Established in 1965, Kelim Dakdoritang is a famous Korean spicy chicken hotpot chain with more than 50 outlets in South Korea and it has opened its first outlet in Singapore at Serangoon Gardens.

The speciality spicy chicken stew restaurant is brought in to Singapore by Lee Seongmin is the son of Kelim Dakdoritang’s founder.

Dakdoritang, or Korean spicy chicken stew, is a traditional Korean dish made by boiling chunks of chicken with potatoes, rice cakes vegetables, spices and gochujang. What makes Kelim Dakdoritang’s rendition different is the additional of a copious amount of chopped garlic and leek.

Kelim Dakdoritang serves their Korean spicy chicken stew in the form of a hotpot and you can choose to add on more toppings including rice cake, sausage, mushrooms, and quail eggs.

The Korean spicy chicken stew was actually not as spicy as it looked; it had the right amount of spice with a strong garlicky taste.

For carbs, you can choose from Kalguksu (Korean knife cut noodles), Udon, or Ramyeon.

End your meal with their Fried Rice (S$8), a typical Korean ‘dessert’. The staff will fry rice, seaweed, sesame oil, and kimchi with the remaining stew in the hotpot at your table.

This is definitely not the place to go on a first date. But if you love spicy Korean stews, check out Kelim Dakdoritang the next time you are in Serangoon Gardens.

Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionery is an institution which has been dishing out Singapore-style old-school breads—or better recognised as buns—for decades.

While everyone has their favourites (and there are only a handful of surviving traditional bakeries in Singapore), we grew up with Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionery at Serangoon Garden Market and it is our go-to place whenever we want to satisfy our craving for old-school buns.

“Zai Lai, Zai Lai!”

The daily fresh bakes from Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionery are a true testament to the standards of old-school local-style breads.

The stall occupies two units in the buzzing Serangoon Garden Food Centre & Market, and since young, we’ve watched the two uncles picking breads from the shelves and calculating the total sum in godlike speed.

Queues are often seen especially in the morning when trays after trays of freshly baked buns are put up, and during lunch hour. Very often, they sell out by 2pm.

Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionery has quite the selection of old-school buns. Pillowy soft with a brown skin and white interior, tears apart easily, and exudes a distinct fragrance that we grew up knowing.

The Butter Bun is probably the most famous one, while the Cheese Bun comes close in terms of popularity. The Hamburger is essentially chicken luncheon meat enveloped in soft bun, and the Kaya Peanut is our all-time favourite.

The aroma of the bakes often fill the market, and despite inflation and rising food costs, their prices remain low and the uncles are ever humble of their successes.

Here is our Serangoon Gardens Food Guide featuring restaurants, cafes, and eateries you have to visit when you are at Serangoon Gardens. P.S. We are working on a separate guide to the hawker stalls at Serangoon Garden and we will be sharing that soon.

P.S. Apollo Coffee Bar is a dog-friendly cafe; you can also bring your dogs and dine at the outdoor area.

When one mentions kao yu, the first place that instantly comes to most people’s minds is Chong Qing. They are popular for having a large variety of kao yu cooked in different ways, with some of their popular items being their Signature Charcoal-Grilled Fish Hot Pot as well as their Small Golden Snapper in Spicy Fragrant Broth.

Opened by Chef Tan-San—who was previously from Tonkichi and Tampopo—Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen is a casual eatery at myVillage which has authentic tonkatsu and ramen at relatively affordable prices.

Their ramen is decent by most standards, but the real star of the show is their tonkatsu. We love their Premium Pork Loin and at S$22.90, it is better and cheaper than most of the tonkatsu that we’ve had at other tonkatsu places in Singapore.

Helmed by Daniel Ong, Dan’s Steak is a relatively new Korean-influenced Steakhouse which opened at Serangoon Gardens in April 2021. It is a small and cosy space which can seat around 30 pax.

Dan’s Steaks is a steakhouse with a slight Korean twang and what makes it different from the other steakhouses in Singapore is that it offers free banchan (Korean side dishes) just like the usual Korean restaurants. Daniel Ong will be cooking and serving the steaks himself.

For those of you who follow Daniel on Instagram, Dan’s Steaks is actually not a new concept. It first started as a home-based business in May 2020 during the Circuit Breaker period.

Here are the dishes that you can look forward to at Dan’s Steaks

Grass-fed Steaks from S$28

Wagyu/USDA from S$58

Other mains from S$18

Large format steak cuts (1-1.4kg) from S$118

12 sides at S$8 including fries, garlic mash, kimchi and namul, male and nuts, cream spinach with a fried egg on top, Honey balsamic tomatoes

Cocktails, fresh fruit soju, vintage wines.

There will be around 20 different types of banchan that are made in-house—including kimchi, spicy tteokbokki (Korean rice cakes), and Daniel’s mum’s speciality, braised black beans—on a rotational basis.

Dan’s Steaks served only big format cuts (think 1kg tenderloin, 1.2kg bone-in ribeye, striploin) when they first started selling steaks online, but the new Dan’s Steaks at Serangoon Gardens will also have a range of 250g – 350g grass-fed steaks, wagyu steaks, USDA Prime steaks.

For people who don’t eat beef, there are other options such as miso salmon, and Korean chicken.

Do not miss out on the fantastic side dishes. The creamy and buttery Mashed Potatoes completely stole the show, while we also loved the Cream Spinach with Fried Egg.

The rise of healthy cafes in Singapore providing natural and organic eats has changed our perception towards healthy grub. While we love the occasional indulgence (who doesn’t?), we also enjoy guilt-free alternatives that allow us to stick to our fitness plans.

Taking over the former spot of One Man Coffee at myVillage in Serangoon Gardens, Staple Food aims to provide nutritious, yet gratifying meals that do not compromise on taste—using only fresh ingredients so from reliable suppliers. The cafe has a curated food menu but diners can customise their own bowl to suit their personal dietary needs.

If you fancy wholesome and well-sourced food, Staple Food is a great place to stop by for a quick lunch for those who work around the area.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#2 BUGIS FISH SOUP AND SEAFOOD SOUP

The ladies will love this. Fish soup is a lower calorie option, and this stall here knows how to please by being generous with the vegetables. If you like your soup sweet with a creamy taste, get the stall keeper to add milk to your order.

We prefer the sliced fish version because the fish slices are always very fresh.

#3 GARDEN STREET KWAY CHAP

Sitting at the corner is Garden Street Kway Chap, and queuing up is part of the experience as the stall owner takes his time to chop up the meats and intestines. No, really. He is super slow, but for great kway chap, we will gladly wait.

The spread is comprehensive, from the various intestines to pork belly to beancurd, and salted vegetables and eggs. The braise is aromatic and flavourful, but it is not complete without the chilli. We like drenching our intestines in the chilli sauce for a more robust flavour.

#4 POH POH ROASTED CHICKEN RICE

Everyone knows Pow Sing for being the chicken rice to eat when in Serangoon Garden. But Poh Poh Roasted Chicken Rice comes close with its fragrant roast chicken and addictive chilli sauce.

Their prices are also much more competitive, and we love to pile our plate up with cabbage and egg add-ons. Of course, chicken rice and Coke zero® go hand in hand; the refreshing taste of Coke zero® complements the familiar taste of chicken rice so well.

#5 SERANGOON GARDEN BAKERY & CONFECTIONERY

The daily fresh bakes from Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionery are a true testament to the standards of old-school local-style breads. The stall occupies two units in Serangoon Garden Market, and since young, we’ve watched the two uncles picking breads from the shelves and calculating the total sum in godlike speed.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

The aroma of the bakes often fill the market, and despite inflation and rising food costs, their prices remain low and the uncles are ever humble of their successes. It makes our day every time we take our pick from the many shelves, and there is something therapeutic about hearing the plastic lids close one after another every time the uncle reaches out to grab a bun with his thong.

#6 PANCAKE KING

You might dismiss this snack stall on the first look, but Pancake King did not accumulate their accolades without reasons. From old-school banana cake to brownies to peanut pancakes, these local snacks are reminiscent of our childhood days and the taste hasn’t changed since.

Growing up, a can of Coke® was always a reward when we behaved. And what better way to enjoy an old-school crunchy and rich peanut pancake than with a fizzy glass of ice-cold Coke®? It makes the experience of snacking even more pleasurable.

#7 SERANGOON GARDEN CARROT CAKE & WANTON NOODLE

There are several stalls in Serangoon Garden Market that sell fried carrot cake, but it is this stall that won our hearts with its consistency. The portion is always generous, and so is the sweet sauce. This is another of our hawker centre staple!

And the best drink once again to enjoy with your fried carrot cake? A can of Coke light®, with a fizzy, uplifting sensation that makes for a great complement with the greasy goodness.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: inline-block; width: 336px; height: 280px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1199323522078805" data-ad-slot="9464314347"></ins>

#8 SIANG HEE SEAFOOD

This is a zichar stall with irregular opening hours. They used to be at Zion Road market, but has located and gained a new following among the Serangoon Garden residents. Standout dishes include the Mee Goreng and Butter Cream Meat with Pumpkin Sauce.

But be warned that the stall operators are all very rude and impatient. Sometimes, they may even raise their voices at you. We are not too fond of patronising them because of their attitude, but if it is your first time, maybe you can brave the hostility and try the two dishes.

#9 SOON HUAT PIG’S ORGAN SOUP

If there is one favourite that residents would concertedly agree with, it is Soon Huat Pig’s Organ Soup. This stall sees a perpetual queue during lunch hours, and you have to join the line if you are a fan of pig’s organ soup.

We like how they are generous with the salted vegetables and tomatoes; they elevate the flavour of the soup, and cuts out any remaining odour from the intestines.

This article was brought to you in partnership with Coca-Cola®, the opinions are of the writers’ own.
