Originating from Kyoto, Kurasu is a popular cafe that serves specialty coffee from selected roasters around Japan and Matcha Latte. It is one destination you have to stop by for a morning pick-me-up.

Kurasu has recently opened Kurasu Orchard Stand at Orchard Building opposite Orchard Cineleisure and Mandarin Gallery. It aims to bring Japanese specialty coffee into the heart of the busiest shopping district in Singapore.

Kurasu Singapore offers the same lineup of coffee in their Kyoto branch with coffee being shipped fresh weekly in an express package.

Starting as a small online store selling homeware in 2013, Kurasu has since expanded their business to include both physical and online stores providing specialty coffee, tea, and Japanese brewing equipment that has been carefully roasted in their Nishijin Roastery.

Opened by the team behind The Brewing Ground in Joo Chiat, RIANG is a new casual dining concept along Jalan Riang, in the Serangoon neighbourhood which doles out brunch, larger mains, coffee and cocktails. It officially opens to the public today (2 Nov 2022).

RIANG is taking over the space by the former Babba (which is also by The Brewing Ground). This came as as a surprise as the now-defunct Peranankan cafe & restaurant only opened in late Feb this year, and it seems too soon to forgot a new concept like that.

Well, maybe the Peranankan concept didn’t work out and the owners have more exciting plans for RIANG.

From brunch classics, larger mains and all-day desserts, RIANG’s extensive menu has something for everyone.

Located within Djitsun Mall in Ang Mo Kio, Khao Hom by Rung Mama is a hidden gem opened by a Thai lady with the recipes from her mother, Rung Mama.

It will be opening a second outlet at Katong Square by end October 2022, taking over the former premise that is vacated by Goldleaf Restaurant.

Khao Hom by Rung Mama offers an array of authentic Thai dishes at reasonable prices and some of the popular options include Grilled Moo Ping, Thai-style Steamed Seabass with lime sauce, Tom Yum Seafood and Thai Papaya Salad.

The robust-tasting Crab Meat with yellow curry and Thai Noodles, also known as Ke Nom Jin Kaeng Pu, is super fiery, hot and spicy.

The Seafood & Crab in Thai Curry Powder (Talay Phad Phong Karee) is is less spicy but no less flavourful, and it goes super well with a iced cold Chang beer!

Khao Hom by Rung Mama’s new location at Katong Square is much bigger than their original outlet and the bigger kitchen will allow them to come up with new additions for the menu.

East-siders have another new Thai food option to dine at for solid Thai food!

Listed in the Michelin guide for the 2017 Bib Gourmand Awards, Ka Soh Restaurant is what you would expect from a typical Chinese restaurant which offers a wide selection of zi char dishes including a range of noodle dishes, fried rice, and plenty of side dishes.

Founded by Chef Raymond Tan—the Chef Owner of renown omakase restaurant, Hiryu—Shinsho Ramen is an affordable ramen joint which dishes out solid paitan-tonkotsu ramen as well as a selection of delicious sides such as gyoza, fried chicken skin, Japanese tacos and fried buns.

It has recently introduced four new Omurice dishes that you have to try!

The four new Omurice include:

Ebi & Ebiko S$19.80

Salmon ikura S$21.80

Unagi kabayaki S$29.80

Yakiniku A4 Wagyu S$38.80

Out of the four new Omurice, our favourite is definitely the A4 Wagyu Omurice. If you love Shinsho Ramen’s Kuroge Wagyu A4 (S$54) Ramen, you will enjoy the new Wagyu Omurice which comes with slices of Yakiniku A4 Wagyu.

The Ebi & Ebiko Omurice is a hearty dish of Japanese omelette with prawns and Ebiko.

The Salmon Ikura Omurice features pan-seared salmon with a homemade teriyaki sauce and we love that it comes with a generous topping of Ikura.

Other than the four new Omurice, Shinsho Ramen has also added three new appetisers to the menu:

Grilled Surume Ika S$24

Buta Bara Karaage S$9.90

Salmon carpaccio S$10.90

The squid is coated with a spicy miso marination and grilled to perfection.

Shinsho Ramen’s Buta Bara Karaage is super addictive and it goes really well with an ice cold beer.

And if it is your first time dining at Shinsho Ramen, you must order their signature Paitan ramen.

The broth is standardized and they are all Paitan-tonkotsu. Boiled for more than 24hrs with chicken carcasses and pork bones, look forward to a full-bodied milky white broth that is creamy, sweet and extremely satisfying.

The ramen menu consists of the regular options such as the Aged Soy Sauce (S$14.90), Spicy Red Miso (S$16.90), Homemade Black Garlic (S$15.90) and Special Black Truffle (S$17.90). All are very affordable and comes in a reasonable portion for one, with an assortment of toppings such as cha siu, bamboo shoots, grilled baby corn, spring onion and hanjuku egg.

Maison Kayser is Eric Kayser’s eponymous bakery chain from France with sweet and savoury bakes and it has been named by Paris’ Figaro newspaper to be the best.

Besides their famous croissants, they also serve a selection of classic French breads, viennoiseries, sandwiches, soups, and salads.

The new outlet is located at Stars of Kovan and it has taken over the former premise of Sugartree Gelato—an ice cream shop by the same team behind Two Bakers—which has moved to Daily Ground in Bukit Timah.

Look forward to Maison Kayser’s popular French-style eclairs, breads, tarts and a whole plethora of sweet treats.

There are a few seats in the small bakery cafe and you can enjoy a cup of coffee/tea with your bread and pastries.

The Mandala Group and Jekyll & Hyde have partnered together to reopen Operation Dagger, one of the World’s 50 Best Bars, in a new form.

They will be opening two concepts—graft and DAGGER at 76 Neil Road, just next to Jekyll & Hyde at 74 Neil Road.

The new brand is a collaboration between two powerhouses—The Mandala Group, which owns Mandala Club (previously known as Straits Clan) in Singapore as well as various restaurants, bars and resorts around the world; and Jekyll & Hyde, one of the most popular cocktail restaurant & bar concepts in Singapore which is known for its elevated Singapore soul food and whimsical cocktails.

In order to comply with URA requirements, food will be front and centre as graft’s main offering, while serving their signature drinks to complement the dishes.

Photos credit: Jekyll & Hyde & graft

A sustainability-first restaurant, graft is now open for booking, while DAGGER will only open early next year in 2022.

They have an edible garden in the courtyard, where all plants will be used in their food and drink. The restaurant will also be using glassware that is made all from used bottles, and cut and sanded down by hand.

The food is inspied from Chef Alvin’s—formerly head chef at Shanghai Dolly, and at Straits Clan—experience in both Western and Eastern kitchens and the drinks are made from Eco-Spirits.
