Eating out can be all fun and games but there are just those days when our legs just don’t feel like cooperating. All we want to do is just sprawl across our bed and cosy up with our favourite Netflix show.

Well, thank God for food delivery services. Whether you’re getting emotional over Crash Landing On You or at the edge of your seat watching Money Heist, you can always get grub served to you at your doorstep in minutes.

We’ve put together a list of 6 comfort foods to accompany your binge-watching sessions and where you can get them from. Take your pick from chewy Korean noodles to Japanese rice bowls!

#1 BAK KUT TEH

On those rainy days when you just want to snuggle up on the couch and get cosy with a hot bowl of soup, you can’t go wrong with bak kut teh. This comforting dish hits all the right spots with its rich herbal broth and fall-off-the-bone pork ribs.

Plus, delivering this dish to your house allows the ribs to stew a little longer, enriching the broth and tenderising the meat just a tad more.

If you’re craving this heartwarming dish, Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh has got your back. This Johor-based bak kut teh claypot restaurant cooks their soups over a charcoal flame, promising full-bodied herbal flavours.

Maybe you’re watching Jiro Dreams of Sushi and it’s triggering some Japanese food cravings. Whether it’s buttery cubes of sashimi or juicy beef, you’re itching for some Japanese fare. Well, grab your phone and navigate straight to Sora Boru.

#3 FRIED CHICKEN

Crispy, golden and greasy — fried chicken is quite simply, magical. Taking a bite into a crackling, juicy drumstick after a long tiring day is the culinary equivalent of taking a shower on a sweltering afternoon. The best part about having fried chicken at home? You can eat as messily as you want without worrying about looking like a caveman in public.

For a satisfying fried chicken indulgence, look no further than Chir Chir. This chain restaurant does some seriously good Korean fried chicken, with quirky flavours such as mala and cream onion.

#4 GALBI-JJIM

If you’ve never had galbi-jjim before, you’re missing out. This Korean dish sees fall-off-the-bone beef short ribs braised in a rich, savoury sauce. Pairing perfectly with a bowl of steamed rice, this homely dish makes for a wholesome, fuss-free dinner.

And don’t worry, having this as a takeaway will only enhance its flavour as the meat sits longer in the delicious gravy. You can get this Korean classic from Masizzim or Hanok by Masizzim.

Both concepts are centred around delicious, authentic Korean cuisine — think bubbling cauldrons of rich stews and charred, crisp pancakes.

If the Japanese were to share their longevity secrets with us, eating tendon donburi would probably not make it to the list. Anyhow, this sinful treat is to die for.
Bok’s Kitchen is a homey cafe situated along Boon Lay Avenue and it is a new F&B project from the same team behind The Hidden Chefs which specialises in private dining arrangements.

Featuring a progressive menu comprising dishes that are unlike the standard cafe fare, Bok’s Kitchen delights taste buds with primarily local flavours with a mixture of other Asian and Western influences

Diners can expect a variety of mains such as filling rice bowls, breakfast items and sides, as well as a small selection of desserts and drinks. The casual atmosphere at Bok’s Kitchen makes it a great destination for westies to pop by for an affordable fuss-free meal with their family and friends.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The generous pieces of tender char siew came in a glorious shade of red, with charred edges that gave the meat some textural variety. Alongside Papa Bok’s Legendary Char Siew were runny sous vide egg, fragrant Italian spiced rice and some sliced pickles that helped to elevate the natural flavours of the char siew.

Another star dish at Bok’s Kitchen is the Beef Rice Bowl (S$12++) While we love the intense beef flavours of the juicy steak, we felt that it would be better if diners are able to choose their preferred doneness to enhance the entire experience. Similar to other rice bowls, the beef flank steak was accompanied with Italian spiced rice and sous vide egg cooked at precisely 63 degrees Celsius.

On a mission to bring diners the world on a single plate, Coalesce—a new casual family-friendly restaurant nestled on the third floor of NTU Alumni House—serves up cosmopolitan dishes inspired by various international cuisines but with Singaporean cuisine at the heart of each creation.

And for those working in the Buona Vista area, you would be pleased to know that Coalesce has a S$8.80++ Weekday Power Lunch set which comes with a soup of a day, main course and a drink.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins><ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins><ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins>

Well, did it work? Although the pasta was tasty, we felt that it lacked the rich and aromatic prawn flavours that we would usually identify with Belacan. Otherwise, we were served a good portion of pasta and seafood—albeit only squid and prawns—which justified the S$8.80++ price tag.

The other dish that we tried was the Roasted Pork Belly Rice Bowl with Ajitsuke Egg (S$10.80++). We liked that Coalesce kept the presentation simple yet elegant but were slightly disappointed with the execution of the roasted pork belly. Aside from having a crispy skin, the pork belly pieces were tough and were not seasoned sufficiently. We also felt that the Ajitsuke Egg and rice left much to be desired.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block; text-align: center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="3885138539"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The dory was soft and flavourful, and the brown rice was given an extra flavour boost thanks to the parmesan cheese and the runny yolk of the onsen egg. Separately, the ingredients may not have worked but the garlic soy dressing really did well to bring the entire dish together.

The second bowl we got started off with a bed of mixed baby spinach and rocket (+S$1) and a marinated chicken breast as our protein of choice. Our sides comprised broccoli, roasted pumpkin and shimeiji mushrooms which were beautifully topped with furikake and a sesame wafu dressing.

Despite being cooked sous vide, the chicken itself was rather dry. The other vegetable items were decent but special mention has to be made about the roasted pumpkin. Roasted till soft, the pumpkin was incredibly sweet and delicious.

Nestled within the Sembawang Hills Estate neighbourhood, and the newest addition to the Upper Thomson enclave is Thus Coffee, a chic cafe that offers stellar grain bowls, pasta, brunch, hearty stews and coffee

Not only that, coffee aficionados can take pleasure in knowing that their coffee beans are freshly roasted in-house—something often overlooked at many cafes in Singapore.

Whether its superb coffee, a stellar array of brunch-style eats or simply just a place to escape the midday heat, the newly opened Thus Coffee at Upper Thomson is no doubt a worthwhile spot to check out should you happen to find yourself wandering around the area.

Decked out in weathered grey walls and simple furniture, this humble coffee joint exudes a rather relaxed and laid-back vibe that is just perfect for lounging or catching up on work. There is also a communal dining table that caters for larger groups.

Their food offerings typically revolve around your usual cafe fare with the exception of their Hearty Chicken Stew and Wagyu Beef Grain Bowl. Besides the usual coffee, tea and fresh fruit juice selection, Thus coffee also serves Argentian wine at only S$40 a bottle.

The Hearty Chicken Stew (S$16) starts off with a standard mirepoix—basically, a fancy French term to mean carrots, onions and celery—which gives the stew its savoury and mildly sweet base and is thickened with cream for that hearty quality. Tender, herbed potatoes are also added to give the dish texture and a heightened boost of flavour.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The tender and succulent chicken comes with toasted multigrain bread and a wedge of lime—which we thought was a wonderful touch to the dish as the sharp tang really helped to cut through the richness of the stew.

Humbly roasted in-house by the good folks at Thus Coffee, the standard Latte (S$5) went well above your usual cuppa. The initial whiff boasted deep, chocolatey notes while the first sip was earthy and crisp.

We may not be coffee experts, but we know a decent cuppa when we’ve had one—and this was definitely one of them.

We are seeing a rapid growth in F&B establishments that are experimenting with mod-sin cuisine. Known as ‘Modern Singaporean’ cuisine, this cooking style takes on an innovative approach with local dishes and it requires plenty of time for research and development in order to get the recipes right.

Jiakpalang Eating House is an up-and-coming casual restaurant along Alexandra Road that offers local Zi Char dishes with a twist. Driven by his passion for food and cooking, the restaurant’s executive chef Nixon Low gained some experience assisting in the kitchen before starting his own business.

Some of the interesting dishes you can expect at Jiakpalang Eating House are Charcoal Katarosu Pork Collar slathered with Kopi “C” sauce, Cereal Pan Seared Foie Gras and “Assam” Pulau Ubin Sea Bass. If you are getting tired of the usual Zi Char dishes, why not give this place a try?

Santap is a new muslim-owned cafe in Little India by the good folks from The Black Hole Group—who is behind Working Title and The Mad Sailors.

Santap, which means to eat luxuriously in Malay, offers a menu of healthy eats from sandwiches to stellar rice bowls. All of which are plated so beautifully that it would be a crime not to snap a shot of it for the ‘gram’.

Nestled within the newly opened boutique hotel, The Daulat—just a 5-minute walk from Rochor MRT station—this Muslim-owned cafe exudes a charming ambience and a cosy vibe that is just perfect for lounging about in the afternoon.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

With both an indoor and al fresco space that is cool and cosy, Santap is a great spot for lounging or dining at any time of the day. Where space is concerned, the indoor space features only one communal dining table and although beautifully decorated, may not be ideal for big groups.

The al fresco area, on the other hand, is considerably more spacious and the breeze coupled with the easy listening tunes make it a great spot to chill at.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The beef had a mild hickory smoke flavour to it, which went surprisingly well with their housemade Tonkatsu sauce, and the various veggie elements provided many different tastes and textures to brighten the entire dish up.

All in all, this dish makes for a pretty substantial (and healthy) meal that will have you feeling full yet incredibly pleased with yourself.

Every lunch set comes with a complimentary cold brew tea, and boy oh boy is it the perfect thing to have on a scorching afternoon.

We were really impressed that the baristas here use better quality tea and actually take the time and effort to garnish the drink properly, especially for something that’s complimentary.
