Tempura Tendon Tenya Singapore is opening its second outlet at ION Orchard.

The largest tempura restaurant chain in Japan, Tempura Tendon Tenya first opened in Singapore at Orchard Central in Oct 2020. The new outlet will be at ION Orchard food hall, at Basement 4 next to Toss & Turn.

The popular tendon chain is known for its affordable tempura bowls and prices range from S$7.90 to S$12.90.

We were in disbelief when we first had the Tenya Tendon in Japan many years ago. It might not be the best tempura, but it was very decent, and surely a steal for the price.

First-timers have to try their signature Tenya Tendon which is priced at only S$8.50 for a hearty bowl of tempura tiger prawn, red fish, squid, pumpkin, and French beans.

With the opening of Tempura Tendon Tenya, shoppers at ION Orchard will now have another option for cheap and good tendon.

Eating out can be all fun and games but there are just those days when our legs just don’t feel like cooperating. All we want to do is just sprawl across our bed and cosy up with our favourite Netflix show.

On those rainy days when you just want to snuggle up on the couch and get cosy with a hot bowl of soup, you can’t go wrong with bak kut teh. This comforting dish hits all the right spots with its rich herbal broth and fall-off-the-bone pork ribs.

Plus, delivering this dish to your house allows the ribs to stew a little longer, enriching the broth and tenderising the meat just a tad more.

If you’re craving this heartwarming dish, Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh has got your back.
#3 FRIED CHICKEN

Crispy, golden and greasy — fried chicken is quite simply, magical. Taking a bite into a crackling, juicy drumstick after a long tiring day is the culinary equivalent of taking a shower on a sweltering afternoon. The best part about having fried chicken at home? You can eat as messily as you want without worrying about looking like a caveman in public.

For a satisfying fried chicken indulgence, look no further than Chir Chir. This chain restaurant does some seriously good Korean fried chicken, with quirky flavours such as mala and cream onion.

#4 GALBI-JJIM

If you’ve never had galbi-jjim before, you’re missing out. This Korean dish sees fall-off-the-bone beef short ribs braised in a rich, savoury sauce. Pairing perfectly with a bowl of steamed rice, this homely dish makes for a wholesome, fuss-free dinner.

And don’t worry, having this as a takeaway will only enhance its flavour as the meat sits longer in the delicious gravy. You can get this Korean classic from Masizzim or Hanok by Masizzim.

Both concepts are centred around delicious, authentic Korean cuisine — think bubbling cauldrons of rich stews and charred, crisp pancakes.

Arguably the most anticipated franchise opening in 2019, Shake Shack of American fame has finally arrived in Singapore! Known for serving up excellent no-frills burgers and fries, Singaporeans have continued to flock to the branch even months after its initial launch, craving a taste of the American (food) dream at the convenience of their doorstep.

Visitors must definitely try the franchise’s winning combo of ShackBurger (S$9.20++) and Crinkle Cut Fries (S$4.50). With its signature chunky and perfectly grilled beef patty, and the crisp thickness of fries under a generous blanket of cheese, Shake Shack has won the hearts of many across the world, and to no surprise, now the loyalty of many Singaporeans too.

With 5 different Japanese food concepts under one roof, Tsukiji Fish Market is quite a paradise for Japanese food lovers. They offer a wide range of Japanese cuisine at fairly affordable price points.

From hearty ramen to fresh sashimi air-flown directly from Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market twice a week, this is one Japanese restaurant in the heart of Orchard Road to love if you don’t already know.

You’d be glad to hear that Tsukiji Fish Market is set to enthral with brand new additions to their vast variety of Japanese fare that they have to offer. From 9th July 2018 until 31st August 2018, you can quote ‘ladyironchef‘ to enjoy 20% off the total bill on the à la carte menu*.

Here is what you can expect on your next visit to Tsukiji Fish Market, in accordance to the concepts that they offer.

TSUKIJI FISH MARKET RESTAURANT

Sashimi lovers will rejoice at the multitudinous options that Tsukiji Fish Market Restaurant has to offer for fresh seafood. They are one of the concepts available at Tsukiji Fish Market.

The Bara Chirashi Don (S$21.80) is the ultimate go-to if you want a sashimi-centric meal and it is one value-for-money dish at that—topped with generous portions of diced salmon, tuna, swordfish, crab, salmon roe and tamago. And there is also tobiko and a small portion of uni!

Have a hankering for sashimi? Go for the 7 Kinds of Sashimi on a Ship (S$41.80) which is gloriously presented with fresh cuts of sashimi in accordance to the season. Otherwise, the fresh Oysters is a great option for sharing too—creamy and easy on the salinity, these are oysters we would find ourselves returning for.

EBIZO TEMPURA RESTAURANT

The Ebizo Tendon (S$22.80) from the Ebizo Tempura Restaurant is one hearty bowl that will definitely fill you up. The golden-brown batter which coated the tempura impressed us with its crispiness despite being doused in a sweet soy dressing.

Generously topped with fresh ebi, sea eel, snow crab leg, squid, a tempura egg, and assorted vegetables, this bowl of goodness is sure to leave you satisfied especially if you are a sucker for such deep-fried goodness.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Sushi Jiro’s Una Don (S$48++, U.P. S$58++) does not disappoint and we particularly liked the way that Chef Kenji prepares his rendition of the traditional Edo-period dish. He coats it with just enough tare to give the unagi a glorious sheen as well as a sweet and savoury finish but not overdoing it such that it totally drowns out the taste of the freshwater eel.

The shredded egg crepe that forms the bed is a nice touch as well. Providing a nice eggy flavour, it—along with the Japanese pickles on the side—really takes the edge off savoury, slightly fishy eel.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

WAGYU DON

If like us, you’re a sucker for premium quality beef or more specifically wagyu beef, then their Wagyu Don (S$50++, U.P. S$68++) is definitely something to go for.

Otherwise known as ‘gyudon’ at many Japanese establishments, this stellar beef rice bowl boasts a generous serving of thickly cut, buttery wagyu that brims with intense beefy flavour. The real showstopper here is undoubtedly the beef but more so, the rendered beef fat that just finds its way in and around the bowl, coating the individual rice grains as it goes along.

The onsen egg provides a secondary layer of richness which, when eaten together with the wagyu and rice, creates one heck of luxurious flavour explosion.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

TENDON

New to their donburi lineup is the Tendon (S$20++). Featuring a variety of ingredients deep-fried to golden perfection, each individual component boasts a crispy exterior and a soft, tender interior.

The ebi (prawn), in particular, was a standout. Lightly battered, the ebi tempura was neither too overly doughy nor oily. The crunch was delightful and coupled with the naturally sweet prawn and the savoury-sweet sauce drizzled over top, made for a totally enjoyable experience.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

To be honest, the tendon here is forgettable, but considering that it is just a fraction of the price of those at other places, we would say that this is still a pretty decent option.

The Japanese Curry menu begins with you choosing whether you would like to have it with rice (S$2.80) or udon (S$3.80) and after which you can proceed to pick and choose your ingredients. We went with the usual pork cutlet (S$2.80), potato salad in bacon wrap (S$1.80) and for good measure, a fried egg (S$1.80).

Otoko’s recommendation is to pick three toppings with a base. But if you pick just one topping (S$1.80), the Japanese curry rice can be as cheap as only S$4.60.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Taste-wise we were really impressed. The luscious curry was sweet and savoury with a subtle hint of spice. The pork cutlet was outrageously crispy and slathered with the delicious curry, made it such a joy to eat. The potato salad in bacon wrap had a smooth, velvety, mashed potato-like texture and the bacon gave it a more robust and smoky quality.

It is tucked at a corner on the second level of Cuppage Plaza and you wouldn’t otherwise walk past it unless you were particularly looking out for it. The nondescript outlet has been around for three decades. We actually only discovered it about seven years ago but it has since remained as a favourite of ours whenever we want a simple, affordable Japanese meal in Orchard Road.

Izakaya Nijumaru is one hidden gem (literally) in Cuppage Plaza.

But if you find it, we say you walk right in and treat yourselves to a good Japanese meal. You’d be pleased to know that the prices are very reasonable and the menu is comprehensive.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Then, there is a huge menu with many Japanese favourites that will spoil you silly. Set lunches start as low as S$9 for an Omelette Egg Rice to S$25 for an Unagi Bento Box complete with sashimi and miso soup.

For the in-betweens, go for the Buta Shioyaki Set (S$13), Deep Fried Pork Fillet (S$13) or Tendon (S$13). We are crazy about tempura bowls and the Tendon here didn’t disappoint. An assortment of prawns and vegetables served atop Japanese rice, this hearty bowl is something we’d return to Izakaya Nijumaru for.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

There is a concise sashimi moriawase selection, a series of simmered dishes such as Chawan Mushi (S$5.50) and Oden (S$9), and a whole page of grilled items (think xxx and xxx).

Japanese food wouldn’t be complete without a good beer or whisky and over at Izakaya Nijumaru, the beverage list is pretty well-curated in their own rights, too.

Tendon (short for tempura donburi) is gaining immense popularity in the Japanese food scene here in Singapore. In the past, tendon may not be the first thought whenever one thinks of Japanese cuisine—it is often overshadowed by ramen, the eye-pleasing chirashi don, or fresh nigiri sushi—but things are indeed picking up for this humble dish.

A good way to describe tendon is that it is basically a bowl of glistening Japanese rice topped with deep fried tempura and drizzled with a light soy-based dressing. It is the epitome of Japanese comfort food because who can ask for better than deep fried goodness and tasty rice?

If you are looking for places in Singapore to satisfy your tendon obsession, then this guide will surely be beneficial to you. Here is our guide to the 8 Best Tendon Restaurants in Singapore for you to get your tendon fix.

SHITAMACHI TENDON AKIMITSU

Award-winning tempura and tendon restaurant from Asakusa, Tokyo—Shitamatchi Tendon Akimitsu has opened in Singapore with its first outlet at Plaza Singapura. Portion sizes are aplenty and the price is kept affordable. Considering it is an award-winning establishment, being able to savour fresh and perfectly deep fried tendon without having to splurge much is quite a treat.

For prawn lovers, the Ebi Tendon (S$17.90) is a delicious option to have. Comprising solely of prawn tempura, the Ebi Tendon also comes with chawanmushi and miso soup on the side.

At Shitamatchi Tendon Akimitsu diners can expect nothing but authentic and spectacular Japanese cuisine.

Widely recognised as one of the best tendon eateries in Singapore, Tendon Kohaku is a popular tendon speciality restaurant found at Eat at Seven at Suntec City.

What sets their popular tendon apart from other tendons in Singapore is how exceptionally tasty each individual ingredient is. Unlike many other tendon restaurants that tend to channel more attention into achieving the perfect batter and a crispy tempura, they emphasise more on achieving full-on flavour.

The KOHAKU Tendon (S$15) is a good option if you want to savour many varieties, it comprises vegetables, chicken, prawn and other seafood atop a bed of fluffy rice, with a helping of sauce drizzled all over the tendon. The ingredients were so juicy, tender and well-seasoned and the tempura batter, albeit not as crispy as some others, was delicious and flavourful.

Tendon Ginza Itsuki is probably the one who started the tendon trend in Singapore. The small restaurant in Tanjong Pagar is one name that you would resonate with perpetual queues. And what is it they serve that got Singaporeans so obsessed?

A good old Tendon, of course! And you do not have a lot of choices here at Tendon Ginza Itsuki—it is either Special TENDON (S$13.90) or Vegetable TENDON (S$12.90). The former is a classic bowl with 2 pieces of prawns, 2 pieces of chicken, half-boiled egg and 4 pieces of vegetables; the latter is an all-veggie bowl but we’d say just skip that.

Every TENDON comes with steamed egg and miso soup and complimentary pickles.

An award-winning tempura and tendon restaurant from Asakusa, Tokyo—Shitamatchi Tendon Akimitsu has opened in Singapore with its first outlet at Plaza Singapura.

With more than 128 years of culinary experience, Shitamatchi Tendon Akitmisu promises to impress all diners with authentic tempura and tendon. Furthermore, Chef Tanihara Akimitsu, the founder of Akitmitsu and 5th-generation head chef of Dote No Iseya, had flown over to Singapore to personally provide training to the crew at its Plaza Singapura outlet. Now, that is some dedication.

Excited to have a taste of their famous recipe, we made our way down to their Plaza Singapura outlet on their grand opening day. We’d go out on a limb and say that this is one of the best places to have tendon in Singapore.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="width: 336px;height: 280px"></ins>//

Of course, we had to begin our meal with Akimitsu’s Signature Tendon (S$14.90) which features tempura-battered prawn, white fish, egg, seaweed, assorted vegetables and rice covered with their original Tendon sauce. In addition, it comes with a portion of chawanmushi and miso soup on the side.

Diners can choose either the Asakusa Original Sauce—recommended by the eatery—or the Spicy Sauce to go with their tendon. And did we mention that your meal comes with free-flow pickles too?

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="width: 336px;height: 280px"></ins>//

At first glance, the portion of ingredients served with Akimitsu’s Signature Tendon deserved much praise. Generous, fresh and perfectly deep fried ingredients; what more could we ask for in a tendon? Even more so at S$14.90, an award-winning, premium quality tendon at an affordable price was quite a treat.

Love your protein? The Ebi Tendon (S$17.90) would be a good and delicious option to have. Comprising solely of prawn tempura, the Ebi Tendon also came with chawanmushi and miso soup on the side. Just as crispy, just as tasty, this dish will be worth throwing your diet away for.

Other tendon you can try at Shitamachi Tendon Akimitsu include the Kakiage Tendon (S$15.90) and Vegetable Tendon (S$12.90). If not, shake things up a little with the Mixed Tempura Rice Set (S$16.90) and the Kakiage Tencha (S$17.90).

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="width: 336px;height: 280px"></ins>//

At Shitamachi Tendon Akimitsu, diners can expect nothing but authentic and spectacular Japanese cuisine. However, do note that Shitamatchi Tendon Akimitsu will get rather crowded during dinner time, so it is advised that you visit early to secure a spot at this quaint Japanese restaurant.

Widely recognised as one of the best tendon eateries in Singapore, Tendon Kohaku is a popular tendon speciality restaurant found at Eat at Seven at Suntec City. It is also situated right beside Katsudon Hanakatsu, a Katsu Don specialist by the same team at Tendon Kohaku.

The last time we visited Eat at Seven, we recalled seeing snaking queues outside Tendon Kohaku and we were curious to discover what was all the rage about this tendon specialist. Although we visited early, we were still greeted by a no less lengthy queue. But trust us, Tendon Kohaku’s KOHAKU Tendon (S$15) will make your efforts worthwhile.

At Tendon Kohaku, ordering is relatively straightforward as the menu only features 4 types of tendon and its corresponding set meals. Like Katsudon Hanakatsu, patrons will have a choice of Nanatsuboshi Hokkaido rice or 16 multi-grains rice mixed with Nanatsuboshi Hokkaido Rice for their tendon at no extra charge.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

We kept things simple and ordered the KOHAKU Tendon (S$15) with Nanatsuboshi Hokkaido rice. The KOHAKU Tendon comprises of vegetables, chicken, prawn and other seafood atop a bed of fluffy rice, with a helping of sauce drizzled all over the tendon. At first glance, we already found ourselves impressed by the sheer generosity of ingredients served.

But what sets the KOHAKU Tendon apart from other tendon in Singapore is how exceptionally tasty the ingredients are. As most tendon we’ve tried seemed to channel most of their focus on perfecting their tempura batter, it was often the case there was nothing special about the taste of their ingredients.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Here at Tendon Kohaku, you get everything you queued for and more. The chicken meat and other ingredients were so juicy, tender and well-seasoned and the tempura batter, albeit not as crispy as some others, was delicious and flavourful.

As seating at Tendon Kohaku is rather limited, we were not surprised that there were such long queues outside this eatery. But for those who wish to avoid the lunch crowd, a good time to visit would be 3pm.

Otherwise, you can consider visiting its 2nd branch at 64 Circular Road near Boat Quay, to satisfy your tendon cravings.

Brought to you by the graduates of the Tokyo Sushi Academy, Tempura Tsukiji Tenka is a tendon speciality eatery nestled within Japan Food Town in Wisma Atria.

With most dishes on the menu priced below S$20, Tempura Tsukiji Tenka is a good option when you are looking for a dining spot in Orchard Road.

The TENKA Tendon is affordably priced at S$13.80++ and it comes with deep-fried tempura battered lotus, prawn, mushroom, salmon and kakiage over a generous portion of rice. It comes with miso soup on the side too.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Before tucking in, we admit that we had high expectations with regard to the freshness and taste of the ingredients as Japan Food Town sources over 50% of their ingredients from Okinawa Prefecture primarily on a daily basis. And we are glad to say that the Tenka Tendon did not disappoint.

The tempura batter of the TENKA Tendon was light and crispy with a slight tinge of salt. The sauce layered over the tendon was similarly not heavy in flavour, which accentuated the freshness of the ingredients used. Our only gripe is that there was not enough sauce drizzled over the tendon as this would make the dish tastier.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Do be warned that the level of spice is not for everyone; those who prefer something not too extreme should get the original flavour and add in the amount of chilli they are comfortable with.

Visitors get to choose between Nanatsuboshi Hokkaido rice (16 multi-grains) or Nanatsuboshi Hokkaido rice for their katsudon at no extra charge. Top up an extra S$1.50 for Tonjiru (S$1.50++), which is miso soup with pork chunks and vegetables.

If you are thinking of hanging out with some drinks, Katsudon Hanakatsu also offers a small selection of alcoholic beverages as well.

Fans of tempura rice bowls should check out Kogane Yama—the newest tendon restaurant in Singapore.

Started by the folks behind Chir Chir, Kogane Yama at Bugis Junction officially opens its doors to the public on 04 June 2017. This tempura speciality restaurant offers customisable tendon—choose your tendon toppings, base and the spiciness level.

Always wanted the chance to customise your own tendon? Kogane Yama allows you to do just that as diners can decide what ingredients go into their tendon bowl.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

First, select your tendon bowl from a range of 4 flavours – Mixed Bowl (S$15.80), Chicken Bowl (S$13.80), Prawn Bowl (S$13.80) and Vegetable Bowl (S$11.80). Thereafter, choose to enjoy your tendon bowl with either rice, udon or soba. Depending on your personal preference, have your say with the spiciness level of the sauce which will be drizzled all over the tempura.

Diners also have the option to add chawanmushi (S$2) or miso soup (S$1.50) to their meal.

Our hearts led us to the Mixed Bowl Rice Set Meal (S$17.80) which came with chawanmushi and a choice of either miso soup or green tea. The Mixed Bowl comprises of a combination of fresh ingredients which includes chicken, prawns, sweet potato, carrots and more, layered with our choice of Spicy Level 1 sauce.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Considering the generous portion of ingredients served, the Mixed Bowl Rice Set Meal (S$17.80) was definitely a value-for-money meal. Furthermore, the tempura batter coating was crisp and light and ingredients equally flavourful.

The Prawn Bowl (S$13.80) with soba was another dish we tried. With the same tempura selection sans chicken, the tempura was likewise well-executed and tasty. We also liked that the soba was light in flavour which complemented the otherwise heavier tempura taste.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

Priced affordably at S$14.80, the Spicy Chilli Crab Tendon is served in a unique presentation of two delicate Japanese-inspired bowls. One of them serves as the backing for the generous portions of freshly fried tempura—which includes prawns, asparagus, pumpkin, salmon, kakiage and eggplant.

The tempura prawn was fried to perfection; the batter was flavourful and crispy, and the meat was soft and tender.

Unlike Singapore’s chilli crab sauce, Don Meijin’s chilli crab sauce was considerably spicier which gave the don a great kick of flavour. The sauce was also filled with plenty of snow crab meat and egg, with a slight hint of tomato sauce.

We only wished that there was more of this intense, tangy sauce to go with the large portion of rice served beneath the tempura.

Diners also have the option of ordering the Ochazuke Set (S$2)—a set with rice crisps, wasabi and dashi soup; or the Kansai Fu Mini Udon Set (S$3) to complete their dining experience.

With fantastic ambience, polite staff and efficient service, Don Meijin is great for those who are looking for a quick and delicious meal, and for parties who wish to enjoy their meal at their own time and pace.
