Rakuichi Japanese Restaurant’s Aburi Sushi

Rakuichi

Our usual go-to Japanese restaurant in the Novena neighbourhood is Tomi Sushi Bar, but when we were in the area last week, we wanted to try a new place for a change.

Located at the ground floor in the same building as Oasis Hotel, Rakuichi Japanese Restaurant has been around for a few years, and while we have noticed its branch in Dempsey Hill before, we never thought of trying it now until now.

Man, we’ve been missing out. Its much-lauded aburi sushi deserves a special mention. The Tokubetsu Set (S$28.60) – includes a salad, an assortment of 6-piece aburi sushi, stir-fried fish head with teriyaki sauce, seafood & vegetable tempura, miso soup, and sesame ice cream – is extremely value-for-money. There are also cheaper lunch sets like saba shioyaki, shake teriyaki and katsu don at S$18.60.

Seasonal Tastes’ Themed Night Buffet Dinners

Seasonal Tastes Dessert

Seasonal Tastes at The Westin Singapore has recently launched its themed night buffet dinners. Themed nights always mean more excitement and something special to look forward to, and with six different themes every night from Monday to Saturday, we just granted ourselves plenty more reasons to visit Seasonal Tastes again and again.

Mondays is Mama Mia Pasta Night. Go with a completely empty stomach, for you will be in for a treat – expect nothing short of a dream-like range of handmade pasta prepared with different sauces.

On Tuesdays, we pay homage to the Executive Chef’s roots with German Classics making a guest appearance. Crispy pork knuckles, farmer’s meatloaf, braised veal shank, bratwurst, kassler and sauerkraut… You get the idea. Go on and make your reservation!

We are big fans of Seasonal Tastes’ pastry chef, for she never fails with her divine creations, and the dessert buffet is always something that we look forward to the most. Wednesdays are ladies’ nights, with a dessert shrine – featuring sweets like profiteroles, mini cakes, cupcakes, macarons, and a berry pink chocolate fountain – that is specially set up with the ladies in mind. Go on, indulge in those sweets with your girls. We won’t tell.

Celebrate Thursdays with a Thai feast and enjoy favourite dishes like Thai green papaya salad, phad Thai with prawn and chicken, tom yum goong, and Chiang Rai-style steamed jumbo prawn.

Seafood buffet

Fridays are for T.G.I.F and for everyone to get together and catch up. What better way to welcome the weekend than to spend it with treasures of the sea? Seafood Nights at Seasonal Tastes come with the freshest selection of crustaceans like lobsters, crabs, prawns, mussels and freshly shucked oysters, and we trust you know that you should not miss this for the world.

Not forgetting the guys, Saturdays are your days to get your pals to pig out on carving and roasts. The chefs have prepared a fine selection of tender roasts – such as cold roast beef, crispy pork belly with cauliflower puree, slow-roasted beef prime ribs and BBQ beef short ribs – that will satisfy the carnivore in you.

Seasonal Tastes’ themed night buffet dinners at The Westin Singapore are priced at S$62++/pax for Monday to Thursday, and S$75++/pax on Friday. Diners enjoy complimentary per entry parking from 6pm onwards (Monday to Friday) and all-day (Saturday to Sunday).

The Tastemaker Store Singapore

Tastemaker Store

The Tastemaker Store is like a mix of new and old. Sitting within the old estate of Bukit Ho Swee, it is a clean space that is well-utilised and furnished with a very understated flare. Long lamps and potted plants hanging from the ceiling spell the character of the cafe, and light retro tracks fill the lovely space with a comforting touch of the 70s.

Hai Tien Lo Pan Pacific Singapore

Hai Tien Lo Pan Pacific

With so many new restaurants opening in Singapore every week, it takes a good restaurant to survive amidst the competitive market, and an even better one to continuously stay at the forefront of the industry. Hai Tien Lo at Pan Pacific Singapore is one of them.

A stalwart in the local dining scene, Hai Tien Lo sets high standards for quality Cantonese cuisine and remains one of the best Chinese restaurants in Singapore. It is the kind of place where you go for a smart yet casual luncheon with your business associates, to have dim sum with your friends during a gathering, or to celebrate your family member’s birthday.

Hai Tien Lo

Since joining Hai Tien Lo in 2004, Chef Lai Tong Ping has taken on the duty of lifting the restaurant to greater heights together with his team of chefs. It is no mean feat to straddle the line between sticking to classic Cantonese cooking and coming up with new and innovative creations to satisfy the ever-growing demands of diners.

To celebrate Chef Lai Tong Ping’s 10th anniversary at Hai Tien Lo, he has created ‘A Glorious Decade’ – an sophisticated six-course menu (S$108/pax, minimum of two guests) which showcases his signature hand-crafted creations, the dishes that best represent the cuisine and food philosophy at Hai Tien Lo.

Known to serve reasonably-priced steaks and mains in a casual ambience with friendly service, Outback Steakhouse never goes out of fashion, and we really love its menu; it is much more comprehensive than we thought, and even if you are not a fan of steaks, you will be spoilt for choice with its array of mains. They have a fantastic range of cocktails as well! Martinis and Ribeye; how wonderful life is.
