with the Oyster Omelette. If you still have room, get the Curry Puffs from Rolina, and the ham & cheese bread from Serangoon Gardens Bakery & Confectionery.

Trying to decide between Serangoon Gardens Market & Food Centre and Chomp Chomp Hawker Centre? It’s a no brainer. For the best of both worlds, go to the former for breakfast/lunch and the latter for dinner/supper. Perfect.
