Popular Hong Kong congee stall, Mui Kee, has opened a pop-up restaurant in Singapore. In partnership with Les Amis Group, the Hong Kong institution will start a six month-long pop-up at Casa Verde in Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Mui Kee itself has a long and rich heritage, but what draws its customer fan base is the unique taste and texture of the congee itself. Using fish broth, pork bones and other ingredients like century egg, this congee takes comfort food to a whole new level. Those familiar with the name would know just how amazing their fish broth porridge is, and for those who are not, just imagine silky-smooth, velvety congee that brims with flavour.

This is comfort food like you have never had before, and if you ever needed a solid pick-me-up on a cold rainy day (or any day) then Mui Kee is definitely one to consider.

At Mui Kee’s pop-up, diners can choose from eight different types of congee that are popular among Mui Kee’s Hong Kong customers. They feature ingredients such as dace fish belly sautéed with rice wine, meatballs, pig’s innards and sliced beef.

The plain congee is perfect for a light yet satisfying meal—the fluffy, smooth texture is second to none. Meanwhile, the delicious fish stock adds a sweet and savoury aroma that makes the congee anything but plain.

The Cantonese-style porridge is available only in sets here, priced at S$12.50 and S$14.50.

Apart from congee as the main dish, each set comes with crispy dough fritters and sliced century eggs topped with preserved ginger. Diners can also select other side dishes such as drunken chicken (S$10) and blanched kai lan (S$7).

Mui Kee is slated to open its own proper restaurant at the end of the year, with a fuller range of congee choices. For now, you can head to Mui Kee’s pop-up restaurant at Casa Verde. Do note that the congee will be available only during breakfast and lunch.

Bee’s Knees at The Garage, nestled within Singapore Botanic Gardens, is a hideout away from the hustle and bustle of the city that allows you to dine within lush greenery, which makes it a perfect spot for weekend brunch.

The pet-friendly cafe serves a range of western dishes and specialises in pizza, pasta, sandwiches and desserts. Drivers should go by Cluny Park Road for direct access to Bee’s Knees.

Walk up a small pathway to a historical building which is home to two dining establishments—Bee’s Knees on the ground level and Botanico at the Garage right above.

Running a semi-self service concept, visitors have to make their orders at the counter and pick up the food at the collection point. No service charge is included in your bill.

You can choose to sit in the alfresco area during fine weather with your fur kids or head indoors to dine in an air-conditioned room.

We enjoyed the buttery Tiger Prawns (S$18+) pasta, which was full flavoured and came with plenty of juicy prawns and cherry tomatoes.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>//

Waffles at Bee’s Knees are extremely photogenic and we decided to go for the Caramelised Apples, Greek Yoghurt and Cranberries waffle. Those who prefer soft Belgium waffles as opposed to crispy ones will enjoy this.

Good for sharing, and you can expect a combination of sweet and sour tones from the fruits and greek yoghurt.

Words by Ms Skinnyfat, photos by ladyironchef.

Singaporeans are a disgruntled lot. We complain about everything under the sun, and about the sun as well! The weather is too hot and humid for anything outdoors and so we hide in the air conditioned comforts of shopping malls. Then we bemoan the lack of things to do. This never ends, does it? Why not bear the heat, explore the green spaces we have and marvel at the beauty of nature? You may even find some hidden surprises.

Casa Verde is one of those surprises. Very few dining establishments can boast of being at the doorsteps of nature. What’s more? It is located in the heart of the city, nestled in a quiet corner of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The vibe is relaxed, with pets roaming freely in the alfresco area and people chilling after a hike in the park.

Breakfast (served from 7.30am to 11am daily) is a casual semi self-serve affair where you place your orders at the counter and wait to be served. We took refuge in cosy indoor section to escape the sweltering heat while waiting.

I’m always fearful of eating carbonara because the cream sauce could be rather overwhelming if not done well. However, Casa Verde’s version (S$15) kept us going on till none was left. The cream, egg and Parmesan mix is drier as compared to most but it was just sufficient to coat each strand of spaghetti to give it a flavorful burst.

Breakfast is never complete with eggs. I can never say no to a gourmet breakfast with scrambled eggs (S$15) because it provides a great variety of ingredients. Even though the eggs weren’t sufficiently creamy or buttery, I love the juicy Cumberland sausage and flavorful back bacon. The portions were huge for the price we paid.

The slightly doughy Italian thin crust pizza was very decent as well. We had the pizza frutti di mare (S$23), which came with fresh chunks of scallop, squid and shrimp on a tomato salsa base. This is perfect picnic food. Grab a few friends, lay out the red and white checkered mat on the luxuriant green and enjoy a good conversation over wine and pizza. Life is too short to be stuck in overcrowded shopping malls.

Sunnies up folks! It’s time to stop and smell the roses.

Food For Thought Cafe is one of those places that immediately come to mind whenever someone asks me to recommend a place that serves decent food at affordable prices.

They have recently closed down their original branch at North Bridge Road, and shifted to a much bigger location at Singapore Botanic Gardens. Well, it is probably an understatement to say that it is much bigger. The new outlet can easily accommodate more than 200 people. This is definitely great news for regulars who always frequent the cafe.

Food For Thought (FFT) Cafe at Botanic Gardens is slightly different from both the North Bridge Road and 8Q SAM Queen Street outlets. They have a self-service system where you order and pay at the cashier, and the staff will serve the food to the table.

We were there for brunch recently, and while it was tempting to get extra portions, we decided to order sensibly because we were heading to Brunetti for desserts.

The menu has quite a fair selection of everything: from Salads ($10) like Chicken Caesar and Juicy Portobello; to Pastas ($12-17) like Lemon Butter Mushroom Linguine and Spicy Beef Linguine; to Grilled Burgers ($8-12) like the Classic Beef and Cheese Burger; to Mains ($20-23) like Baby Back Ribs and Pan-Seared Salmon; and desserts ($4-7) like Red Velvet Cake and Hazelnut & Chocolate Cake.

In addition to the ala carte menu, they also have a brunch menu and it’s easy to see why it is so popular. The brunch is just $8 for any three items and you can choose from items like Grilled Mushrooms, Hash Brown, Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, and Sausage.

The food that we had in general was decent, nothing to write home about. I enjoyed the Creamy Pulled Pork Linguine ($16), while the Grilled Basil Pesto Chicken Burger ($9) and Eggs with mushroom & sausages ($8 for any three items) were okay.

The highlight was definitely the Dark Chocolate & Raspberries Pancakes ($12). In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that they have one of the best pancakes in Singapore.

Some of the other pancakes on the menu (from $8-13) include: Mixed Berries, Banana & Walnut, Hazelnut Chocolate and Granola.

Food For Thought at Singapore Botanic Gardens is an ideal place for weekend brunch; you can take a nice stroll in the park after having scrambled eggs and sausages, with a cup of coffee. Moreover, most of the dishes are priced very reasonably. I am sure the new outlet will become very popular in no time.
