SPC Hanabi cover

Hanabi festivals (or fireworks festivals) are integral to Japanese summers. This long-standing tradition is held practically in Japan every weekend for a few months each year country-wide. In addition to the fireworks show, locals can enjoy a selection of Japanese snacks and drinks that many stalls known as Yatai offer.

It’s no wonder locals look forward to this breathtaking spectacle every year! Here in Singapore’s SingPost Centre, we have our own Hanabi Food Festival too; you’ll definitely be able to experience the summer vibes and Yatai food as if you were in Japan.

From 06 to 18 June 2019, experience the Hanabi Food Festival by Isetan at SingPost Centre Main Atrium Level 1 from 11 am to 9 pm daily. Here are some highlights to look out for. Itadakimasu!

Heap Seng Leong – Old-School Coffeeshop With Kopi Gu You & Kaya Toast

Heap Seng Leong Coffee Shop

Although kopi gu you is a dying tradition, Heap Seng Leong is one of the surviving coffee shops in Singapore that still sells this old-school drink. Entering their humble space is often described as walking into a museum showcase of a 1950s kopitiam. We settled in to the throwback of a place for breakfast with kaya toast, eggs, and kopi gu you.

Heap Seng Leong Kaya Toast

Everyone knows the iconic Singaporean kaya toast breakfast but have you tried it with a cup of traditional kopi that is served with a stick of butter in it? That, or steaming tea with condensed milk and a slab of yellow butter.

Kopi served with butter in it is called kopi gu you and literally translates to “coffee butter” in the Hokkien dialect. It is said to have been first found in Hainanese coffee shops in Singapore back in the 1930s. Today, instead of adding butter to coffee, coffee beans are usually first roasted in butter or margarine to achieve the same effect.

Burger Lobster Singapore

Hailing from London, Burger & Lobster has finally landed on our shores in Singapore at Jewel Changi Airport. What’s more, their restaurant is open until 3am daily so that late-night guests at Jewel Changi Airport can have a hearty supper!

Burger & Lobster’s beginnings on a London rooftop started in 2011 by a group of 4 schoolmates with only three items on their menu: whole lobster, lobster roll, and a beef burger—all of which were priced at £20 each. Their original intention was to open an eatery that impeccably dished up meals made up of only a few ingredients.

They have since increased the prices of the individual menu items, but their popularity has also risen internationally, having opened their doors in New York, Dubai, Bangkok, Kuwait City, and Genting Highlands.

Burger & Lobster Singapore’s signature lobster with fries and salad is priced at S$65 and there’s a Singapore-exclusive Sambal Glazed Lobster. The outpost in Singapore will officially open to the public on 23 May and the operational hours are from 9am to 3am daily. The Humble Scoop – Locally Inspired Ice Cream Parlour In Katong

The Humble Scoop

Let’s be real. With the kind of weather we have in Singapore, we can have ice cream every day.

A hidden gem among the countless maid agencies, massage parlours and tuition centres in Katong Shopping Centre lies The Humble Scoop, an ice cream parlour serving up in-house churned ice cream.

Tucked away in a quiet part of the basement, they pride themselves on locally inspired ice cream flavours. What really intrigued us were the names of the flavours on display. With names such as Orh Haw (hawthorn berry), Orh-Bee-Good (pulut hitam) and In-Kueh-Dible (salted coconut & gula melaka) that only us Singaporeans will understand, it definitely made us want to find out more.
