Rainbow Cheese Toasties looks set to be the next trend to hit Singapore.

For those who have not heard of the Rainbow Cheese Toasties (also known as unicorn toasties), KALA Toast – a sandwich shop in Tsuen Wan, New Territories in Hong Kong - first created it and they have been appearing on everyone’s Instagram since. Many cities are also jumping on the bandwagon to serving their own versions of the unicorn toasties.

And now, you can get a rainbow cheese toast in Singapore too!

Epicurious Cafe at Robertson Quay has just introduced its own version of the Rainbow Cheese Toasties (S$9) today.

According to Epicurious Cafe, its Unicorn Toasties is coloured with REAL FOOD and just a tiny amount of food colouring. The toasties’ colours are achieved with red cabbage (violet), carrot (orange), spinach (green) and beetroot (pink).

It is mind-boggling to say the least, and to know that the colouring ain’t entirely chemicals sure made us feel more assured about putting that colourful thing in our mouths.

Epicurious is serving the Rainbow Cheese Toasties on its daily Blackboard Special in limited portions. Now if you want to have a go too, get there soon before the queue starts forming!

I am big fan of burgers. To me, nothing beats a good juicy burger. I have gone on a guest to find the best burgers in Singapore, and here are the results.

DB Bistro

The DB Burger ($42) lived up to its name. A juicy and superb burger with seared foie gras in the middle. This was heaven on a plate. Definitely one of the best burgers around. But with its price tag, it is not something that we can eat on a regular basis.

De Burg Burger

De Burg has pretty good burgers and most of them are priced reasonably. Their tag-line is “Burgers are not fast food”, and we wholeheartedly agree. Come here for a no-frills and well-prepared burger.

Epicurious Cafe

When I am having brunch at Epicurious Cafe – besides ordering the egg dishes – I also like to go for their Epicurious Burger ($18). And for the “full epicurious burger experience”, add cheese, bacon and egg ($4 for all 3 toppings).

Fatboy’s Burger Bar has many options on the menu, but what makes them special is that there is the option of building your own burger. Otherwise, just go for their signature Fatboy’s Bastard Burger.

Huber’s Butchery & Bistro has a very good burger ($15) with a solid beef patty topped with caramelised onions, melted cheese sandwiched between a softly-toasted and buttery bun.

There are many options on Roadhouse’s menu, but my favourite choice is the Bacon Marinated Burger ($23) – homemade bun, streaky bacons, caramelised onions, sauteed mushrooms, and 170g Josper-grilled wagyu patty. Utterly delicious.

With a price tag of $30, one would expect a lot from the Morton’s USDA Prime Burger. Does it really live up to expectations? We are happy to report that it is excellent. Juicy, tender, and flavourful, the prime burger from the bar at Morton’s Steakhouse sets a high benchmark for the other places in the market.

Omakase Burger

Omakase cheeseburger ($13.90) is made up of a delicious hand-ground beef patty with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato and sauce in a nicely toasted bun. The perfect burger? Almost. Omakase’s burger was indeed very good, but it was tiny and not exactly as satisfying. That said, I have had plenty of mediocre burgers with much higher price tags, so it is still probably one of the better burgers around.

The “To-die-for” Burger at OverEasy isn’t exactly to-die-for. But it is one of the few places (except 24 hours McDonald’s) that allows you to have your burger late at night, with a pint of beer no less.

Relish Restaurant

Relish by Wild Rocket is an upmarket burger restaurant in Singapore. Most of the burgers are priced between $14 – 18, which I have to say is excellent value for the quality. The Wild Rocket Burger - a medium-rare beef patty sandwiched between two toasted bun, with arugula, sarawak pepper cream and sun-dried tomato relish – is comfort food at its best, and something that you can eat on a regular basis.

Other burgers on the menu include: Blue Cheese & William Pear Beef Burger ($18.50), Chicken Satay Burger ($14.60), Bacon & Cheese Beef Burger ($16.40), and a Soft Shell Chilli Crab Burger ($15.60), which was surprisingly good.

The Riders Burger ($17) is very good. Nothing too fanciful, just a solid burger with nicely seasoned fries. Definitely one of the best burgers that you can get for under @$20.

For a good and satisfying beef burger, head to Smok’Inn Frogz Kitchen. And the best part is you do not have to break the bank for it.

Another burger that we like is the Suprette Burger ($24). It comes with a tasty beef patty topped with gruyere cheese in a nicely-toasted bun. There is the option of adding sides – such as bacon, mushroom, avocado, or foie gras – but the burger is so good on its own that you won’t need them.

&Made

&Made is a burger joint by the Delicia Group and Chef Bruno Menard, who previously helmed a 3-Michelin Star restaurant in Tokyo.

I have been to &Made several times, and while their burgers are made of good quality ingredients, they lack a certain ‘oomph’. In short, they are decent, but not life-changing.

That said, I still believe that &Made is worth a visit for two reasons. First, the location at Pacific Plaza is not only very convenient, but also relatively quiet – I can have a nice dinner without facing the crazy crowd in town. Second, the burgers, while not out-of-this-world good, are simple and comforting.

Sundays are so very nice. I get to sleep in late and nobody can point a finger at me. Oh what the heck, I can even have a burger for breakfast and you will not judge me for this.

How many times have I blog about the breakfast at Epicurious Cafe? How many different types of eggs have I ordered, and how often can I revisit Epicurious Cafe without seeming crazy? If it’s up to me (without consulting my wallet), I’d definitely come here for breakfast every weekend since Railmall is just five minutes away.

Contrary to what most people, it is OKAY to have burgers for breakfast. Why not? Since I had burgers at midnight before, I don’t see why I can’t have them for breakfast.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Epicurious burger ($18) serves one if your name is Brad, or two if you don’t have a big appetite. Add cheese, bacon and egg ($2 each, or $4 for all 3 toppings) for the “full epicurious burger experience”. This baby is humongous!

I started breakfast with Pancakes ($7 for 3) of course. A lot of syrup was consumed and I ate the three pancakes on my own. What an achievement! It may not seems like a lot to you, but pancakes mean the world to me. I’d marry any one who makes me pancakes for breakfast.

One of my favorite breakfast items on the Epicurious Cafe’s menu is the Baked Eggs with toast soldiers ($6.50 for 1). We ordered two portions and the first one that arrived was splendid. There’s something special about the combination of eggs and bacon in semi-molten form. Unfortunately, the second serving was rushed out of the oven way too early, and the baked eggs was too watery.

The Cafe offered to replace the Baked eggs with the Choco-nana sandwich ($6). Now, nutella is surely one of the best creations on earth. Spreading a thick layer of the wholesome nutella on white bread is the most sensible thing a person can do.

My middle name is nutella.

Look, I’m not saying Epicurious Cafe has the best brunch in Singapore. But for the kind of price and the comfort food they serve, Epicurious cafe is definitely still one of my favorite breakfast places in Singapore. I’m probably not going to blog about their breakfast again. So if you know what’s good for you, go to Epicurious cafe (or any brunch places) today for a good Sunday brunch.

Across the big colourful bridge, it is a path to company, fun, and good food on a Saturday afternoon. Thirty-eight of us, chat, laugh, and eat. There was a lucky draw, giving out some free desserts, tapas, pasta & burgers to the lucky few. And for the rest of you all, I’m glad you will not leave the place empty-hand, with the 1-for-1 vouchers.

The menu which I discussed with Helena, was to showcase the specialities of Epicurious. Simple, comfort food that you and I can do it at home if not for the fact that half of us are lazy creatures who preferred to eat than cook. Mushroom soup paired with croque Monsieur toast.

A lightly dressed Asian salad, paired with bacon-wrapped chicken. The latter was a brilliant creation. Taking one bite, I proclaimed it as the bacon Ngo hiang (prawn roll), just that instead of the beancurd skin that we are familiar with, they replaced it with the bacon, and the chicken in place of the prawn.

Mini burger paired with spaghetti Vietnamese bolognaise. Instead of the full size Epicurious burger, we did a half-patty-bun so that it will not be too overwhelming given we are having a four course.

And for the non-beef eaters, we specially did this pork patty for them. Oh-oh-oh-oh! The famous Epicurious burger! I’m trying to persuade Helena to have this pork burger on their menu as well! All right, the next time I go back, I’m gonna have my special order for this.

Hello everybody! Can you see the sparking vanilla bean that shines from the surface of the cold, creamy white? Vanilla-bean ice cream! Oh my, the sight of it never failed to excite me! The apple crumble at Epicurious was done on-the-spot, and the combination of chill ice-cream and warm crumble is surely a hit! My dear friend commented it’ll be better if there’s cinnamon added as well.

And the pairing of the apple crumble was the simple french toast, given a make-over by the folks at Epicurious.

* * *

I’m glad all of you came for my food outing, and I do hope it was an enjoyable one! This was my first time having a lucky draw for some fun, with Helena sportingly giving out several free vouchers for the lucky few, and everyone-else getting a 1-for-1 vouchers. Burgers, pastas, tapas and desserts. Whee!

I’ll like to thank Helena and her crew for hosting us at Epicurious, and see you all next time! I reckon there will be more impromptu small group food outing soon, but I probably just announced it through my Facebook page for those smaller outings, so do check it out!

Epicurious, located on the banks of Robertson Quay, has been in operations for close to 6 years now. The restaurant is the brainchild of the duo owners, Helena and Sharon. The concept for the restaurant is like a neighbour joint, serving casual food where you can chill out and enjoy a meal without any qualms.

The interior of Epicurious is surprisingly small, from the outside i thought it will be bigger. There are only three tables inside, with most of the seats in the al fresco area.

Unpretentious and comfy, Epicurious is really a place where i can sit down there all day with my friends

The al fresco area offers a view of the river by Robertson Quay, its simple furniture make it seems as though you are having picnic out in the natural.

The food which Epicurious offers are simple and comfort food, like sandwiches, salads, pasta. On weekends from 9am to 1pm, they have the brunch menu which include choices like pancakes, toast, bagel, eggs, ommelette. And i am really tempted by their brunch menu, you’ll be seeing them here in the near future.

At Epicurious, there is the blackboard specials, which is not on the normal menu, and these are changed regularly to allow customers to experience different type of food.

The lunch menu does not have much selection of mains, in fact they only have three to choose from, with mostly sandwiches and pasta otherwise.

For dinner, the menu is a different one all together, with starters like beef carpaccio, smoked salmon tartare, to main course like their signature epicurious burger, and there are also quite a variety of grills to choose from. Price ranges from 10s to 20s.

Turkey Breast Sandwich ($9.50)

Turkey Breast with roasted bell pepper and havarti cheese. The sandwiches are all freshly made with lettuce, tomato, and cucumber, with choices of country-style white or wholemeal sunflower bread.

The turkey breast sandwich is fairly good, served with keropok.

Spaghetti vietnamese chicken bolognaise ($14)

The chicken bolognaise spaghetti is served with cheese flakes, your good old reliable fix of pasta.

Asian Sloppy Joe ($12)

Pork and beef mince with hoisin and lime. The Asian Sloppy Joe is under the blackboard special for sandwich. The unique name caught our attention, and the sandwich does not disappoint.

The pork and beef mince combination creates a rather distinctive taste, slightly sweet and spicy.

Epicurious Burger ($18)

House-made beef patty with sautéed onions, mushrooms and fries. The Epicurious Burger is the signature dish of the restaurant, having heard many good things about the burger, it is inevitable that this is a must-try dish when you visit epicurious.

Although i just had burger at Seah Street Deli the previous day, but i have no qualms tasting the epicurious burger. And indeed, the Epicurious Burger is the star of the show, the beef done medium-rare, is tender and retains the juiciness of the meat.

And you can choose to add cheese, bacon or a fried egg for $2 each, or $4 for all three. But i choose to serve my burger the original way without any toppings.

I like the fries too, which comes with cheese flakes, the overall taste is buttery and cheesy!

Apple crumble with vanilla ice cream ($7)

The Apple crumble with vanilla ice cream is recommended to us by Helena the owner of Epicurious. Now who can finish a meal without having desserts? Definitely not me! The apple crumble is sour-sweet, and the taste of it together with ice cream does it for us.

Bread and butter pudding with custard ($8)

The bread and butter pudding is also another of their more popular desserts, the way to eat it is by dipping the pudding into the custard, but i preferred to taste the bread and butter pudding on its own.

Carrot Cake ($5)

A slice of the Carrot cake is enough for anyone to end their meal on a high, and the cake certainly taste good here. With a layer of cheese on top of the carrot cake, the effect is a melt-in-your-month. The cheese is relatively light and does not overwhelms the carrot cake.

Total bill is $82.48 for 4 mains and 3 desserts. However, Helena kindly has the desserts on the house, so the total bill is $64.90 instead.

The owner Helena is friendly and warm, we had a chat and she explain the concept of Epicurious to us. So if you saw her at the restaurant, do not hesitate to have a chat with her!

The current location however is a tad too small, and cannot serve more customer. But then again this can be a double edge sword, more seats serves more customers, but in the process you might just lose the wonderful ambiance of the place.

And by the way, Helena and Sharon have recently opened another fusion western-local restaurant, Persimmion which is located at the Link Hotel. Do give them a try if you pass by Tiong Bahru area.

Epicurious is one place which i’ll gladly return again to try out their brunch and dinner menu. The reason is simple, Epicurious serves casual food, the price will not hurt your wallet, and the ambiance of the place is relaxing. Despite my usual practice of not repeating visits to a same restaurant, i’ll bend the rule this time, for Epicurious!
