Fook Lam Moon’s primary clientele comprises the rich and famous in Hong Kong—dining at this 1-Michelin Starred restaurant is a bragging right on its own.

While you can most definitely expect only the best ingredients to go into the dim sum, the high price tag is not for all to digest. While the place may appear slightly snobbish, there is a reason why the restaurant is ever popular among the socialites over the weekends. And yes, their dim sum is pretty elegant.

FU SING SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

Fu Sing Seafood Restaurant is not at all pretentious and their traditional outlook is one reason why it makes the dining experience all the more authentic. They may be known for their shark’s fin but we would go for their dim sum any day.

Filled with the sweetest char siew fillings in an airily soft bun, Fu Sing’s Baked BBQ Pork Buns are the best that we’ve had in Hong Kong—that pillowy bun came with a full centre of char siew fillings and a crusty pineapple-shaped top. Other than that, the Steamed Rice Rolls with Dough Stick and Carrot Cake are excellent choices too.

JADE GARDEN

Founded by leading F&B organisation Maxim’s Group, Jade Garden is a dim sum chain that is popular among families for their wide range of dim sum options and classic Cantonese dishes.

KING’S DIM SUM

The best part about dim sum is that it can be enjoyed at any time of the day—whether its breakfast, tea or even supper. King’s Dim Sum is a hole-in-the-wall dim sum eatery in Causeway Bay which serves dim sum from 7am to 11.30pm.

Prices are considered reasonable here and the eatery even has a translated menu in English so tourists do not have to be shy about ordering. Although not as famous as the other big names, King’s Dim Sum is still an underrated place worth checking out.

LEI GARDEN

Established in 1973, Lei Garden is a very successful international dim sum brand that originally started off as a traditional Cantonese-style restaurant. The 1-Michelin Starred restaurant now has 24 branches in neighbouring countries such as Singapore and China too.

The food is consistently remarkable and always reliable no matter which branch you go to or when you visit. Among what we ordered, their Steamed Custard Stuffed Buns, with its molten centre, left a deep impression on our minds. Other notable items on the menu are the Pan-fried Pork Dumpling topped with rice nest and Deep-fried Taro Dumplings.

LIN HEUNG TEA HOUSE

Having been around for decades, Lin Heung Tea House is one of the oldest teahouses in Hong Kong—that will remind you of old Hong Kong in the 60s and 70s—and it is conveniently located at the bustling Wellington Street.

Do not be surprised if you are put on the waiting list as the restaurant sees a snaking line in the mornings which mostly consists of loyal patrons who make it a point to head back time and again for their dim sum which is served on trolleys by waitstaff who has been working there for decades.

LUK YU TEA HOUSE

An institution that has been around long enough to be labelled as an icon in the Hong Kong dining scene, Luk Yu Tea House is very traditional and its setup is akin to what you see in Hong Kong dramas—complete with ancient touches of jades and marbles, sans the gangsters, of course.

Prices may not be the most affordable on the list and there is no good service to speak of here too but this is one place to check out for an authentic dim sum experience when you are in Hong Kong.

Diners will find the usual dim sum staples such as Egg Tarts, Har Gau and pau with various fillings on the menu.

Year after year, Hong Kong’s Mei-Xin Mooncakes impress with the most authentic tastes of Mid-Autumn Festival coupled with innovative new flavours such as lava custard and lava chocolate flavours which performed exceptionally well in recent years.

This year, they aim to do no different with their traditional varieties, snow skin collection, the ever-popular lava custard mooncakes and even a superhero-themed mooncake collection featuring iconic Marvel characters Iron Man and Spider-Man.

Their mooncakes are crafted intricately, encompassing both time-honoured recipes and passion to create stunning confectioneries for families from all over to enjoy, which is no surprise why they are the best-selling mooncake brand in Hong Kong for 19 consecutive years.

Innovative new flavours may intrigue the senses, but nothing is quite as comforting as a slice of tradition.

Mei-Xin’s White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with 2 Egg Yolks and Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with 2 Egg Yolks are the most popular from their traditional collection. Both are epic masterpieces comprising smooth lotus seed paste and rich, bright salted egg yolks that ooze with savouriness.

Mei-Xin also has a low sugar series of mooncakes for those who are health conscious. It retains the natural taste of mooncakes and you will be happy to know that it is practically sugar free.

In recent years, the Lava Custard Mooncakes have successfully won the hearts of mooncake lovers and the rate at which they were sold out is a testament to its taste.

This year, Mei-Xin Mooncakes launches the Lava Egg Yolk with White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake. In addition, their new Delicate Trio Mooncake offers you an assortment of Lava Custard Mooncake, Egg Custard Mooncake and Lava Egg Yolk with White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake—something to entice all salted egg yolk fans out there.

For the kids, consider their new line of superhero-themed gift boxes and mooncakes featuring iconic characters such as Iron Man and Spider-Man.

The Spider-Man Egg Custard Mooncake gift box is designed with the iconic head portrait of Spider-Man in navy blue. Each box contains 4 Egg Custard Mooncakes bearing his iconic hand gesture.

On the other hand, Iron Man shows up on the Iron Man Green Tea & Red Bean Mooncake gift box. It is embossed with Iron Man’s helmet and his gift box contains 4 Green Tea & Red Bean Mooncakes stamped with the crest of the Avengers—any comic book lover would want to add these 2 gift boxes to their collection for sure!

Mei-Xin Mooncakes have been honoured with a number of world-class awards for its magnificent mooncakes—namely their signature products of Traditional Mooncakes, Snowy Mooncakes, and Lava and Custard Mooncakes.

If authentic and high-quality mooncakes are what you are after, there is no reason why Mei-Xin Mooncakes should not be at the top of your wishlist this year. It is our favourite every single year.

You might have heard about our love for Hong Kong umpteen times – we still do, but today, we want to share some dining highlights from a recent trip because there are many reasons to love dining at Central, really!

We all have different objectives when we travel – some like to just stuff their faces silly with all the good food, some like to experience the local culture so that they have memories to keep in their hearts for always, some like to explore the famous attractions and sites. But because we always prioritise eating (greedy like that), our tummies are ever ready to be surprised, ever game to dine at non-touristy places, ever excited to explore all the food awaiting us.

Central is a bustling area in Hong Kong, and while it may be the CBD of Hong Kong, it actually has many dining options to offer.

From a very gorgeous cafe that is filled with natural sunlight, to what is probably the sexiest Japanese restaurant in Central, and a brilliant bakery that bakes the most creative croissants; here are 7 Restaurants in Central Hong Kong To Fall In Love With.

#1 CAFE LANDMARK

It is impossible to miss this grand restaurant that sits within Landmark shopping mall. The crowd that patronizes Cafe Landmark is a chic one; an evident favourite among stylish executives in the area, as well as shoppers who need a resting stop in between their retail therapy, Cafe Landmark is easy to fall in love with.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

An open space with an effortless grace and grandeur, the restaurant has an international menu with Asian influences. The patisserie is an artisanal one, with delicate bakes and creations that are both feasts for the eyes and soul.

#2 GOGYO

Founded by the same owner of Ippudo Ramen, GOGYO is a modern and chic Japanese ramen bar that is quite unlike the usual traditional ramen shops. The idea at GOGYO is the start with drinks; why not, right? There is a comprehensive range of Japanese craft beers, shochu, and cocktails. Then, proceed with snacks, or what we’d like to think of as Japanese bar grub. A hearty bowl of ramen shall be your main, and that is the way we roll at GOGYO.

GOGYO has five ramen options on the menu, but the one to turn your attention to is the famous Kogashi (burnt) Miso Ramen – the broth is charred with large flames, giving the ramen a sensational smoky flavour. Expect a slightly thicker broth, and more robust taste; if you are not a fan of rich flavours, this might not be for you, though.

Fancy a lunch set? They’ve got one that is pretty value-for-money. For HK$188, the Eel Hitsumabushi Rice Bowl Set comprises a unajyu, vegetable tempura and a side salad. The seating capacity at GOGYO is relatively small, but there is a reason why so many are willing to wait patiently for a seat. You shall know why too when it is your turn.

#3 KIKUSAN

Kikusan is our newfound favourite restaurant in Hong Kong when we need our Japanese food fix without breaking the bank. It is also possibly the sexiest Japanese casual dining outlet in Central, one that we cannot ever get sick of. The prices are unbelievably affordable, and if we were citizens of Hong Kong and working in Central, you would see us there very often with our Kikusan Roll.

Yes, the Kikusan Roll (HK$68), a maki roll with gorgeous chunks of uni (sea urchin), shrimp and minced fatty tuna. You read that right – all these premium ingredients packed in a neat maki roll for just HK$68! Can you believe it?!

Kikusan also has a selection of Japas (their version of Japanese tapas). It might sound bizarre, but we actually love the Kimuchi (HK$28) the best. It is essentially ‘kimchi’, but Kikusan prepares their own with homemade Japanese chilli. Other noteworthy dishes include the comforting Fried Okinawa Bitter Melon & Pork (HK$58) which reminded us of a taste of home, and the Assorted Sashimi with Rice (HK$138) which is otherwise known as ‘chirashi-don’.

Of course, the ones who are always in a hurry are not forgotten. You still deserve some nice bites in between meetings. Grab some fresh bakes from Maxim’s Cakes to keep you company while you clock your meetings in the day. Maxim’s Cakes is an all-time favourite place to stop by whenever we need to pick up a bread roll or two, and they are conveniently located EVERYWHERE in Hong Kong – and we really mean everywhere.

The outlet in Central is strategically located on Pedder Street, just right outside the MTR station. We often find ourselves drawn to the shop by the aroma of fresh bread and cakes. There will definitely be something for everyone – savoury and sweet breads, cake slices, biscuits and even mooncakes now that it is Mid-autumn festival.

This Mid-autumn festival, look forward to the Mei-Xin Lava Custard Mooncakes which has liu sha that actually flows from the mooncake center. What socery, right? Another creation that you can look forward to is the special Tsum Tsum edition mooncakes. The cute packaging will definitely delight every fan. But you may stick to the classics if you’d like – the Mei-Xin White Lotus Seed Paste with Egg Yolk will be just right for you.

#5 PEKING GARDEN RESTAURANT

Established in 1978, Peking Garden Restaurant is known for its authentic Peking Cuisine and it is listed in the Michelin Restaurant Guide from 2013 to 2015. Whether it is a place for family dinners, or for a corporate meal, Peking Garden Restaurant is a notable choice.

While Peking Garden Restaurant has several outlets in Hong Kong, we like the branch at Alexandra House as it exudes ancient beauty with hints of gold and red.

Famed for their Barbecued Peking Duck (well, you saw that coming from their name right?), we savoured the prized crispy skin that came with a hint of smoky applewood taste.

simplylife is a European-style bakery cafe, and it is one that had us falling in love with over and over again. In a busy city where people are always racing against time and missing out on the smallest things, simplylife is an oasis of calmness in Hong Kong, and quite simply what life should be.

There are several outlets across Hong Kong, and the one that sits at Landmark is convenient and very accessible. Well-loved by the executives working in the area, simplylife is a haven of fashionable European bakes.

Awake your senses and be greeted by the scent of fresh bakes every morning. simplylife’s range of breads and cakes is a sight to behold. Prices here are exceptionally reasonable, by the way.

It is no secret that our loyalty is sold to URBAN Bakery Works. Its concept shop at The Landmark is a stunner, and it promises nothing but a hip and fun experience. We are crazy about their croissants. If you haven’t tried, you must not miss the world for this – because these people are really game to outdo the Parisians with their croissants.

While you may be mind-blown by the sheer number of fancy croissants available, the highlight has got to be the Ball Law Cowssant – a hybrid of croissant and po luo bao (pineapple bun) complete with a slab of French butter, the Ball Law Cowssant (Dare devil version) totally blew us away, and we will go so far as to say that it is a must-eat in Hong Kong.

Other croissant flavours that captured our hearts were the Crunchy Peanut Butter that is lavishly filled with chunky spread, and the Lava Custard Croissant – if you think “liu sha bao” is divine, wait till you try this! That’s not all. The chic bakery cafe also serves excellent Vittoria coffee, a variety of salad and sandwiches which are perfect for a light and casual meal, as well as an array of decadent cakes and pastries.

Dim Sum is a ritual in Hong Kong. It is a lifestyle, it is a past-time, it is quintessentially Hong Kong.

Many cultures have something similar like the Spanish tapas, the Italian cicheti and the Japanese izakaya, but dim sum is somewhat on a different level, very gastronomical and exquisite, and is truly special especially to us Asians.

From traditional dim sum teahouses, to the cheapest Michelin Starred dim sum restaurants, and very posh Chinese restaurants that offer an exquisite dining experience like no other – there are countless of dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong, and while the choices are mind-boggling to say the least, we have shortlisted our favourites to share with all of you.

Here is our guide to Hong Kong’s 15 Dim Sum Restaurants You Must Dine At.

A place that serves affordable and creative dim sum is Dim Dim Sum, which has several outlets – Mong Kok, Sha Tin, Wan Chai and Jordan.

Besides the usual suspects like Har Gau (HK$28) and Siew Mai (HK$21), Dim Dim Sum also has a variety of interesting creations with a twist such as Pineapple Bun with custard and pineapple fillings (HK$19), Stuffed Eggplant (HK$21) with teriyaki sauce, and Pan-fried Lotus Root Cakes (HK$24).

Awarded with two stars in Michelin Guide Hong Kong 2015, Duddell’s at Central is one of the bests that we’ve dined at. It boasts an elegant ambiance with fine dim sum and Cantonese soups, and has a rooftop bar.

Good for lunch meetings, even better for unwinding after work if you need a drink or two. Duddell’s adds a touch of sexiness to the humdrum of the business district.

#4 FOOK LAM MOON

Frequented by the rich and famous personalities in Hong Kong, Fook Lam Moon is a 1-Michelin Starred restaurant that is renowned for its haute Cantonese cuisine. Dining here is not cheap at all; prices of dim sum range from HK$60 to HK$70.

While the items are all prepared with premium ingredients, the price tag is not for all to digest. The vibe can be a little pretentious too, but there is a reason why the high societies love it so much and why the place is always packed on weekends. Their dim sum is indeed pretty elegant.

#5 FU SING SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

Dim sum lovers, all hail Fu Sing Seafood Restaurant. The whole outlet looks traditional, but that is what makes them such an atmospheric spot for a dim sum meal. They are widely known for their shark’s fins, but we would take the dim sum any time.

Filled with the sweetest char siew fillings in a airily soft bun, Fu Sing’s Baked BBQ Pork Buns (HK$38) are the best that we’ve had in Hong Kong. We can never forget that pillowy bun that came with a full center of char siew fillings and a crusty pineapple-shaped top. Other than that, the Steamed Rice Rolls with Dough Stick (HK$48) and Steamed Shrimp Dumplings (HK$38) are really satisfying too.

#6 LEI GARDEN

The most consistent Michelin Star Restaurant for dim sum? Lei Garden wins the award hands down.

Lei Garden is known for its weekend dim sum crowds, and it is little wonder given the quality of their dim sum. The food is consistently remarkable and always reliable no matter which branch you go to or when you visit. The Steamed Thousand Layers Sponge Cake (HK$32) was really soft and sweet, and the Steamed Custard Stuffed Buns (HK$32) with a flowy center left a deep impression on us.

An institution in Hong Kong, Lin Heung Teahouse has been around for decades and it is one of the oldest teahouses in Hong Kong.
Lin Heung Teahouse is as old-school as it gets; dim sum is served using trolleys the traditional way, and most of the staff have worked there for decades. If you get there early enough in the morning, you will find yourself among locals who have been dining there for many years.

The staff here tend to be ruder – especially to foreigners who cannot speak Cantonese – but that’s just part of the Hong Kong’s traditional dining culture, no?

Dining at Luk Yu Tea House – also one of the oldest dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong – is as though you were transported back in time to the 60′s. Very traditional with ancient touches of jades and marbles, Luk Yu Tea House actually looks and feels like a movie set. But we really love how atmospheric it is this way, less the gangsters, of course. Yes, it used to be a haunt for the biggest gangsters in town. Such history to speak of!

Prices are not cheap, but what you are paying for is the experience of dining at a traditional teahouse with authentic Hong Kong dim sum. Service is bad too – be prepared to face rude and nonchalant servers. If you are willing to overlook these, Luk Yu is still worth a visit for those who have never been.
Tim Ho Wan shot to fame being the original poster boy as the cheapest One-Michelin Starred Dim Sum Restaurant. Within a few years, its dim sum empire has expanded to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Sydney.

We used to be big fans of Tim Ho Wan as it was really good and cheap. But prices have gone up significantly and the standard is no longer as good as before. That said, if you have never tried Tim Ho Wan before and do not mind to wait in line, it is still worth a visit. Tim Ho Wan may no longer be the cheapest dim sum restaurant in Hong Kong, but it still has several things going for it.
A trip to Hong Kong is not complete without having a dim sum meal or two. Or as many as you can. There are countless dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong, and while the choices are mind-boggling to say the least, we love Maxim’s Palace for they offer the most quintessential Hong Kong dim sum experience.
Here are 5 reasons why Maxim’s Palace is our favourite dim sum restaurant in Hong Kong and why you should go there for yum cha when in the city.

DIM SUM SERVED ON TROLLEYS THE TRADITIONAL WAY

Maxim’s Palace is one of the few places that serves dim sum the traditional way. It is a better experience when you have Hong Kong ladies pushing plates of dim sum around in old school trolleys and you pick your favourites from the endless selection. They are all fresh from the oven, served hot and most delicious.

OVER 100 DIM SUM AND SIGNATURE DISHES TO CHOOSE FROM

At Maxim’s Palace, there are a hundred varieties of dim sum and signature dishes that are all prepared fresh from the kitchen daily. No matter how many times you go back, there is always something familiar to pick from among your favourite dishes, as well as something new to try. Ask the ladies for recommendations for daily specials and new items. Or if it is your first visit, have them tell you what is most popular and what you must not miss out on. The interaction adds on to the overall experience, and we are certain you will have a very pleasant meal.

Har gau, siew mai, Ma Lei Gao, Egg Tarts, Baked Barbecued Pork Pastry, Steamed Bean Curd Stuffed with Shrimp Paste, Deep-fried Spring Roll, Pork Spare Ribs in Black Bean Sauce… Wash everything down with a pot of fragrant Jasmine tea, or Pu-er – if you prefer something stronger.

DELIVERING ONLY THE FINEST CANTON-STYLE COOKING

Maxim’s Palace is extremely popular for its dim sum during lunch – there is a perpetual long queue, especially on weekends – and this further reiterates their standard and quality. Apart from the usual suspects like har gau, siew mai and chee cheong fun, you can also find mouth-watering and refined Cantonese fare that is prepared with a sheer passion for Canton-style cooking. Its signature dishes include Deep-fried Prawns with Mango Salad Dressing, Deep-fried Sliced Garoupa with Sweet Corn Sauce,

The series of accolades that Maxim’s Palace has accumulated over the years is the best testament to their consistency in delivering only the finest Canton-style cooking.

FLAGSHIP OUTLET AT CITY HALL WITH A STRATEGIC LOCATION

While Maxim’s Palace has 9 branches in Hong Kong, foodies-in-the-know all flock to its flagship outlet at City Hall which is just a short walk from IFC. It makes the perfect place to host your overseas business associates, to bond over team lunch, or to simply steal a breather from work over a hearty dim sum feast.

The posh interior with a high ceiling, coupled with a view of the Harbour, completes the impeccable experience at Maxim’s Palace City Hall.

THE QUINTESSENTIAL HONG KONG DIM SUM EXPERIENCE

The main reason why we love Maxim’s Palace is because of the aforementioned quintessential Hong Kong dim sum experience.

Maxim’s Palace City Hall can accommodate 500 guests at one go. It is massive and it is noisy. But that is how it should be like – everyone cozying up in the dining hall that is brightly lit with crystal chandeliers and Cantonese songs on loop. There will be 18 trolleys – filled with all the classic dim sum items – going around the dining hall, and you pick what you like.

Among all the different dining concepts that we went to during our Hong Kong trip in July, simplylife – a European-style bakery cafe by Maxim’s Group - is our favourite place.

In a busy city where people are always racing against time and missing out on the smallest things, simplylife is an oasis of calmness in Hong Kong, and quite simply what life should be. We fell in love with it, more than what we thought we would. The space is one that will have you slow down, relax and breathe in the simple pleasures of life. simplylife, indeed.

Since its opening in 2007, simplylife has not only expanded to 8 branches in Hong Kong, but it has also garnered a strong support among its loyal customers. Nothing is unnecessarily expensive, and only the freshest ingredients are used for every item they serve and put on your table.

We can go on and on about why we are head over heels in love with the concept, but the best way is for you to include it in your itinerary when you are in Hong Kong. Here is how simplylife stole our hearts:

Beyond the charming European-style decor, aroma of freshly brewed coffee in the cafe, and an amazing display of breads, cakes and pastries, simplylife offers absolute comfort. For locals who are dashing off to work, comfort is having freshly baked bread and pastries to start the day right. For those who are in need of a caffeine boost, comfort comes in the form of a cappuccino, while you nibble on a chocolate croissant, a blueberry danish, or a mixed berry tart.

For those who are famished and seek something more substantial, comfort means fresh salads and homemade pastas, or the many other savoury simplylife’s main courses, especially the signature Angus beef burger.

Interaction with the chefs and servers is encouraged, and the open kitchen concept is quite a show to boast. Patrons can take a few minutes to watch the creaming of a cake, or the cutting of fresh homemade pasta. The display of fresh bakes is so seductive that breakfast has never been better; and it is impossible to order only one.

The food at simplylife is the kind of stuff that you can eat every day and not get bored of. It is the type that you will crave when you want comfort food for the soul. Everything here is of premium quality, and no additives are added.

Think Crabmeat and Mixed Salad with Peanut Sesame Dressing and the classic English Big Breakfast as the first meals of your day; a whole series of Organic Brown Rice with power ingredients, and handmade Tagliatelle or Linguine in your favourite sauces like Truffle Cream Sauce and Spicy Tomato sauce.

At the desserts galore, it is a whole new world. We do not even know where to begin from, but to give you an idea, the endless options include Rose Yogurt Pear Mousse Cake, Chocolate Espresso Chestnut Mousse Cake, Mixed Berry Tart, all kinds of danishes that you can ever imagine… and by now, you really should be hungry.

And of course, it helps that the chefs are constantly putting on their thinking caps to come up with new creations so that even regulars will always something new to try.

Prices are exceptionally reasonable for the quality of food. The dinner menu is divided into Salad (HK$118 – HK$138), Meat (HK$118 – HK$208), Rice & Handmade Pasta (HK$98 – HK$148), and Pizza (HK$118). simplylife also has an impressive array of breads, pastries and cakes that are freshly baked every morning. The selection changes from time to time, but you will always be spoiled with choices from the 9 tarts, 8 whole cakes, 4 whole roll cakes, 6 danishes, croissants, baguettes and more.

“Less is more at simplylife” – its mantra describes exactly what the cafe is about. It aims to do fewer things well by using the freshest ingredients and a simple yet unique style of cooking.

As mentioned earlier, there are 8 branches in Hong Kong, but we will suggest going to the biggest restaurant at Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong. It has both indoor and “outdoor” seated – both are still within the mall that is fully air-conditioned, but the latter is a simulation of a European outdoor verandah, with natural sunlight streaming in and warming your souls as you sink in to your chair and relax over a cuppa and a slice of cake.

simplylife has great potential and we really hope to see it opening in more cities in Asia. The concept is simple and endearing, and somewhere you will go to no matter how you are feeling – to treat yourself to a good meal without bursting the budget, and to embrace life.

Sexy. Artsy. Fuss-free. Comfort. URBAN Bakery Works presents itself as the it place in Hong Kong for all-day casual dining. Its concept shop at The Landmark is a stunner, and it promises nothing but a hip and fun experience. While there are many things that we love at URBAN Bakery Works, the highlight has got to be the Ball Law Cowssant. It totally blew us away. We will go so far as to say that it is a must-eat in Hong Kong.

A hybrid of croissant and po luo bao (pineapple bun) complete with a slab of French butter, the Ball Law Cowssant (Dare devil version) is nothing but sheer indulgence. If you love po luo bao, you will fall in love uncontrollably with URBAN Bakery Works’ divine creation!

Besides the Ball Law Cowssant, URBAN Bakery Works offers croissants (made with French A.O.C butter) in seven different flavours – like almond, Belgian chocolate, cheddar cheese, and brulee. The croissants that we’ve sampled are so well made that they are just as good, if not even better than the ones that we had in Paris.

That’s not all. The chic bakery cafe also serves excellent Vittoria coffee, a variety of salad and sandwiches which are perfect for a light and casual meal, as well as an array of decadent cakes and pastries. Our favourite is the What The Fudge – a luscious chocolate fudge cake that is enveloped with what seemed like a whole factory of kitkat and M&M’s. And this is what we call super photogenic and Instagram-worthy. Non-chocolate lovers might just be besotted, too!

We like that URBAN Bakery Works never rests on its laurels and is constantly coming up with new creations. Kiss My Butterfly is its latest invention. The classic Mille-feuille is given a modern twist by using caramelised palmiers layer with season fruits and custard fillings. Just the thought of it is enough to make us salivate. We cannot wait to try it the next time we are in Hong Kong!

For the latest updates, go to www.maxims.com.hk, and like Maxim’s Group on Facebook.

We are always excited to receive mooncakes, but this year had us appreciating them way more, for we went on a very special and exclusive tour that heightened our admiration for the Chinese treasure. It is not every day that you get to visit a mooncake factory, so we were more than thrilled when we had the opportunity to visit Maxim’s factory to learn more about the production of their world class mooncakes.

From the meticulous procedures to ensure that the mooncakes are produced in a safe and clean environment to seeing and tasting the quality ingredients that go inside each mooncake, smelling the strong lotus paste upon stepping in the production room, witnessing the number of staff at their respective stations, and the intricate packaging process, it was such an eye-opening experience and insightful visit to witness the making of those famous Maxim’s mooncakes (known as Mei-Xin Mooncakes outside Hong Kong).

We will take you through on a behind-the-scenes journey of Maxim’s Mooncakes Factory, and how their award-winning mooncakes are being produced. And of course, no Mid-autumn festival is complete without a box or two of them.

SAFETY MEASUREMENTS AND PROCEDURES TO ENSURE A CLEAN AND SAFE PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT

It is a very thorough process, but that only means every Maxim’s mooncake is clean and safe for consumption. Every person who enters the plant has to be clothed in hygiene wear – caps to hold every strand of hair, full-length robes and gloves, surgical masks and even shoes wrappers. Hands are to be washed and sanitized after stepping in to the disinfecting rooms where every speck of dust will be blown off.

THE MAKING OF MOONCAKES

Now, this is a very amazing process. The assembly lines alone are jaw-dropping enough, and we never knew there could be so many people behind the making. There is the first group of workers who will scoop the fresh lotus paste for piping, and the second who will handle the machines that cut the mooncake into two to put the egg yolks in.

Another group of workers are in-charge of the various molds that will shape the mooncakes, and this is one complicated step as the differentiation process is no mean feat. There are so many variations – no yolk, single yolk, double yolk, white lotus paste, lotus paste… and the list goes on.

The baking process is another major set-up with multiple assembly lines. The batches of mooncakes are sent to bake multiple times. The first will be a 5-minute process to hold the shape of the mooncakes, and another group of workers will be at the end of the assembly line to dust the mooncakes with egg yolk before sending them to the second assembly line to bake for another 25 minutes. The third group of workers will then receive the baked goodies, and send them to the cooling room, and the process of cooling down takes another 30-40 minutes.

WRAPPING THEM UP

Over at the packing room, the assembly lines involve more technology. The mooncakes are packed in plastic containers, then sealed individually. And every single packet is then subjected to another hygiene test – a specialized machine is created to detect metal and foreign objects that might have gone in to the mooncakes during the production process. Stained ones will be discarded on the spot, while the good ones that passed will be stamped with expiry dates.

The final step is to pack the mooncakes into their respective boxes, and the baked goodies are good to be dispatched for sale for all discerning consumers.

MAXIM’S MOONCAKES: AWARD-WINNING MOONCAKES

We did a tasting on the many kinds of Maxim’s mooncakes, and boy, were we spoiled silly with all the goodness! From traditional baked ones to snow-skin variations, the myriad of flavours is such a joy to behold and taste. It is little wonder Maxim’s mooncakes are so popular – with such strict quality control, they promise nothing but the most comforting tastes that every connoisseur will agree with.

If you are a fan of traditional mooncakes, there is your usual white lotus paste with different number of egg yolks. They are smooth with an even sweetness level that you will not get sick of, and the egg yolks are simply fragrant. For something different, go for the red bean paste mooncake, mixed nuts mooncake, or egg custard mooncake.

The more adventurous ones will love their range of Snowy mooncake series, which are available in a wide variety of flavours including fruit jams, chocolate, and crunchy pearls.

Maxim’s Mooncakes is available at all Maxim’s Cakes outlets in Hong Kong, as well as 80 countries worldwide, including Singapore. Their consistency and popularity over the decades have proven that their mooncakes can indeed stand the test of time; they never go out of trend no matter how many Mid-autumn festivals have passed. And we are indeed fond of them.

This feature is brought to you by Maxim’s Group, the leading F&B group with 70 brands, and 840 outlets in Hong Kong, China and Vietnam.

Every time we visit Hong Kong, the sheer number of new restaurants and cafes that have opened since our previous trip amazes us. There is always somewhere new to check out, and quite frankly, it is impossible to tick all of them off our checklist. We always end up weighing our options with various factors – price point, location and type of cuisine.

On a recent trip, we went on a food tour with Maxim’s Group (you can read our pick on the best restaurants here), and one of the places that really impressed us was M&C.Duck at Harbourcity shopping mall. It is one of the newest dining concepts by Maxim’s Group – one of the largest F&B groups, with 70 brands and 840 outlets in Hong Kong, Vietnam and China – which opened in December 2013 – and it is one that has fast rocketed to our list of favourite restaurants in Hong Kong.

Offering a modern twist to traditional Peking and Shanghainese cuisine, M&C.Duck is not quite what you would expect of a typical Hong Kong restaurant. The familiarity of a Chinese outlet is comforting yet reveals hints of sexiness; the list of dishes is what tugs your heartstrings yet surprises with the unexpected.

Well, we would go there especially for the very good Peking duck, but there is much more to love, and we say them with a passion. Here are 9 reasons to fall in love with M&C.Duck, and the next time you find yourself in Hong Kong, you know where to go to feed your souls.

PEKING DUCK

The highlight of the show is, without a doubt, the signature Peking Duck. While we love Peking Duck, we do not get many chances to eat it because most restaurants go by the whole duck – which is quite impossible for two persons to finish.

But this will not stop us from eating at M&C.Duck, because they have brilliant menu which serves a smaller duck (2.4 – 2.5kg, the norm is 3kg), plus the option of ordering half a duck! No more couple dining woes! The Peking Duck (HK$150 for half bird, HK$288 for whole bird) truly lived up to its name. We like that it is a lot leaner and every bite combines the sharp and crisp skin with tender and succulent meat. And best of all, you don’t need to dine in a big group to enjoy it – perfect for small families and couples.

SUPER CONVENIENT LOCATION IN HARBOURCITY

Whenever we are in Hong Kong, we always head to HarbourCity because it has all the shops you would ever need. M&C.Duck’s location in HarbourCity is easily accessible, and there is really no excuse for not going there. And if you are lucky, you get the booth seats that overlook the Harbour!

CREATIVE & MODERN DISHES

What makes M&C.Duck stand out from the usual Chinese restaurants is its take on Chinese dishes that speaks of nothing but creativity with a modern twist. Take for instance, the Sliced Duck with Osmanthus Pudding (HK$80 for 4 pieces). Who would have thought the jelly texture would be perfectly sandwiched between a slice of duck and potato chip? They are like mini sliders, but even better.

The Apple Salad with Bacon in Sesame Dressing is another item that you would not expect from a Chinese restaurant. It is a nice way to begin your meal and have your senses feel refreshed before spoiling your palate with the Peking Duck.

A SEXY AND VIBRANT ATMOSPHERE

Most Chinese restaurants are, in general, not the kind of place that you would bring your partner to for a hot date. But think again if it is M&C.Duck. And it is worth the consideration. The interior is immaculately furnished with a modern touch, and the atmosphere is one so sexy and vibrant that eating Peking Duck has never been more inviting.

Now you know a Chinese restaurant that is good for dates.

MIND-BLOWINGLY GOOD SLICED BEEF IN PUNGENT SAUCE

Yes, the name may sound unappealing and anything but mind-blowingly good, but trust us – this Sichuan boiled beef in spicy sauce is really so darn good. The tender beef slices are simmered and cooked in chili oil and spices, and there is a slight burning after-taste that warms your tummy up. Best enjoyed with plain fragrant rice!

CLASSIC DIM SUM

Of course, what is Hong Kong without dim sum? If you need your fix, M&C.Duck will take care of it too. Some of the dishes include Deep-Fried Glutinous Rice and Potato Cakes (HK$45), Steamed Xiaolongbao (HK$60), and Pork Dumplings in spicy sauce (HK$48).

INSPIRED FROM CUISINES IN ASIA

The chefs are given a free rein to exercise their creativity in the kitchen and offer a refreshing take on Chinese cuisine. Some of the dishes are inspired and influenced by cuisines from all over Asia.

For one, the creation of Sautéed Prawns in Pepper & Soya Sauce was inspired by Singapore’s very own black pepper crab. We absolutely loved it!

STUFFED PURPLE RICE IN APPLE WITH OSMANTHUS SYRUP

End your meal with the very pretty Stuffed Purple Rice in Apple with Osmanthus Syrup. This is as pretty as it is tasty, and certainly a lovely change from the usual Chinese desserts like your puddings and sagos.

REASONABLE PRICES THAT WON’T BURN A HOLE IN YOUR POCKET

Above all, the food at M&C.Duck is reasonably priced for the quality. Most of the dishes are priced between HK$80 – HK$150, and the Barbecued Peking Duck is only HKS$150 for half a duck. Feasting can be affordable, too!

Hong Kong is such a paradise for food lovers, and is always among the first in Asia to launch trends from across the globe. Whatever you are feeling – casual fast meals to fine dining – Hong Kong always has something to offer.

And to embrace this love for food, Maxim’s Group www.maxims.com.hk celebrates the Tastes of Life and we joined them on a journey to discovering the bests of what this F&B giant has to offer. Visitors to Hong Kong would be all too familiar with this household name, but do you know that they have an impressive of 70 brands under their belt, with 840 outlets all over Hong Kong, China and Vietnam?

Think about Cantonese cuisine and you’d think of Maxim’s; think about cakes and breads and you’d think of the familiar red signboard in every single MTR stations. Maxim’s always promises an epicurean journey to titillate every sense, and it is by no surprise that they are the top-of-mind brand when it comes to F&B in Hong Kong.

Earlier this month, we had the privilege to feast at some of the best house brands by Maxim’s, and we are already looking forward to our next trip to Hong Kong for more good food. The next time you take a holiday to the Pearl of The Orient, read this guide to Maxim’s Group restaurants like it is your bible and visit the bests of Maxim’s.

DONDONYA HONTEN

DONDONYA Honten has several branches in Hong Kong, and connoisseurs would be happy to know that a meal at its flagship store at Elements is highly recommended for they serve really premium Japanese cuisine in a really cosy space.

The Premium Wagyu Tobanyaki Gozen (HK$358) features Japanese wagyu beef with excellent marbling, and beef lovers must not miss this for the world. Another one that we enjoyed was the DONDONYA Gozen (HK$388) that comes complete with king crab legs and so much food that no one does not go into a food coma after. Our favourite, however, is the Premium Fisherman’s Rice Bowl (HK$268). It is among the best chirashi-don that we have had, and we made a pact to revisit DONDONYA on our next trip – especially for the chirashi-don.

HONG KONG DAY

Counting sheep is easier than counting the number of cha chaan teng (Hong Kong local cafes) there are in Hong Kong. But let’s just say we have our favourites and Hong Kong Day is a recent addition to our list. We never knew, but we were happy to find out that Maxim’s Hong Kong Day has many outlets all over the city. Dishing out comforting casuals like soya sauce chicken and wanton noodles, this is one casual dining option when you need affordable and good eats.

Your wallet does not need to take a beating when you dine at Hong Kong Day. And oh, do not forget your Iced Yuan Yang, too!

MAXIM’S PALACE

If you had told us this was a palace with food fit for the royalty, we would really buy it. Maxim’s Palace is renown for its fine dimsum, and it is an even better experience when you have Hong Kong ladies pushing plates of dim sum around in old school pushcarts and you pick your favourites from the endless selection. The posh interior with high ceiling and crystal chandeliers and a view of the Harbour complete the impeccable experience.

And it is really quite unlike any other dimsum restaurants, because the 500-seater Maxim’s Palace has over a hundred varieties of dishes that are all prepared fresh from the kitchen daily. Its series of accolades is also a testament to their consistency in delivering only the finest Canton-style cooking. Wonderful theatrics and satisfying food; it can only be Maxim’s Palace.

Just a note that they do not take in reservations, so be prepared to queue. But we promise you it would be worth the wait.

M&C. DUCK

One of the newest dining concepts by Maxim’s Group is M&C. Duck, which offers a refreshing take to Chinese cuisine and at very reasonable price points. First, the brand is youthful and vibrant, with a modern European-style décor. Nothing too fancifully Chinese, but nothing too unpretentious too. We’d say this is a decent option when you need to treat your date to some good Chinese cuisine.

Second, it offers its signature Barbecued Peking Duck in two options – whole (HK$288) and half (HK$150) duck. Couples and small families usually have problems when it comes to Peking Duck because there would be food wastage for sure, but rejoice, for the half duck option is perfect for sharing even in small groups. Most of the dishes are given a modern twist to surprise your taste buds, and the chefs take pride in the presentation of every dish. We do not really think Chinese food could be sexy, but we take our words back now.

URBAN BAKERY WORKS

Sexy. Artsy. Fuss-free. Comfort. Altogether, URBAN Bakery Works presents itself as the it place for all-day casual dining. The concept shop at The Landmark is a stunner, and it promises nothing but a hip and fun experience.

The bakery focuses on croissants, with no less than seven different flavours – like almond, Belgian chocolate, cheddar cheese, and brulee – available every day. URBAN bakery Works’ latest creation, the Ball Law Cowssant, will blow your mind. It is a hybrid of croissant and po luo bao (pineapple bun), and complete with a slab of French butter, this is nothing but sheer indulgence. Warning: one might not be enough!

The cakes are worth a try, too. Check out the decadent options like What The Fudge and See You In Hell. Yes, the names summarise ‘em all. Go ahead and sin; we won’t tell.

SIMPLYLIFE

Among all the different dining concepts that we went to during this trip, simplylife is our favourite place. We fell in love with it, more than what we thought we would. The space is one that have you slow down, relax and breathe in the simple pleasures of life. simplylife, indeed.

With a bakery that produces an amazing range of bread, pastries and cakes, everything is of premium quality, and no additives are added.

For lunch and dinner, the kitchen dishes out fresh salads, pastas, burgers and other savoury main courses.

There are 8 branches in Hong Kong, but go to the biggest restaurant at Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong. We can go on and on about why we are in love with the concept, but the best way is for you to include it in your itinerary when you are in Hong Kong.

THE SQUARE

The crown jewel under Maxim’s Group, The Square has retained its One Michelin Star for six consecutive years, which is no mean feat given the competitiveness of the dining scene in Hong Kong. Its consistency and commitment to excellence are the key reasons for regulars’ loyalty, and the indulgent experience makes it the perfect choice when you need to throw a feast during a special occasion.

Standout dishes include the signature Steamed Lobster Dumpling, and the Golden Crispy Prawns with Strawberry Sauce, which was specially created for Gwyneth Paltrow when she was in Hong Kong in June 2014.

MAXIM’S CAKES

Last but most certainly not the least, this is the red signboard that monopolises all MTR stations, and is more often than not our answer to breakfasts and suppers. Maxim’s Cakes is a well-loved bakery that offers fresh selections daily, from buns to cakes to biscuits. And nothing is exorbitantly costly.

This mid-autumn festival, do not forget to pick up a box of traditional baked mooncakes for your family, too! They have some real deal at the mooncake plant that we were so very honoured to have visited and will share more soon, but for now, grab that Chinese delicacy and enjoy it over your favourite Chinese tea while soaking in some moonlight.
